People born in the 1960s may be the last human beings who will get to live out their full actuarial life expectancies.

“Climate change now represents a near- to mid-term existential threat” to humanity, warns a recent policy paper by an Australian think tank. Civilization, scientists say, could collapse by 2050. Some people may survive. Not many.

Some dismiss such purveyors of apocalyptic prognoses as hysterics. To the contrary, they’re Pollyannas. Every previous “worst-case scenario” prediction for the climate has turned out to have understated the gravity of the situation. “Paleoclimatologists have shown that past warming episodes show that there are mechanisms which magnify its effects, not represented in current climate models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to the Paris Accords,” reports The Independent. It’s probably too optimistic to assume that we’ll make it to 2050.

Gives new meaning to Generation X.

Millennials and the children we call Generation Z face the horrifying prospect that they will get stuck with the tab for humanity’s centuries-long rape of planet Earth, the mass desecration of which radically accelerated after 1950. There is an intolerably high chance that today’s young people will starve to death, die of thirst, be killed by a superstorm, succumb to a new disease, boil to death, asphyxiate from air pollution, be murdered in a riot or shot or blown up in a war sparked by environmentally related political instability long before they survive to old age.

Long threatened, never taken seriously, not even now that it’s staring us right in the face, human extinction is coming for the children and grandchildren we claim to love but won’t lift a finger to save.

Shelves sag under the weight of books that have been written arguing that we still have a chance to save ourselves. I wish I could believe that. Human population has tripled since the 1950s. More than a million species have gone extinct. Ninety percent of the fish in the ocean have vanished, replaced by one billion tons of plastic. Half of the trees have been cut down. The polar ice cap is melting; it’s never coming back.

We can’t stop global warming. An increase of four degrees Celsius over the baseline set at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution means game over. We’re well on our way there. It doesn’t make sense to think that we can avoid extinction.

What if we woke up and demanded action from our political leaders? Radical problems require radical solutions; only the most radical of solutions could resolve the most radical problem of ruining our planet’s ability to sustain us: revolution. We would have to rise up and abolish — immediately — consumer capitalism in all the major greenhouse gas-producing nations, prioritize cleaning the environment as the human race’s top concern, and pivot to an economic mindset in which we extract the bare minimum that we need for survival and nothing more.

ORDER IT NOW

Voting might achieve some incremental reforms, but reform falls far short of what we require. Saving our young people (and their children, should they be foolish enough to have any) would require global revolution, the violent overthrow of the ruling elites and replacing them with people who understand what must be done. It would need to happen today. Fifty years ago would be better. Got a time machine?

None of this is going to happen. We are going to sleepwalk to our doom in a haze of social media and corporate entertainment distraction.

So it’s time for people who are younger than I am to start thinking about how they want to spend the rest of their likely-to-be-truncated lives, and how they plan to face mass premature death.

Pending human extinction destroys the answers provided by religion and philosophy. Knowing that there won’t be anyone to know that we were ever here raises the question: Why bother to do anything? This column, this year’s “important” presidential election, love, hate — everything will lose its meaning when the last member of our species draws her last breath. Earth is unlikely to be visited by an alien archaeologist who can uncover everything we’ve created (assuming any of it survives) and figure out what any of it meant before the sun expands into a red giant and ends it all.

Much is to be said for hedonism: Eat, drink, have sex, and don’t bother to sort your recycling, for tomorrow, we die. Stoicism has its advantages, too; go out with dignity rather than weeping and gnashing your teeth and making your fellow survivors miserable.

Nihilism is about to become the best worst possible life strategy. Life is meaningless. That will soon become obvious. Moral principles and relics of a time with a future will blow away like the irradiated dust we leave behind.

None of this will have mattered.

If you are going to write such drivel, at least have the good sense to use a pseudonym. Using your real name let me know it was just garden variety stupidity and not parody therefore I didn’t get the laugh I should have.

Here’s a brief sample of those “worst-case scenario” predictions:
    https://cei.org/blog/wrong-again-50-years-failed-eco-pocalyptic-predictions

Can you show us a similar list of “worst-case scenario” predictions that turned out to be, as you say, understated? I’ll even give you a pass on your insistence that “every” worst-case prediction was understated, since you’ve repeatedly demonstrated that you don’t have a firm grasp of the English language.

If you insist on making up apocalyptic fantasies for the future, that’s your right. But please stop lying to us about easily verifiable history. Between this, and your previous insane comedy piece, I’m having a hard time deciding whether you’re genuinely malicious, or merely stupid.

I see you’ve been hard at it once again Ted. – Following the P.C. script that is.
Never mind conducting any INDEPENDANT research to get to the truth behind the rhetoric. I mean, what would be the point in that when there’s Fear Porn and nihalsm to be spead?

Never mind that the IPCC is split into separate “working groups” and that group A only is tasked with the work of highlighting ONLY human impacts on the climate. Never mind that IPCC “climate models” wholy ignore the impact our sun has on determining Earths climate, holding the sus’s energy at a constant without reference to solar cycles.
Never mind the Massive increases in ice cover at the Antarctic.
Never mind the well documented scientific frauds commited in the name of “proving” that mankind (and NOT the economy) is the enemy.

Never mind the agenda set by the Club of Rome in 1968 as outlined in its Report from Iron Mountain; an agenda for the control of human populations in “peace time” which recommends making humanity itself the enemy through the rhetoric of “environmentalism (later “global warming”, later still “climate change”).

And certainly you should ignore entirely all of those climatologist who continue to warn that Earth is on the cusp of a new ice age for which we should be preparing NOW. After all, unlike any other branch of science, in this, the “science” of “global warming theory” on this alone, “the science is settled”!

So everybody really ought to panic. I mean, what else is there for it? We didn’t react fast enough when we were told we were all going to be under water by the year 2000, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2020…. It seems now we have until 2050, but it’s still too late.

Pointless, spiritually vacant, interlectually pointless, hedonistic nihalism is the very best thing our young people can engage in right now!

If only “israel” was developing “benign” and “harmless”, not to mention legal, highs and targeting our young people with them. That’d be cool!
Our children could then go out in a cloud of chemically induced psychosis and physical blindness… possibly. Wont that be nice?

Mind you, maybe the looming war with Iran will actually “go nuclear”! A good, long nuclear winter to cool things down a bit. Yeah, that should do it!

Is this the hope? That if you and your ilk distract us with demonstrably ridiculous climate alarmism our attention will be shifted away from the war games being played out in the M.E. and the likely consequences of these games if we fail, as a people, to pay attention?

You really are a dangerous man Ted Rall. Sadly you’re one of many attempting to distract and panic the worlds people so that your ideological masters can have their way with the planet and everything on it.

You really should pull your head our of your back-side and start paying attention to what the “conspiracy theorists” are saying, even if only out of interlectual curisity, befire it’s toi late.

    Kali.

  6. Some relevant history

In the 1960s-70s, it was not ‘global warming’ but ‘Ice age coming!’, that was the official scare of ‘scientists’ … A 1979 TV commercial with Leonard Nimoy, Mr Spock of Star Trek, warning us how hundreds of millions could freeze to death in the time of viewers’ grandchildren:

But then, Ted Rall got massively duped by the CIA hoax of ‘Edward Snowden’, allegedly first ‘leaking’ to Dick Cheney’s friend at the Washington Post, quickly replaced by ex-gay-pornography seller of ‘hairystuds’ & Rothschild employee Greenwald … so it’s not surprising Ted Rall is duped by other major media hoaxes

  7. Turns out we misanthropes are the only ones who got it right?

You probably thought you were God’s highest creation.

  8. Wow, time to suck on the business end of a shotgun … no wonder they want to grab the guns. BTW, reinsert the warming periods left out of the data-sets and re-run the simulations.

  9. Anonymous[288] • Disclaimer says:

Ted, don’t get so worked up over global warming. The romans used to grow vineyards in Englad and when the vikings landed on greenland it could support agriculture. there are receding glaciers that reveal forests underneath. the earth used to be warmer and doomsday didn’t occur.
    https://www.livescience.com/39819-ancient-forest-thaws.html
But all the plastics and pollutants and overpopulation is depresssing. i for one won’t have kids as a misanthrope it would be hypocritical for me to do so.

    keep strong Ted!

  11. Amuser says:

It is geo-engineering that is causing the current ‘climate change’ problems and the real issue facing us today is the pollution of natural ecosystems and their inhabitants. Neither of which has anything to do with the mindless dribble put out about CO2, which has a negligible effect upon the environment when compared to H2O. To not know or inform people of this in your article makes me suspect that you are an extremely lazy researcher or a common shill for we know who. Either way it has been a waste of time reading this ‘just more fear porn’ article. I understand the importance of giving a platform for all opinions, but this is such a lame example of one that it just lowers the tone of both this debate and publication. Oh well, at least it is a rare slide in an otherwise excellent site.

  12. anonymous[245] • Disclaimer says:

Gloomy, but at least Mr. Rall still recycles. A similar column published here on September 28 generated questions and refutations that he could only ignore. As I concluded then:

“The article should not have been published because it is uninformative hysteria from someone who apparently doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

  13. Haha says:

A more idiotic and ignorant article on climate change I have not read. No scientific knowledge, no reasoning, just hysteria. Now let me tell you something, Ted. Man is not as powerful as he imagines himself to be, neither for the better nor for the worse. I am no scientist, but whatever little I understand about the natural world is that the planet has been around for billions of years, is prone to ice ages and warm ages and will continue to do so. Professional scientists confess to understanding very little about the process, though fools keep jumping up and down yelling one hysterical nonsense after another. In the 1970’s the scare was a new ice age; after thirty years the fashionable nonsense was to be global warming.

I love the environment and revere Mother Earth more than any hysterical fool. I will do anything to protect nature and the planet, but I will not yield to fools like you.

  14. @Anonymous

    I’ll go one further.
In Iceland, there is a tourist attraction called Jökulsárlón (Glacier River Lagoon) on the Southeast coast. While there in the early 70s, there was no bridge across a small river from the lagoon to the ocean, people drove through it. I met a man who told me that the glacier used to be down to the high tide line when he first crossed it on horseback in 40 years earlier. By the 80’s there was a bridge, and a James Bond movie scene was filmed on the lagoon. In the 90s, it was discovered that the lagoon was actually a fjord. The river had widened, and a longer bridge built. Today the face of the glacier is about 1/2 a mile from the ocean. There is no doubt “warming” has played a part. I last saw the man I had met 35 years previously, in 2006. When talking about Jökulsárlón growing so large, he said that if it is a fjord, then it must have been a fjord before there was a glacier, i.e. it had to have been warmer at some time in past.
Climate change promoters ignore the obvious, the old man didn’t.

  16. Now I fully understand Pauli’s comment “…it’s not even wrong”.

  17. Tusk says:

I’m beginning to think these people just want global revolution and ethnic cleansing, ‘workers revolts’ and ‘climate change’ are just the facade to facilitate a violent takeover of the world.

Just joking! I know that’s what these people want, not stability or freedom, but the power to make the world and man in their own image of delusion. I think Ayn Rand was right when she called it a death cult, similarly so was Chesterson when he said:

That little urchin with the gold-red hair, whom I have just watched toddling past my house, she shall not be lopped and lamed and altered; her hair shall not be cut short like a convict’s; no, all the kingdoms of the earth shall be hacked about and mutilated to suit her. She is the human and sacred image; all around her the social fabric shall sway and split and fall; the pillars of society shall be shaken, and the roofs of ages come rushing down, and not one hair of her head shall be harmed

Some may say Chesterson was in league with the socialists or communists with what he wrote but I disagree, these people just want to free people from one prison and put you in another while they wreak havoc elsewhere.

  18. Ted Rall: “Human population has tripled since the 1950s.”

All over the developed world, TFRs have been falling dramatically since 1950 due to the use of scientific birth control methods.

But probably nothing truly effective will be done to further restrict population growth since the region with fastest growth now and for the foreseeable future is Africa. This will pose a problem for the left, since they have such a worshipful attitude toward negroes. They won’t want to face the racial implications, and will instinctively shy away from “blaming” them for the increase. The right won’t be able to deal with it either, since the right would be called racist for their effort, and they run from that label like a scalded dog. Maybe a pandemic that limits the growth will occur naturally there, but I think it’s unlikely that the negroes themselves will voluntarily use such methods to restrain their own increase, and that disease could make a big enough dent in it to matter.

  19. Angharad says:

Well, Ted – the real problem is overpopulation. The Earth is WAY over carrying capacity. And it’s NOT White people. Whites are the only demographic that really cares. It’s the Browns, Blacks, and Yellows that are causing the pollution, and the pollution is real.

Let’s do something to decrease massive non-White populations, mmm’kay? Especially Blacks. They are overall, very, very, destructive.

    • Replies: @paranoid goy
  20. @Angharad

Wow, yours is the first comment that suits perfectly the intellectual level of the main article! The overpopulation bit is another form of the same scaremongering. As far as we can tell, we throw away more food than we eat. Only, those who have to do the actual growing hardly ever gets to do the eating or throwing away, they are just low-level labourers, earning as little as what you can get away with, what do you feel? There’s too many of us poor bastards around, anyway, eh what old chap?
