The city of Newark is paying tribute to George Floyd with a new statue in front of City Hall.
Mayor Ras Baraka, actor and filmmaker Leon Pickney and artist Stanley Watts unveiled the 700-pound bronze statue on Wednesday afternoon.
The statue was commissioned by Pickney, sculpted by Watts, and donated this week to the City of Newark
Floyd’s murder at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer last year fueled a global movement for racial justice.
“Hopefully when people walk by and they see it, and they participate, hopefully it inspires them to become active in the struggles that are happening right here in Newark and right here in New Jersey,” Baraka said.
The statue will remain outside City Hall for at least one year.
The ceremony also honored Juneteenth.Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved African Americans of the Emancipation Proclamation and their freedom.

In a five year span, there were 122 young male homicide victims between the ages of 15 to 24, according to sobering findings from the Advocates for Children of New Jersey. The Newark Kids Count report, released Thursday, shows homicide is the leading cause of injury-related deaths for the city’s young men, accounting for about 75 percent of those fatalities.
The 122 youth homicides included 111 black boys and men, 10 Hispanic young men and one who was mixed race.
Statewide, the leading cause of injury-related deaths are unintentional (54 percent) compared to homicides (27 percent).
“From these conversations, we know that the experiences of young men in Newark are diverse and complex. There are no easy solutions, but it is clear that we are listening and engagement is key,” said Khaatim Sherrer El, Managing Director for My Brother’s Keeper Newark.
“We must provide opportunities where we see young men of color as a part of the solution, filled with untapped potential.”

Peak negro… lately I’ve been seeing more and more stories about public figures pushing back on the liberal narrative. So, for now, I think the pace has slowed down, but this is only a resting point for them to regroup. With only 11% of its population being White, Newark sounds like a real crap-hole. Oddly though, its homicide rate isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. There were 50 homicides in 2020, against a population of around 282,000, which comes out to a homicide rate of around 17.7 per 100K.
In contrast, Baltimore’s homicide rate is around 56.8 per 100K (337 killed in 2020, population ~593,000).
According to the Census website, blacks are about 62% of Baltimore’s population, and 50% of Newark. Whites are about 27% of Baltimore, 11% of Newark. Latinos are what makes up the bulk of the difference in Newark. They’re only about 5% of Baltimore, but 36% of Newark.
While I’d still expect Baltimore to be worse, I’m surprised that Newark is so far behind in homicides. I wonder what makes the Baltimore dindus so much more violent? I wonder if the Latinos in Newark help keep them more in check? Dindus tend to walk all over Whitey, but the Latinos usually don’t tolerate their crap as much…so maybe that’s part of it?

It is even more disconcerting that the city was the home of my ancestral family from 150 to 100 or so years ago. My German great grandfather drove a beer dray there and got fairly prosperous, and my grandfather was born there, but that was a different time and even different place to what is there now. I saw a bunch of White Parents on Fox News mourning the loss of their adolescent children due to Fentanyl overdoses. As much as I want to sympathize with their loss, I had a stronger impulse to accuse them of lying to cover up the fact that Officer Derek Chauvin put his knee on their kids necks, because they’re racists. It would have been interesting to see the reactions. I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to become violent with me, it’s only natural. Still, the initial gasp of collective disbelief would be priceless. Audacity has it’s value.

Newark, like many eastern urban areas, was a thriving city fueled by a booming manufacturing economy decades ago. There’s a pic on the internet of a black heavyweight boxing champion – the name and exact date escapes me right now – getting out of a fancy car, dressed to the Nines, and accompanied by an attractive, very stylishly dressed black lady. The Champ looked as if he’d just walked out of the finest haberdashery in the city, of which there were probably several at that time. Police in Washington Township, New Jersey are searching for multiple suspects wanted in connection with the abduction and assault of a waitress Saturday night. It happened around 11:15 p.m. at the Nifty Fifty’s in Turnersville.
Police say the waitress was taken away in a vehicle and assaulted after she confronted a group who allegedly tried to leave without paying for their meal.
Surveillance video obtained exclusively by Action News shows the horrifying moment the waitress was abducted.
“They pulled her into the vehicle and assaulted her inside the vehicle,” said Washington Township Police Chief Patrick Gurcsik.
Police said the 20-year-old waitress was chasing after a group of five people she waited on left without paying a $70 bill.
