I visited the Museum of the Confederacy before it was closed. Had an interesting conversation with a man who was displaying Civil War weapons. He told me that the South had, at the time, about $240 million invested in slaves, but only about $10 million in industrial capacity. I saw invoices for the sale of slaves; the going rate was about $3500. I believe, from my Hollywood education, that a labourer’s wage in those days was about a dollar a day; if so, that would mean a slave would break even, as an investment, in ten years. Disregarding expenses. If he worked as if he wanted to keep the job. If he lived that long. Seems like a helluvan iffy investment – unless you could breed more of them.

And here we all are today. It could have been all over in a generation. Now, will it ever be over?

A little fact you never hear any rich black athletes or entertainers mention. For the price of a pair of LeBron sneakers, they could purchase an African slaves freedom. Instead they are buying Lamborghinis, jewelry made with conflict diamonds, posing with stacks of cash, and complaining about being oppressed.
