I don’t give a damn if Donald Trump lives or dies. I don’t wish him well. I don’t send him thoughts or prayers. If COVID-19 or green men from Mars or liopleurodon take him to his despicable maker, so be it. Everyone dies. Being famous and/or a billionaire and/or president of the United States does not entitle you to universal goodwill.

Neither do I wish Trump ill. That’s how little I care.

Republicans, members of the self-proclaimed Party of Personal Responsibility, ought to acknowledge that this man has been asking for this. I’m not talking about karmic retribution for the 200,000-plus Americans who died on his watch while he plainly didn’t much care. Trump has been cruising for COVID-19 spring, summer and fall, avoiding masks and social distancing the way he dodges the construction contractors he chisels out of pay. If you drink like a fish, you’re cruising for liver disease. If you like to run red lights, don’t whine if you get broadsided by a semitruck. Trump wanted this virus, and he got it.

What’s fascinating and enlightening, though, is the semiotic contortions that liberal Democrats twist themselves through in order to simultaneously dog whistle their glee at the president’s medical misfortune while patting themselves on the back for their phony compassion.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, the former progressive to whom I point whenever I’m trying to instance the term “sellout,” tweeted a watered-down liberal version of “thoughts and prayers” in response to the big news: “God bless the president and the first lady. If you pray, please pray for their speedy and complete recovery — and for everyone infected, everywhere.” Atheists, thank the Lord, are apparently off the hook.

Maddow continued sympathy shaming for Trump on her nightly TV show.

“If you know someone who smoked for years and years and years and never even tried to quit despite knowing the risks of lung cancer from smoking and then that person who you know got lung cancer, how do you react to that?” she asked. “Well, part of the way you react is that you understand why they likely got it. Your instinct might even be to blame them for getting it. Go right ahead. Enjoy that schadenfreude.” Internet searches for “schadenfreude” soared over the weekend.

“But also, you’re a human being in this situation,” Maddow went on. “If your friend has lung cancer now, regardless of what you feel about how he or she … got it, once you find out that they’re ill, you wish and hope and try to save them, right? You get them into treatment. You help them try to survive it. You move heaven and Earth to cure them. That’s how we do as humans, right? That’s how this works!”

Well, yes. The keyword is “friend.” If your friend screws up, you are there for them. But Trump is not my friend.

Trump made excuses for and let Saudi Arabia off the hook for butchering Jamal Khashoggi. Trump bombs innocent people with drones. Trump kills the poor in Yemen. Trump coddles neo-Nazis and cops, who are often the same people. Trump doesn’t care if I die due to lack of health care. Trump doesn’t care about all the homeless people sleeping outside tonight.

So, Trump is my enemy.

He’s probably yours, too.

And when your enemy suffers, you have no obligation whatsoever to care. You are allowed to laugh. Pretending that you care about your enemy, especially when they are a mass murderer — every American president is — is the pinnacle of psychological alienation. Make no mistake: Your enemy would do the same to you. That is, if he even knows you exist.

It’s interesting that Maddow used the F-word (“friends”). I don’t know if she is friends with President Trump the same way Ellen DeGeneres chills with former President George W. Bush, but there’s an important similarity: Both men and both women belong to a privileged class of ruling elites to whom rules and laws do not apply as stringently as for the rest of us. Maddow earns a reported $7 million a year and is worth $20 million. The rich are different from you and me: They don’t care about us.

From a class perspective, Trump and Maddow might not be friends. But they are part of the same clique. And if anything makes these insanely wealthy people nervous — aside from succumbing to a mysterious disease or getting strung up by an angry mob of revolutionaries — it’s their suspicion that we might not like them, that we might not consider them “friends,” that we might not give a damn about them and we might actually take pleasure in their suffering.

Forty percent of Democratic voters told a poll that they were happy Trump has COVID-19. I was surprised that anyone took such a poll and that any media organization published the results. That wouldn’t have happened 40 years ago.

There isn’t much historical data to compare to, but it’s a fair bet that most Democrats felt sympathy for Ronald Reagan when he was shot in an assassination attempt in 1981. I was a leftist, and I hated Reagan. His financial aid cuts forced me to work multiple jobs through college and pushed many of my classmates to drop out of school. But I was glad he recovered. At the time, an attack on the majesty of the presidency was shocking.

The presidency no longer has much majesty. I’m not sure that’s a bad thing.

ORDER IT NOW

The liberal Democrats who fall over themselves in order to shed crocodile tears for a man they excoriate every day and every night showcase the nature of the system under which we live and the separate class interests that divide the American people. While talking heads on CNN and New York Times columnists virtue-signal their concern for the latest murderous president, policemen are shooting unarmed people of color in their cars and in their homes with impunity; renters who lost their homes to the COVID-19 lockdown are being evicted; unemployment benefits still haven’t been renewed; people in the Middle East are getting blown up by hellfire missiles; and cultural gatekeepers have nothing to say.

We might not have internalized the fact that they are our enemies.

But they know we are theirs.

  2. meamjojo says:

One of the few Rall postings I agree with 100%.

When Trump got sick, Biden/Harris magnanimously canceled their Trump attack ads. Say what?

This is why the Dems always wind up on the losing side, because they bleed compassion for lost causes.

They are in a street fight with Trump. In a street fight, when the other guy trips and falls, you don’t kick back and say “Hey buddy, I’ll wait for you to get back up. Take your time.”

No, you use that opportunity to get in a few more kicks and then when he is stunned from the kicks, you grab his head and smash it into the ground. Sheese.

  3. anonymous[245] • Disclaimer says:

Speaking of “columnists [who] virtue-signal,” Mr. Rall once again has to show everyone that he’s a devout Progressive with adolescentisms like

neo-Nazis and cops, who are often the same people

    and

policemen are shooting unarmed people of color in their cars and in their homes with impunity

Back on June 27, he similarly caricatured “the murder of George Floyd.” (Nothing since, though, about the autopsy report or the complete recording of the incident that was cynically suppressed and since brushed off by the Establishment.)

The militarization of policing in our country is a problem that mature writers like Radley Balko (remember that guy?) have shown, in books and annotated essays. Hipshot histrionics and race politics focused on media-curated atrocities distract, divide, and manipulate people, and thus derail reform.

Keep in mind that he’s only published here because the similarly ProgLite Tom Engelhardt left the roster. Can anyone think of an Unz columnist who has less of substance to say about more topics than Mr. Rall?

    Good one, Ted.
    I especially like your

Hint: one of them, in a way, indirectly associates with your book title.

  5. Republicans, members of the self-proclaimed Party of Personal Responsibility, ought to acknowledge that this man has been asking for this.

Well that settles it. Your TDS has driven you completely insane.

It is literally impossible to get through more than a few sentences of this screed. Every sentence can be successfully challenged as a steaming pile of nonsense.

Yet you apparently believe it fervently.

Literally, this is insanity on show. Thanks for making it clear how far out there a great amount of people have become as documented by Brett Easton Ellis in White.

Ted, I used to read your strips in the alternative weeklys in different big cities I lived in during the past few decades, but I never had the slightest idea how crazy/angry you were. Kind of like John Cusack announcing recently that he would never again speak to anyone of his family and friends who do not hate Trump.

Way to go, Ted and John. Alienate over half your audience with petty nonsense. Way to go.

It is odd how deranged leftists so frequently screech about 200,000 Americans dying “on Trump’s watch”, but none of them can tell us what Trump was supposed to do differently. Was he supposed to send the army in to NY and NJ and physically stop those states from murdering the elderly with their “dump covid patients in nursing homes” policies? Why don’t the two governors responsible for all those deaths get any blame, but Trump gets it all?

  8. BuelahMan says:

When someone with access to this site pens “Trump coddles neo-Nazis “, we all know what a blithering, idiotic liar he is. At least it occurred early in the piece so I didn’t read all the malarkey.

    So…he’s an American president?

I suppose, with some, “coddling” would be of CIA mercenaries and foreign militias founded by the state dep, plus Antifa rioters, but that aside… Let’s be realistic. Compared every president from Clinton onward, Trump alone deserves a Nobel peace prize thus far, in terms of not starting b.s. foreign adventures at the expense of some poor devils.

  13. Trump is not the real issue here. Yes, the left hates Trump, but so does a large portion of the so called right. I’ve often said that if Trump were to be the target of an assassination attempt, the reaction from people like (insert name of GOP establishment figure here) would be something like “tsk, tsk, what a shame. But he had it coming you know.”

Trump is crude, crass, vulgar, has no manners, and worst of all has a fake tan and that combover. So? Except for the tan and the hair you’ve just described LBJ, or liberal icon Ted Kennedy for that matter. Trump is merely a lightning rod. What is actually going on here is that the political class hates half the country and are actively rooting for harm in some form to visit them, whether it’s financial ruin, illness, or even death. Trump may be gone in a few weeks, and when he is you can expect an orgy of payback and score settling on a large scale, maybe even with some gratuitous violence thrown in just so everyone understands who’s in charge.

  14. @meamjojo

The democrats have never been known to bleed compassion for lost causes unless those lost causes are theirs… Give us a break please. In the department of hypocrisy, the far left wins hands down. The reason the democrats lose is much more simple, to wit, most people have a view of life that puts them slightly to the right politically speaking and they don’t like crazy shit and people who are intent on enforcing it onto people. If the democrats couldn’t use the race card and every other vile device at their disposal they would never win a single election in this country, despite the fact that they have all the money.

  15. @Sgt. Joe Friday

Excellent post. I couldn’t agree more on your view of Trumps presidency and his personality. Despite this, the man is a leader and I believe he really does want to do good in his own way. He’s been talking about China and the rest of the world and how they take advantage of this country for over thirty five years. We know this since he was recorded saying so, on dozens of TV and talk shows during a time when the political left thought him a “cool” guy, a celebrity and a brilliant entrepreneur, not just a reality show figure.. Yes,it’s hard to believe these same people now hate him intensely to the point they wish him dead, but that says more about the political left, then about Donald Trump.

The Bidens taking money from Ukraine and China, Hillary’s emails and the Clinton Foundation, the Black Jesus spying on President Trump, the phony Steele dossier, the drag-it-out-as-long-as-you-can Mueller Report, corruption at the FBI and CIA, impeachment, etc.

The establishment (Dems and Repubs) absolutely hates Trump because he is against globalization, the offshoring of jobs, Big Tech monopolies, open borders, endless wars and unlimited immigration. The establishment elite are being paid big money to protect vested corporate interests, the people be damned.

TDS reveals the true face of the egalitarian.

Bitter, resentful men that actually wish sickness upon others.

I don’t call it any level of decency to skew things so false and fraudulent for so many years. She was touted as this very high IQ achiever and appeared all bright eyed and bushy tailed on Joe Rogan what? 4 years ago?

  21. This is all just nonsense talk about the latest news flash, a news flash that will fade away within a few weeks. The issue is not Trump. Or Biden. The issue is identity politics. Which includes conservative identity politics. The one identity that identity politics refuses to address is the only identity that matters: Money. Who got it. Who don’t. And why.

Anything else is just goose feathers.

  22. TG says:

I agree. Donald Trump is not my friend.

But Joe Biden is my enemy. “Backstabbing” Joe Biden has spent over half a century selling out the American working class for money. Pretty much everything that has hammered the working class: an excessive rate of cheap-labor immigration, the outsourcing of our industries, the endless pointless winless wars that serve only to enrich politically connected defense contractors, the sky-high costs of medical care that are bankrupting even people with “good” (i.e., expensive) insurance, the changing of bankruptcy laws to force an entire generation into a lifetime of debt-slavery (even the founders of this republic – no socialists they – felt that people needed to get out of unpayable debt – but not the Senator from Mastercard Joe Biden!), I could go on.

Trump is Bozo the Clown. Biden is Vlad the Impaler.

Trump is a sugar pill. Biden is Arsenic.

Of course the MSM won’t report on his career of whoring himself to Wall St or his plagiarism.

They just want to sneak him over the finish line so he can eventually abdicate to their real candidate which is the Jamaican-Indian lawyer that pretends to be Black.

    “Lifetime of debt-slavery”

In Germany, the supposed shining example for American leftist/Democrat nut-cases, of social justice, debt forgiveness is after thirty years which means that anyone who ends up in the state of financial destitution and unable to repay, is lost for the rest of his/her life.

I’m not sure exactly what that means. I don’t know about Germany. But.

The founders of this republic were serious people who believed in personal responsibility and paying your debts. They also felt that if debts become too onerous, people have to be able to get out from under and get a fresh start, or it will become toxic and the society will stagnate under the dead yoke of rent collection. This is not Karl Marx talking, it’s George Washington and Alexander Hamilton et al.

And here is another thought: if banks that make bad loans to people who are poor risks, end up losing money, then banks might stop making bad loans to people who are poor risks! Think of that! Oh, I suppose you will accuse me of being a ‘communist.’ The current Neo-liberal dogma is that if banks made bad loans to poor risks, they need to be bailed out at the taxpayer’s expense or else banks won’t make bad loans to poor risks. Hey, how’s that working out? Actually it’s working out swell if you are Joe Biden, because he’s been paid handsomely to help bring this about. The rest of us? Not so much.

  31. @TG

WRONG on Biden as Vlad The Impaler.
Vlad was a bastion of defense against the Islamization of Europe and dished it out harshly and spectacularly by jamming lumber from bottom to top on a lot of Muzzy goat rapers…A Good Thing.
I believe the ancient tales of him doing the same to the lower ranks of his own subjects was Soviet style inverted Reality as regards Who did What to Who; as in, wooden doored shower rooms and Zyklon-B.

Biden is more appropriately compared to Renfield, the whacked out bug eater slave of Dracula.
Kameltoe of Kalifornication being the vampire, as well as a Kali Cult prostitute.
