Previously on SBPDL: In Nearly 90% Black Jackson, Mississippi, White People Still Blamed for Post-Apocalyptic Conditions of the City

Jackson, Mississippi, the capital city of the state, is nearly 90 percent black. It is completely dominated by black elected/appointed officials. And though AMC/Regal Cinemas are closed nationwide due to the Coronavirus pandemic/shutdown, the city hasn’t had an open movie theater in decades, a reminder of the Visible Hand of Black Economics.

And now… [Suit Challenges Mississippi Mayor’s Open Gun Ban Amid Virus, Jackson Free Press, April 29, 2020]:

A Republican state lawmaker filed a lawsuit Tuesday challenging a Democratic mayor’s temporary ban on the open carry of guns in Mississippi’s capital city during part of the coronavirus pandemic.

The city of Jackson and Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba “exploited the present public health crisis” to limit people’s Second Amendment right to carry firearms for self-defense, says the federal lawsuit by state Rep. Dana Criswell of Olive Branch.

Lumumba signed an executive order Saturday banning the open carry of guns in Jackson during the final days of his coronavirus stay-at-home order for the city. The stay-at-home order expires Thursday. Lumumba said in a video that two children in Jackson were killed within a week “due to senseless gun violence,” and Mississippi’s lax gun laws contributed to the problem.

“For too long, gun violence has plagued our city and disproportionately affected black and brown communities here in Jackson and nationwide,” said Lumumba, who is African American and leads a majority-black city.

Criswell, who is white and lives about 200 miles (322 kilometers) north of Jackson, does not mention race in the lawsuit. He is a licensed firearms dealer, according to the suit. Criswell said in a statement Tuesday: “The mayor’s attempt to disarm me and deny me the ability of self-defense puts me and my family in danger anytime we are in Jackson.”

Criswell is represented by the Mississippi Justice Institute, which is affiliated with a group that challenges many government regulations. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, a Republican, said in a letter to Lumumba on Sunday that people may openly carry guns in all parts of the state.

The dispute over the Jackson gun order follows other court challenges over constitutional rights during the COVID-19 pandemic. U.S. Attorney General William Barr intervened this month on behalf of a church in Greenville, Mississippi, that sued over that city’s order that limited drive-in worship services. Greenville altered its order to allow such services if people keep their windows rolled up.

The state Health Department said Tuesday that Mississippi had at least 6,342 confirmed cases and 239 deaths from the coronavirus as of Monday evening. That was an increase of 248 cases and 10 deaths from the previous day. The state’s population is about 3 million.

ORDER IT NOW

The number of infections is thought to be far higher because many people have not been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected with the virus without feeling sick. For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the highly contagious virus can cause severe symptoms and be fatal.

The Health Department said Tuesday at least 721 coronavirus cases had been confirmed at long-term care facilities such as nursing homes.

Mississippi is under a “safer at home” order issued by Republican Gov. Tate Reeves. It requires medically vulnerable people to remain at home and bans gatherings of 10 or more people. It also allows some businesses to reopen with limits on how many customers may be present, and it allows physicians to start offering some services that had been limited in recent weeks. Restaurants are still limited to carry-out or delivery.

Because too many black people (and brown) shoot each other in roughly 14 percent white Jackson, Mississippi, Second Amendment rights must be suspended during the Coronavirus lockdown.

Mississippi’s “lax gun laws” don’t contribute to the problem of black people shooting other black people in Jackson and across the state. The fault rests entirely in individual black people collectively being responsible for virtually all the gun violence in the state of Mississippi and capital city of Jackson.

But let’s blame white people and white gun-owners. It’s so much easier.

For an interesting read, I urge all to google the mayor's name. I've been reading about him and his father (of I think the same name) for years, when I lived in neighboring Louisiana. As Jackson got to be majority black, the father, who was one serious black supremacist (and was NEVER called out on it by the media) stated that his main goal if elected mayor of Jackson, was to rename Jackson, "New Africa", cordon it off, and have a black republic. I kid you not. He was elected, but died before he could try to make it happen. The son is much like the father and has absolutely ruined Jackson. Avoid Mississipi like the plague; it's nothing but one big speed trap, anyway (as I can attest!).

The mayor's father was born Edwin Finley Taliaferro in Detroit, Michigan. He changed his first name to Chokwe after the Chokwe people, an ethnic group in Central Africa, and his last name to Lumumba after Patrice Lumumba, deified assassinated leader of the Congo. I had to look this guy up on Wikipedia, but Lumumba is one of the most common name changes in the 1960's as far as I can remember.

The Black Nationalist and Black Separatist movements were big news in the 1960's, but kind of petered out in the 1970's. I don't think many people thought their goals were attainable, and by that time Affirmative Action was opening up lots of fields for educated black people who might have served as leaders.

Anyone in their 60's would recognize Lumumba as a name-change.

  2. Definitely not American – but as we’ve all had pounded into our heads ad infinitum, DIOS – or something like that….

  3. I have a solution to make everyone happy I believe.
Have Mayor Chokwe ban open carry for black people but allow white people, who are the most at risk living in that shitbag state, to carry guns.
It’s a win win. Theoretically, blacks stop shooting each other (that will never happen) and whitey is protected .

  4. Why would there be any whites in Jackson to care? Let them have the ban and show its futility.

  5. my big question is how is it possible the 18% white population of jackson mississippi can tolerate the 89% black population —

  6. How could a white man like Gov. Tate Reeves sign an order like “safer at home” which eviscerates traditional Anglo-Saxon freedoms? Face it, our problems are greater than the Lumumbas of the world. The white substratum is substantially corrupted….

  7. “gun violence has disproportionally affected black and brown communities”
Yep. All the innocent dindu nuffins are just sitting at home or walking down the street minding their own business when suddenly a magical gun appears out of nowhere and starts blasting away at them for no reason whatsoever. Those guns are just flyin’ around looking for someone to attack and you have to really watch out as there might be one lurking in a bush or sitting in the top of a tree just waiting for a poor, innocent negro to wander by. They’ll even fly in through open windows to get at a poor, unsuspecting black person. It’s noticeably worse during warm weather too so you got to be really careful.

It ain’t us! It’s dem guns!

  12. When firearms are outlawed only the outlaws will have firearms. I doubt there will be any effect on the rate of gun violence in Jackson, since those doing the shooting are lawbreakers by definition. And they do not respect any laws. Sad for those law abiding citizens who want to protect themselves and their families, but they should not be setting foot in that pitiful city anyway.

Maybe she has an older daughter; many black women end up caring for the kids of their own irresponsible children -- my mother was the last of eleven children -- she had older sisters in their late teens and early twenties who were already married and had their own children when my mother was born -- so my mother was an aunt to these children, who were older than her -- something like that is possible -- of course it's also possible the "1-year-old grandson" is the child of her '14-year-old daughter' (which you imply) -- but Blacks also have the highest rates of abortion (in general, approx 35% of abortions are performed on black females) -- and you'd normally think that a pregnant 13 y/o would be a candidate for an abortion -- anyway, without more info it is impossible to know for sure.

  22. I think that the issue is to protect black and brown people from guns. If white people shot a negro or Mexican in a robbery in that last 6 months, Mayor Limpopo Ouagadougou Jemima of Jackson, Ms., might have a point to pick with white people. However, where is all the gun violence of whites against blacks or Mexicans? Because there is none, why is he including whites with a black problem?

70% of black kids are born out of wedlock, which is (yet another) problem in the "black community" (you know you're being bullshitted when you see that phrase), since among other things single motherhood is the most reliable indicator of poverty and dependence on government benefits -- but that's not "the" problem 'Female in FL' was referring to/hinting at.

And I have no idea, nor do you, whether there is a "male head of household" there or not (probably not; but again in this case there is not enuf info to say, and even "probably not" isn't really supported by the data) -- maybe the reporter just interviewed/talked to Anita Chapman, and wrote the story from her/that perspective.

Like I said before: there are enough problems in the "black community" to focus on (not to mention media hypocrisy about all of it) without maliciously assuming the worst about some particular Black mentioned in a news story.
