Mayor Brandon Scott is spearheading this plan, aimed at tackling the city’s longstanding battle with crime and urban decay.
With more than 200 city-owned vacant properties up for grabs, residents willing to roll up their sleeves and restore these homes to their former glory are being offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Still, with nearly 15,000 abandoned properties blighting Baltimore’s landscape as of 2022, according to city records, the road to urban renewal remains long and arduous.
Baltimore boasts one of the highest crime rates in the United States. The probability of falling victim to either violent or property-related offenses in this city stands at 1 in 21. This crime rate surpasses that of communities across the spectrum, ranging from small towns to sprawling metropolises.
This $1 measure, greenlit by a city board last Wednesday, echoes the spirit of Baltimore’s historic “dollar house” program of the 1970s, which saw homesteaders revitalizing communities one house at a time.
Newark, New Jersey, has dabbled in a similar scheme, underscoring the urgency of innovative solutions to combat urban blight.
However, this time around, the focus is squarely on individual buyers who get to pay that $1 sum. For developers interested in scooping up a home, they need to pay $3,000.
To sweeten the deal, generous grants of $50,000 are on the table to assist with renovations, provided recipients secure pre-approval for construction loans, reports Governing.com.
Concerns linger, though, with some nonprofits urging the city to set safeguards against a wholesale buyout by developers, a move that could price out low-income residents and exacerbate gentrification pressures.
If Baltimore in 2024 had the racial breakdown the city did back in 1924… the property value of these houses would be beyond most single-family homes anywhere in America.

Better off to just bulldoze it all and let nature reclaim it. They’re always claiming they don’t have any green spaces or trees in the hood, here’s their chance.
Real estate developers purchase them for a trifle. Finance politicians who put the emphasis on restoring security. Cleanse the gangs. Rebuild. Make a killing from sales. God forbid any suspicion that gangs were allowed to thrive on purpose.

The $1 houses now are in terrible shape in terrible areas–the $1 houses in the past were in better areas where you might at least be able to fix them up without them being destroyed by the neighbors. What word starts with N and ends with R and nobody wants to live near them—NEIGHBORS !
What could possibly go wrong in fixing up such houses? The possibilities are literally limitless.

The city did the same thing late 70’s early 80’s under Schaefer. You could buy a piece of a building at Inner Harbor for $4000. You had to renovate into lofts. Gentrification. In 1980 the city was white during the day, and black at night.
If those buildings are 100 year old construction they are likely masterpieces of craftsmanship. No way to even replicate today with cheaper materials and shoddier workmanship.
Cleveland and Detroit, to name two cities, have been doing that for the past 30-some years. Along with that, those cities, and others like Buffalo, Rochester, etc. have plenty of homes for sale under $100K. Toledo, Ohio has block after block of nice old houses in diverse, vibrant neighborhoods, available for peanuts.
All these places, and many others, office real estate in a prime location. Hell, last week, I saw an ad for a vacant lot in Cleveland, where a house had been torn down. 9,000 sq ft. $29 grand. A mile east of downtown. You can build a very nice place on that lot for a reasonable amount, and have plenty of dough left over for private school for the kiddos. Or save even more by letting then get vibrant at the public schools.
All of the Milleniwipes and Grade Z/Gen Z White bitchbabies should be all over deals like that. It is in a majority negro neighborhood, but for enlightened suburban raised White youngsters who fapped through the 80s and 90s watching their black idols on TV should find that a feature, not a bug.
Those will be vacuumed up by Blackrock, State St and Vanguard in no time.
I lived in one of those houses in the 1980’s. They were all located in a historic district (fells point). Most became 2 or 3 apartments, with middle class white folks inhabiting them, which was better than just leaving them to rot.
But the current ones up for $1 are in rundown black neighborhoods. The building materials will just be stolen before the renovators even get to make use of them. Baltimore ain’t coming back from the dead this time.
I look at that mess and think “Mad Max 2024: San Francisco-Oakland.”

In 1961 my parents bought a home for their young and growing family in northern Virginia for $12,400. They’re both gone now and the house they owned for decades is going for $1.1 million. Built in 1948, almost certainly it’ll be flattened by a developer and replaced with yet another McMansion. I agree that real estate prices in the area are ridiculously high, but that’s only possible in an area of mostly whites. In Bodymore, Murderland, real estate has been made essentially worthless by the overwhelming presence of Africans.

I remember during the Michael Brown riots in St Louis reading a story about a White grandmother who purchased a home in a nice neighborhood in the 60s for somewhere around $40,000. The story mentioned the fact that it was now worth roughly $60,000 and she had hoped to sell it with some equity but the neighborhood since had “turned over” and the hands up don’t shoot movement threatened home values further.
That got me thinking, my god, her home value only went up $20k over 50 years! Living in and around blacks is not only dangerous but it’s also a financial disaster! Contrast your story of a similar home built and maintained in a White area with this poor woman’s house taken over by the invading dark cancer… nearly a million dollar difference. That’s something you’ll never hear from a financial advisor: stay far away from blacks if you value your investments!

Back in the 1990s some people suggested we look into Oakland to buy and flip to gay men who couldn’t afford San Francisco. We didn’t. I was involved in some rehabbing of old buildings in Baltimore–they were not masterpieces of craftsmanship–worked on one near the harbor that was built on a “foundation” of oyster shells–another that had a subfloor laying on dirt—hipsters would strip the plaster off the walls to get exposed brick and then wonder why they could smell the cigarette smoke from next door–the wall being only 1 brick thick—and the mortar turned to sand as trucks drove down the street—yeah those were masterpieces.
This, to me, is where the call for ‘reparations’ really falls apart. If you total up all the value lost in this country by blacks destroying property like this all over America, it would total into the BILLIONS. That on top of the billions spent on Great Society programs and welfare to try to raise them up to our level (which has failed miserably). Want reparations? You got it. That’s where the money went. SUCK ON THAT.

Used to live north of North Ave. near Whitelock Ave, a truly shitty area. The home I lived in was formerly part of a wonderful, all white neighborhood with hardwood floors (individually nailed in) and beautiful everything, done by the hands of craftsmen and skilled, proud builders. That area saw me going to sleep with gunshots as background noise. It couldn’t have been like that prior to white flight.
Those houses are too far gone to be restored. The entire neighborhoods they are in need to be demolished. This process of urban decay is a direct result of these cities becoming majority Black. Once that happens there is no hope for renewal. The violence, poverty, corruption and mismanagement are intrinsic features of Black culture, not some random process that just happens to coincide with Black majority rule.
What is going on in places like Baltimore is a microcosm of what is happening in the once prosperous country of South Africa.
It’s a good thing The Sage of Baltimore, H.L. Mencken didn’t live to see the degradation of his once beautiful and vibrant hometown. Black “culture” is a civilization destroying menace.

Looking at that block in Zillow it looks like there is a fairly nice house on the 900 side, vacant lots on the 960 side, and varying degrees of destruction in between.
Google Street View might be a better way to get a sense of the place. I feel sorry for the people in 948. I wonder if they are gentrifiers or one of the last vestiges of a better maintained past.

The home valuations show values around $2700 and rents from $40 to $75 (the only whites renting, a Russian Jew heading the household, are the $75).

I decided to look at the 1910 census as well. There were multiple Franklins there so looked for 512 N Fremont Ave (which told me I wanted Franklin W). That census does not have home valuations, but it does show a white neighborhood with a different occupational profile.

So it looks to me that the 1930 house valuations were about $2700, but that reflects a neighborhood which was already about half black.

Odd numbers are still there in ED 4-973. So I guess we can’t blame the killing of this neighborhood on Route 40. Though that might have been the final nail in the coffin.

I own a beautiful vintage home in West Virginia. Anything of value was stripped out of those homes years ago. The $1 homes are full of black mold and dry rot, not to mention rat droppings and bat guano. No thanks. Tear them down and let nature grow back.

The government uses census data and ships section 8 groids to areas that are “too white”. I’ve mentioned on here before about seeing groids in very small rural towns in Oregon, Wyoming, Washington, etc. These aren’t country coons who moved to those areas for the peace and quiet, you can tell they were relocated there by some social service like HUD, because they look completely out of place and still dress like city groids.

Compare it to the very first demand in this country– the Africans brought to Mobile illegally on the Clotilda in 1860. That one was legitimate. It was a claim by the actual victims against the actual perpetrator. Just as the 1980s reparations went only to those individuals sent to the camps, not their descendants. Instead, the Africans ended up having to buy property from the perpetrator, making him all the richer.
These Africans stayed apart from the native blacks and ran things according to their traditional ways. It seems to have worked better. One of them killed a local black criminal in self-defense, but was convicted anyway. The white power structure took a closer look, and got him pardoned.

Pacino is an attorney and one scene shows him talking to a white guy sitting on those beautiful white marble steps and lines of row houses that Baltimore was noted for back in the day.Baltimore was once a beautiful city but was always a well kept secret overshadowed by its more glamorous neighbors in Philly and Washington.
