It’s happening across the nation. Newspapers have decided concealing the faces/images of those who break the law and commit crime in the communities they purportedly serve is a greater public good than publishing those images.
Why? Because too many non-whites are committing crime, and this serves “little journalistic value” and continues to “reinforced negative stereotypes” white people have established regarding People of Color and criminality.
Interestingly, this is all being done in states once comprising the Confederacy.
Even sweet home Alabama. [AL.com to end publishing most mugshots in stories: Here’s why, AL.com, June 18, 2020]:
Beginning today, AL.com will no longer publish mugshots as part of its crime and justice coverage, with a few exceptions.
Exceptions can include when a suspect is arrested and accused of committing capital murder, corruption by public officials or crimes involving a breach of public trust. And, we’ll use them when a search is ongoing after a violent crime or in unusual instances when the mugshot is of compelling public interest.
I’m certain there are occasions we haven’t yet imagined where we might deem a mugshot necessary to our reporting, and when those instances arise, we’ll explain why we chose to publish the image .
This is a first step in reimagining our coverage of crime and justice. In November, a group of Alabama Media Group reporters and editors began discussing how to make our crime and justice coverage more meaningful for our digital readers.
Here are some of the problems we see with publishing mugshots with crime stories:
- Access to mugshots varies throughout the state. The photograph of someone accused of the same crime may be readily available in one city or county, but not in a nearby jurisdiction. City, state and federal agencies differ on whether the pictures are made available at all.
- Although we previously used almost all mugshots that were made available to us by law enforcement agencies, many readers viewed our use of them as symbolic of our company’s view of their community; our hope is to eradicate that perception.
- Mugshots are typically provided in relation to arrests. Yet criminal proceedings typically reach conclusion months and years later, so the suspect’s guilt or innocence — the rest of the story — is not part of the initial report. Meanwhile, the mugshot will often still be viewed when an individual’s name or case is searched.
- Social media sites and digital templates display images in a way that often lends more significance to the image and story than intended. And, mugshots are often perceived as analogous to guilt, which is unfair given that our judicial system is based on the premise of “innocent until proven guilty.”
The only way the public can evaluate the functioning of its legal system is to observe its activities, to study how police and prosecutors and elected judges go about their jobs. To that end, we will continue to review mugshots regularly and believe they should remain a matter of public record.
Some of you might have questions about mugshots used in past coverage. We have yet to make a decision about how to handle archived material.
We have much work to do in developing an approach that helps Alabamians understand how our state’s criminal justice system works, how it impacts us and how we can all work toward improving it.
The decision to limit use of mugshots is a first step in what will be a transparent process to help us reshape coverage of the criminal justice system in our state. In the coming weeks, I hope to share more details about how you can join our conversation, ask the questions you have about the criminal justice system and help us understand your expectations.
Truth, it seems, has a well known racial bias.
To quote one of the prophets of the 21st century, “punishment must be unusual or else it serves no purpose.”
Those who break the law should have their photos published in local papers, for shame serves as a great deterrent to repeat offending. The community should be made aware of those who break the law, and if racial patterns emerge, then society can pass laws based on this information to protect the law-abiding.
For remember: in a multiracial society, social policy shouldn’t be based on individuals.
And once stereotypes are confirmed to have firm basis in racial truth, social policy will immediately be crafted from these observations.
Interesting to think our ancestors long ago operated under this same protocol…

When I first saw Mug Shots in a magazine, I was mortified. Everyone is upset about bail being eliminated, but I fail to see how the ability to make bail has any bearing on guilt or innocence. Had Jeff Epstein been allowed to make bail, it wouldn’t have made him any less culpable. Denying him bail likely did prevent him from fleeing (if you believe he’s dead?). Still, an ankle bracelet might serve the same purpose. That is an option that’s available now that wasn’t in the past.
Being required to make bail, or sitting in jail because you can’t, is a de facto presumption of guilt. You are, in actuality, being punished without a trial and without being found guilty. Publishing a Mug Shot is also a form of assigning guilt before giving someone the chance to be proven innocent. Anyone who sees it is going to automatically assume that you have perpetrated whatever offense is listed. God forbid you’ve been accused of something truly heinous. Even if you are acquitted, the image will remain in people’s mind.
Perpetrators caught red handed should be brought to trial immediately and a sentence passed quickly. There is no reason to keep someone in jail or out on bail for weeks or months when there is no doubt about their guilt. Violent offenders who pose a risk should also receive expedited trials. Hearings for lesser offenses can be scheduled around the more serious matters and dealt with in a less rigid time frame. There are, obviously, some cases that will require a lot of investigation and where guilt beyond a reasonable doubt is nearly impossible to establish without it. When that involves a serious crime, some adjustment may need to be made. John Stossel once dedicated a program to the assertion that the legal process is long and drawn out because it is profitable for the system to prolong cases. That makes sense when it is remembered that it is ultimately the tax payer who is bearing all of the costs.
I’m hardly a Liberal, and I definitely understand the point Mr. Kersey is making. I just think that, unless they’re on the run and are a genuine menace to the general public, their identities shouldn’t be made public until they are convicted. Under those guidelines, the same disproportionate representation among Negroes would still exist and the pages would still be filled, but it would serve as a notification of convictions rather than merely accusations.
Happy Juneteenth! Along with MLK’s “burffday” and Black History “Munt”, we really need to add National Holidays for George Floyd & Rayshard Brooks.

As usual, I basically agree with Mr. Kersey. But the third reason in the paper’s list isn’t without merit, that is, once someone’s mugshot is broadcast, he or she will always look like a criminal in that photo regardless of whether convicted later or not.
See Dan Cathy, ceo of chick-fil-A. There’s no end in sight for this s***.

The story of the day is that George Floyd probably died of a drug overdose not from the action of cops at all. Apparently this has been known from the beginning. He had lethal doses of several drugs within in him at the time of death. I posted my reaction to him being choked a few days ago. I pointed out that a choke hold makes you unconscious instantly and that didn’t correspond well with his talking to the cops for twenty minutes. So today here at Paul’s blog we are discussing the editorial decision of newspapers to try to change the facts of the case by concealing mug shots. I wonder if this new information about George Floyd is going to run in The Times, the Post, on CNN or MSNBC?
Personally I feel I was mind raped. The supposed victim we only now learn had three times the fatal dose of Fentenyl in him. He was complaining of not being able to breathe before he was restrained. It now seems that he wasn’t choked. He killed himself by ingesting very large doses of Fentenyl, Morphine, and Marijuana. After all the deaths, rioting, looting, burning, and the destruction of small businesses The story is absolutely explosive. The media has committed a huge crime. We’ll see how they cover it. I imagine it will be the top story on Tucker Carlson. I suspect the NYT will not cover it at all or try to twist it’s meaning and evade their own culpability.
To be fair, another reason they stopped is probably because it got repetitive with the same Negroes getting arrested over and over again.
Yep it’s all about smoke and mirrors and making sure our black friends are represented in the way the fake news media sees fit. Just watch your kid that’s white do something very minor, and the news media can’t wait to post your kids picture in the paper and online.
It’s already in the works in Illinois JB Pritzker pandering for votes when he runs for president in 2024, hoping that his favorite pets that live up in the hood will vote for him if he makes a special day for a convicted felon that died from a fentanyl overdose.
One pattern you see not here so much but elsewhere in other articles about race is the commenter will go to some pains to show that while he may agree or disagree with some point or other, he is not a racist or the son of a racist. Or has any connection with that nasty racism stuff. Well I can’t do that. I’m told I’m the direct (but distant) descendant of Abraham Piersay – the man who first brought black slaves to Jamestown. I suppose some BLM fanatic will try to beat me up if they hear of this.
My aunt once showed me the pictures of our family slaves. They were remarkably dark – they didn’t look at all like the lighter skinned mixed blacks we call African-Americans. Of course they weren’t really slaves they were share croppers who worked for my great aunt and uncle. They were probably the children of slaves or former slaves. They were still living an antebellum lifestyle in rural Virginia – no electricity, no running water, no cars or tractors (horses). From what I understand our ‘slaves’ were always well treated, liked and admired. It was not like the diabolical sadists that Quentin Tarantino imagines define slave owners. It was more a familial relationship out there struggling together on a very primitive nineteenth century style farm. I visited the family farm many times as a kid. The sharecroppers (slaves) were next door living in a shack.
So in a sense I had slaves. But I must be a bad person because I have no guilt.
Personally I can’t tell one NAPA from the other at a distance. And I sure as hell don’t need to be close to one of the wretched stinking beasts. Blacks are the leading cause of statistics.
You mean St. George and St. Rayshard?
Thank goodness the perps are oftentimes easily identifiable by name. I have not met a single white Quantavious DeShawn Washington.

Well that’s a little scary…Since someone who has committed a murder won’t have their picture published until they have already been arrested for said murder.
Which, of course, means ordinary citizens will have no idea what the murderer looks like unless and until he has already been arrested.
Somehow seems a little backwards.

Half a dozen years or so ago Chick-fil-A was the hero of conservatives when the owner incurred the wrath of gays by not endorsing their lifestyle. He didn’t discriminate against them, but said he had to stick with his biblical beliefs. Gays promised to retaliate by having “kiss-ins” (gays kissing each other) outside the restaurants. The action fell flat when all it did was encourage people to patronize Chick-fil-A. Indeed, it was the first time I went to one and the line was way out the door.

Disagree with the ‘shaming’ part of the thread.
Face it, these are animals who rape infants and 97 year olds. They gut one another over pancakes and bling. They destroy their own habitats and communities.
If they had any capacity for shame I think it would’ve been triggered already.
The purpose of mugshots had always been as a warning to the honest citizens to be on the lookout for this detainee. It’s not like the cops just drive around photographing negroes for shits and giggles. They photograph them when they arrest them for a crime. It why I don’t have a mugshot. It’s why nice blacks don’t have a mugshot. And yes, there are nice blacks. I don’t want to live near them, but I recognize the difference.
The problem became evident when nearly all the mugshots were negroes. After being inundated with so many images of felonious negroes, we’ve become numb to the facts that stare at us every day.
And it should come as no surprise that the left’s propaganda ministers at the MSM are first to jump on board with these leftist policies. It’s their purpose to make you think the decision is popular among your own people.
It’s not.

These guys took over our local newspaper, laid off a bunch of great writers including my friend’s wife. Like I said, screw ’em. Nobody reads them much anyway. The idea is to give us the most shallow version of what is going on out there.
Anyone with a brain in their head is not being fooled. Who the hell owns al.com anyhow?

Reg Caesar——-Blacks were freed because of the Civil War.If their slave labor was so valuable before the war,why have Blacks not generated much wealth after the war??? Perhaps, most of that wealth was due to White Management.
Of course, try to search for something so "just the facts, ma'am" nowadays, and the PC search engines do everything in their power to give you nothing but the "slavery is evil" slant.
Now, there's no doubt that some people, companies, and even localities might have benefited from slavery. But in the long run, all it did was lead to a lot of inefficiency, kept a lot of free white people poor, and in the long run ran up such a toll (financial, human, and otherwise) that will run this country to ruin at the rate we're going.Replies: @Not Woke--Not Broke
What wealth? What labor? Who says it was valuable before the war? The hard Left, and their useful Lost Cause idiots. Today, whites are still the managers.
Scream as they may at one another, under the skin they ultimately agree.
I’ve often wondered how profitable, really, slavery really was before the civil war? A couple years ago I tried to search online for it and found one thesis that, even at its peak, slavery might have accounted for about 5% of the USA’s gross domestic product.

Chuck E. Cheese is rebranding with his cousin’s name, Guvmint.
Proof of that thesis is visible in Africa. Under colonialism, the blacks had competent management which effectively directed their efforts and things went well. Under black control, everything goes to crap; the “magic dirt” sticks to the shoes of the Whites as they leave.

PO’d in PG County———Many years ago,as a USC student,i became acquainted with another branch of my rather large extended family.I was invited to a huge Christmas party/family reunion. One of my distant cousins was also a USC student. She went on a righteous rant about the poor, mistreated Negroes. When i opined that mules probably generated a thousand times more agricultural wealth than slaves ever did,it got deathly quiet for a few seconds. Then the screaming began. This was the only known time that mules got more attention at a Christmas party than Baby Jesus did. I wound up taking my plate and leaving early.P.S. The cousin that invited me thanked me for bringing a little excitement to what had become a somewhat tiresome family obligation.
Sick of Orcs——–You are a bad man.Spot on accurate, but very bad.
Thanks, Friendo. Unlike Oz I’m both a bad man and a bad wizard.

Also U AF too.
Is it even possible to shine Air Jordans?
Maybe the reason why blacks wear their pants low in the back is for whites to kiss the arse.
