Many classic novels were written before Africans wrote anything. Africans had no written languages.

It is only in the last 100 years or so that African blacks who came to Western countries culturally appropriated English and other Western languages to write in. Were any novels even written by blacks in any language before 1900?

I’m interested to see this long list of “classics” written by black authors that they say should be filling up the shelves during Black History Month. Do they mean those novels that center around hopeless misery, depravity, incestual rape, and of course systemic white racism written by that troika of Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, and Zora Neale Hurston that were hand-selected by academic elites long ago and have been burnt into the minds of every white and asian student in America under the age of 50 as the definitive examples of black literary genius?

Those are not fun or interesting books to read. They do not inspire the reader’s imagination. The average reader has no desire to ever pick up those books again after reading them once. While they might end with a slight message of hope, that message is meant for black readers only. Otherwise, non-black readers are intended to grapple with shame and guilt after reading them.

I actually didn’t mind these black novels in high school and college. Compared to other “classics”, they were quick and easy reads, and it was easy to write essays about them because their messages were so simple (“white people evil”, “black people oppressed, heroic, and brave”). If you didn’t want to grapple with the complexity of a Shakespeare play, or god forbid, a James Joyce novel, it was nice to whip off a paper on a black novel with the simple underlying theme of “it was a struggle growing up because of racism and my mom’s boyfriend raping me”.

I’m glad it got scrapped.

A 2008 poll of H.S. students asked them to name their top-10 America’s heroes (not including presidents). The top 3 were Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman. The national story is being replaced to a degree I would not have thought impossible.

For me, in college in the early 70s, my typical, liberal woke female english prof had us read black author Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man”. And, just like you said, one of the opening scenes is about a black father raping his young daughter while she was asleep in bed with he and his wife. The rest of the book was about a young black guy and his “life experiences” and being “marginalized”. Seriously, is this all blacks can write about? It’s the literary equivalent of that black “artist” who thought great art was to put a statue of Jesus in a vile of urine. Okay, I spent a couple of minutes looking at definitions of the verb “appropriate”; Merriam-Webster.com, for instance, has “to take exclusive possession of: annex (no one should appropriate a common benefit)”, and “to take or make use of without authority or right”.

I’m guessing from your context that you, along with others (leftists), probably mean something like the second definition. Are you saying that they shouldn’t be using English and other Western languages? Do languages have rightful owners?

“Cultural appropriation” is an erroneous concept no matter who uses it. I remember reading from Thomas Sowell something to the effect that people all over the world, throughout history, have adopted features of other cultures depending on what they considered to be most useful for their purposes. Sounds pretty normal to me.

Certain black people complain that whites “steal” their music, but they are still just as free to play jazz, for instance (that first definition quoted above doesn’t apply), and I think white people have done well in acknowledging blacks as the innovators of this and other popular music styles, so the credit hasn’t been stolen. And blacks dominate basketball, which to my knowledge, they didn’t invent; does anyone accuse them of stealing it?

Anyway, I’d just like to see the whole concept thrown out.

There are IIRC something like 500 different African languages that lack abstract concepts and have limited vocabularies. There is no written version for all or most.

IIRC the young daughter was also impregnated, so that the situation was that both the wife and daughter were pregnant at the same time.

The part that really stuck in my memory was the same book also had the White daughter of a wealthy family, an early SJW ‘progressive’/’liberal’ sort, attempting to help a Black character. The Black character loses control over his emotions and winds up murdering the White girl, somehow unintentionally as the book attempts to present it. To get rid of the evidence he then disposes of her body by burning it in an incinerator.

The latter seems to be an example of an unconscious death wish a lot of these SJW’s have, or, at best, naivety. That’s bad enough for an individual, but they want to make it murder/suicide by their taking everyone else down with them.

Ok, I admit it- I saw the cover of the Frankennigga book and started laughing maniacally. The unintended humor of it was really special. Blacks gladly accept white liberal pandering to them when it comes with free rewards. George Orwell, in Nineteen Eighty Four, pointed out that, if you restrict the language, you restrict the thoughts that are possible. Sub-Saharan Africans had no written language before the White men came and invented one for them.

If you have no written language, then the entire language consists of only the words that everybody knows. A dictionary is an absurdity. That restricts the total number of words in the language, and hence the number of concepts that it can express.

The White men who invented the written forms of the African languages also introduced words that had never existed before. Like, an entire system of numbers. Like abstract concepts. A Zulu could climb a tree, but he couldn’t tell you how high. There is only “up” or “down”. Two birds in a tree; Which is higher? Uh-uh; they are both “up”. Which is nearer the top? Duh… what?

Imagine the literary masterpieces you could produce with that.

As the Babuntus migrated southward down the east coast of Africa, they exterminated the KhoiSan in that area. They kept the women for themselves, with the result that the tribes that the White settlers encountered there, namely the Zulu and the Xhosa, are a hybrid, being smaller and lighter in colour than the pure Babuntu.

Their languages also retain the traces of the KhoiSan languages, including the click consonants. There are actually several different click sounds. Go Set A Watchman was not about Atticus changing his mind. The manuscript was written in 1957 and set in that time. The publisher turned it down, but noted that at one point, Atticus says to Scout “Don’t forget how in the thirties, I got that colored boy acquitted of rape.” So it was rewritten set in the thirties focusing on that trial, with a nicer Atticus.

I am about the same age and by fifth grade, the all-white elementary school in the all-White little rural southern town where my family lived had us reading textbooks full of Black Powah/Kill Whitey agitprop “poetry” by authors like Etheridge Knight and Amiri Baraka.
