The U.S. Army is overturning the convictions of 110 Black soldiers — 19 of whom were executed — after they were found guilty of murder, mutiny and assault after a riot during the summer of 1917.
Deputy Secretary of the Army Michael Mahoney directed the Army Review Boards Agency to “set aside” the convictions of all soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, U.S. 24th Infantry Regiment, the Houston Chronicle reported. The records of the soldiers who were assigned to protect Camp Logan outside of Houston will now reflect that they served honorably.
The moves will be recognized in a ceremony on Monday at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum in Houston, according to the newspaper.
The soldiers were convicted of mutiny, murder and assault, the Chronicle reported.
“It can’t bring them back, but it gives them peace,” Angela Holder, whose great-uncle, Cpl. Jesse Moore, was one of the executed soldiers, told the Chronicle. “Their souls are at peace.”
The decision, reached weeks ago by Army Secretary Christine Wormuth, restores each of the soldiers’ individual rights, privileges and properties lost, meaning that their descendants may now be eligible for benefits, the newspaper reported.
According to the Texas State Historical Association, the Black soldiers were assigned to protect Camp Logan, a 7-acre training base, after the United States declared war on Germany in the spring of 1917. On July 17, 1917, the Black soldiers were ordered to travel by train with seven white officers from the regimental encampment at Columbus, New Mexico, to Houston.
On Aug. 23, 1917, Camp Logan soldiers clashed with whites, according to the Chronicle. The disturbance resulted in the deaths of 17 people, including five police officers. Most of them were whites.
Around noon that day, Houston police officers Lee Sparks and Rufus H. Daniels arrested a Black soldier for allegedly interfering with their arrest of a Black woman who was at a game of craps, according to the TSHA.
When Cpl. Charles Baltimore, one of the 12 Black military police officers in the battalion, asked about the soldier’s arrest, words were exchanged and the MP was allegedly struck over the head. Baltimore was taken to police headquarters, but a rumor soon reached Camp Logan that he had been killed, the TSHA reported.
ORDER IT NOWBaltimore returned to the camp but was bloodied, according to the Chronicle. That night a shot rang out, and soldiers grabbed their rifles and set up a defensive perimeter around the camp. Sgt. Vida Henry ordered the soldiers to march out of the camp in formation, the newspaper reported.
According to the nonprofit Equal Justice Initiative’s version of the incident, more than 150 Black soldiers left the camp and approached the Houston city limits to confront the police. Although they planned a peaceful march to the police station, the soldiers encountered a mob of white men.
The Black soldiers killed 15 whites, including four police officers, and seriously wounded 12 others. One of those wounded, an officer, later died, according to the TSHA.
Henry was later found dead, the Chronicle reported. Pvt. Bryant Watson, Pvt. Wiley Strong and Pvt. George Bevens also were killed.

First, since all the people involved are dead, what does this do for them? What does this do for their living relatives, except mean that they be eligible for certain benefits; for example, if a dishonorable discharge is made into an honorable discharge?
Next, how does this help black Americans living today? Will it reduce out of wedlock births? Will it keep families functioning? Will it reduce crime? Will it discourage substance misuse? Will it encourage kids to behave better and work harder in school? Will it make people stop wearing saggy pants?
Finally, will it encourage certain people to engage in riotous, disorderly behavior?

Jonathan Lewis was taken off life support and pronounced dead at a hospital on the seventh of this month.
Despite his mob-attack-style beating having been recorded just about entirely on video, and then posted on social media, it was not until the fourteenth of this month (Yesterday as I type this here.) when the police in Las Vegas, Nevada made any arrests in this case. Only eight arrests were made in total though.
So when a Caucasian boy in America gets beaten down by a dozen or so NAPA’s just off campus from his high school, and the incident gets recorded on video, and then said video is posted online, and then he dies later as a result of his injuries, our mainstream media will promptly refer to this incident as a mere “fight” and obfuscate the racial aspects of the case entirely. As I recall, that incident didn’t get much airplay, because it turned out the home owner was also black, so it didn’t fit the narrative. I think she was at work, but had video cameras, and saw the invasion on either her phone or work computer, rushed home, caught them in the act as they were leaving. She tried to get them to stop, so she could get her stuff back, but they kept running, so she popped one of ’em.

Civil German occupation, as in France enabled the French people to survive until France was “liberated.” Tha arrival of American troops and warfare in France was so uncivil and harmful that Americans became hated even in following generations. Past historical events are not always understood in the present because of lack of actual facts.
If the US had a legitimate, Constitutional military, the USMC would have already protected and defended Americans from the domestic and foreign enemies taking over our country. A friend of mine was in the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam for about six months in 1969 before he was severely wounded, bringing his tour to an early close. What he said was something I’ve remembered for years: “One thing I learned in Vietnam was that American soldiers are no better than those of any other country. No worse, but no better.” He told of his unit (Company C, 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry) pausing on patrol while captured Vietnamese (who could have been soldiers or just unlucky civilians) were tortured for information and then murdered. Nobody batted an eye because the grueling and harsh lives they led had ground out all of their humanity. He noted that a guy in his unit had outright murdered a woman, but if investigators ever came around he’d probably say nothing because that same guy had saved his life on another occasion.
The moral of the story is to not get too enamored with the soldiers of one country over those of another, even if they belong to the “home team.” There’s a lot that takes place that people don’t know about, and most people probably don’t really want to know.

I read this book about the Vietnam War a few years ago, and most of the stories in it are similar to your friend’s. It’s a good, interesting read, but also very brutal and disturbing.

SBPDL readers will be delighted to know that it is possible to enlist in the US Army and be assigned to the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division in Alaska. (Only the division’s 2d Brigade Combat Team is actually Airborne. The 1st BCT is non-Airborne.) By becoming a member of 1-24th, you can take pride (sarc) in wearing the regimental insignia on your uniform.
During the Korean War the 24th Infantry Regiment, then part of the 25th Infantry Division, was known for collapsing, dropping their weapons and equipment, and fleeing when under attack, forcing the division’s other two regiments to fill the gap. The division commander wanted the Army to disband the unit because it was “untrustworthy and incapable of carrying out missions expected of an infantry regiment.” Army leadership saw that a black regiment with a mix of white and black officers didn’t work well, so instead blacks would be sprinkled throughout previously white units, figuring that might work out better — or at least the units wouldn’t perform as badly as an all-black unit. (Note: For a white officer an assignment to a black unit could be a career killer. Such units were seen as dreadful, undesirable assignments and only fit for those of little potential. Even if one had been assigned simply because a position had to be filled, the stigma remained.) Recognizing reality, the Army did indeed disband the 24th on 1 October 1951.
When the Amy reorganized from regiments to battle groups in the late 1950s, only a limited number of regimental designations were perpetuated for use and the 24th was not one of them. The change from battle groups to brigades in the early 1960s didn’t change the status of the dormant 24th; however, pressure from black groups led to the reactivation of the colors of the 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment in 1995 during the Clinton administration years. At that time it was part of the 25th Infantry Division. A reflagging of units in 2022 put it under the newly-reactivated 11th Airborne Division, which is actually only partially Airborne.
Given all of the reasons why any self-respecting white person should not enlist in the modern, woke Army, being assigned to 1-24th is just one more reason to turn one’s back on recruiters.
You are correct. In lands Germany occupied, there many who welcomed the change and even joined Germany’s armed forces. For example, the 5th SS Panzer Division “Viking” included volunteers from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Iceland, the Netherlands and Belgium. The unit was by no means unique in this regard.
It was also true of Koreans under Japanese occupation. Whatever their reasons, many tens of thousands joined the Japanese forces during the war. An Allied POW who had been a slave laborer in the construction of the “Death Railway” in Burma during the war noted that the Koreans, perhaps to demonstrate their loyalty to the Japanese cause, were particularly brutal and sadistic to POWs.
Back in Korea there were anti-partisan units made up of Koreans under Japanese leadership who had the job of hunting down and killing Koreans resisting the occupation. It’s bad enough to be a foreign occupier, but when it’s your own flesh and blood turning on you in the service of the hated occupier, there’s a blood feud that starts that won’t end until one side or the other is dead. There’s no “forgive and forget” in such situations.
Coming to terms with the level of collaboration with their Japanese occupiers is something the Koreans have never really resolved. Yes, today it’s common to despise the Japanese for what they did, but they’ve yet to own up to how so many of their fellow countrymen willingly and even enthusiastically went along with the occupiers.
There’s a lesson in there for Americans as well. Should our country fall to an external or internal enemy (some might say we already have), how many and how quickly will friends, family members and neighbors embrace their new rulers and, if it’s to their benefit, turn against you and turn you in to them?

I guess it’s a bit nerdy, but one aspiration I’ve always had is to have developed industrial machinery or equipment. I marvel and sometimes puzzle over “simple” things, today, for example, pondering how those pimentos were inserted into the olives we had on the table for Thanksgiving dinner (super nerdy).
Heck, some machines were designed so perfectly that they are still in use after a hundred years or more.
And I’ve come to the conclusion that genius does not complicate, but simplify. Something brought down to its most logical base form, becoming timeless: the paper clip, the zipper, buttons, the Fender Strat.
The point is, there are so many brilliant creations that have made life much easier, and yet those people responsible for such advancements are seldom recognized or lauded.
Instead, we have streets with negro names, black names we’ve never heard of on schools and other facilities. Negroes who have largely accomplished and contributed nothing except to the nebulous cause of social justice and the arenas of sports and entertainment. Nothing tangible. Nothing of intrinsic value.
