Thanksgiving or Christmas, pick one:  The Puritans are the root of American degeneracy, the forebears of the Abolitionists and of modern liberals, and the origin of the War on Christmas.  (Image:  Frontispiece to The Vindication of Christmas, by John Taylor (1652).)

For the subtitle, and for the general inspiration, I give thanks to the magnificent Revilo P. Oliver.[1]I much appreciate how Professor Oliver sometimes tucked key points, insightful tangents, and even lengthy obiter dictum expositions into his footnotes.  I myself have always done similarly.

In “The only problem that Americans need now urgently to consider is what their War Lord intends to do to them,” Liberty Bell, October 1990, pp. 12f., he wrote:

Bushy has started a war without even politely asking permission from the Five Hundred Thieves in the Capitol whom the Jews describe as the best Congress their money can buy.  Such courtesy was really unnecessary, since Bushy and the Congress serve the same masters, but it would have pleased his subjects.  Of course, no one even thought of suggesting that the taxpaying animals should be consulted as to whether they were eager to be killed and taxed for the glory of their War Lord.

As I write, preparations are being made for a massive attack on Iraq

Americans are beginning to perceive the importance of the change in the cast of the show in Washington.  Ronnie was a stupid old galoot, who probably did believe in astrology, Armageddon, and similar nonsense, and who could perform in simple rôles under a competent director, but he was indolent and lazy, doing only what he was told to do.  Bushy, who looks and sounds like a Puritan,¹⁹ is highly intelligent, madly ambitious, and hyperactive.  Subject to permission from the Jewish satraps, he wants great exploits of his own to feed his ego.

Bushy, remember, was Director of the Criminal Intelligence Agency, not a post for a man who has scruples or likes Americans.  You cannot suppose that he would have the slightest compunction about afflicting his American subjects to the utmost.

——————————

19. I am told that some blabbermouth on the radio affirmed (plausibly enough) that Bush is descended (surely a long way!) from ancestors who arrived on the Mayflower.  That reminded me of an historical datum we liked to cite when I was in college:  “The Mayflower set sail from Portsmouth on 16 September 1620.  It was battered by violent storms on the Atlantic, but did not sink.  That was one of the great tragedies of the sea.”

He saw the essence of things.

On September 16, 1620, a small group of degenerate religious fanatics left noble Old Europe, where, despite the limited tolerance they had found in the Netherlands, they were generally unwelcome as agitators and antisocial renegades deadset on destabilizing and destroying traditional society.  Similar splinter-sects who stayed behind would soon roil England with proletarian revolution, regicide, and the full opening of England to Yahweh’s Chosen Parasites, who for three and a half centuries had been banned unless they suffered the indignity of having magic water sprinkled on their heads.

The Pilgrims were Separatist Puritans; and together with other Puritans who soon infested Massachusetts, they soon started the original War on Christmas.  For they correctly identified traditional European Christmas celebrations as un-Biblical and “pagan”.  The singing of Christmas carols, Christmas feasting, and the playing of sports (as was then traditional at Christmas) had snuck something Aryan into the schizophrenic cultural amalgam that is European Christianity.  According to the Puritans, Christmas was an ordinary workday, and the only proper way to celebrate the putative birth of Jesus was quietly to read the Bible and pray, without merriment or festivities.

The Puritans wanted to be purely Christian—Christian all the way, Christians par excellence.  They were wannabe-Jews, who oft gave their children ridiculous Hebraical names due to their obsession with the Old Testament; and behavior and worldview were Jewier than some actual Jews’.  Given their attitude, no wonder their clothing was eerily similar to that of the Chassidim.  They were hateful, and in full rebellion against the traditions of their European forefathers.

The Puritans banned Christmas as “Satanic”.  Public notice from Massachusetts, 1659.  The text, for those who have trouble with medial-s:  “Publick Notice: The Observation of Christmas having been deemed a Sacrilege, the exchanging of Gifts and Greetings, dressing in Fine Clothing, Feasting and similar Satanical Practices are hereby FORBIDDEN with the Offender liable to a Fine of FIVE SHILLINGS.”

On Christmas Day, 1621, Mayflower passenger William Bradford (who, as governor, referred to himself in the third person as “Gov”) cracked down with Biblical wrath on recent arrivals who tried to hold traditional Christmas festivities.  In 1659, the Massachusetts Bay Colony specifically banned people from taking off work for Christmas Day, and from Christmas feasts:

For preventing disorders arising in several places within this Jurisdiction, by reason of some still observing such Festivals,*as were Superstitiously kept in other Countries, to the great dishonour of God and offence of others;

It is therefore Ordered by this Court and the Authority thereof, that [*58] whosoever shall be found observing any such day as Christmas or the like,* either by forbearing labour, feasting, or any other way upon any such account as aforesaid, every such person so offending, shall pay for every such offence five shillings as a fine to the County.

Although most people miss the deeper cultural implications that I raise, the Puritans’ War on Christmas is sometimes mentioned in the mainstream media.  It is well-known to historians of the Christmas holiday, and to Massachusetts historians:

Although Christmas was widely celebrated in Europe as a Christian holiday marking the birth of Jesus Christ, puritans saw it as a false holiday with stronger ties to paganism than Christianity, and they were correct, according to the book The Battle for Christmas:

It was only in the fourth century that the Church officially decided to observe Christmas on December 25.  And this date was chosen not for religious reasons but simply because it happened to mark the approximate arrival of the winter solstice, an event that was celebrated long before the advent of Christianity.  The puritans were correct when they pointed out—and they pointed it out often—that Christmas was nothing but a pagan festival covered with a Christian veneer.  The Reverend Increase Mather of Boston, for example, accurately observed in 1687 that the early Christians who first observed the Nativity on December 25 did not do so “thinking that Christ was born in that month, but because the Heathens Saturnalia was at that time kept in Rome, and they were willing to have those Pagan holidays metamorphosed into Christian ones.”

[…]

After the puritans left Europe, they decided to leave these holiday traditions behind. Instead of feasting and giving gifts, puritans commemorated Christmas by praying, reflecting on sin and working instead of resting.

The puritans even forced non-puritan colonists, such as the Anglicans, to work on Christmas day.

Whereupon I look philosophically and culturally to those deeper implications that most others miss.

Crackpots and insane fanatics tend to swing wildly between superficially opposite extremes.  Redouble this for their descendants, who rebel with equal unnaturalness against the unnatural strictures of their ancestors.  They form an unhealthy culture, which spreads the same essential crackpot fanaticism to others.  And by the law of cultural residues, the fanaticism and its basic obsessions remain long after the initial doctrines have been discarded, or have mutated beyond recognition.  I have oft remarked on the general connection between Christianity and liberalism; and I have specifically associated the Puritans with liberalism.

The offspring of the Puritans, the seed of the Mayflower, and of their New England cultural obsession with religious ferments spawned all manner of idiocy ranging from Unitarianism, to Transcendentalism, to Unitarian Universalism.  A virulently mutating Massachusetts absorbed a notion originated by another group of religious nutcases, the Quakers of Pennsylvania, and became the epicenter of the New England Abolitionists, whose self-righteous hatred of the culturally superior American South was a psychological redirection of the Puritan rebellion against Old Europe.  The cultural legacy of those who declared traditional Christmas “Satanical” was to wage holy war, based on changed concepts of what was sinful.  As their sickness infected all American culture, it brought America to invade Europe twice; and Puritanical America is a nation of hate to this day, as seen, for instance, in America’s wrecking of the Middle East,[2]Cf. Note 1. and the American agitation against Russia and China.  The one constant of their kind is an obsession with moralizing to others, and with remodelling the universe to suit a fantasy.

Most people are unable to see the cultural connection between the Puritans and the far-left liberals, for a most superficial reason:  The Puritans hated sex, whereas the liberals love sex as long as it is perverse, degenerate, disgusting, ugly, sterile (unless it involves miscegenation), and preferably non-heterosexual—which is just another way of hating sex; for there is no more effective way to destroy a thing than to defile it.  Those who cannot see this are blinded by their own puritanical attitudes—on either of the “conservative” or “liberal” sides.  I myself have no such inhibitions.  I look to first principles.  According thereto, it is perfectly logical, and perhaps even historically inevitable that the Massachusetts of the Puritans was the first U.S. state to “legalize” same-sex “marriage”.  And I find it entirely unsurprising that modern liberals and “Social Justice Warriors” are known for their puritanical “virtue-signalling”, their scrupulosity, their obsession with anti-natural rules that repudiate the conditions of healthy life on Earth.

And ultimately, the Puritans’ War on Christmas has succeeded by other means.  Their essential neurosis spawned a crass and ruthless mercantile culture; this, and their forcing people to work on Christmas Day, have segued into the commercialization of Christmas as an extended shopping spree.  —for there is no more effective way to destroy a thing than to defile it.  It is no mere accident that in America, the Land of the Puritans, “Thanksgiving” and “Christmas” now bracket the “holiday shopping season”, the distilled essence of which is that most American of all holidays:  Black Friday.  From one error of banning gift-giving on Christmas, those paragons of the Yankee spirit have leapt to the equal and opposite error of making the “holiday” all about gift-giving—cheapening it for money, the more to make people buy, buy, buy!

The logical end of Puritanism:  The American Holiday \\$pirit.
The logical end of Puritanism:  The American Holiday \$pirit.

Is there any more effective to defile, despoil, and destroy the spirit of Old World European Christmas, than by replacing heartfelt community festivities with useless consumer junk?  It is a modern tradition suitable for Puritanical American turkeys.

Turkey

Photo:  A stereotypical American.  From “Symbols of the Great Seal”, U.S. State Department (PDF), under the heading:  “The Eagle or the Turkey: Benjamin Franklin’s Thoughts on the National Bird”.  So, the turkey was almost the official symbol of America—as well it ought have been!  Leave the eagle to the Germans!

Needless to say, I despise Jewish saviors who are as real as Santa Claus; accordingly, I do not care about people saying “Merry Christmas!” to each other.  Nevertheless, I am protective of the spirit and the deeper traditions that people associate with the Christmas holiday.  As the Puritans correctly declared, so-called “Christmas” is the surviving embodiment of older, wiser holiday traditions from cultures across Europe, superficially dressed up in Christian clothes.

Something worth celebrating—and a proper eagle seal.
Something worth celebrating—and a proper eagle seal.

I love to see Aryans decorating pine trees, lighting candles and Yule logs, singing, dancing, feasting, drinking, and making merry as families and communities.  Say, “No, thanks—no thanks!” to the Puritans, and to the American “Thanksgiving” which was also culturally misappropriated in their damned memory from a much older holiday.  Reject liberalism.  Say Yea to life.  Embrace what the Puritans and liberals have always hated. ®

Forget Jewish myths.  This is a European tradition; as the Puritans knew, it has nothing to do with the Bible or with Jesus ben Yahweh.  “Christmas” is a “Nazi” holiday.

  1. Come to think about it yes, everything hateful about America can be traced
to the Puritans, and there is something distinctly satisfying about seeing
these hemorrhoids kicked in the self-righteousness.
Abolitionism, at least in the South and West, was a German-Lutheran
thingy (of course the John Brown Style prevailed, and is still very much with us).
    – Brandenburg became great from the Huguenots, the Protestants expelled
by the Habsburgs cultured much of Eastern Europe, even fugitive Jews were
a force for good elsewhere (say, Carl Schurz); the pattern is clear.

So what makes the Puritans so abjectly toxic?
Genes? Book? Sense of Chosenness? (Nah, or the Druze would be the biggest assholes)

  2. Great history lesson, Ratchets. Concur all as regards the Bushes and their fealty to the (((other))).

Interesting thought: leftism is as much or more a product of Judaized WASPs as it is the Askenazi.

Serious question not a troll. How many Germanic children has Raches sired and has Raches found a virtuous and loyal Germanic wife?

BTW there is a strong case to be made that Dec 25th was calculated as being exactly 9 months after the assumed conception of Christ, the tradition being that great prophets were conceived and died on the same date. There is also evidence that the Romans feast date on Dec 25th was added in response to what Christians were already celebrating.

Article edited with some trivial adjustments to formatting, and to add a telling historical juxtaposition that amuses me much as it sickens me.  I had this in mind, but it slipped in my haste:

I look to first principles.  According thereto, it is perfectly logical, and perhaps even historically inevitable that the Massachusetts of the Puritans was the first U.S. state to “legalize” same-sex “marriage”.

I should have elaborated on Puritanism as the cause of the English Civil War—which, in my opinion, poisoned the well of English culture, and sowed the cultural and political seeds that led eventually to Lord Bryce’s lie-factory in WWI and the English strategy of firebombing German civilians in WWII—just as I connected American Puritanism to the Northern war of aggression against the South, American invasions of Europe in WWI and WWII, American invasions of Iraq, and today’s American warmongering against Russia and China.

I should also have elaborated on Theodore Parker (I did mention the Transcendentalists, but many readers may not know the significance), and on the firebrand Christian Abolitionist preachers who whipped up a religious fervor against the South.

But if I were to cover all of these points adequately, it would be a book, not a blog article; and it would be done by merry Yuletide (of some future year).

The simpleminded may try to raise theological objections.  But this is not an article about theology:  I speak of culture, psychology, and the historical movements of societies.  To elaborate may require my own sequel to The Genealogy of Morals. ®

The average Puritan woman had 9 children, so I don’t think they hated sex, they just didn’t make it the center of their lives like many moderns do, and ancients did. I think I’d take 9 children sized White families, even with eccentric religious views, if it strengthened and grew the White nation.

The singing of Christmas carols… had snuck something Aryan into the schizophrenic cultural amalgam that is European Christianity.

I was disheartened when I first read… the Mṛcchakaṭikā…I found that conclusion nauseating. It was, for me, a miserable end to a beautiful, otherwise exquisitely non-Christian story that I had thoroughly enjoyed. What the hell is wrong with Aryans? No wonder they went for that “turn the other cheek” liberalism.

Are today’s westerners Aryan? Can that be said, and is it meaningful? Is there really any spiritual/cultural/behavioral link between moderns and what we understand anent ancient Aryans? Or is it simply wishful thinking? I am not being a crank, but sincerely asking.

However it is, Sudraka’s story was evidently written under the influence of a sentimental Buddhism (contrast Evola’s Doctrine of Awakening). I have read that the play’s author was of the warrior caste, and a devotee of Shiva; seemingly odd to play’s ending. However some claim Shiva to be merciful. Compare Krishna’s, instructions to Arjuna, how to treat one’s enemies, even when they are relatives.

  7. @Raches

In the War of Northern Aggression as well as the two European campaigns
the demand for unconditional surrender (unheard of since the Thirty Years´War
    except for pirates) was the Puritan giveaway;
it put an end to the Laws of Warfare (insofar as this is not an oxymoron).

But as they conjured up theological rationalizations for raping, exploiting and
genociding whatsoever under the sun, why did they single out Slabbery ™ ?

  8. Wyatt says:

Huh. Sounds like the Ashkenazis. Cohencidence?

  9. Cking says:

Great historical article here. Elaborating on the United States’ aggression in South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East is very important to our survival. Yes, an always unrecognized fact and reality, WWI and WWII were organized, out of the creation of the Federal Reserve Bank, to destroy the German nation-state and the German people for the British Imperial system’s profit while simultaneously and most definitely destroying European, Catholic founded, Western Civilization. It’s why President Wilson was despised, insulted to his face, by the European elites and returned home a guilt broken man. Certainly recognizable today in the disaster waiting to happen, that is EU governed Europe making ready a war with now Christian Russia.

The Catholic Church, faith, and institution was Europe’s existential system, more so than any great king, queen, or empire. The Church was always there for Europe to pick up the pieces, one folly, one tragedy, after another. At one time it could have been America’s existential system but the Puritans prefer unlimited bailouts for Wall St. and the dispossession and replacement of the European American; strange. The Church could not possibly be replaced by a British Liberal-Whig system of trade based on Central Banker issued, paper money, usury, speculation, and perpetual war.

The US builds war bases all around Russia. Russia is ready to take back Ukraine, at least the Donbass, but what of it? There is no national security threat to the United States no matter Russia or Ukraine’s government. And I’m sure Europe will not benefit from war one iota, but in ruin, will be overrun by the historical Islamic power; another forgotten perpetual offensive on Europe. But no, we’re still under the Puritan, President Bush ‘Spreading Democracy Policy’. And that, my fellow Americans, is the actual national security crisis today. Spreading Democracy all over the world is a massive, expensive, bloody, undertaking, demanding sacrifices we cannot now perceive, that realistically is not our cross to carry.

  10. @BCB232

I thought of that as well.

Winter Traditions have always existed, but the Saturnalia most likely came after the Christian Christmas.

  11. martin_2 says:

The Puritans did not hate sex. Obviously they believed in sex only after marriage, but people like Milton fully comprehended the need to propagate the species, for the greater glory of God I suppose. I believe there is a passage in “Paradise Lost” where he writes about the sanctity of sexual congress between husband and wife.

I am English and I am immensely proud of my ancestors who went to America and settled there. We should do Thanksgiving in the UK too. (We do that stupid American Halloween bollocks now.) Us Anglo Saxons should be shouting about the settling of America and all the good things that have come out of it from the rooftops. The idea we should feel guilty is absurd. I am enormously respectful of the Red Indians, (having got my ideas about them from 1950’s Westerns), but they were defeated by my tribe and that’s all there is to it. What replaced the Red Indian lifestyle is far better anyway although I dare say they could eat a healthier diet, but thet’s their choice. No-one is forcing them to eat the SAD and drink too much booze.

  12. songbird says:

I have often wondered what Lothrop Stoddard’s local Unitarian church was like.

And wasn’t Nixon a Quaker? (He’s seems to have been at least semi-based.)

Though perhaps, the exception proves the rule.

  13. I don’t know why people have the impression that the Puritans hated sex. They took seriously the injunction, “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” There is record of a church member being brought under church discipline for depriving his spouse of marital relations.

Many misconceptions of Puritan theology and practice abound. I highly recommend J.I. Packers’s A Quest for Godliness, The Puritan Vision of the Christian Life.
