It’s the type of midwestern city Ray Bradbury wrote about in his classic, The Halloween Tree (seriously, get this book for your kids/grandchildren). Even though it’s rated as Reader’s Digest Nicest Place in America, the leaders of the city are upset the city is too white… [‘Anywhere you go, you’re accepted’: NE Ohio city named ‘Nicest Place in America’,, October 21, 2019]:

More than 1,000 nominations were filed with Reader’s Digest for the Nicest Place in America designation. The magazine narrowed the field to one community in each state. Residents then voted on their communities. Reader’s Digest considered the votes when it chose the winner, Columbiana.

Amid the country’s deep political divide, Columbiana runs against the prevailing anger and angst spewed so often on airwaves and social media. Earlier this month, Reader’s Digest announced that it had selected Columbiana the Nicest Place in America, noting how the city of 6,400 lifts its young and old, its thriving and its struggling.

The magazine chose the city from more than 1,000 nominations and unveiled the award Oct. 10, in front of a packed theater, where Offenburg’s cast was holding a dress rehearsal.

Reader’s Digest sought cities where people treat others well, where respect and community pride are seen in daily life.

It says it found something special in Columbiana, a city where a resident has donated $1.5 million to fix up a park, where the young and old stress inclusiveness, and where new ideas are welcomed, not challenged.

“Columbiana embraces everyone,’’ said Jackie Mercer, as she sipped coffee at Generations Café, off the city’s circle. “It accepts the farmers and the hipsters. There’s something about it that makes you feel like you’re home here.’’

Across from Mercer sat her friend, Kathy Bennett. She rattled off the community days and the special events that shut down streets and draw large crowds. And then she voiced what makes her town so special.

“Anywhere you go, you’re accepted,’’ Bennett said.

‘You’re never excluded here’

Mary Wilson nominated the city for the award when she wrote to Reader’s Digest last spring. At 91, she became fascinated with it after watching her grandson, Clayton Kerrigan, perform for Offenburg’s Crown Theater Productions in special-needs plays.

“I saw how [Offenburg] affects the actors’ lives, how he sees the person, how he makes a point to reach that person,’’ she said. “I was so impressed.’’

But Wilson sees that from more people than Offenburg and from more places than just inside the theater. She said it is evident in the simplest forms of everyday life.

She said a trip to the grocery store takes so much longer in Columbiana because so many people stop and talk. Some hug, some laugh. But no one leaves without a long conversation.

Nicole Ice agreed. She moved to Columbiana from Aurora about 6 years ago to be closer to her boyfriend, who lives in Pittsburgh, which is 40 minutes away.

“It was a bit of a culture shock for me, but in a good way,’’ she said. “Things are more relaxed here. The downtown is charming, don’t get me wrong. But it really is the people. I was a foreigner, and they accepted me.’’

She gets a view of that at her business, Sundog Cellars Winery and Cidery. There, people who arrive on Harleys sit next to young parents who drive minivans and established professionals who pull up in luxury sedans.

“It’s a neat synergy to see people sit down together,’’ she said.

Sarah Grenga said she has felt that way since her family moved back from Baltimore recently.

“You’re never excluded here,’’ Grenga said. “You can feel differently about things, but you are still a part of the community.’’

Attracting everyone

In some ways, Columbiana is typical of a lot of small cities in Ohio. It has a downtown in which nearly every storefront is owned and operated by local businesses. The only exception is a Subway sandwich shop, and that is owned by a city resident.

A diversified manufacturing base makes up a good deal of the city’s workforce. Columbiana has several small to midsized businesses, including R&L trucking, which has about 300 employees. Vari-Wall, a tubing specialist, has about 100 workers.

Its population, according to the U.S. Census, is more than 98 percent white. City leaders are seeking ways to attract diversity.

“Diversity, like variety, is the spice of life,’’ Ice said.

Lance Willard, the city manager, agreed. He said the city continues to push for more events in its downtown that draw people from beyond the region.

“If you have a welcoming downtown, you will create a culture that attracts everyone,’’ Willard said.

Columbiana’s unemployment rate hovers at 4 percent, which is lower than the rest of the region, which is about 6 percent.

It leans conservative, a contrast to 40 years ago when the region’s steel and autoworkers backed Democrats. In 2016, Columbiana County, as a whole, gave Donald Trump nearly 70 percent of its vote.

The crime rate is low, even in the shadows of Youngstown, a city north of Columbiana. In the 2000s, The Plain Dealer reported Youngstown was the murder capital of the country, on a per capita basis.

Columbiana is about 20 miles from Youngstown, and a world away from its problems.

Columbiana is 98 percent white and rated as the nicest place in America (despite the lack of vibrancy in the town). A city like Baltimore (70 percent black), Detroit (83 percent black), or Birmingham (75 percent black) are some of the most dangerous places in America to live, completely devoid of social capital, yet no one ever argues those cities need more white people to make them better places to live. Of course, white people are actually blamed for the state of those aforementioned cities because of white privilege, redlining, systemic inequality, and discrimination, never mind elected black people running the local governments…

However, Columbiana is too white and is in need of immediate racial diversification, even though the current racial dynamics of the city were required to create the conditions for Reader’s Digest to bestow the said honorific on the 98 percent white city…

Columbiana is the nicest place in America because of the individual contributions of the white people who collectively reside there, just as Baltimore is one of America’s most dangerous city’s because of the individual contributions of the blacks (representing 70% of the city’s population) who reside there.

Yet another reminder why America is irredeemable.

I got a great idea! How about we invite a bunch of blacks in? They seem like really good intelligent people in those TV commercials.

  3. Yes the last thing that city needs is diversity. The whole state was like that back in the 50’s and 60’s. Not so much anymore since the urban areas have exploded across the countryside. All larger towns and most medium sized towns now have their crime ridden no go areas. Yep, diversity sure is great!

  4. Augustus says:

Start like other leftists start. Get you some large apartment buildings full of section 8 residents. Soon the richness of diversity will overrun a couple of your white grade schools, and for every diverse student, a much less diverse white family will move out. Then you fools will realize what made your community so nice……homogeneity. Too late, but you’ll learn. Good luck on your way to knowledge, which you can take with you to your new town, as you flee your old home.

  5. AshtonS says:

But, but… diversity is our strength!!

No. Our strengths are grounded in common values and shared heritage (including, but not limited to, racial heritage); values such as individualism and personal responsibility, commitment to family and community, an entrepreneurial spirit, respect for legal and civic institutions, aversion to financial dependence on any institution, healthy skepticism of government intervention, etc.

These values are technically open to everyone. But they are disproportionately found in white people.

“Diversity, like variety, is the spice of life,’’ Ice said.

Lance Willard, the city manager, agreed.

A little life survey of this man, who I think is a sympathetic but tragic figure:

Lance Willard (in his mid-40s today), from information available online, is an all-around competent, soft of speech, magnanimous of demeanor, typical representative of Middle America.

He was born and raised in nearby Portage County, Ohio (92% White, 4% Black in 2010), earned a BS in Environmental Science from Youngstown State University (circa 1995), then an MS (circa 1997) from the same school while also teaching there. His entire life has been spent in or near the Youngstown, Ohio, metropolitan area, generally in whiter areas of it, spending almost all his post-college adult life in what must be the whitest significant city of all in the Youngstown metro area, Columbiana (98.9% White and 0.1% Black on the 2000 census[!]. It looks set to break the 1.0% Black line on the 2020 census for the first time ever).

Lance Willard worked in the wastewater field in Newton Falls, Ohio (98% White, <1% Black in 2010), from about 1997 to 2001, and thereafter as Wastewater Superintendent for Columbiana City (2001-2013). Between about 2009 and 2012 or 2013, he earned a doctoral degree in Leadership from Argosy University.

The above information is mainly from a podcast interview he did in July 2019. He describes his path to getting the doctorate as follows:

There was nothing more to learn here. I wanted to go back to school. That [rica 2008]’s when Keith Chamberalin and I went up to Cleveland State University. I was thinking about taking a management course up there. Local governments send a lot of employees up there.

It was going to be a two-years program, and I thought, “Well, if I’m taking another two years, I might as well go after something like a doctorate.” …Every class that I took I absolutely loved, and I took that time, in those four years — I was a hermit; thankfully I had a wife that understood that and lots of family members. I missed lots of birthdays and such — I did study for four years, and I wrote everything that I possibly could on the city of Columbiana. My dissertation was on Corporate Social Responsibility of Columbiana.

With his dissertation in hand, even if it was from a no-name school it must be one of the most comprehensive studies of the city of Columbiana done in our time, Willard was narrowly elected (Jan. 2013), by city council vote, to be City Manager, replacing the retiring Keith Chamberlain, whom Willard credits as being his decade-long mentor.

The outline of this man, Lance Willard, that I get is that he is a really solid person, an asset to any community that has him. A major net contributor; the kind of man that built America, really. But also that typical kind of small-town, Middle America type that the hit-and-run Big Media thugs will take advantage of. It would be easy to see a figure like this get Ferguson’ed.

Lance Willard is second from left in this pic:

Beware of the outside influence of “local” (city manager, typically from somewhere else) officials and the so called local media (out of state based and corporate owned) to start the diversity conversation.

The lovely Lake Huron town of Alpena MI, 97% white, is about to be shamed into thinking they’re not “doing enough” to attract diversity to the community. The Alpena News, corporate owned, has announced an upcoming 4 part series in the paper to promote ideas to enhance diversity and all it brings with it.

Very insidious pattern emerging from the SJW forces to deal with. Should local merchants pull their ads?

  11. This should be a very loud and clear wake-up call to the residents that they need to get rid of these “city leaders” before they destroy everything. That is, assuming the residents aren’t idiots who support such suicidal plans in the first place.

In a town of only 6400 people, all they’ll need is a couple of Section 8 apartment buildings filled with groids and the crime rate will go through the roof. Then, they can kiss their safe downtown area goodbye as well as their quality of life.

  12. Cujo says:

Attracting “diversity” is like attracting flies, something smells like sh!t when it happens. Leave the nogs where they’re at, and quit trying to destroy property values in your town. Gentrification is the way to go, not diversity.

  15. Much like Civil War reenactments, a Diversity Carnival should visit these too-White towns several times a year. Choose a random city block and bring in truckloads of litter, syringes and fake poop. Spray walls with (water-based) graffiti. Have 50 or so Diversity Players, all non-White, declare their own territories and blast their music, including the charming mohammedan 5x daily call to pedophilia and honor killings. Like a Halloween theme park, have random extras harassing young White girls, babbling needle-armed homeless erecting sidewalk tents and Knockout Game enthusiasts (using airhorns rather than fists.) Demonstrate an orc-run city council, all on the take. Simulate raised taxes with a 40% “fee” added to all purchases. Feature Section Democrat housing and a mini-Pride parade of obnoxious quarter-dressed weirdos. In the local park playground hold a mock gang crossfire shooting of children and funeral with swaying orcs crying out for more gubmint programs. Feature a red flag law raid on a purveyor of hate speech and end the event with an Antifa Players mini-riot tearing down statues of genocidal racists Ronald McDonald and Grimace.

Majority-White towns need to know what they’re missing.

  17. According to the census website, 32.3% of Columbiana’s population is 65 and over, compared to 16.0% of the United States in general. So, it sounds like much of it is one big retirement community. That might be what keeps it so quaint and sedate.

At the opposite end, 16.0% of Columbiana’s population is 18 and under, versus 22.4% for the country at large.

It sounds like a town that won’t be able to sustain itself, at the rate things are going, without some influx of people. But, crying out for die-versity is going to be a death sentence for that tranquility.

  18. Glock45 says:

I imagine many whites in Columbiana, when they hear that they are about to be “diversified”, aren’t too thrilled about that prospect. Because a fair amount of people in Columbiana are whites who fled from the ravages of “diversity” in nearby Youngstown, and, at a subconscious level at the very least, know that “diversity” only means decay and destruction.

  19. Glock45 says:

This story reminds me what I find so damned simultaneously frustrating and entertaining about shitlibs:

There they are, living safely and comfortably in their 98% white little town.

Then they start preaching the “joys of diversity” and wanting to be “inclusive” and start demanding more non-whites should be living among them.

(Funny how, time and time and time again, it’s only ever white folk who go around preaching these things, no??)

Then, when they get their wish, all that safety and comfort vanishes as crime skyrockets and everything starts going down the crapper.

Then they wonder what happened to their formerly nice city and will do all sorts of mental gymnastics to avoid blaming the very non-whites who brought all the crime and pathology with them.

  20. Doug P. says:

98% white towns are bad and must be dragged down to the same level of misery and dysfunction as major and midsized cities all across America. These are the types of towns HUD secretly buys houses in to import section 8 families, or where some church group starts importing Somalis/Syrians/Sudanese into. They’re the type of towns that when the census reports end up on some affirmative action bureaucrat’s desk and they see it as a place to send ghetto rats from the projects to so they can have access to all those opportunities YT be keeping for himself. Anytime the city you live in makes it onto one of those “Top 10 Cities To Live In” lists, it’s time to sell your house and move, because that is the start of the decline. The only good thing about it is that you can get top dollar for your property due to living in a flavor of the month town.

Columbiana County, as a whole, gave Donald Trump nearly 70 percent of its vote.

Columbiana County, Ohio — Presidential Voting
    – The county has about 105,000 residents in the 2010s;
    – The county is 96% White, 2% Black in the 2000s and 2010s;
    – about 6,300 live in the county seat of Columbiana City.

2016: Trump beat Hillary by a huge margin, 41 points, in Columbiana County.

Trump ’16 won the biggest margin in Columbiana County history in the modern era.

In the fifteen elections before 2016, 1956 to 2012, Columbiana presidential voting was split, often roughly 50-50. Democrats won the county five times, Republicans ten times. The biggest Republican wins were Nixon ’72, by 26.5 points, and Eisenhower ’56 by 33 points. The biggest Democratic wins were Clinton ’96 (12 points) and LBJ ’64 (29 points, over Goldwater).

The huge margin for Trump suggests a substantial (ethno-)nationalist voting bloc in Columbiana, as throughout Middle America, that was never tapped into before the 2015-16 campaign season.

  32. PK, this is the same thinking the people of Sweden had; they thought they were not diverse enough! Never invite the non-whites into your city.

Readers Digest is making a bold move in electing a small white town as its model. In not choosing a black community, they risk being called racist.

I find it hard to believe in this day and age people still question the fact that non-whites commit much more crimes than whites. It is insanity to keep choosing that which is bad!

Everyone knows what needs to be done, and how to do it, but the reason _why_ is totally taboo.

All proposed tax increases and improvements to infrastructure are always voted down–because everybody knows that you can’t keep anything good without sharing it with “others”.–so you are better off not to have anything good to lure the “others” to the town.

You are correct. The city of Eastpointe, (formerly East Detroit) had one of the top-rated school districts in the state.
With the influx of “diversity”, it is now one of the worst school districts in the state.
Just recently, in Eastpointe and the adjacent community of Roseville, incidents of violence committed by “diversity” are now commonplace.
Attempts to keep a lid on “diversity” is met with cries of “racism”…

As to the politicians who run Columbiana, Ohio, they should be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail.

As of 2014 an estimated total of over 900 streets are named after King in 41 states, DC and Puerto Rico. Scroll down the Wiki page and you’ll see that plenty of foreign countries have jumped on the bandwagon too.

As a former suburban liberal who has “never known anyone robbed, raped, beat up,” I have also wonder how I could have been “so out of touch with reality.”

    Some thoughts:

    1. (don’t laugh) I was a great fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, ie “dem bums.” They were losers for years, perennial underdogs, until they weren’t. Way back then, many Americans had sympathy for the underdogs, for the common man.

    2. my family were lapsed Methodists. Methodists believe strongly in “good behavior” and “kindness.” Supporting the oppressed was (is?) the “good” and “kind’ thing to do.

    3. except for one Catholic family on our block, growing up I never knew anyone who wasn’t white Protestant (active or lapsed). It never occurred to me that not all people behaved as my family and friends thought people should. Don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t bully. As for robbery or rape or assaults, they were unthinkable.

    4. although we tended to prefer people like ourselves, we never thought of (realized?) others as our enemies.

    5. I, and many like me, are helpless against those who think (know?) that lying, cheating, and bullying is the way to go. We never dreamed we were an oddball minority, and that what we considered our good points would be used to destroy us. We were, and still are, victims of White Privilege.

The Columbiana taxpayers should chip in to send Lance Willard and the other town fathers on an all expenses paid safari to Youngstown. For the full experience, the deluxe safari should include a midnight flashlight and camera tour of the exotic sites. Highlights of the trip could be shown on local TV. I predict a ratings winner.

“White Privilege”- a phrase that means because your white dad knocked up your white mom, you had an easy life and owe every black something.

Never mind what your life was ACTUALLY like, you owe them. It is called “wealth inequality” and it is just another buzzword used to break down the capitalist, freethinking walls whitey tends to build.

They call it white privilege because they know they cannot compete on a level, aka EQUAL, play field. They can only exist with an advantage.

So, give them yer $h!t white boy. And share your white wife too.

Can you imagine if the industrial revolution hit the south earlier and there was no civil war? Blacks would have migrated to Mexico. We could have built a wall and kept the numbers really low.

  73. If they want to diversify and not spend a lot of money on it, here’s my suggestions:

Well-lit all-night basketball courts should be set up.

Popeyes franchise. McDonalds franchise. IHOP franchise for breakfast.

Increase ‘bodega’ style storefronts that sell cheap liquor, grape drink, lottery tickets and ‘loosie’ cigarettes.

    And skittles for the kids.

Decrease police patrols and give standing orders not to engage protester/rioter/flash mobsters.

Alter what is considered a ‘crime’ in your jurisdiction. Pick the ones you seek to increase and raise your tolerance.

Anyone else care to join in?

Harvey Firestone, BTW, was the rubber and tire guy – definitely not a nice one.

The Firestones made their fortunes by climbing a ladder of hard work, from a farm in Columbiana– a remnant of which still exists there where Firestone hybrid corn is a specialty, but the homestead has been moved to Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village — to early buggy work, to tires for buggies, to tires in a big way.

“Firestone, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison were generally considered the three leaders in American industry at the time, and often worked and vacationed together.[7] All three were part of a very exclusive group titled “The Millionaires’ Club”.

The main library of Princeton University is named Firestone Library in his honor. It is among the largest university libraries in the world. On August 3, 1950, the Harvey S Firestone Memorial, a large sculpture ensemble dedicated to Firestone, created by sculptors James Earle Fraser and Donald De Lue was dedicated. It is located at Bridgestone Firestone Inc., 1200 Firestone Parkway in Akron, Ohio. In 1974, Firestone was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame. Firestone High School in Akron, Ohio, is named in his honor. There is a Harvey S Firestone Park in Columbiana, Ohio. The town Harbel in Liberia, home to Firestone’s rubber plantation, the largest in the world, is named after Firestone and his wife Idabelle.”

Not sure where you got your demographics on Readers Digest magazine.
My family and nearly everyone in my immigrant, Catholic, steel town neighborhood subscribed and kept the latest year in the living room, stacks of them in the basement. Someone, don’t remember who, wrote a novel in which stacks of Readers Digests in the basement were how the kid got in the house and saw his mother in flagrante dilecto with the parson.

Re-Affirming Fair Housing Act vouchers have altered the demographics where I live in just two and a half years. Apartment complexes that have had units priced at $750 to $1,000 per month are now infested with blacks. The one rental house near mine that was advertized at $2,000/ month was reduced to $1,800 after it remained vacant for 3 months. A black pastor and his wife moved into it along with their large Afro AME-labeled church van. He walks around the block at 5:30PM rush hour making sure that we all see his black face parading in front the larger and more expensive houses that have small white children playing in the yards. No doubt a diversity voucher made it possible.

There have a been a few shootings this year at the apartment complexes a mile or two away, one resulting in a black-on-black homicide, which is always a good outcome. Break-ins in the vicinity have increased from being a rarity to now occurring with some frequency in my vicinity. I am sure there are others as the police told a neighbor that there is more crime property going on than you think. One of the nearby grocery stores had to close one of its two entrances for a few days this summer due to blacks stealing meat- a heretofore unknown event.

Hail, brilliant catch, sir. The real story here is Lance Willard, whom I’ve never met, and his ambition.

I live a half-hour north of Columbiana. Comfortable farm town, with more recent growth coming from people fleeing Youngstown’s deteriorating southern suburb, and those working in Pittsburgh’s northern suburbs. Good schools. Whiteopian.

What the energetic Lance Willard seems to be talking about is plain old development–residential, retail, some light industrial, the usual stuff. He conceals it well beneath those big city tropes about “diversity” and “inclusiveness”, which I gather are meant to assuage virtue-signaling Whites anxious about being newcomers in someone else’s small town. Plenty of development in and around Columbiana as I’ve learned while doing the back-and-forth from Pittsburgh’s airport.

I wish Mr. Willard well. But, some of that talk about hipsters and yuppies breaking bread together is truly and very laughably bullshitty.
