Just because an African was born in Scandinavia, doesn’t make them Scandinavian. No matter how much show runners and writers of “historical” movies and streaming programs believe history can be rewritten as a Marvel comic or Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot, history remains unchanged.
The Vikings were white and there was no black Viking warrior queen, unlike the current year demanding such a fictional character.
There can be Africans in Sweden or Africans in Norway (just as there can be Africans in America), but morals and ethics of the current year do not change what was once, no matter how fashionable a butt-kicking black Viking female leader might be in 2022. Vikings: Valhalla, the spin-off to Amazon Prime’s and History’s Vikings is streaming on Netflix now. The sequel is set in the 11th century, approximately 100 years after the original series concluded, and follows a whole new set of famous Vikings and male, and female, rulers.
Danish-Swedish singer Caroline Henderson makes her debut acting role in the series as Jarl Haakon, the leader of Kattegat—but was the black Viking leader based on a real person?
Henderson spoke to Newsweek about the inspiration behind her character.
Was the Black Viking Leader Jarl Haakon Based on a Real Person?In Vikings: Valhalla, Caroline Henderson stars as Jaral Haakon, a female warrior, and respected leader.
History buffs may assume Jarl Haakon is based on the real historical figure also known as Haakon Sigurdsson, but this is not the whole story.
Vikings: Valhalla showrunner, Jeb Stuart simply created a female, powerful mentor figure for Freydis (Frida Gustavsson) whilst Harald (Leo Suter) and Leif (Sam Corlett) were in London.
To begin with, the real Haakon Sigurdsson is a white man, whereas Vikings: Valhalla’s Haakon is a black woman.
The real Haakon Sigurdsson was a powerful earl and pagan leader, who became the de facto ruler of Norway from 975 to 995, and coined the name Hakon the Powerful. However, in Vikings: Valhalla, Haakon is the ruler of the fictional land of Kattegat.
Speaking to Newsweek, Henderson explained her character was inspired by both male and female characters from the Viking era.
She shared: “Haakon is fictional, purely fictional. So it’s not like a male character, it’s a fictional character but of course, she’s inspired and based on both male and female characters, and I think the writers did a wonderful job of sort of putting something together that could have been a historical character.”
Henderson also pointed to the historical setting in which her character Haakon rules. In the 11th century, the Vikings were continuing their raids on England and across Europe. There was also great tension between the traditional pagan Vikings and the new, Christian Vikings.
Henderson said: “She is the ruler of Kattegat and she is also into paganism and she’s very headstrong and her beliefs. She rules through a very difficult time in history because Viking time paganism is going down, Christianity is coming up.
ORDER IT NOW“People want to conquer more land, so it’s a difficult time for her but she’s trying to rule with tolerance and openness, which is quite difficult, and is historically correct in that sense because that was a very challenging time in history. A little bit maybe relatable to what’s happening in 2022.”
As one of the very few black characters in the show, fans of Vikings: Valhalla may also be interested to know Black Vikings really did exist in Scandinavia as a result of their own travels or unfortunately, as slaves.
Henderson shared how the geographic span of the Viking world shaped her character Haakon: “I’m Scandinavian. I’m born in Stockholm, like Frieda [Gustavsson, co-star] and I think that’s part of our history. I mean, my mother was obsessed with Vikings. She told me a lot about sort of the female material line of women, fierce women.
“We learned in school, I read everything about it. I knew kind of how much they traveled, how much they raided but how much knowledge they came back with from Asia, America, Africa, Russia, etc, etc.
“So for me, it was even more sort of thrilling to dig into this, what I love, and kind of piece my character together. It was amazing because somebody like that could actually have existed. I don’t know. But it’s exciting.”
A black Viking female warrior did not exist, nor could have actually existed. Only in a mind poisoned by modernity could such a hilariously incorrect exaggeration of historical fan fiction/racial cosplaying exist.
Tolerance and openness are tools of oppression and persecution against those willing to believe the individuals wielding power in such a society have honesty and unity in mind.

There were no negroes in Norway (look it up, see if you can find any) until about 150K Somalian “refugees” in the 21st century, much less in 1002 AD (Saint Brice day massacre).
Similarly, contrary to movies/series like Barbarians there were no negroes in the Roman army, especially officers in 12AD. It was only in the 3rd century AD when Roman civilization was on the decline that they had some African negro soldiers who were not Roman citizens.
All these movies with historical settings just have to insert negroes where they don’t belong.

All of this reminds me of a news report I once read where a black “educator” was going around to predominantly black schools and “teaching” the Orclets that Hannibal of Carthage was a black man. I strongly doubt there were any blacks even serving as soldiers or slaves in the Roman army. I’m aware of only one Roman attempt at moving into Sub-Saharan Africa and I’m pretty sure they turned back. There were Ethiopians who occasionally made it to Rome and the provinces, but they were rare. There was very little contact with Sub-Saharan Africa until after the Roman Era, and then, mostly through the Arabs

If they try to remake The Wild Bunch, I’ll personally ride the atom bomb out of the airplane as it heads for Hollywood. That is an untouchable classic masterpiece of movie making.
Anyone old enough might remember the tv show MASH had ex-NFL player Tim Brown play Spearchucker Jones (Yep!), a surgeon in the Army and roommate to Hawkeye and Trapper.

In Finland, Field Marshal Mannerheim is the equivalent of George Washington, Churchill, Reagan, Patton, and John Wayne, rolled into one. The only man who was decorated by both sides in both WW1 and WW2, Mannerheim fought heroically in 5 or 6 wars, and in WW2 kept his small country from the clutches and interference of the Commies, Nazis, and Allies. A true larger than life figure, he is revered by Finns to this day.

Whats funny is that many of the blacks I worked with in the Caribbean from various islands around it, grew up surrounded with access to beaches and rivers in their home countries, and many told me they couldn’t swim. This goes for a lot of the Caribbean islanders like Jamaican, Haitians, St Lucians I worked with in S. Florida and even Connecticut. Many of them said they have tried swimming and they just sink. Most don’t really go out past their waist at the beach, but I have also met a decent amount from the islands that are decent swimmers/scuba divers. If I had to put a percentage on it, I’d say it’s about 65% can’t, 35% can. I know it’s a big issue when it comes to pool training in the military as well.

I have watched about half of the new Viking series and it is complete garbage! As I said above, it seems like it was scripted by some sort of diversity consultant. To shine some light on political activity involving Netflix, suffice it to say, that the wife of Reed Hastings, the founder of Netflix, has donated millions of dollars to a political action committee, that supports Los Angeles District Attorney, George Gascon. Who is George Gascon? He is the man that allows thieves, rapists and murderers free reign to terrorize the residents of Los Angeles County, where millions of people live. He is the guy that allows one to steal up to 900 dollars of other people’s things, including those of small business people AND not be prosecuted. Mind you, this means that they can this, every day. So, Netflix money, doesn’t just go to producing “movies”. The series did provide a brief backstory to explain her presence. Her Viking grandfather met her grandmother in Egypt and brought her back to Norway.

The previous Vikings series never really recovered from the departure of Travis Fimmel/Ragnar, despite a solid cast of actors. During World War II the US military was segregated, so if someone saw black GIs it meant it was an entire black unit, not just some blacks in a mostly white unit. Probably looked like the city had just been invaded by the Congo.
They were mostly support units. Black combat units were fairly rare. There were some, but tiny when compared to the size and number of white units.

So true – they never go to actual African history or culture, myths, etc. One of the best TV shows I’ve ever seen was Shaka Zulu in the 70s, about that African king/conqueror.
