Without a black population, would New Orleans still be known as the murder capital of the USA? [Among young Black men in New Orleans, murder exacts a devastating toll: At current rates, 1 in 14 will be slain before they reach 35, NOLA.com, February 3, 2023]:
Two young men lay flat on the pavement, faces up, feet pointed at the other, motionless.
A wild shootout had just ended at noon on a Sunday outside the courtyard of an apartment complex on Chef Menteur Highway in New Orleans East, with no victor.
Justin Ganier was lined up in a parking stall, sneakers propped against a yellow curb, dead at age 23. Robert Moody, 25, wasn’t far behind, shot 17 times and bleeding through his clothes in a scene posted to Instagram.
The sudden, violent deaths of two young Black men settled a dispute that began the previous evening and escalated that morning — an eruption over baked treats, witnesses told police. Moody lived there with his girlfriend, who had invited a friend, Ganier and the couple’s young boy to stay.
“They cooked my son’s cinnamon rolls,” said Moody’s mother, Christy Dorsey, recalling a homicide detective’s account. “My son went off about the cinnamon rolls. ‘Why you cookin’ my stuff?’ So my son cooked the girl’s cookies. The cookies got burnt. So the girl told my son, ‘You must can’t read.’ ”
Moody had a stutter, and that kind of wisecrack would get to him, said his stepfather, Eddie Tillman. Witnesses told police he threatened to kill the woman. Moody and his girlfriend left for Walmart. “The girlfriend said she tried to defuse it,” Tillman said.
When they returned from the store, Ganier, who had been at work, was there with his mother, packing up. The two men traded words before the gunfight.
One witness described it as “like ‘The Matrix,’ ” as both men fired from feet away while rolling on the ground. Police deemed Moody the perpetrator and first to fire, counted it as one murder and cleared two homicides as solved.
To Tillman, the deadly shootout a year ago seemed to epitomize a familiar escalation among armed young Black men in New Orleans, a deadly game of chicken that he said he urged his stepson to avoid by stashing his gun.
“It’s like you won’t back down,” he said. “You got two people carrying guns for protection, so you’re not scared to use it. So he knows he’s strapped, and he knows he’s strapped. It’s a thing of, ‘You gonna use it or not?’ ”Murder capital
In the nation’s most murderous city, young Black males are getting killed at rates reserved in most other places for diseases affecting the elderly.
Close to half of New Orleans’ 265 murder victims last year were Black males ages 15 to 34, police data shows. Over the past three years, 1% of that cohort was murdered in the city. At that rate, 1 in 14 Black youths in New Orleans will be slain before they reach 35.

It was higher than the rate at which local seniors die from strokes, the third leading cause of death for New Orleanians 65 and over, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows.
New Orleans police data on murder suspects suggests that a similar, slightly younger cohort of Black males is doing the bulk of the killing.
The grim numbers add up to what many view as a ballooning public health crisis, a contagion of deadly violence that has gripped New Orleans over three straight years, with an outsized toll on young Black males.
Nearly all young Black males who are murdered in New Orleans were shot, and the frequency of shootings in that population is increasing sharply, state trauma data shows.
At current rates, Black males who live in New Orleans from ages 15 to 24 have about a 1 in 8 chance of showing up shot at University Medical Center over that perilous decade of life.
Social media, where threats and violence are broadcast in an instant, has “compressed the feedback loop” for violence among youths, Francois said.
“It’s developing into a belief that, ‘This is an acceptable thing in my community, in the people I identify with. This is an acceptable way of dealing with challenging stuff in my life or when I feel like I might be challenged,’ ” she said.
Had the American Colonization Society been successful in their intent, would this hypothetical African-free New Orleans have more than five murders per 100,000 people?

Fun fact: New Orleans was more than 70% White from 1850 to 1930–in 1860 it was listed at 85% White. It stayed well above 60% White until 1960 and was still 54.5% White in 1970. Much, if not most, “culture” of New Orleans was developed by Whites.

I’ve been a landlord in a certain ‘Chocolate City’ for 20+years. The things I have seen could fill an encyclopedia. I have lost almost all of my black friends just describing what I see.
I was standing on Bourbon Street several years ago watching a parade of black youths struttin down the street when one of them walked past me and shouted “get back on that sidewalk white boy”. He then pulled up his shirt to reveal a semi-auto handgun stuck in his belt. Obviously, I complied and got the hell out of there. I have never been nor will I ever go back to that toilet again.

Being raised in New Orleans (& having my truck stolen there in ‘94, when NOLA led the nation in homicide rate), I study crime stats there closely. It’s part of why I now live an hour away, though I mainly work there. After heavily crunching the murder numbers a few years ago, factoring in demographic ratios (60% black, 30% white, 10% other), of course, I learned that blacks commit 97% of NOLA’s homicides on average over that decade I studied. And this city is notorious for underreporting crime, because they don’t want to scare away tourists, which are the city’s #1 industry. I suspect many bodies are found on the sides of highways, under bridges, or out in the swamps, and kept hushed-up. (Cue “If only you knew how bad things really are…” memes.) What happened in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (look up the rate that befell many babies in the restrooms of the Superdome & Convention Center, which were used as shelters) only solidified in non-liberal white locals’ minds that the jig was up & distance would be the only antidote.
As for the 3% of victims who were not killed by blacks, it seems 0-1% of them are killed by whites in any given year, with the rest of course done by stray Latinos, MENAs, & an occasional Asian. Countless black power murals, renamed streets, removal of Confederate statues, etc. seem to have had no impact on the melanistic crime rate, for some unknown reason. Since the Racial Wreckoning, the cops have been essentially AWOL on the streets, and all crimes have consequently skyrocketed. The glitzy downtown hotspots are often eerily unattended at night, as tourists & locals alike have figured out that daytime partying is now the smartest bet. The recent installation of a new head of police, a black woman of course, has actually backfired.
By the way, a local crime-oriented Twitter account run by an ex-CIA guy (@Crimealytics) has essentially stopped posting crime-related stats & stories, preferring humorous local sports observations. His pinned tweet is about crime allegedly being DOWN nationwide… (Chicago has a better crime account, @w_h_thompson, a.k.a. HeyJackass.)
Humorous anecdote time: I’ll never forget the time in 2005 I showed up to a temp job moving stuff in a warehouse, seeing that my two co-workers would be young brothas. One was sporting (yes, on his very first day at work) a baggy black tee with a big red Stop sign & “STOP SNITCHIN’” on it. I completed more work than both of them combined (and they soon failed to even show up), & the owner quickly hired me to work at another branch of his company. The most amazing thing I ever saw on the front page of the Times Picayune was a funeral spray shooting where some of the victims were wearing freshly made t-shirts with a photograph of the dead guy in the casket they were all honoring smiling with his AK-47. At the time I had never heard the term death-shirt. The new death-shirt was there in full color above the fold. I forget the exact body count but it was an impressive number for such events–seven or eight or so.

Box two: In spite of the above, he asks “What’s going on?” Really? Is he that stupid or is it self delusion?
Box three: The typical resistance by these simians – struggling, running, more struggling, then exclaiming, “I have a heart condition.” Ok, idiot, why then did you fight with the police and run? And what was the point? Was dying largely by your own actions, preferable to probable jail time?
Blacks need to get the hell out of this country where they can play out their primitive behavior and we can then exist without being blamed for said behavior.
I’m beyond the point of weariness as far as picking up the enormous costs of lawlessness, blood and monetary loss their presence generates.
Since Eric Garner/Freddy Grey/St. Floyd, they think claiming they can’t breathe/medical condition will get the cops to back off, after they’ve already been combative and resisting arrest. In their limited viewpoint they are trying to do anything to avoid going to jail, not realizing they’ll be transported to jail immediately after the Dr’s find nothing wrong with them. It truly highlights their lack of future time orientation and forward thinking.
They are hoping to gain an upper hand during the combat phase of the arrest process.
