So how’s life in Ground Zero of the George Floyd Revolution? Wakanda 2.0 right? [Once nicknamed ‘Murderapolis,’ the city that became the center of the ‘Defund the Police’ movement is grappling with heightened violent crime, CNN, September 25, 2022]:

Marnette Gordon was doing laundry at home in Minneapolis one summer morning last year when a call came from her 36-year-old son.

She figured her son, Telly Blair, was checking in to see if she wanted a soda from a gas station down the street, where he often went for fuel and snacks.

“Mom, I’ve been shot,” he said. “Call the police!”

Marnette, her other son Tamarcus and his 12-year-old daughter rushed to the gas station from their home in the city’s north side, a part of town long beset by violent crime.

Blair’s family came upon his blue 1986 Chevy Caprice at pump No. 5 — beating police and paramedics by a few minutes, they said — only to find him slumped in his car, bleeding from multiple bullet wounds in his chest. A 17-year-old male in an orange hoodie had fired nine rounds from a handgun into Blair’s car before running off.

While an off-duty nurse in scrubs who’d been at the gas station tried to stop his bleeding, Marnette — a heart-transplant recipient — couldn’t bear to watch and stood at a distance. Telly was her caretaker.

“It was just horrible to see him sitting there, waiting on the ambulance,” she told CNN.

The 12-year-old called 911 while watching her uncle struggle to breathe.

“Oh my God, please,” the girl, who was crying, said to a dispatcher, according to 911 transcripts of the August 9, 2021 shooting obtained by CNN. “Hurry up, hurry up, hurry, hurry, he’s dead, hurry up!”

Telly Blair was among 93 people who were murdered in Minneapolis last year, city crime data shows. That’s just a few shy of the total killings in 1995, when the city earned the nickname “Murderapolis.” (Neighboring St. Paul witnessed 38 murders last year — a historic high.)

After the police murder of George Floyd in May of 2020, Minneapolis became a worldwide symbol of the police brutality long endured disproportionately by Black people. In a kind of Newtonian response, the city became the epicenter of the culturally seismic “Defund the Police” movement. But that progressive local effort fizzled with a decisive referendum last November.

Now, with its police department under investigation by the Department of Justice, the city of 425,000 is trying to find a way forward amid a period of heightened crime that began shortly after Floyd’s death.

That year, the number of murders soared to nearly 80 — dwarfing the 2019 body count of 46. It has cooled somewhat this year, though the amount of killing — and violent crime in general — remains elevated far above 2019 levels and homicides are on pace to surpass the 2020 figure. The reasons why are far from clear.

KG Wilson, a longtime resident of the Twin Cities, said police withdrew from violent neighborhoods in the aftermath of Floyd’s killing — a common sentiment among locals.

“The criminals were celebrating. They were getting rich,” he said. “They were selling drugs openly.”

Wilson told CNN the violence devastated his own family: His 6-year-old granddaughter was killed in May of 2021 after getting caught in the crossfire of a gunfight in north Minneapolis. The culprit remains at large.

Another factor was the pandemic, which some observers see as the biggest impetus for the crime surge.

“It unsettled settled trajectories,” said Mark Osler, a former federal prosecutor who is now a professor at St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis. “Kids who were going to school, who would have graduated but drifted off because there is no school — we’re seeing a lot of the violent crime is by juveniles.”

Citing sinking morale in the wake of the unrest after Floyd’s killing, leaders at the Minneapolis Police Department say the officer head count has shrunk from 900 in early 2020 to about 560 in August — a loss of more than a third of the force.

Against this backdrop, the political pendulum on public-safety matters in this reliably liberal city — the “Mini Apple” hasn’t had a Republican mayor since 1973, and that was for just a single day — seems to have swung away from a progressive mindset towards the middle.

And on matters of public safety, the middle is where many of the city’s Black residents already were.

Last year, progressives touted a ballot measure that was said to be a referendum on the “defund” concept. Question 2, as it was known locally, would have replaced the Minneapolis Police Department with a new “public health-oriented” Department of Public Safety and removed a minimum staffing requirement from the city charter.

It failed in November, with 56% of voters rejecting it. That figure was 61% in north Minneapolis, a pair of neighboring city wards where Blacks make up a strong plurality of the roughly 66,000 residents. All but one of the 17 precincts in the north voted against the measure.

“We did not believe that the police should be defunded, but we do believe in police reforms,” said Bishop Richard Howell of Shiloh Temple, a north-side church founded more than 90 years ago.

Rae McKay-Anderson — Telly Blair’s sister — said “you can’t possibly defund the police in a way that’s going to benefit the Black community.”

Dealing the final blow to the local “defund” movement last year was a city council vote to essentially refund a cut they’d made the prior year. Mayor Jacob Frey is proposing another budget bump for the next two fiscal years.

The question of the moment is, if the police budget has been restored, and if all the anti-cop shouting by politicians and activists that left officers demoralized has weakened to a whimper, why are citizens — especially in the rough parts of north Minneapolis — still feeling neglected by police and fearful for their safety?

A feeling of lawlessness, a sense of neglect

Residents of the north side describe a landscape that can feel lawless. Indeed, about 60% of police calls for shots fired this year have come from the area, even though it makes up just 15% of the population, according to city data.

Paul Johnson, 56, said young men openly sell drugs during the day in public places, such as a gas station on Broadway Avenue that has been dubbed the “murder station” due to all of the fatal shootings there. (It is near the one where Blair was killed.)

“You pull up to get gas – they try to sell you drugs,” he said. “And not just three or four, but it’s a bulk of people.”

The perception among many residents is that the police ignore the area.

“They just let it go on,” said Johnson’s friend, Brian Bogan, 42, who said he moved from north Minneapolis to relatively safer St. Paul due to his kids growing up in an area where they don’t know if “it’s fireworks or gunshots.”

I think Minneapolis was nicer when Jesse Ventura was the governor of the state of Minnesota, and wasn’t busy pointing out Building 7 fell free-fall despite not being hit by a plane.

It would be an absolute joke if it wasn’t our civilization reverting to the negro mean.

It is difficult to feel sympathy for people who have had their own way for two years running, yet are dissatisfied with the result. To add insult to injury, it seems these same people are now maintaining that the reason (singular) people are being murdered in the streets is “unclear.”

A half-dozen paragraphs later, the article tells us:

Citing sinking morale in the wake of the unrest after Floyd’s killing, leaders at the Minneapolis Police Department say the officer head count has shrunk from 900 in early 2020 to about 560 in August — a loss of more than a third of the force.

Is it possible that the author of the article could have solved this mystery on his own merely by putting this paragraph first?

Blacks can destroy a “once great city” even if they are less than 20% of the population if whites with the power to end the anarchy and mayhem and warfare refuse and fail to do so and coddle rather than punish violent recidivist black criminals with policies such as “stop and frisk” and sentences of life (Minnesota doesn’t have the death penalty) or at least 10-40 years in prison depending on the nature of the crime and the offender’s record.

I wonder how many whites, including first-offenders, are in jail and prison in Minnesota for nonviolent and often victimless and mala prohibita felonies?

The police have only 2 courses of action when dealing with any large concentration.of blacks. You can try to vigorously suppress negro crime. The only totally asinine approach is to attempt to “fix” the negro crime problem.They—–Are—–NOT——Fixable.

It does seem like “stop and frisk” was made illegal because it actually worked. Now a cop must have a
“reasonable suspicion”that a person is about to commit a specific crime. An experienced police officer

It’s the crime ridden areas that need to be cleaned up and there’s no will to do that job, so why keep paying layabout cops for not doing their job?

The street cops should be defunded simultaneous with new laws that encourage the average citizen to get armed and kill some SOB that attempts to start something; essentially the vigilante spirit written into law. It’s the current victim class that needs to become the civilian police force that’s always right there when the crime occurs. As long as the useless street cops are the pretend solution to crime, nothing will change.

That’s literally what they mean by “community based policing”. You provide the community you serve with the level of police engagement that the community wants.
The community doesn’t want you to arrest a guy who is illegally selling cigarettes in singles, or trying to arrest someone who beat up a shop owner, (who doesn’t even want the police involved), then wandering stoned up the middle of a city street, or trying to take into custody a man who is dying from a drug overdose. Some communities don’t want their friends and family members incarcerated, mostly all they want from the police is that someone will show up and collect the bodies after a gang beef works itself out.
At the opposite extreme, here in my little city of Whitopia we expect an “arrest people for spitting on the sidewalk” level of police engagement. Every community should have the right to get what it wants.

  37. Here’s a question for Liberals, especially those in Minneapolis: do you now understand why they had apartheid in South Africa?

The havoc being wreaked in your cities is a direct result of giving Africans free run of the streets. You are experiencing what Whites are today experiencing in Pretoria and Johannesburg. And for that matter, in formerly European cities like Malmo or Rotherham.

The rising crime in Minneapolis is only a fraction of what you will experience as Africans-in-America become the majority. Look up “farm attacks” in the Rainbow Nation ™. And that, Liberals, will be your future. Enjoy lift in the Bantu-stan.

Meantime, sane Whites are moving towards the only real solution, which is forming their own separate ethno-state.

The reasons [for the rising crime] why are far from clear.

Perhaps they can get a multi-million dollar grant from the federal Department of Justice to study this pressing question of our era.

I look at it this way… if cops “allow” people to burn, loot and murder then they’re equally culpable. I don’t want to hear any of this “I was following orders” bullshit. And if a cop is ordered to not follow the law then his responsibility is to arrest the one who said so. Until you see the mayor, the DA, chief of police, and every other swinging dick who tells you to violate the law, in chains then I have no reapect for them even though I already have next to none today.

I agree with your take on the matter, but there’s an even more overriding reason to jettison street cops; they can’t possibly do the job they advertise they are going to do in any significant way. Common sense says you can’t be in two places at the same time so when the street cop is cruising around in his vehicle burning fuel, he is, by definition, not in the immediate vicinity of a crime victim. They are also the ones involved in the multi million dollar settlements the citizenry get to pay for when they do something stupid and the municipality gets sued.

The average street cop’s police vehicle has something to the effect of “To Protect and To Serve” written on the doors. This is a blatant lie in over 99% of cases because the cop simply isn’t anywhere near a victim when a criminal decides to strike. In most cases, the street cop is many minutes away when seconds count and almost always shows up after the crime has already been committed or at least initiated. Sometimes, the street cop can show up while the crime is still in progress, but that’s not common and criminals plan their business in order to avoid street cops.

Given that most police vehicles are moving signs that advertise their presence, the criminals can spot them from a distance and plan accordingly. For the most part, street cops show up after the fact with a clip board and chalk to draw an outline around the victim’s body and to take notes from witnesses. The plain and obvious fact is that they are near useless in their advertised role.

For the price being paid and the absolutely lousy service being rendered, common sense should indicate that the average individual should be his own “street cop” by being armed and dangerous to any potential criminal. If 10% of any population decided to arm themselves, they would vastly outnumber the useless street cops we have now and could offer their assistance to a victim more often than the street cops of today can while being able to protect themselves as well.

It is the propaganda of “police protection” that people need to see through to realize that it’s all a lie in all but the smallest minority of cases and we pay a high price financially and also with our loss of our natural right of self defense to rely on a blatant fraud.

The street cop is there to protect the mayor, city council, school board, etc from the angry citizenry and act as their paymaster’s insurance policy to protect them from the citizenry they’re supposed to be serving. The people should be demanding their natural right of self protection and be able to arm themselves with their weapon of choice. The 2nd Amendment has been totally violated to produce the current crime wave.

I agree, last year I spent under $100 in that negro infested business. Shopping in there is like being in Africa.
I have both BJs and Sams memberships. Sams was giving memberships to negro churches, therefore we had way too many in the store for my money. Their carts were overflowing with merchandise.

One of the best times ever was watching the fireworks safely anchored off shore from Hart Plaza partying on my friends father’s Chris Craft. My buddies, about ten young ladies, lotts of party favors.

Other years I was at the Plaza in the crowd. Believe me you don’t want to do that. Random fights break out all the time, pick pockets, your person space no longer exists. We saw negro DPD officers turn a couple of drunken Taylor ‘Tuky types faces purple. 10 on 2. Another year, there was a very uneasy feeling in the air as darkness hadn’t fallen yet, the crowd was alive, and Whites had possesion of Hart Plaza, the fountain, all the concrete up to the river, and steps, area surrounding the stage, all that.

I wasn’t at full on race realist yet but noticed the devision of black and White, there was a large amount of them closer the the Ren Cen under the trees and on every picnic table. One could sense or feel their seething resentment or ingrained hatred. It was almost as if they were individually and collectively ready to attack.

And who can forget what happened to Jo Ann Was and her girlfriend? Two White ladies jumped by a pack of fat ass negro C-words and savagely attacked ,then robbed of their gold chains. All captured on film. Not that it matters, but was the blacks greater motivation, stricking out at attractive ,unaccompanied White women or theft?

Another year I took a girl friend ( looked just like a 17 yr old Elvira but redhead), and as we walked through the crowd she told me the negros made her feel very uncomfortable. A few years later she ran one over on Michigan Ave. in Ypsilanti, MI. On her way home from classes at U of M one night, hit a homeless black bum that walked right into her path. She was freaked TF out! Good thing it was just him alone, no other blacks present, and the cops arrived quickly.

This occurred in the time before cell phones, it was dark out, and the blm was pinned beneath her car. I shudder to think of the outcome, had this occurred in the presence of a black crowd.

Cops are the regimes foot soldiers. I don’t expect any of them to protect me. I look at them as expensive janitors and stenographers with a penchant for robbing the citizenry in order to keep them supposedly “safe”. My local badged bandits have the nauseating slogan of “In God We Trust” plastered on every rolling tax trolley. As if! More empty slogans for empty headed slaves.

Bernie Goetz (remember him?) dispatched four black thugs on a New York subway train and would have gotten away with it if he had kept his mouth shut. He had previously been robbed and injured and was determined not to let it happen again.
The only charge the authorities could make “stick” was an “illegal weapons possession” charge. He was sentenced to a year in jail for defending himself.
Even in those days, a murder charge against Goetz would have been impossible for a grand jury to approve.
In those days, video surveillance was in its infancy and it was quite possible to avoid being observed, a good thing for Goetz.
Subway crimes went down precipitously after Goetz’ actions.
The “supreme court” (I use that term loosely) has rued that police have no duty to protect individual citizens–only “society at-large”.
    Self-protection is the individual’s responsibility.

Here at the house, I have a couple of decades plus of military experience. I have tools to dig in or out of natural disasters. I have extinguishers and hoses. I have a field trauma kit and bandages. I have weapons both melee and firearm. I know how to use them. I know how to trench, support and revet. I understand the fire triangle and appropriate approaches. I understand breathing, bleeding and shock. I know how to detain, restrain and control. I have done all of these at least occasionally, professionally. I’ve stood on top of a collapsing levee in a flood. I’ve fought a structure fire from inside so we could get everyone out before the fire department showed up, which only took two minutes, but people can die that fast. I’ve had structures collapse while I was working on them. I’ve been in an aircraft that had a “mechanical” on approach and had to be repaired in-flight before landing. I’ve helped control a brush fire. I’ve hauled disabled vehicles out of ditches in sub-zero weather.

My ex wife has over a decade of service and some of the same training.

We have trained our young adult children.

My wife is a rancher who knows her way around a shotgun, livestock, sutures and tools, hurricanes and floods, and works in investigations professionally.

Our current house guest is another veteran.

This means if anything happens at the house, and last year we had a lightning strike, a tornado and a flood within 10 days’ we’re pretty well prepared.

Now, we’re probably better off than 95% of the households out there. The level of disaster that necessitates backup varies.

If we find it necessary to call 911, it means the party is in progress and it’s bad.

You will probably not be going home safe at the end of your shift.

And you know what? If it gets to that point, I really don’t give a shit. I don’t give a shit if you get smoked. I don’t give a shit if you fall under a tree. I don’t give a shit if you get shot at.

Because at that point, I’ve done everything I can with that same circumstance, and run out of resources.

If my concern was “you going home safe,” then I’d just fucking hunker down and die. Because I wouldn’t want that poor responder to endanger himself.

Except, that’s what I pay taxes for, and that’s what you signed up for. Just like I signed up to walk into a potential nuke war in Germany and hold off the Soviets, and did walk into the Middle East and prepare to take fire while keeping expensive equipment functioning so our shooters could keep shooting.

There’s not a single set of orders I got that said my primary job was to “Come home safe.” They said it was to “support the mission” or “complete the objective.” Coming home safe was the ideal outcome, but entirely secondary to “supporting” or “completing.” Nor, once that started, did I get a choice to quit. Once in, all in.

When that 80 year old lady smells smoke or hears a noise outside her first floor bedroom in the ghetto, she doesn’t care if you go home safe, either. She’s afraid she or the kids next door won’t wake up in the morning.

If I call, I expect your ass to show up, sober, trained, professional. I expect you to wade in with me or in place of me, and drag a child out of a hole, or out from a burning room, or actually stand up and block bullets from hitting said child, because by the time you get there, I’ll have already done all that. And there will be field dressings, chainsawed trees, buckets and empty brass scattered about.

I don’t want to hear some drunk and confused guy squirming on the ground playing “Simon Says” terrified you so much you had to blow him away. I don’t want to hear that some random guy 35 yards away who you had no actual information on , may have reached toward his waist band. Or that “the tree might fall any moment” or that “the smoke makes it hard to see.”

Near as I can tell, I don’t hear the smokejumpers, or the firefighters, or the disaster rescue people say such things.

But it’s all I ever hear from the cops. If you and your five girlfriends in body armor, with rifles, are that terrified of actually risking your life for the theoretically dangerous job you volunteered for and can quit any time, then please do quit.

You can get a job doing pest control and go home safe every night.

Until a bunch of fucking pussies with big tattoos, small dicks, body armor and guns blow you away for minding your own business.

Because what you’re telling me with that statement is, your only concern is cashing a check. That’s fine. But if that’s your concern, don’t pretend you’re serving the public. If you wanted to help people at risk of life, you would be a firefighter, running into buildings, dragging people out, getting scorched regularly.

If you’re cool with writing tickets, then there’s jobs where you can do just that.

If you want to tangle with bad guys and blow them away, fair enough. But understand: That means they get to shoot first to prove their intent, just as happens with the military these days. Our ROE these days are usually “only if fired upon and no civilians are at risk.”

If your plan is “shoot first, shoot later, shoot some more, then if anyone is still alive try to ask questions,” and bleat, “But I was afeard fer mah lahf!” you’re absolutely no better than the thugs you claim to oppose. All you are is another combatant in a turf war I don’t care about.

Since I know your primary concern is “being safe,” then I’ll do you the favor of not calling. Cash your welfare check, and try not to shoot me at a “courtesy” sobriety checkpoint for “twitching my eye “in a way that suggested range estimation.

If you’re one of the vanishingly few cops who isn’t like that, then what the hell are you doing about it? If there’s going to be a lawsuit costing the city millions, isn’t it better that it be a labor suit from the union over the clown you fired, than a wrongful death suit over the poor bastard the clown shot? Both are expensive, but one has a dead victim you enabled. So how much do you actually care about that life?

How is the training so bad that it’s not clear who is the scene commander who gives the orders?

How is it that trigger happy bozos who, out of costume, look no different from the gangbangers you claim to oppose, get sent up front to fulfill their wish of hosing someone down because “I was afraid for my life!”?

Why does the rot exist in your department?

If you can’t do anything about it, why are you still in that department?

At some point, collective guilt is a thing.

You’ve probably not been a good cop for a long time.

And I still don’t care if you go home safe. I care that everyone you purport to “serve and protect” goes home safe.

  70. @anarchyst

I remember Bernie Goetz well. I came close to mirroring his actions on a crowded NY subway one winter morning years before he did. Without saying a word, I started moving toward a pavement ape with a boom box at max volume that just stepped into the subway car. My wife’s only words were – “you’ll go to jail” as she grabbed the back of my coat because she knew what I was about to do. That incident fueled the determination to leave the insanity of New York.

Given the lack of any realistic alternative, I have a Costco membership.

To its credit, Costco runs a decent scam-free operation with an almost too-good-to-be-true return policy. I did stop buying their deli chickens when I saw an expose on how they’re raised.
