On February 9, Nike sent a letter to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler and city officials asking for more police at their MLK Community Store, which has been closed for months because of ongoing retail theft, with the shoe brand even proposing to pay law enforcement directly if it would bring them the protection they were requesting.
According to KGW8, Nike proposed two options. The company was open to creating an “intergovernmental agreement” with the city of Portland to directly fund full-time police officers who would be selected to police the store. A second option would be to pay off-duty Portland Police Bureau officers as contracted security.
According to the Oregonian, Nike released a statement that said, “Because a safe and secure workplace is essential for our employees, consumers, and communities, we have proposed a sustained and coordinated partnership with the City to better protect employees, consumers, and the community surrounding our MLK Community Store.”
Sarah Mensah, Nike’s North America general manager, and chief security officer Joe Marsico said their company closed the MLK Community Store “in response to deteriorating public safety conditions and rapid escalation in retail theft.
The letter sent to Wheeler and Portland officials said “to date, the proposed solutions offered and the current public safety situation” did not leave any room for the store to reopen, leading to the company’s new proposal.
Nike said that under their new plan, they would continue to hire private security in addition to the police. The difference is that the private security contracted by the company is not legally allowed to intervene physically in a retail theft crime, which is a common practice in American retail stores. The police would have the power to detain and arrest individuals caught in the commission of a crime.
The letter stated the company was “at a critical juncture” and “it is critical that one of these two models be made effective prior to May 1, 2023.”
The company said they were evaluating “business decisions impacting retail operations” and may not be able to reopen the store, which first opened in 1984, without the city agreeing to one of the two proposals.
Local news reports that Portland community safety director Stephanie Howard said Nike’s proposal was unlikely to move forward because of Portland Police Bureau staffing.
“We already rely heavily on OT to reach minimum staffing levels for regular shifts, so there is no way we could provide dedicated officers to any business, regardless of its willingness to pay for the costs,” Howard said.
Howard added, “Resuming secondary employment might be possible eventually if we can clear the DPSST backlog, which is the largest hurdle to our restaffing efforts.”
The DPSST backlog refers to the lack of new police recruits in Portland who have passed the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
Nike. Portland. And the store was called the “MLK Community Store.”

I used to think about how my own demise would play out. The women in my family tend to be long-lived, the men, not so much. But, they tended to be cut down by cancer and other issues from smoking, drinking a bit too much, working around dangerous chemicals in their younger years, and such. I take fairly good care of myself, so I could see myself living well into my 80s or beyond.
I’m an only child, divorced, don’t have any kids. Not really close to either side of my family any more. So I always imagined that eventually, all my closest relatives would be dead, and I’d be a recluse. One day in the distant future, in the house, alone, I figured I’d probably take a fall down the stairs, or in the tub, or one of those other “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” moments. I’d just lay there, in agony, unable to get up, and slowly starve to death. Eventually, the mail would pile up , or the overgrown grass would tip someone off, or something, and the police would break in and see find my decomposing body.
That image used to scare the hell out of me. But, with the way elder care facilities are these days, suddenly I’m okay with it.

Let me give you an example of how a shoe store could dissuade shoplifting by design:
A display sample shoe (numbered at the display) with a wire-cable ran through the sole secured with a bolt inside and about 4 feet of slack line is put on shelves at one end of the store so customers can pick them up, look them over, and let another person inspect them when considering them for purchase. If they like the shoe, they can go to the front desk and request to try on shoe # 25, and place their socked foot on a shoe measurement scale, and putting their finger in a fingerprint scanner. A box of size 10 shoes can be given to the customer to try on at that time from storage at the back of the store behind locked doors. If they like them, they buy it. If they put them on and walk out the front door, the store has their fingerprint on record to give to the police as well as the security video.
Since we can sell stuff on Facebook marketplace, there is an incentive for people to lift oodles of merchandise. Retailers have to come up with a solution unless they want to give up on certain markets with lax shoplifting laws. Nike could afford my idea, easily.

Good idea on the nursing home. Last week I had lunch with an old friend from elementary school days and learned that while his elderly mother (now deceased) was in a nursing home, her mind having slipped away, she was given a physical exam that revealed she had herpes. It turned out that one if the Africans employed there had had his way with her, knowing she would never be able to tell anyone, even if she had been conscious.
I suspect this sort of thing is much more common than most of us realize.

There was another incident of a young woman, who has been in a coma for years, giving birth to a niglet. Every male in the facility had to be tested, lol. The negro refused to do the test.
Many years ago, I had a friend whose mother was in a nursing home where a rape ape was found to have been raping the incapacitated women. Luckily, his mother wasn’t one of them.
My advice to anyone who has to put a relative in one of these places is to find the whitest town you can and put the relative in a home there. Even if it means visiting is a lot harder, at least safety doesn’t become a major issue in terms of rape or physical abuse.
I had a friend who worked in a nursing home for a few years and one thing people don’t know is that nursing homes will often staff each shift poorly so that one worker will be responsible for taking care of up to fifteen patients per shift all by themselves. It’s why he quit the job as he said the job didn’t pay enough and the staffing ratio made it impossible to take care of the patients to the level they deserved.
As for nursing homes and how they operate, there’s a reason why neither my step-dad or mother were placed in one and were instead taken care of at home. Once a person is placed in a nursing home, fifty percent of everything that person owns is seized- that includes bank accounts, stocks, and real estate. An attorney (Elder Care Law) gave me a booklet about it entitled, “Saving Momma’s Home” which detailed everything. Which brings me back to the staffing issue mentioned in the previous paragraph- the nursing homes have the money- they just don’t spend it on the patients nor on staffing.
Absolutely, you are far better off hiring someone to come to your home and provide help as needed.
Those nursing homes are not cheap and they hire any scumbag off the street.

That said, if i hadn’t had 2 sisters,a brother,a brother in law,my wife, and a bunch of hired help Mother Dearest would have out lived me. When the end finally arrived, my response was one of tremendous relief. Funeral at 2:00 PM. At the airport at 5:15 PM for a 10 day vacation in Mexico, 9 years without a vacation. Should’a booked a month.
I’ve heard different variations of what happens when you go into a nursing home, so I wonder if it varies by state? Or perhaps it’s changed over the years?
The closest personal experience I’ve had is when my grandmom went in one, towards the end of her life. It was something like $13,000 per month. I think Medicare picked up part of the tab, at first, but it ran out fast. I do remember they got one full payment out of us, but then we made the second, but she died around the middle of the month, so we got about half of it back.
I forget exactly what it was called, but I also remember Grandmom being in some kind of assisted place, on the hospital grounds, that was around $5200/mo, once medicare ran out. She got a little better, and then went into an assisted living place, which was essentially a converted house with wheelchair facilities, where they had people on the grounds to feed you, help you move around, bathe, etc. I think they did have a nurse on the premises during the day. That was around $2700-2800/mo. Neither of these two was a full-blown nursing home, though. This was also in the 2014-2015 timeframe, so I’m sure prices have gone up considerably since then.
I have a friend, in Pennsylvania, whose grandmother went into a nursing home. In that case, I think they forced a sale on the house, and all the assets went into an escrow account. When she died, there was a little money left over, that went to the next of kin.
