Here’s something you might not expect to hear from a reporter: stop covering “breaking” news — at least when it comes to crime.
That was one of the most striking takeaways from Friday’s Shift the Narrative panel. Sponsored by the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists, the Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting, and Firelight Media, the virtual conversation centered on a question that’s asked a lot in Philly: How can journalists cover gun violence in ways that rebuild community trust — and don’t retraumatize survivors?
Last month, West Philly and Kensington residents told Billy Penn that constant coverage of individual shootings and a climbing homicide rate not only breeds disillusionment, but also ignores grassroots anti-violence efforts.
These blindspots make sense. Eyewitness and Action News broadcast formats emerged in Philadelphia as a way to make news profitable, with an overemphasis on crime that padded network pockets but isolated Black viewers.
Moderated by PABJ President and Philadelphia magazine editor-at-large Ernest Owens, the conversation asked researchers, community leaders, and journalists to consider the limits of standard crime coverage as gun violence continues to impact households indiscriminately.
More than 500 shootings have occurred since the start of 2022, which is slightly down from last year’s record pace, but still much higher than before the pandemic. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw recently said PPD officers can’t keep up with the pace of violence.
Panelists included Philadelphia Sun reporter Denise Clay-Murray and Temple University Hospital trauma surgeon-slash-gun violence researcher Jessica Beard, alongside the founders of three local anti-violence nonprofits: Philly Truce, Mothers in Charge, and the Young Chances Foundation.
Conclusions? Journalists need to stop framing coverage around individual shootings and start forging relationships with neighborhoods that don’t center on an information transaction.
rauma surgeon and researcher Beard, whose recent research analyzed local news coverage of gun violence incidents, pointed to episodic framing as the media’s biggest obstacle.
You can think of episodic frames as the journalist’s equivalent to a season of “Law and Order: SVU,” where each individual episode focuses on solving a specific crime, with little overarching narrative.
For reporters, episodic crime coverage means focusing on each incident individually without acknowledging the context: what caused the conflict, what resources the neighborhood has, and how victims or bystanders might describe things differently than police. It’s the default format for local outlets trying to break news fast, but Beard argued that it misinforms readers and viewers.
ORDER IT NOW“I don’t see a lot of value in episodic reports,” she told the panel. “If you constantly consume episodic coverage on firearm injury, [for example] you’re always going to be thinking of it as a crime problem. You won’t know what the solutions are … or what to ask of elected officials.”
How might reporters fix this? With a focus on systemic issues — and a new definition of breaking news.
“I don’t think two guys getting into an argument on the corner of 19th and Lehigh and shooting at each other is breaking news,” said longtime journalist Clay-Murray.
Across the board, panelists advocated for renewed focus on the determinants of crime, like neighborhood disinvestment, food insecurity, and lack of economic opportunity.
Don’t assume people like talking with reporters
With traditional “breaking news” coverage, conversations with reporters can easily turn transactional. The job of a reporter is to extract the information necessary for a story, which can often mean disregarding some pretty flagrant context: that someone’s child just died, a family is grieving under stress, and opening up can be stressful.
And sometimes, that information is sensationalized — meeting the needs of a newsroom, maybe, but not necessarily the needs of a community. Panelist Tyrique Glasgow, who founded the Young Chances Foundations, pointed out that showing crime footage might grab eyeballs on the news, but it could also encourage copycat acts.
“Soon, it becomes a competition to see who can become the next headline,” said Glasgow.
To erode that power imbalance, Clay-Murray and Mothers in Charge national director Dorothy Johnson-Speight offered tips for reporters on how to build relationships with communities that might be distrustful of media intentions.
For starters: Don’t assume everyone likes speaking with journalists.
“Recognize that you’re going into a situation where you have someone who may not want to talk to you and not force the issue,” said Clay-Murray, who recommended dropping notions of deadlines and editorial demands from the conversation.
Meanwhile, Johnson-Speight stressed the notion of creating enduring relationships. Reporters should coexist in these communities when good news happens — or even without any “news” at all. That breeds trust, she said, because it demonstrates a good-faith interest in marginalized communities beyond the headlines.
And sometimes, journalists might have to accept when too much damage has been done and try to rebuild a wholly new relationship, said moderator Ernest Owens.
“You can change the reporters, but not the community’s opinion of the publication.”
If Philadelphia were 100 percent white, would we see anyone advocating for the end of breaking news segments on gun violence? No. Because there would be virtually no gun violence in the city.
In a city where almost every fatal/non-fatal shooting is committed by blacks (or BIPOCs), this is what you get: black journalists begging for an end to individual news reports on black homicide and black non-fatal shootings.

In the city I live in shooting incidents involving blacks are daily events.
Press reporting is important- readers google map the shooting location, in essence tracking an expanding troublesome demographic and a hint to timing for the planned Move Out.
Unfortunately, about the only way the police can make an arrest in these shootings ( many are never solved) is to show the video of the incident in the hope that a $1000 reward will get someone to call the crime stopper hot line and squeal on the shooter.
The irony is just just too delicious not laugh completely out loud at this. According to the talking heads, everything, absolutely everything negative that “happens” to these things isn’t their fault, yet they still cannot figure out why they kill each other at almost genocidal rates. The insanity that they want the media to disinfect it’s viewers from the information about their abhorrent behavior is all anyone needs to know about what we’re dealing with.
The counterpart of this is that on the exceedingly rare occasion when a white shoots a black it *MUST* be given absolute, saturation, wall to wall, national media, TV etc coverage to the maximum possible extent.

Living near Rockford, Il it’s the usual thing around here that the first 10 minutes of the news is about negro violence. Teen shot, carjacking, armed robbery, shots fired and the victims/offenders are the usual suspects, negroes. A formerly nice mall at the south end of the city in Cherry Valley was the scene of a murder this weekend. Negro kills negro after arguement in the mall spilled out into the parking lot. There has been incident after incident and the mall is losing many of the shops all because of negroes shooting each other over being disrespected. The place is dying a slow death because it’s not a safe place to go, especially in the evening, and customers are avoiding it like the plague. The negro destroys everything they come in contact with.
The answer to this conundrum is plain – if certain black activities were no longer a “crime”, they would no longer be reported so as to embarrass joggers everywhere.
Moreover, decriminalizing most blactions would achieve an equitable outcome (at zero cost), as reporting of Whitey’s crimes would be significantly greater in proportion to the reporting of black crime.
I was listening to one of the Always Sunny podcasts and the main creator, who is from Philadelphia, mentioned once discovering a man’s body as a teenager who had been shot in the head with his brains all over the place.
They also mentioned being very edgy and uncomfortable on some of the rare on-location shoots. (It’s almost entirely filmed in LA)
Like I’ve said a thousand times- with blacks, image is everything, substance is nothing. What’s upsetting them the most is that they’re being “made to look bad” which in whitespeak translates as “revealing the truth of what they’re like.” They can’t stand being shown up for what they are as it destroys the fake image they want to present. Is it really breaking news when you have so many shootings that it barely qualifies as news anyway.
They should run reports showing the change in crime levels as the black population increased in the various neighborhoods. Show what those areas were like when they were built and still full of racist whites, Italians, Jews, whatever. Explain how the areas changed with the blacks taking over, the deterioration of schools, loss of businesses, increases in crime, more deterioration of properties, loss of property values, etc. They could do this in little human interest stories even, showing how some favorite old Italian restaurant closed and left due to the changes, or some old furniture store, whatever. They could try to get at least some blacks to understand they are the problem, not whites.
This is exactly why liberals and pigs began reporting this threat as “gun violence” in the first place. To create the phony impression that somebody besides ghetto blacks might be behind this extraordinary rate of shootings!

The Sacramento Police Department said it
arrested 26-year-old Dandrae Martin
and charged him with assault and illegal firearm possession following an overnight investigation. Police described him as a “related suspect,” but did not offer any additional detail about his alleged involvement.
Police previously said at least two people opened fire in the downtown district as people streamed out of closing bars. Video showed people on the scene sprinting away from the gunfire. Sacramento police said preliminary processing of the scene indicated that at least three buildings and three vehicles had been hit by gunfire, and more than 100 shell casings were recovered from the area.

Be careful what you wish for. “Context” for these people means having enough room to explain away criminal acts, and enough influence to ensure that the explanation fits their narrative.
If reporters were somehow encouraged to provide real context, patterns of behavior would become obvious even to media consumers… and then these same people would demand that reporters only cover isolated incidents without adding any ‘prejudicial’ context.
When Hunter S. Thompson cultivated a relationship with the Hell’s Angels, he was able to humanize them and puncture many myths and stereotypes in the process. AS WE all know by know, 12% of the total pop accounts for over half the country’s total homicides. What many DON’T seem to know is that stratospheric rates of black violence are all but global.
The American black murder rate may seem sky-high–and at 20ish per 100,000 in population it is, compared to the Euroamerican rate of about 2.5 per 100k–but NOT compared to South Africa’s 34 or Jamaca’s 57. Brazil, with the largest black pop outside Africa (90 mill), sees about 60,000 homicides a year, overwhelmingly black on black.
Even the less violent black lands see rates of violence unheard of in Eurasia. To put the matter into perspective, consider the murder rate of my country of Italy. Though in its South this European country has three major crime syndicates–the Mafia in Sicily, the ‘Ndrangheta in Calabria, and the Camorra in Naples–Italy’s overall murder rate is less than one per 100k. And some other European countries have even lower rates; Asian countries even lower: Japan’s rate, if my memory serves, is 0.3 per 100k.
In other words, let blacks into your land and you’ll have ever so much more trouble, and violence is but one of the varieties.
