Some Chicago communities are monitored by an acoustic-based gunshot detection system that pinpoints the location of gunfire.
This technology — used by the Chicago Police Department — is known as ShotSpotter. It alerts law enforcement to potential gunfire and claims to reduce gun violence in communities.
According to ShotSpotter CEO Ralph Clark, the technology is able to tell the difference between gunfire and fireworks.
“We do that through combining software with a network of sensors that have the ability to understand a loud popper boom noise,” Clark said. “After we’ve identified the specific location of that particular event, we go through some steps to filter out those incidents that aren’t gunshots, leaving the ones that are gunshots to be published typically within 30-45 seconds of the trigger pull. What makes the technology so compelling is that we know from our work, and what’s been independently studied and analyzed by folks, is that 80-90% of outdoor criminal gunfire goes unreported effectively. Traditional 911 is broken for those communities that are suffering from ongoing persistent gun violence.”
The system also involves a trained acoustic gun expert listening in real time. The company claims it has about a 97% accuracy rate.
“The technology does a really good job of identifying the location of loud pops, booms and bangs,” Clark said. “It then goes through an extra step of filtering out those pops, booms and bangs that it has 100% confidence is not gunfire. We then leave everything else to go into our incident review center, where we have trained acoustic experts that listen to and look at these events in real time. It’s important to note that these individuals have tools specifically to be able to replay the recorded incident and be able to look at sensor participation, the graphic of the waveform of the sensors listening to multiple sensors outdoors. They’re effectively a virtual witness to an incident of gunfire. … They have the ability to listen to multiple sensors’ worth. That review process can take anywhere from 30 to 45 seconds, and what that leaves is vetted alerts that then get published to a subscribing agency.”
Critics, meanwhile, argue the technology does little to curb crime, costs too much and leads to excessive police responses in Black and Latino communities.
In 2021, Chicago’s Office of Inspector General found that fewer than one in 10 ShotSpotter alerts between 2020 and 2021 resulted in evidence of a gun-related criminal offense being found.
Clark said the report doesn’t address the technical efficacy of ShotSpotter — it’s posing a question around operational value.
ORDER IT NOW“Although 10% might sound small, you have to look at the nominal number of what’s in that 10%,” Clark said. “We know from looking at the same data that the OIG Report produced, ShotSpotter led to 1,100 gunshot-wound victims coded by the data that OIG looked at. Eight hundred of those 1,100 gunshot-wound victims did not have a corresponding 911 call. It means that ShotSpotter was the means by which first responders got to those folks that were potentially bleeding out and potentially saving a percent of those lives.”
Some community members criticize the use of ShotSpotter technology, claiming it’s ineffective, as reported by the OIG, and contributes to overpolicing in Black and brown communities.
“I haven’t seen any evidence of that,” Clark responded. “I’ve heard people say that, but I haven’t seen evidence of that taking place. What I see a lot more evidence of is ShotSpotter getting police to gunshot-wound victims.”
So if ShotSpotter technology correctly identifies gunshots as happening in communities devoid of white people and with a surplus of non-whites (black and brown people, who produce black and brown individuals collectively committing nearly all the gun violence), it’s a bad thing police departments spend more resources trying to make these communities safer.

A sane society would want a policeman to show up every time a gun is discharged in an *urban* area, regardless of the reason: murder, accidental discharge, shooting at cans, whatever. Gunshots are lethal and urban areas are crowded. I can’t think of a good reason for a cop not to at least make sure nothing is wrong when a gun is fired *in the city*.

So there you have it: this system enables EMS to reach gunshot victims sooner, since a big majority of shooting incidents it identifies do not otherwise result in a 911 call.
Let’s think about this for a minute: who are these shooting victims? — the answer is clear: generally they are the same as the perpetrators, meaning young black (or Hispanic) male ghetto trash and gangbangers.
So the largest effect of this system is probably to get the wounded to the hospital sooner (no doubt a public hospital), so they can be patched up at taxpayer expense, and then sent back out onto the street to continue their lives of crime (assuming they aren’t wanted or charged themselves).

I live in a town that is 99.8% white. It has three gun clubs and plenty of deer. I can hear gunfire on a daily basis. Nobody calls 911. Everybody knows what it is and where it is coming from. There is zero crime aside from an occasional DUI. Everybody has guns. The cops do not have Shot Spotter and there is no need for it.
It would be interesting to know how many people think about the logical consequences involved in these stories. The solution to “urban” problems is not more police; the solution is to stop pretending Western civilization is transferrable to people who have no concept of it.

Going through Scott’s history with marijuana use, his history of not attending school, and not taking medication relating to various depression and anxiety diagnoses, Judge Dorsey said Scott is “living an adult lifestyle.”

With all of the huffing on social media about the Tyre Nichols beating and the need to abolish the police, I have suggested why not try it? There are enough cities in America that blacks and/or extreme progressives control politically to make this move if they want. Show everyone else that a different way is possible, and absent the racist institution of government-enforced public order, POCs will produce peaceful communities in which everyone lives up to their potential.
Deep down, I do think a majority of blacks and their political sponsors know that if whites took their bat and ball and went home, their town will end up a total wreck in relatively short order. They try tinkering at the margins, like with public schools and the effect is to drive away a lot of middle class parents who do not want to subject their kids to public school but cannot afford private. Ironically this is an effective way to increase progressive political power and indulge in their worst instincts because the whites that are left are upper middle class who are more likely to align themselves with progressives (while buying their way out of the consequences) and the somewhat less well off who leave are more conservative in disposition and would have been a moderating force.

There are thousands upon thousands of small white towns just like mine across New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. Thousands.
Unfortunately most of these state governments are controlled by Negroes, Jews and liberal communist women in urban centers like Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago teeming with nonwhites. I live in a very good, very white, very safe, very segregated small town in a politically terrible state.
This is similar to the commonality of everyone having a cellphone these days as well, otherwise the homicide rates in cities like Chicago/Baltimore would probably be triple. Being able to instantly call 911, instead of having to find a working payphone or landline saves precious minutes, minutes that would have led to these hoodrats bleeding out and expiring in the gutter 25 years ago.

It can also distinguish between multiple shooters and calibers. They can see the general direction of the shot so the data can be used in a court case. What they will do is pair it with cell phone data to show that the perp was in that spot when the shots were fired. Of course most of the time it is just used to collect victims.
There was actually a big shootout in the middle of the day in Chicago and only shotspotter called it in. Right next to all kinds of apartment buildings.

The 2.5 billion figure for Chicago is not surprising.
A couple of years ago, I did a search on annual expenses incurred for shooting victims in the U.S. , and the figures varied wildly. Johns Hopkins reported 4 billion while other sources ranged to as high as 30 billion.
All things considered, I’d tend to lean towards the latter figure.

Surprisingly there is a good French-made (racist?) movie on Amazon Prime. There are uncountable “shots fired” – lots of gunfire.
It is “15 Minutes Of War” (2019)
featuring Olya Kurylenko (Bond Girl in Quantum Of Solace), the other actors are French.
The movie is based on true events not disclosed for 40 years (would have been after Captain Philips movie with Tom Hanks in 2013, with the same synchronized sniping by Navy Seals to deal with Somali negro pirates.)
In 1976 in the last French colony in Africa, Somali negroes jack a bus of white French school children and hold them hostage because they want France to return land to Somalia.
An elite French sniper team takes the kidnappers out with synchronized sniping (like in Captain Philips) and then engages in a firefight with many Somali negro soldiers.
Never have I seen so many negroes shot in a movie except maybe in the old Zulu movies wherein the British win but those don’t seem to be available any more (bc racist?).

I would suspect that a sane society would certainly approve of the lack of police action where no humans are involved or endangered.
I have a question perhaps someone here could answer:
Does the ShotSpotter system detect the sounds of gun discharges when silencers are attached to them?
If the answer to my question is “no” or even a “not usually” – and if it also turns that some jurisdiction has decided to install a new ShotSpotter system – then I would just recommend use of a silencer to anyone in said jurisdiction who just wants to do some safe and legal target shooting on their own property – but only if this is also legally possible, of course.
I also already know that silencers have their limitations, and that they will not work with each and every type of firearm out there.

I was charged $1800 to get 10 stitches in my finger 10 years ago. This was for a cut that was maybe 1 inch in length, a shot of lidocaine, and a prescription for antibiotics.
The ER costs of emergency surgery to remove a bullet, let alone multiple ones, plus testing, hospital stay, etc has to easily be over $100k per case. If any posters on this site know or can give a ballpark average, please do, because I’m sure the real “Hidden Figures” costs for treating these hoodrats is much higher than the hospitals/government is willing to admit.

I had a buddy whose national guard unit was called up and deployed for peace keeping duty in Haiti. Shortly after arriving, they were patrolling a village in there zone and saw a dead body of an obviously murdered man laying on the side of the road, near hovels, street vendor’s etc. Apparently people just walked on by, no one claimed the body, no one investigated it, no one removed the body. The next day they returned, and the body was still there getting very ripe. His unit went beyond there orders and tried to investigate it, all they discovered was the man’s family. They told the family to remove and bury the body and the family refused. They actually had to order the family at gun point to take care of it. FYI his unit traded in there M-16’s for the much older and heavier M1 rifles. Why you ask? They used the heavy stocks of M1’s as persuaders, apparently their quite effective in that role.
