In a society that vilifies whiteness, anything too white must immediately be deemed illegitimate.

Regardless of the good it does for humanity, if the endeavor is too white, it is axiomatically wrong.

[Citizen science volunteers are almost entirely white, The Conversation, June 22, 2022]:

Every day, volunteers around the world contribute to scientific studies through “citizen science.” Citizen science can be anything from counting migrating birds to measuring precipitation or even tracking outbreaks of COVID-19. Citizen science helps researchers collect more data than they could working on their own. The people who participate in these projects also benefit by gaining knowledge about the fields they are working in and learning skills.

We are two researcherswho study biology, the environment and the role of citizen science in these fields. In a new paper published on June 22, 2022, in BioScience, we used survey data from 2016 to 2019 to better understand the demographics of citizen scientists.

A few small studies have found that citizen science volunteers tend to be white, well-educated and have high incomes. But this homogeneity of participants is common knowledge among researchers, and few collect detailed demographic data on participants in citizen science.

In our survey, we collected data about race, income and other demographic information. Overall, we received 3,894 responses. Most of the responses – 3,191 – came from the 2016 Christmas Bird Count, the world’s longest-running bird-related citizen science project. Since 1900, thousands of people in the U.S. and abroad have counted birds around Christmas and reported the results to the Audubon Society.

We also collected data from 280 contributors to Candid Critters – a project that uses trail cameras to study wild mammals – and from 423 members of, an online inventory of citizen science projects.

Overall, 95% of respondents identified as white. The lack of racial diversity was striking for each sample, with 96% of participants in both the Christmas Bird count and Candid Critters identifying as white and 88% of respondents from SciStarter saying the same. While only 14% of the U.S. population has a graduate or professional degree, about half of our survey respondents held these degrees. Additionally, while only 6% of the U.S. population has careers in science, technology, engineering or math, almost half of our survey respondents from all three data sources worked in STEM fields.

Problems from a lack of diversity

Participating in citizen science is linked to personal benefits like learning new skills and building community. If citizen science is only reaching educated white science professionals, then it’s concentrating the benefits of participation among this group.

Additionally, if one of the goals of citizen science is to boost science literacy and trust in science, it can’t achieve that goal if it’s preaching to the choir by only reaching people who already work in science.

Finally, a lack of diversity in citizen science could even compromise the quality of the research. For instance, one study found that volunteer water monitors – who were mostly well-educated and white – undersampled areas where environmental concerns disproportionately affected poor communities of color.

Initiatives like Black Birders Week seek to increase the visibility and concerns of people of color interested in the outdoors and science. SciStarter, where one of us volunteers as the director of research collaborations, is undertaking a long-term effort to design inclusive citizen science programs. By partnering with community-based groups, schools, churches, companies and libraries, some recent SciStarter initiatives have engaged more than 40% nonwhite participants.

Reforming citizen science with inclusive and equitable practices would not only make the science better but also spread the benefits of these projects more equitably and eventually help bring more diverse perspectives into science generally.

In it’s present form, citizen science is almost exclusively white, because almost exclusively white individuals collectively represent the amateur scientists in their ranks.

Despite all these white people do to advance science and our knowledge of the world, the lack of non-whites means their work is null and void.

Whiteness would seem to be the strength, right?

How again is diversity our greatest strength, when in the absence of this mysterious, all-powerful force, so much is accomplished in citizen science due to whiteness?

As professors struggle to recruit postdocs, calls for structural change in academia intensify

This recent news article raises some interesting questions if you read carefully between the lines.

” … Those experiencing challenges (recruiting postdocs) span STEM fields, including biomedicine, chemistry, environmental science, anthropology, physics, and computer science. Many reported not only a drop in the total number of applications, but also in the quality of applications.

“For the first time I feel my type of job is less rewarding, more frustrating,” says Donna Zhang, a professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Arizona who is trying to hire multiple postdocs. “To find qualified people, it’s way more difficult than it used to [be]. … It’s very bad.” …”

What vanishing demographic group might be over-represented among the more qualified?

“… At the same time, she sees it as a positive development that Ph.D. graduates are “voting with their feet” and finding ways to contribute outside the Ivory Tower. …”

What demographic group is voting with their feet more than others?

  3. My guess is bogus liquor. Color me unsurprised.

South African authorities are investigating the deaths of at least 22 young people in a nightclub.

The victims were found strewn across floors and tables the Enyobeni Tavern in the coastal town of East London.

The bodies were taken to mortuaries, where post-mortem examinations – including toxicology tests – will seek to establish a cause of death.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his “deepest condolences” to families of the victims.

“This tragedy is made even more grave by its occurrence during Youth Month – a time during which we… advocate and advance opportunities for improved socio-economic conditions for the youth of our nation,” he said in a tweet.

Oscar Mabuyane, premier of East Cape Province where the tragedy happened, did not give possible reasons for the deaths, but condemned the “unlimited consumption of liquor”.

Speaking at the scene, he said: “You can’t just trade in the middle of society like this and think that young people are not going to experiment.”

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday. Those found dead were aged between 18 and 20.

A provincial safety official told AFP news agency that a stampede had been ruled out as the cause of death as there were “no visible wounds”.

“Forensic [investigators] will take samples and test to see if there was any poisoning of any sort,” Unathi Binqose said.

  4. When whites do good, the question is never “why don’t nonwhites also do good?” but “TOO MANY WHITES…”

Same with entire history of science, math, and technology.

Most of the great names in modern times were white.

Instead of asking, “Why didn’t non-whites do what whites do?”, it’s always “TOO MANY WHITES did stuff and took the credit.”

Whites are not only blamed for non-whites failing to achieve but for having achieved too much.

Yeah, well, you know, these people trust the science, and the science tells them that they have a better chance of remaining live citizen scientists if they don’t spend too much time sampling things in communities of color.

  8. The Chicago Art Museum had a dedicated group of volunteers who were all very knowledgeable about the works of art on display. Many had volunteered their time and money, most of them were very well off, for years at the museum. There were specialist in the group who knew more information about certain pieces than most people in the world. As a group they led thousands of school kids and patrons of the museum on tours. The board of directors decided to hire a black female to become museum director, things began to change. One of her first acts was to fire the volunteers who were all white and replace them with people of color and pay them up to \$20.00 an hour. No experience needed. They would be provided with “cheat sheets” to help them lead tours. The former volunteers were dismissed and sent packing. An unpaid group of dedicated, knowledgeable white volunteers were kicked out and replaced with mostly black, unprepared, paid employees. Makes sense, right?

  9. Wasn’t there a Black birdwatcher in Central Park who made the news not too long ago?

  10. xyzxy says:

These people are lunatics. If we only had more black birdwatchers the world would be a better place? What birdbrains.

This sort of thing underscores the decline of the university. You know it’s over when goofy thinking infects the ‘hard’ sciences. How anyone can take these people seriously is something I’ll never hope to understand.

Of course, I wouldn’t discount the notion that their academic ‘peers’ are secretly laughing. But they know that if they speak against this kind of idiotic ‘research’ they’ll have to face the woke mob. And who needs that? Let’s face it, a university gig is hard to come by, these days, so perhaps it’s better just to let Rome burn.

It’s a white woman and (evidently) a white man. You expect this sort of thing from a woman, but a white man? What’s in it for him? If he was serious about it, he’d immediately fire himself, and give his PhD slot to a underprivileged black, and then go work in an inner city high school, teaching prospective black scientists all they need to know. LOL

  11. usNthem says:

Sure, a study like this is a laughable joke (like black birders week – lol) but it really is getting to the point where my loathing for people like this, and the sludge they champion, knows no bounds. Seriously, why should anyone give a s*** who actually does the “citizen science” as long as it gets done – and by people who care about and enjoy what they’re doing?

Nothing is apparently beyond corrupting these days – joggers have got to be stuffed into everything regardless of desire or especially merit. Damnation – separation from the muds and their traitorous White enablers can’t come soon enough.

  12. @dixonsyder

They had volunteer docents until they decided to pay for no-sense! At least it doesn’t smack of racism when the new crowd take vacations during Black Hist’ry Mumph!

  13. @dixonsyder

I remember this story from the Steve Sailer blog, Mr. Snyder. Besides paying out money and getting a docent who docent know squat (typo intended), you make the art aficionados less comfortable. (Of course, admitting this would make them REALLY uncomfortable.)

Were I a connoisseur of art, I believe I would have quit going to that Chicago Museum. They can’t leave White people with ANYTHING.

  14. @dixonsyder

I hope that place burns for doing this.

  20. Jameson says:

I’ve had the misfortune of being at the Smithsonian in DC, and the Museum of Natural History in NYC when busloads of vibrant “teens” in summer “programs” (tax payer funded daycare) show up and start running amok thru the museums. They couldn’t give 2 shits about any of the displays, history, artifacts, or learning something. The only thing that they really paid any attention to were the gem displays and Hope Diamond at the Smithsonian, and that’s only because it is sparkly and ostentatious.

I am also always curious how much money the gift shops lose in both product and business on days when there are multiple field trips from these wasteful programs.

Citizen Science volunteers should get an A for diversity. After all, NBA and NFL get high marks for diversity when they are supermajority black.

This also raises some questions about Asians. They have scientific aptitude and are generally more educated than whites but are not volunteering to further the cause of science like these white citizen scientists are.

But if Asians were a majority of citizen scientists then that fact would be used to attack and impugn whites. Whites would be told that Asians are smarter and better than they are when it comes to science. Whites can’t win no matter what and a narrative is always crafted to attack and demonize us.

  42. White people shouldn’t be volunteering for anything, or giving money to charity. This includes blood and organ donation and giving money to your alma mater too.

Every dollar you give or every hour you volunteer is a dollar or an hour freed up for the government to spend on whatever Jewish/leftist social engineering project they’re currently engaged in.

I’d heard multiple professors return from New Orleans who’d volunteered after Hurricane Katrina publically stated they’d heard stories of horror in the from the Sportsball Dome. They’d heard of rapes, assaults, deaths, etc.

It didn’t take too long and the narrative changed course 180 degrees. These tales are said to be lies nowadays but I peronally heard the claims from white liberal mouths who deployed to serve as crisis counselors.
