Begs the question.  Are the coffee shops places to get good coffee, or places to socialize?  You can make your own coffee, but assembling a community is much more difficult.

Quality of life issues like cost of living, open space, quiet (esp. low crime) and fresh air figure here too.  If people can get more of those things for less money by moving outward and working by wire, the companies which maintain the city-based workforces are going to find it ever-harder to pull everyone downtown 5 days a week.  That means the coffee shops are not going to do very well.  This will start a spiral of closures of trendy places and even less reason to live in cities.  The people who like good coffee for itself will buy coffeemakers with their savings from not commuting.

I have neighbors, friends, co-worker types and acquaintances that, after the weather and obligatory “grass is coming along nicely” type comments, always bring up sports.

Yeah, something similar in my situation. I was tentatively planning to retire at year end. Working from home these last 2-3 months has given me good inkling of what retirement will look like – and I’m liking it. over the decades my parents have had 2 or 3 african techs come into the house to do cleaning operations. carpet cleaners one time, HVAC system cleaners the other time. the carpet cleaner guys could do an ok job as long as the main guy from headquarters was there supervising them.

the 2 HVAC guys came in to clean the vents by themselves, then when they left, we noticed they had screwed everything back in backwards. literally the same day, some guy from headquarters called, and asked how they did. i suspect they had messed up jobs before.

as far as i can tell, the only things they can do reasonably well is work on lawn crews, or work as low level computer technicians, if you’re talking about the smarter ones. i’ve seen a few who can handle those jobs. i’ve also seen a few mechanics, but i wouldn’t want them working on my vehicles or equipment.

The troops deployed in DC were DC National Guard and some National Guard troops from nearby states. I haven’t seen anything to indicate active or Marine Reserve units were in DC, nor were any US Army Ranger units there; however, members of the Utah Army National Guard’s 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) were sent to DC. I have also seen many pictures and videos of both police and soldiers expressing their sympathy with the rioters. Instead of stopping this chaos, they’re groveling and kneeling before them, hanging their heads in shame. It’s embarrassing.

Yes, there are numerous military bases in the greater DC area, but these have very few combat troops and are mainly HQ and admin units. Fort Myer has a single infantry battalion that specializes in ceremonial functions (parades, burials at nearby Arlington Cemetery, etc.) and would be of only limited use in this situation.

Very possibly one reason the units were withdrawn from DC was to ensure they didn’t flip to the other side and turn their weapons around. This happened before and could happen again. Look up what happened during the first big labor strike, which took place on a railroad, in the 1870s. The state militia troops (the equivalent of the Guard back then) joined in with the strikers and the violence went off the charts.

It happened before, and it could happen again.

Before the Spanish-Ameican War there was very little federal involvement with militia units in peacetime, and they had to be totally reorganized for wars such as the Civil War. Federal command is not an absolute guarantee against mutiny, but I don’t think you’ll see National Guard Special Forces (which should at least be Reserve if theyre going to continue to exist as reserve component units) doing the macarena, on duty and in unifom, with protesters, not to mention, god forbid, turning their weapons the other way. What happens in 25 to 50 years may be another story entirely.

From the early 1960s until the end of the Cold War, the Army Reserve had the 11th and 12th SFGAs and the Army National Guard had the 19th and 20th. During the post-Cold War drawdown, the Guard and the Reserve underwent some restructuring that resulting in the inactivation of most remaining combat arms units in the Reserve (most were already in the Guard), and the Reserve focused on combat support and combat service support units. This resulted in the inactivation of the both the 11th and 12th Groups in 1994.

As for troops, sympathetic to BLM and Antifa, turning their weapons around, in addition to the massive and violent railroad strike in the 1870s, during the Vietnam War there was a huge problem with “fragging” of NCOs and officers by their own troops. The military never really wanted to admit it was a problem and officially deaths were often attributed to enemy action while the military actually knew better. Looking back on it now, I suspect many of the killings were by black troops on white NCOs and officers — something else the military preferred not to confront. It’s like that saying: “Don’t ask the question if you can’t stand the answer.”

There is a way to get around this problem. Ask the other side questions and let them blabber away. You just nod your head as a good listener.
