Montgomery County Public Schools is looking to rename schools named after slave owners, and Francis Scott Key Middle School could be the next one up for debate.
Francis Scott Key, a Maryland native, was a poet and lawyer best know for writing the national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner.
In 2019, Montgomery County Public Schools – the state’s largest school district – launched a review that found six schools in the county were named after slave owners.
ccording to MoCo360, the review found the schools named after slaver owners are: Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring; Francis Scott Key Middle School in Silver Spring; Col. Zadok Magruder High School in Derwood; Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville; John Poole Middle School in Poolesville and Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville.
A recent Fall 2023 report from Montgomery County’s Periodical for Historical Research added a seventh school to the list – Julius West Middle School.
In February, members of the Magruder High School community filed a petition to rename the school because the school’s namesake ‘does not meet the acceptable criteria for a school name,’ reported The Washington Post.
Magruder, a founding father of Montgomery County and Revolutionary War officer, reported he had 26 enslaved people on his property on the 1790 Census.
Since it received the petition, the school system sent out a survey to the community about renaming the school and hired the consulting group Coaction Collective to run forums where people shared their perspectives of the school’s name.
Mark Simonson, who is white and a parent of a junior at Magruder High said, ‘It was just one of those things that really resonated with me. The name is now synonymous to me as someone who enslaves others. I thought, “I would like to pursue things to where Magruder High School is renamed as soon as possible.”‘
The last time the county renamed a school was in 2021 when Col. E Brooke Lee Middle School was renamed to Odessa Shannon Middle School after the first Black woman elected to public office in Montgomery County.
The process for that began in 2019 when then-County Council President Nancy Navarro brought up concerns over the namesake.
At the time of the initial 2019 report there were 207 public schools in the county, 51 were named after people. For the 2022-2023 school year, there are 211 schools.
In 2022, the board of education instated a new school naming policy that includes criteria for naming a building after a person.
The person must be deceased and made a demonstrated contribution to the community, county, state or nation.
Key served in the War of 1812 and wrote The Star Spangled Banner witnessing the twenty-five hour bombardment of Fort McHenry.
The National Park Service reported that Francis Scott Key had a conflicted relationship with slavery and as an attorney believed ‘by the law of nature all men are free. The presumption that even Black men and Africans are slaves is not a universal presumption.’
However, his family owned slaves at the time of his birth and it is believed Key purchased his first enslaved person around 1800 and by 1820 he owned six enslaved people.
It is reported that Key freed several of his slaves, including two boys named Joe and John, who were two years and six months of age – but it is speculated the decision was motivated by profit.
Key has many other memorials in his honor including the Key Bridge connecting Washington, D.C. to Virginia, the Francis Scott Key Monument in Baltimore and several other schools across the country.
Francis Scott Key Middle School has a student body that is 98 percent non-white (66 percent black). Only six percent of students achieve proficiency at math. It represents the world Francis Scott Key and his contemporaries tried to spare their posterity from encountering. In fairness, the school is unworthy of being named after this great man.

Objections to Key go far beyond what he may or may not have said or done regarding slavery. As a lawyer, Key represented several slaves seeking their freedom in court, as well as slaveholders seeking the return of runaway slaves. But here’s the problem: on behalf of the slaveholder lobby, he misused his power as U.S. Attorney to suppress the free exercise of the First Amendment. In 1833, Key influenced a grand jury to indict the editor and printer of an antislavery publication. In 1836, Key indicted a man for the crime of possessing a trunk full of antislavery pamphlets.
The present Key controversy embodies the great distortion of antebellum US history about slavery. Americans were opposed to the power over the national government of the slaveholder oligarchy, which had despised democracy right from the start – just read Madison’s Federalist articles, for pity’s sake. Few cared about the human rights of slaves and fewer still wanted political or social equality with blacks. Most preferred their repatriation to Africa as the only just solution to the problem that southern aristocrats had created in pursuit of the great wealth that accrued from a system permitting the legal theft of their employees’ wages.

Montgomery County actually isn’t THAT black, at least not compared to Prince George’s and some other counties. According to the Census website, the breakdown is 20.7% black, 16.2% Asian, $20.3% Latino, and a fairly resilient 41.4% non-Latino white.
However, looking specifically at that middle school, the breakdown, according to schooldigger dot com, is:
Hispanic/Latino: 46.5%
black: 41.4%
Asian: 7.9%
white: 2.5%
Mystery Meat: 1.5%
And 71.2% of them get free/discounted lunch.
It’s been awhile since I’ve been out that way, but it sounds like Silver Spring has turned into a hell hole. Looking at the stats for that school though, at least going back to 1991, it was never majority-white, although whites did hold the largest chunk until 1994, when the blacks took that title, and the latinos steadily replaced the whites.

My experiences with uncivilized blacks began at an early age, manifesting itself in my experiences about race, and the inability of blacks to function in white society which fully developed in high school.
In the 1960s, Detroit public schools were already in their decline with the disruptions from black “students”. (I use that term loosely).
In fact, Detroit’s high schools had “black students unions” that were successful in getting the American flag removed from the front of the schools and replacing them with “black nationalist” flags.
The ordeal that us white students had to go through was harrowing, to say the least. White students did not use the restrooms, as a “beatdown” by multiple blacks was usually the result. Us whites always tried to be in clear view of school personnel at all times in order to avoid attacks by blacks.
Blacks never fought one-on-one, the “pack mentality” was evident then as is today.
Any attempts by us whites to defend themselves was met with indifference, and even outright hostility, especially from black school officials. You see, even then, blacks were not “responsible” for their behavior.
Blacks did not want to learn, the same situation that still exists today.
Despite being given every consideration, and more, blacks were always disruptive.
You see, just as is the case today, excelling at education is “acting white” and was frowned upon by black “students”. Most of the teachers just shrugged their shoulders, let the disruptions go on until the next class period. It only took a few blacks in class to disrupt the whole “learning process”.
Almost all of the teachers were deferential to blacks, although there were a few good teachers who tried to carefully shield their white and Asian students (us) from predatory blacks, giving us additional attention and coursework, knowing that we would excel in spite of the, violent, raucous atmosphere.

Claiming the Civil War was about eradicating slavery was a way for the victors to take the moral high ground but it was just a lie, as much as saying the Vietnam War was waged for the benefit of the Vietnamese, not the actual reasons revealed by the release of the Pentagon Papers.

Patrick Boyle (who used to post on SBPDL frequently) had a good video on the Tuskegee airmen over on his channel “Disturbing Ideas” on youtube. He debunked a lot of the myths surrounding the Tuskegee airmen. The comment section below his video was full of hate-filled people ranting, raving and screaming at him for daring to kick one of their sacred cows. Lol.
I miss Pat and his insightful posts and the jewtube videos. It’s very SAS that he passed away. He, like Colin Flaherty, I think had a lot more work to be done in their field. Gone too soon, both of them.

Deluded White Liberals exist, however. Several of my family members fall into this category. Enthusiasm for negroes tends to flow from a lack of experience with them, and their TNB. DWLs (deluded) feel that negroes would be just as they are portrayed on television commercials, if only we would love up on them a little more.
The DWL (disingenuous) is one of the most poisonous beings to walk the earth. These are the demons who believe that you and I must have diversity thrust our way, consequences be damned. With regard to negroes, they would never allow themselves to be in the company of a non curated “Talented Tenth” supplicant.

If he took the vax and died from it, that’s horrible. As a matter of curiosity, I wonder how many commenters on SBPDL have taken the vax. I, for one, never have and never will. As for the vax, I keep seeing ads/commercials telling people to get the covid vax because it’s supposed to be bad this winter. I doubt that those of us who’ve never had it will be influenced by a continuing fear campaign but I know people who’ve had so many boosters on top of the original shot that they’re practically pin cushions.
I have a few of these types I’m my family as well. The funny thing is they grew up in the days when groids were being bussed to their high schools and experienced the chaos and race riots caused by blacks. They lived around them in the projects, had relatives & friends robbed and mugged by them, and moved as far away from their dusky pets as soon as they were able to. They know the score, yet will still make excuses for black dysfunction, and condemn any comment pointing out their faults as being racist. These aren’t young impressionable teens & college students who grew up with rap music and the “blacks are cool/smart/sexy” media marketing bullshit, they’re educated professional people who are getting close to retirement or are retired.
They’re a bunch of NIMBYs who refuse to accept a lifetime of personal experiences. I’m surprised they don’t burn their hands on the stove every time they cook.
My 80 year old mom is all jabbed up. Every time a new “booster” comes out she goes and gets it. She’s hopelessly left-leaning because she drinks all the koolaid the msm pumps out every single day. She now has heart issues that just appeared in the last 6 months. I have one brother that didn’t get jabbed because, like myself, he gets it. We agree that our mother isn’t going to be around much longer. Our other 2 brothers? We hope they got the placebos.
Keep ‘em scared, keep ‘em returning for another jab. And another. No, my wife and I are not vaxxed.
I actually had Covid about a year ago, along with another ailment, the ailment causing an emergency room visit. The first thing they did was check for Covid, which according to the nurse, I had. It just amounted to a two week bout, about the same level of illness as the flu. They prescribed pills, I forget the name now, which I tossed.
We received the statement from the hospital about services performed. Guess what was at the top of the list in caps? Yep. Not the major ailment, but COVID.
I needed an operation for the original ailment, and before surgery, I told them I didn’t want a transfusion if that became necessary. To me, it was less risk than taking the chance of having that poison running through me.
On the other side of the spectrum, a relative couldn’t wait for the children’s vax to reach where she lived, so she traveled to another city to ensure her 10 year-old daughter would be vaxxed as soon as possible. Fortunately, she’s shown no adverse signs. Yet. I imagine that in every family, there’s a whole spectrum on this issue.
Does Covid exist? Yes. And it could have been successfully and safely treated by pennies on the dollar drugs: Ivermectin and HCQ as examples.
In my opinion, this whole Covid episode was a golden opportunity for soulless promoters to collect their billions, never mind the people adversely affected now and possibly in the future.
I knew from the start that the vaxxes (better described as gene therapy and, better yet, bio-weapons) could not possibly be good for anyone after being rolled out so quickly. It was also ridiculous to trust known liars and people, who had publicly spoken of the need to engage in large scale population reduction, on what should be injected into our bodies.
Many people, perhaps as an expression of their political beliefs, believed every ridiculous thing they were told, wore useless masks, came no closer than six feet to anyone, followed arrows in the aisles of grocery stores, etc., and treated me like a leper. This included family and “friends.”
The only people I’ve known who got sick were those who made themselves human pun cushions. Meanwhile my health has been just fine.
I will not forget what happened during the last few years or what people said and did. During “unusual times” people show their true colors and it was very illuminating.
It was about two years ago that the dementia patient in the White House warned that he and his ilk were running out of patience with those of us resisting coercion and force, hinting at stronger measures soon to come. Then the war in Ukraine started and suddenly Covid hysteria was gone from the headlines.
I don’t think they’re through with us yet and we’re likely to have to deal with this again sometime in the future.
No matter what, I will never submit.

I’ll confess, I got the two-dose Moderna shot, back over the summer in 2021. Haven’t gotten any boosters, though.
I hadn’t thought about any correlation before, but I do notice I’ve been feeling a bit lethargic lately, and an occasional tightness in my chest. However, I’ll also confess that working from home has made me lazy, and perhaps I do enjoy a cigar a bit too often. So I don’t know if it’s an after-effect from the shot, my own bad habits, some combination of both, or neither?
Anyway, if I suddenly drop off with no explanation, feel free to chalk it up to the vaccine!
