The Great Replacement of white authors and their stories of fictional people by putting primarily black people on the cover of reprints of their books has been declared insufficiently woke. Why even celebrate white authors at all, regardless of if the characters they long ago created as fictional white individuals are reimagined as primarily black characters? [UPDATE: Barnes & Noble cancels launch of classic novels with new covers following online backlash, AMYNY.com, February 5, 2020]:
Barnes & Noble has shelved their plans to release a collection of classic books with new “culturally diverse” covers following internet backlash.
Penguin Random House and Barnes & Noble Fifth Avenue had originally up to give twelve classic young adult novels new covers, known as “Diverse Editions.” The books were meant hit the shelves on Feb. 5, and the books were to be on display in their massive storefront throughout the month of February. Barnes & Noble Fifth Avenue was also supposed to host a launch event to celebrate the release.
Each title had five culturally diverse custom covers designed to ensure the recognition, representation, and inclusion of various multiethnic backgrounds reflected across the country. The new covers are a part of a new initiative to champion diversity in literature.
Following the news of the new covers, many Twitter users expressed their anger and disappointment over the situation, citing that a better option would have been to promote authors of color.
Screw the idea of momentarily replacing white authors long dead by replacing their work about fictional white people with images of non-whites (primarily blacks)! After all, we have plenty of obviously mediocre non-white authors (primarily black) ready and willing to jump up to the literary plate on the on-deck circle to replace these overrated white authors!

Many classic novels were written before Africans wrote anything. Africans had no written languages.
It is only in the last 100 years or so that African blacks who came to Western countries culturally appropriated English and other Western languages to write in. Were any novels even written by blacks in any language before 1900?
Now the negroes and social justice leftists want to blackwash everything going back to Shakespeare and before. Just another way of defacing and destroying white European culture.
Okay, I spent a couple of minutes looking at definitions of the verb "appropriate"; Merriam-Webster.com, for instance, has "to take exclusive possession of: annex (no one should appropriate a common benefit)", and "to take or make use of without authority or right".
I'm guessing from your context that you, along with others (leftists), probably mean something like the second definition. Are you saying that they shouldn't be using English and other Western languages? Do languages have rightful owners?
"Cultural appropriation" is an erroneous concept no matter who uses it. I remember reading from Thomas Sowell something to the effect that people all over the world, throughout history, have adopted features of other cultures depending on what they considered to be most useful for their purposes. Sounds pretty normal to me.
Certain black people complain that whites "steal" their music, but they are still just as free to play jazz, for instance (that first definition quoted above doesn't apply), and I think white people have done well in acknowledging blacks as the innovators of this and other popular music styles, so the credit hasn't been stolen. And blacks dominate basketball, which to my knowledge, they didn't invent; does anyone accuse them of stealing it?
Anyway, I'd just like to see the whole concept thrown out.Replies: @Trevor, @kikz
I’m interested to see this long list of “classics” written by black authors that they say should be filling up the shelves during Black History Month. Do they mean those novels that center around hopeless misery, depravity, incestual rape, and of course systemic white racism written by that troika of Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, and Zora Neale Hurston that were hand-selected by academic elites long ago and have been burnt into the minds of every white and asian student in America under the age of 50 as the definitive examples of black literary genius?
Those are not fun or interesting books to read. They do not inspire the reader’s imagination. The average reader has no desire to ever pick up those books again after reading them once. While they might end with a slight message of hope, that message is meant for black readers only. Otherwise, non-black readers are intended to grapple with shame and guilt after reading them.
I actually didn’t mind these black novels in high school and college. Compared to other “classics”, they were quick and easy reads, and it was easy to write essays about them because their messages were so simple (“white people evil”, “black people oppressed, heroic, and brave”). If you didn’t want to grapple with the complexity of a Shakespeare play, or god forbid, a James Joyce novel, it was nice to whip off a paper on a black novel with the simple underlying theme of “it was a struggle growing up because of racism and my mom’s boyfriend raping me”.
I’m glad it got scrapped.
A 2008 poll of H.S. students asked them to name their top-10 America’s heroes (not including presidents). The top 3 were Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman. The national story is being replaced to a degree I would not have thought impossible.

For me, in college in the early 70s, my typical, liberal woke female english prof had us read black author Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man”. And, just like you said, one of the opening scenes is about a black father raping his young daughter while she was asleep in bed with he and his wife. The rest of the book was about a young black guy and his “life experiences” and being “marginalized”. Seriously, is this all blacks can write about? It’s the literary equivalent of that black “artist” who thought great art was to put a statue of Jesus in a vile of urine. They absolutely cannot write a beautiful story like The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, or Lassie. BTW, you should have seen the look on the prof’s face when, after she referred to the author as brilliant, I asked her if it ever occurred to her that maybe the author was just putting together something he thought White liberals would lap up and buy!

Notice that the covers here only portray characters and environments of the novels in question in an ethnic manner. Maybe the best solution for all would be if instead the authors were portrayed as ethnic on the cover. Shakespeare as a negro. Goethe as an Arab. Tolstoy as a Mexican. Then we could continue reading the great literature, while simultaneously celebrating colored accomplishments.
Those book covers are hilarious 😆Replies: @Boy the way Glenn Miller played

Would you prefer that blacks write novels in some African language(s) instead? After all, that would ensure that their novels would probably never get read by the “white man”–which would in turn means that whites won’t be spending their money on black novels–something that isn’t very good for blacks themselves.

If you have no written language, then the entire language consists of only the words that everybody knows. A dictionary is an absurdity. That restricts the total number of words in the language, and hence the number of concepts that it can express.
The White men who invented the written forms of the African languages also introduced words that had never existed before. Like, an entire system of numbers. Like abstract concepts. A Zulu could climb a tree, but he couldn't tell you how high. There is only "up" or "down". Two birds in a tree; Which is higher? Uh-uh; they are both "up". Which is nearer the top? Duh... what?
Imagine the literary masterpieces you could produce with that.

Honestly not a great book but it’s hilarious that the beloved liberal character from the #1 White guilt book of all time changes his mind.
While on the subject of books I think the Water is Wide is actually a subtle but genius criticism of liberalism. It seemingly appeals to liberals but I think the author is actually trying to warn us about the perils of naivety.

Their languages also retain the traces of the KhoiSan languages, including the click consonants. There are actually several different click sounds. The White missionaries who invented their written languages represented these respectively by the letters Q, X and C, which were redundant in their scheme for their normal usages (e.g. "KW" serves as 'Q').
The irony in all this is they did it to cater to the marxists, but the marxists were not interested. So basically everyone hates them for this and they should have left well enough alone.
We read it too.
IIRC the young daughter was also impregnated, so that the situation was that both the wife and daughter were pregnant at the same time.
The part that really stuck in my memory was the same book also had the White daughter of a wealthy family, an early SJW ‘progressive’/’liberal’ sort, attempting to help a Black character. The Black character loses control over his emotions and winds up murdering the White girl, somehow unintentionally as the book attempts to present it. To get rid of the evidence he then disposes of her body by burning it in an incinerator.
The latter seems to be an example of an unconscious death wish a lot of these SJW’s have, or, at best, naivety. That’s bad enough for an individual, but they want to make it murder/suicide by their taking everyone else down with them.
Ok, I admit it- I saw the cover of the Frankennigga book and started laughing maniacally. The unintended humor of it was really special. The local Barnes & Noble bookstore, which was also a popular hangout? Same.
Books? Sheeeeeit.
BTW, on a related note to blacks and books: yesterday I read a hilarious story on Modern Heretic about the University of Montana facing severe criticism for awarding a white student as the winner of its Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest.
The shitlib and blactivists were saying: “If you tried to get more POC in Montana universities, this wouldn’t be a problem. Montana is incredibly hostile to non-whites…”
But the reality was: not a single black person bothered to write the essay. It was all cucky whites who even bothered to enter the essay contest.
Dontrell and Tyrone couldn’t be bothered, apparently.
Imagine my/our shock.
Clown world cannot burn soon enough.
This pathetic attempt by Barnes and Noble illustrates how ignorant white liberals truly consider blacks to be.
Blacks gladly accept white liberal pandering to them when it comes with free rewards. For example, blacks not only accept but feel entitled to affirmative action when it comes to education because it comes with bonus of “intelligence” magically bestowed upon them. Likewise, affirmative action when it comes to getting hired into elite positions (even if the positions are not substantive) or elected to high office reward them with the aura of “prestige” and “power”.
When whites engage in pandering without gibs attached, blacks can notice. If the pandering is subtle (though not at all subtle to readers of this site)–like in TV advertisements depicting wise black characters living in upper middle class homes with intact families that like to go on camping trips–blacks don’t care. The poorest blacks idolize black entertainers and athletes who make decadent displays of their wealth, so why would they care about blacks depicted as rocket scientists on TV and the movies? They want to believe Wakanda is real, after all.
However, when the pandering doesn’t have tangible rewards attached and is really blatant, as in Barnes and Noble’s “blackwashing” of classic literature covers, blacks will (rightfully) get upset by it. Even they will realize that something is off when tales that take place in Europe in the Middle Ages are suddenly filled with all black casts or when Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz is taken away from her family of black Kansas farmers and dropped into a magical kingdom and given a pair of magical red Jordans to wear.
(At the same time, the play “Hamilton” is basically doing the equivalent of what B&N did, but since it was created by a nominally black man and used black performers, it is completely OK.)
“What they really need is Western classics done in Ebonics.”
Or Ebonics comic book versions of Cliff’s Notes.
Or Ebonics comic book versions of Cliff’s Notes. What's even funnier is the realization that, even with these changes, blacks STILL wouldn't read them. Honk, honk...welcome to clown world.

Fascinating. Thanks.
Agree. White SJWs, especially those who feel a life’s calling to help minorities/ethnic groups, are at best, naive, but mainly just mentally ill.

You laugh, but I swear I will not be one bit surprised if someone does remake Sawyer as you suggest.
I would buy that the incest scenes in Maya Angelou’s “novels” really happened. The latest studies I saw suggested that 75% of black children under age 18 have been raped or molested by at least one family member or close friend—and I don’t think I need to educate any regular reader of Unz about the black man’s propensity to muh dikk his way through life—or his female counterpart’s willingness to abuse any and all children left in her care, up to and including death.
The rest of it, I took to be the work of a very, um, colorful imagination.
Funny thing about Angelou: even my suburbanite relatives who’ve never stepped foot NEAR a numinous negro, and have believed in paintjob theory their entire lives, confess they are not able to tolerate Angelou’s dreck-that-passes-for-prose. Mind you, these are people who BRAG about their love of Miles Davis—the very same Miles Davis who said things like “If somebody told me I only had one hour to live, I’d spend it choking a white man”—to help burnish their “I loves the people of colors” credentials. That’s VERY, very revealing, IMO.
Those are not fun or interesting books to read. They do not inspire the reader's imagination. The average reader has no desire to ever pick up those books again after reading them once. While they might end with a slight message of hope, that message is meant for black readers only. Otherwise, non-black readers are intended to grapple with shame and guilt after reading them.
I actually didn't mind these black novels in high school and college. Compared to other "classics", they were quick and easy reads, and it was easy to write essays about them because their messages were so simple ("white people evil", "black people oppressed, heroic, and brave"). If you didn't want to grapple with the complexity of a Shakespeare play, or god forbid, a James Joyce novel, it was nice to whip off a paper on a black novel with the simple underlying theme of "it was a struggle growing up because of racism and my mom's boyfriend raping me".Replies: @Gunga Din, @kikz, @Priss Factor, @sasu
Agreed Morrisn and Angelou, but I wouldn’t put Hurston in their company.A lot of Black people don’t like to claim her either because she had a strong libertarian bent.

A lot of folks here are pointing out the obvious in saying blacks are not ‘readers’ by any stretch of the imagination but I had the same feeling when the whole black comic book thing began.
As far as I knew, black don’t read comic books so who exactly was ‘black panther’ done for? But seeing the surge of negros invading movie theaters in the wake of that…entire black class trips to see what they now consider ‘African history’ was an eye opener for me.
These books would be for the liberal whites, the SJW-types and other virtue signalers to show the length and breadth of their own depravity in debasing themselves to better the negro.
Maybe next they’ll cajole some French restaurants into adding ‘weenies and beenies’, fried chicken and ‘grape drank’ to the menu so they too can include the negro and elevate their status.
Let it burn…

A friend & I recently watched the Dolomite movie on Netflix starring Eddie Murphy about how those movies came about. I had seen the originals when I still lived in whiteopia, and had no real personal experience with TNB. One line Eddie says while talking to a screen writer who he is trying to get to write his movie is “Black people want to see car chases, titties, kung fu, and action”, all with YT being the protagonist. It’s as true back then as it is today.

George Orwell, in Nineteen Eighty Four, pointed out that, if you restrict the language, you restrict the thoughts that are possible. Sub-Saharan Africans had no written language before the White men came and invented one for them.
A Zulu could climb a tree, but he couldn’t tell you how high. There is only “up” or “down”. Two birds in a tree; Which is higher? Uh-uh; they are both “up”. Which is nearer the top? Duh… what?
Imagine the literary masterpieces you could produce with that.
BTW, it denotes the African Bushman/Khoisan "click consonant"...now culturally "appropriate" that one, and let's see you "appropriate" that "click speech," BLM folks! Bwahahahahahahahahahah! (Note: Watch the "Gods Must Be Crazy" movies first so you know what I mean by "click speech")Replies: @AnalogMan
As the Babuntus migrated southward down the east coast of Africa, they exterminated the KhoiSan in that area. They kept the women for themselves, with the result that the tribes that the White settlers encountered there, namely the Zulu and the Xhosa, are a hybrid, being smaller and lighter in colour than the pure Babuntu.
Their languages also retain the traces of the KhoiSan languages, including the click consonants. There are actually several different click sounds. The White missionaries who invented their written languages represented these respectively by the letters Q, X and C, which were redundant in their scheme for their normal usages (e.g. “KW” serves as ‘Q’).

You forgot Dostoevsky’s “The Idiot.”
Go Set A Watchman was not about Atticus changing his mind. The manuscript was written in 1957 and set in that time. The publisher turned it down, but noted that at one point, Atticus says to Scout “Don’t forget how in the thirties, I got that colored boy acquitted of rape.” So it was rewritten set in the thirties focusing on that trial, with a nicer Atticus.
Go Set A Watchman did not have Atticus the Adaptational Jerkass. To Kill A Mockingbird featured the Adaptational Nice Guy.
“Gats-B, why you chasing after dat ho?”

Just another example of eliminating whites in the name of diversity. Diversity means fewer whites. Diversity always means fewer whites.

Where was this?
I am about the same age and by fifth grade, the all-white elementary school in the all-White little rural southern town where my family lived had us reading textbooks full of Black Powah/Kill Whitey agitprop “poetry” by authors like Etheridge Knight and Amiri Baraka. This would have been around 1979, and a few minutes research tells me the books were various of the infamous 1970s Houghton-Mifflin “English Reader” series.
The PC miasma was so thick and cloying even kids noticed it, even then, in an era of blackboards and chalk, mimeographed worksheets printed in purple ink from a hand-cranked “ditto machine,” when “high-tech multimedia” meant “filmstrip” slideshows that came with a vinyl record in a sleeve, and no computers in the classroom or even in the principal’s office.
