The Covid-19 pandemic has brought out many disturbing features of our society. Misinformation, or perhaps more accurately, disinformation, abounds in the service of agendas ranging from those who interpret the virus as a useful ploy for the construction of a police state, to Big Pharma and its allies who are moving us toward mass vaccinations, to the narcissistic views of those who would sacrifice the elderly and ill rather than to be inconvenienced by being denied access to bars and beaches. Every aspect of the pandemic, including Trump’s own use of HCQ, is being used against the President of the United States. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2020/05/20/mcenany_media_mocks_trump_for_taking_hydroxychloroquine_doesnt_criticize_chris_cuomo_for_taking_less_safe_version.html?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=mixi&utm_campaign=realclearpolitics

Despite proof of reinfections, some bleat on and on about how the “lockdown” prevented “herd immunity” and made us less safe. Others make the false claim that Sweden with no lockdown fared no worse than others. In fact Sweden’s economy was de facto locked down by the nonparticipation of Swedes who on their own used the same measures as in other countries, and Sweden still has a higher mortality rate, for which the government has apologized to the elderly. Still others dispute that the lockdown reduced the infection rate, while others claim any reduction in Covid deaths was offset by higher suicides caused by “lockdown depression.”

To put these claims in perspective: two months ago the US had 100 known Covid cases; today the US has 1.5 million. The difference is not accounted for by an increase in testing. The US has 100,000 deaths blamed on the virus—twice the deaths of US soldiers in the long Vietnam war. Some claim that the deaths were caused by preconditions, not by the virus—but the people didn’t die until they got the virus. Others point out that economic incentives cause an over-reporting of Covid deaths. There is little doubt about that, but over-reporting does not account for 100,000 deaths. It remains to be seen whether the reopening will result in a jump in infections and deaths.

At a time when accurate information is essential, the waters are instead muddied by disinformation in the service of political, ideological, and profit agendas. The irresponsibility of those putting their self-interests first is extraordinary. It indicates that the social bond between people that made America a country has been dissolved by greed, multiculturalism, and Identity Politics. America has become a country without a common interest. It is a narcissistic state.

This article is limited to the campaign against HCQ. HCQ—hydroxychloroquine—has been in use for 65 years for the prevention or treatment of malaria, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. It is officially labeled a safe drug. Many doctors treating Covid patients have found and reported HCQ, when used early enough together with zinc and the antibiotic azithromycin to be an effective and safe treatment.

I have reported and made available many of the reports of HCQ’s efficacy and safety. See for example:

https://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2020/04/11/professor-didier-raoult-releases-the-results-of-a-new-hydroxychloroquine-treatment-study-on-1061-patients/

https://www.paulcraigroberts.org/2020/05/06/why-was-an-effective-cure-for-covid-19-withheld/

Despite 65 years of safe use, HCQ is alleged to be dangerous and to cause heart attacks. Its use is officially approved only for “adolescent and adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19.” Generally, by the time a patient is hospitalized the virus has progressed to a later stage in which treatment is less successful. Studies of HCQ’s effectiveness, such as the VA one and apparently the more recent one reported in The Lancet, are limited to later stage hospitalized patients and seem to exclude the essential zinc component of the HCQ treatment. In other words, the studies seem to be designed to exclude from official approval the treatment that doctors have found most effective. It is not easy for a layperson to know what the studies actually say as the media report the studies in an anti-Trump manner. For the media, what is most important is criticism of Trump, not the effectiveness of a treatment.

In contrast, the untested investigational antiviral drug, Remdesivir, which has no record of safe use and is extraordinarily expensive compared to HCQ, has been given the same clearance for use. The media is not interested in the effectiveness and safety, or lack of, of this new and untested drug. Trump isn’t taking it, and it is a potential profit-maker for Big Pharma. If Remdesivir fails, the failure will be used to dispose of the hope for cures and to focus on vaccination.

It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that HCQ/zinc is being sidelined in order to clear the way for a profitable vaccine and a vaccination mandate. But the vaccines are not panning out. The Moderna vax touted by Bill Gates and Dr. Fauci caused severe illnesses in one-fifth of the test recipients.

The other fast-tracked vaccine developed by the Oxford Vaccine Group proved ineffective. The vaccine produced insufficient antibodies to prevent Covid-19 infection. https://groups.google.com/forum/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=footer#!msg/newsfromunderground/3JuCRrxBHHc/BzGQ-2S2AwAJ

It will be instructive to see what reopening brings. Bay county (Panama City Beach) and Walton county (Seaside, Rosemary Beach) quickly closed spring break and the beaches, restaurants, bars, vacation rental houses and condos, and non-essential businesses. Consequently, the two Florida counties had hardly any Covid cases. People were able to go about without masks as if there were no pandemic.

These two counties are blessed with “America’s most beautiful beaches,” and host millions of visitors. Panama City Beach has 13,975 permanent residents and 17 million annual visitors. http://www.pcbgov.com/about-us/about-the-community

With the reopening, tourists will be coming in from infected locations. If they bring the virus with them, the counties will find that the Covid-19 virus is real after all. Other locations spared by the lockdowns might find reopening brings the virus.

If so, and there is a second closedown, we will be led by fear and be vaccinated regardless of the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness against the virus. Did those protesting the closedown think about this?

    Dr PCR,

First and foremost, thank you for your decades long effort to ‘educate and mitigate’ us away from our disastrous trajectory. I have followed and read much of your writings, and I salute you sir….

As to this article, two comments:

    1. “The Lancet, are limited to later stage hospitalized patients and seem to exclude the essential zinc component of the HCQ treatment.”
Actually, it is much worse than that. It is a “backward looking” (i.e. not a scientifically designed forward study with control groups) study of tens of thousands of hospitalized patients from all over the world who were diagnosed with Covid-19, wherein they compared the mortality rates of those treated with HCQ and those not treated with it. What was (purposely) omitted it the reality that those who were treated in the “study’s” timeline (within 48 hours of Covid-19 confirmation) were clearly the MOST ILL PATIENTS as attending physicians worldwide felt compelled to try something for exactly this “study” group of patients and resorted to HCQ in attempt to save them. “Surprise”- this group had a mortality rate that was higher (of only about 35%) than those not treated – i.e those who weren’t or didn’t get as sick and didn’t require such measures. And intelligent people everywhere swallow this framed garbage…

    2. “The Moderna vax touted by Bill Gates and Dr. Fauci caused severe illnesses in one-fifth of the test recipients.”
Actually, that only relates to 3 participants (of 15) in the higher dose test of the three different dose level test groups in Moderna’s study of 45 people (15 in each dose level test group). As such the adverse effects were seen only in 3/45 of the test subjects, all of whom elicited an antibody production response at or greater that the serological levels achieved by confirmed and recovered Covid-19 patients.

HCQ had (some) efficacy against SARS. Whether it has efficacy against the novel virus is a work in progress. When the study population is elderly & already sick, scientific proofs are had to come by.

This army of improperly informed commentators on the issue is becoming unbearable for the sanity of our culture.

Has Moderna finally released their raw trial data? If so, do you have a link? Remember, no one has ever developed a successful coronavirus vaccine including for the common cold which is also a corona virus.

Scientific proofs are hard to come by when the media counter-factually continuously blares 24 hours a day that HCQ is going to kill you. More than one HCQ trial has been canceled due to the lack of test volunteers because of the hysteria the media has caused.

  5. I agree there’s something sinister about the coordinated hydroxychloroquine disinformation/smear campaign.

And here’s something else that bothers me about the whole thing. Pubmed is full of peer reviewed papers suggesting that a few low cost, low risk nutritional supplements might significantly reduce a person’s risk of severe COVID-19 disease. An example is vitamin D. Other examples are zinc, selenium (e.g. as selenium yeast) and vitamin C.

Going a little further, from looking at some of the early papers by Chinese authors, it seemed to me that vascular endothelial dysfunction was the common denominator that relates aging and the various comorbidities (diabetes, obesity, hypertension, etc.) to increased risk of severe COVID-19 disease.

And vascular endothelial dysfunction implies reduced nitric oxide bioavailability. So in theory any food, nutritional product or lifestyle changes (e.g. modest exercise) that would increase nitric oxide bioavailability might significantly reduce the risk of severe disease.

So if the “government” can recommend wearing masks, social distancing, frequent hand-washing, etc., why did it not (and does it still not) recommend a vitamin D supplement (and/or grape seed extract capsules, citrus bioflavonoids, L-citrulline, etc.)? It would be speculative but low cost and low risk with a significant potential benefit. What would’ve been the downside? When I think about it this way it seems that the “government” wants more casualties.

Did those protesting the closedown think about this?”…or did [are] those protesting the closedown all too well aware that we’re already being led by fear – which is the reason for the draconic closedowns. Indeed, the same people for the most part, who used fear to impose involuntary lockdowns are also the ones pushing for everyone eventually to be “vaccinated regardless of the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness.” The police state never rests. The Swedish example leaves it up to citizens to decide for themselves. “De facto” Sweden was as open as it was locked down, with minimal state coercion – a vital principle. And primary schools there stayed open safely, unlike the U.S. which should apologize to it’s youthful population for that. Many other European countries have fared much worse than Sweden thus far & the U.S. has a much higher cas rate per million. As the Swedish foreign minister reminded this week: “This is a marathon, not a sprint.” Sweden is staying the course.
“Some claim that the deaths were caused by preconditions, not by the virus—but the people didn’t die until they got the virus”…and most likely they wouldn’t have been done in without the preexisting conditions, even if they did get the Wuhan whatever. Did those in the fake news making false analogies with the Vietnam War think about this?

  8. … to the narcissistic views of those who would sacrifice the elderly and ill rather than to be inconvenienced by being denied access to bars and beaches.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, no matter how obnoxious it may be, like this one expressed by PCR.

How about putting the elderly and seriously infirm, the 1.7% of the population who are in Long-term Medical Care Facilities, out of harm’s way by adopting appropriate protocols, and let the other 98.3% of the population continue to live their lives? Sure, give them information on what they can do to minimise risks to their own health, but locking innocent, healthy people down is just wrong.

PCR is old and, in my opinion, selfishly looking out for his own well being at the expense of others. I say this as an older adult cancer survivor whose own immune system is compromised, which means I am at risk if I am not careful when out in public: There is no point to clinging onto life for a few more months or years if it means that the mass of mankind have to live a life not very much worth living, either through prolonged lockdown, through diminished social intercourse by social distancing, or through a generally degraded quality of life resulting from significant economic decline.

Because there are no double blind trials relating specifically to Covid-19, lol. Lack of “evidence” – same reason they said don’t bother with masks, etc. Bunch of CMA idiots.

Like the typical TDR sufferer, you conflate chloroquine with Hydroxychloroquine. These are completely different drugs and with entirely different safety records. No one is recommending taking chloroquine for Covid-19 you strawman logical fallacy master.

Hydroxychloroquine Tied to Deaths, Heart Risk in Covid Study

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-22/hydroxychloroquine-linked-to-deaths-heart-risks-in-covid-study

    From the article,

Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine didn’t benefit patients with the
coronavirus, either alone or in combination with an antibiotic, according
to the study published Friday by The Lancet medical journal.

It appears the study conflated Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine which is one of the tricks of the anti-HCL propagandists. Another trick is to site studies with patients on ventilators who are already half dead and then claim HCL has no benefit.

The slanderous behavior of all these anti-Trump big Pharma shills with their HCL smears, including Fauci and most of the mainstream media, who are scaring people into not taking an extremely safe and cheap drug that could have immense Covid-19 preventative and therapeutic benefits is disgusting and when the dust settles, I hope the lawsuits will fly.

  13. Paul,
The campaign against HCQ is just more theater to distract us from the truth. There is no proof this virus causes disease. But if people blame China, or the CIA, or bats or Pangolins, if they say some remedy is or isn’t effective, they still reinforce the basic message: this is real and can kill you.

  14. @anon

    Here are the problems.

First, I don’t know why anyone would bother with chloroquine in the first place since: (1) it’s known to be more toxic than hydroxychloroquine; (2) it’s thought to be less effective than hydroxychloroquine (at least as per in silico and in vitro studies); and (3) it is generally less available than hydroxychloroquine, at least in the U.S.

Second, given what’s known – what was known early on as a matter of fact – about COVID-19 disease, it makes sense that you’d want to start treating with hydroxychloroquine (or anything else for that matter) as early as possible, before the patients would develop cytokine storm and need to be hospitalized. This is why I was baffled by the FDA EUA that allowed the use of federally supplied hydroxychloroquine only for “certain hospitalized patients.”

Why not let the doctors and their patients decide to use it on an out-patient basis? Isn’t one of the main goals to try to keep sick people from overwhelming hospital capacity? This is one reason I believe that the hydroxychloroquine disinformation/smear campaign is bigger than just trying to make Trump look bad.

The Indian Council of Medical Research found HCQ to have very little side effects if any and that too on only a few of those tested. However they are recommending it as a prophylaxis (reduces the chance of infection) to healthcare workers who are expected to in their 30s in age. No idea if they are recommending it to older patients.

HCQ breakthrough: ICMR (The Indian Council of Medical Research) finds it’s effective in preventing coronavirus, expands its use 22 May, 2020

Three studies find that hydroxychloroquine reduces chances of contracting Covid, so ICMR allows more frontline workers to take it as a preventive drug.

“The ICMR had earlier announced that some side effects, such as abdominal pain and nausea, have been observed in healthcare workers who were administered HCQ.

The anti-malaria drug is often blamed for triggering irregular heartbeat.

However, in the final results of the studies (HCQ prophylaxis among 1,323 healthcare workers), the ICMR found mild adverse effects such as nausea in 8.9 per cent workers, abdominal pain in 7.3 per cent, vomiting in 1.5 per cent, low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) in 1.7 per cent and cardio-vascular effects in 1.9 per cent.”

    https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/no-major-side-effects-of-hcq-in-studies-in-india-can-be-used-as-preventive-covid-treatment-icmr/story-EflWWnPlVu0FHhV1OH1xoM.html
No major side-effects of HCQ in studies in India, can be used as preventive Covid treatment: ICMR (The Indian Council of Medical Research) May 26, 2020

“The ICMR’s statement came against the backdrop of the World Health Organization (WHO) temporarily suspending the testing of the drug as a potential treatment for Covid-19 over safety concerns.

During these six weeks, we got some data in India, mainly observational studies and some case control studies. We found there were no major side affects except for nausea, vomiting, palpitation occasionally. Hence in our advisory, we’ve recommended that it should be continued for prophylaxis as there is no harm. Benefit may be there,” ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said at a press briefing here on Tuesday.

He said it has been “clearly advised that HCQ should be taken with food, not on empty stomach”.”

    …snip…

“Another investigation from three central government hospitals here indicates that amongst healthcare workers involved in Covid-19 care, those on HCQ prophylaxis were less likely to develop SARS-CoV-2 infection, compared to those who were not on it. The benefit was less pronounced in healthcare workers caring for a general patient. Besides, an observational prospective study of 334 healthcare workers at AIIMS, out of which 248 took HCQ prophylaxis (median 6 weeks of follow-up) here also showed that those taking it had lower incidence of SARS-CoV-2 than those not taking it.

According to the advisory, the drug has to be given only on the prescription of a registered medical practitioner and it is advised to consult with a physician for any adverse event or potential drug interaction before initiation of medication.”

  17. Malla says:

As far as prophylaxis substances which reduce the chances of infection, few things I have come across are
    N-acetylcysteine (NAC)
    Quertecin
    Melatonin
Vitamin D supplements (as well as getting adequate sunshine)
    Vitamin C
    Zinc

Taking the above it seems reduces the chance of catching an infection. There is even Licorice/ Licorice root, which is common in both Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as Indian Ayurveda. But I think one should not over dose on this stuff. Seems to increase the effectiveness of the body’s defense and reduces the chance of getting infected by Covid.
Also some claim Camphor (found in Vicks) may work to prevent Covid. There is a rage in India about homeopathy medicines called Arsenicum Album as well as Camphora.
