The customer steps into an enclosed and locked foyer that prevents entry into the store proper, tells the clerk what they want, passes the payment through a sliding box and then and only then receives the product they’ve paid for. On that note, I’m surprised that fast food restaurants in infested areas don’t operate the same way to prevent their dining areas turning into fight clubs or their employees being attacked or robbed, and the restaurant getting trashed.

Back in the day, I was driving to visit a client outside of Baltimore, Maryland. I wanted to bring a couple of cases of beer, so I stopped at a local establishment inside the beltway.

Was the situation really much worse in the Northern US than in the Southern US back then?
