Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot tightened a citywide curfew for young people on Monday, a day after she restricted access by unaccompanied minors to downtown Chicago’s Millennium Park following the weekend shooting death of a 16-year-old boy near “The Bean” sculpture at the park.
The citywide weekend curfew for minors now will begin each night at 10 p.m., instead of the 11 p.m. curfew in place since the 1990s, Lightfoot said. At Millennium Park, which is a popular stop for tourists and Chicago residents, minors will not be allowed in the park after 6 p.m. Thursday through Sunday without an adult.
“We need to make sure they are safe and importantly that our young people understand and respect basic community norms, respect for themselves, respect for each other, and we must ensure that every one of our residents and visitors — no matter who they are or where they come from or how old they are — are able to safely enjoy our public spaces,” the mayor told reporters at a news conference.
Lightfoot said she hoped and expected that people would abide by the restrictions and that it would not lead to widespread arrests. She said they “don’t want to arrest children,” but those who break the law will be.
“My interest is not rounding up young people and throwing them in the back of a wagon,” Lightfoot said. But, she said, those who do not abide “by clear directions on how they have to conduct themselves in public, we’re not going to hesitate to take action.”
The announcements come at a time of year when residents and tourists alike flock to the downtown area and the lakefront by the tens of thousands. Millennium Park is the centerpiece of the lakefront, the “jewel,” as Lightfoot called it, that is the site of concerts and other events.
On Sunday, police announced that a 17-year-old boy who was taken into custody following Saturday evening’s shooting had been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated battery. He was due in juvenile court Monday.
Another teen, who was allegedly armed with a ghost gun — a weapon that does not have a serial number and can’t be traced — was arrested in connection to the shooting, police said.
In total, 26 minors and five adults were arrested during the gathering in the park on Saturday evening. A total of eight guns were confiscated and five gun arrests were made, police said.
Hundreds of people were at the park earlier Saturday as part of demonstrations around the U.S. against the recently leaked draft opinion that suggests the Supreme Court is prepared to overturn the nationwide right to abortion. It is unclear if the teen who was shot had taken part in the 1 p.m. demonstration, however participants had largely dispersed by late afternoon.
ORDER IT NOWThe shooting comes amid a surge in deadly violence in the city in recent years. This year, Chicago has recorded 779 shooting incidents and 194 homicides, compared to 898 shootings and 207 homicides during the same period in 2021, according to figures last updated by the Chicago Police Department on May 8.
Chicago and some other U.S. cities reported dramatic spikes in homicide totals last year. Chicago’s 797 homicides in 2021 — its highest toll for any year in a quarter century — eclipsed the totals in the two bigger U.S. cities, surpassing Los Angeles’ tally by 400 and New York’s by nearly 300.
“The Bean” sculpture is a popular tourist attraction in downtown Chicago. It is formally known as “Cloud Gate,” but it came to be known as “The Bean” for its bean-like shape.

“Chicagoans feel like they own the Loop,” said Bill Savage, who has taught Chicago literature and culture for 30 years at Northwestern University. “If the center of our city experiences this kind of violence, it hits everybody in a way. If it’s happening in the Loop, it is about you.”
It’s not about discrimination. It’s not about white supremacy. It’s not about systemic inequality or implicit bias or the push for diversity, inclusion or equity (DIE).
What we are witnessing in real time is our ancestors warnings about what would happen to their posterity if racial realities they recognized in their time went unheeded and unimpeded.
Sundown towns made sense in their time, because it meant protecting western civilization for their posterity. High rates of black crime were discernible then, and elected leaders put in place laws to protect people, private property and commercial interests from the consequences of individual black crime.

Before I retired I had to travel for Chicago on business and spent time in that area.
The tourists and business (often convention) visitors were almost all white, many from the farm belt areas in the Midwest on their annual summer visit to the “Big City”.

This reminds me of the movie “Conrack” (which was based on a true story) where negroes are living on an island off the coast of South Carolina, none of them can swim and they’re terrified of the water since, “if dey fall in, dey sink like a stone.” They had access to an entire ocean of water and still didn’t learn to swim so that was no one’s fault but their own. Black Sacramento high school administrator who said she was targeted in a series of racially motivated incidents on campus late last year is resigning from the Sacramento City Unified School District. [LAWSUIT???
West Campus High School Assistant Principal Elysse Versher told the district this week that she will not return for the next school year.
She disclosed in the message that harassment she experienced harmed her health and led her to consider suicide.
“After experiencing multiple stressed induced seizures on November 10, 2021, and an unsuccessful suicide attempt in December 2021, I now have the strength to leave this hostile working environment for good. For these reasons, I am resigning from my position as Assistant Principal effective immediately,” said Versher in an email to the district.

Not too long ago my mother told me a story about how back in the 1950’s at a local country fair in the Midwestern town she grew up in three adult male negroes showed up and were making lewd sexual remarks to white girls ranging from ages 10 to 15. Let’s just say this didn’t sit well with the white menfolk most of whom were WWII veterans, so the negroes were smacked around and escorted out of the fair with the stipulation that they better never show their faces in that town again and they didn’t.

Why couldn’t a chronological teen identify as a non-teen? The nerdy fellow could persuasively argue that he has a part-time job, a clean record, even reads books, and is more mature than many adults. Conversely, a lot of chronological adults are really teenage-like in terms of their immaturity or even rap sheet. This curfew’s rationale is an unwarranted assumption about who behaves decently and who does not. In the parlance of constitutional lawyers, it is over-inclusive and under-inclusive. It is different from other age-restricted laws.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and put myself on at least one government watch list. I don’t condone the killing of innocents. However, I consider these kinds of incidents as inevitable in our present condition. If you continuously apply heat, the pot is going to boil. When it boils over, don’t act surprised and outraged.
I expressed a similar view to an interesting person I met on the beach in New Zealand, one week before the Christchurch massacre – that something like that was inevitable. He didn’t believe me at the time.
Not only are these incidents inevitable, they are necessary, or nothing will change in our downward trajectory.
I’m not arguing that their perpetrators are blameless, the way left-wing terrorists are. They must pay the price for their actions. They knew that from the start.
Call them nutcases; call them monsters. I consider them tragic heroes. They knowingly sacrifice themselves in the cause of my children’s future, whether that eventually proves to be effective or even counter-productive in the end. You may question their judgment or their morality, but they have more guts than any of us.
From a young age, people are introduced to that word with the most negative associations of mindless bigotry, hatred, mass murder, ands cruelty.

I’ve made several cross country railroad trips via AMTRAK, with an overnight stop in Chicago. It’s a really a great city to walk, hub of the Midwest, lots of history, real Americana.

Drowning in a 8′ deep pool where you can sink to the bottom and push off to make it to the other side is a different story altogether. I’ve swam in water over 1000′ deep, it’s no different than swimming in 10′, keeping your head above the water is what matters.
