This is the third of four reports on Germany in crisis. Part 1 of this series is here and Part 2 here.
BERLIN— I return briefly to those singular moments when Olaf Scholz stood next to President Joe Biden at a press conference on Feb. 7, 2022, after concluding private talks in the Oval Office. This was the occasion when Biden declared that if Russian forces entered Ukrainian territory—as he was by this time confident they would have no choice but to do—“then there will no longer be a Nord Stream II. We will bring an end to it.”
Take a moment to view the video record of this event. What do we see in those two men? Let us consider their demeanor, their gestures, their facial expressions, what each said and left unsaid, and read what we can into them. I read a 77–year history.
In Biden we have a man calmly matter-of-fact as he states his intention to destroy the expensive industrial assets of the country represented by the man next to him. We note his perfect aplomb, the dismissive wave of his hand, as he puts on full display his indifference to a close ally’s interests and, indeed, sovereignty.
I have until recently attributed Biden’s astounding coarseness as he stands with Scholz to the gracelessness that has marked the whole of his, Biden’s, political career. But I reflect now, as I think of this occasion in the light of all that preceded it, there is another way to judge it: After decades of overweening dominance within the Atlantic alliance, Biden saw no need any longer to disguise America’s hegemonic prerogative. Indeed, in the C–SPAN recording linked above we see the face of a man who takes malign pride in this exercise of raw power.
For his part, Scholz stood at a separate lectern, per protocol, and said nothing in response to Biden’s remark. His demeanor, Scholz’s, indicates he was neither surprised nor angry. He seems, rather, resigned, apprehensive, faintly regretful, faintly submissive. In his face we read the apprehension of a soldier who has just accepted his commanding officer’s baleful battle plan. My guess is he was also wondering what in hell he would say to his government and to Germans on his return to Berlin.
The best way to understand this very pregnant occasion, which has to count as unique or very nearly in the annals of trans–Atlantic diplomacy, is to look backward and then forward from it.
What a long span of time lay between the Germany of the early 1980s, Helmut Schmidt’s Germany, and Olaf Scholz’s Germany, the Germany that fairly cowered as it stood on a dais with America 40 years later. Schmidt, a Social Democrat given to Willy Brandt’s Ostpolitik, had stood with other Europeans to defend Germany’s interests against President Ronald Reagan’s blunt attempts to impose America’s Cold War disciplines. Scholz, a Social Democrat of a very different kind, was not inclined to defend Germany against Joe Biden even when its very sovereignty was at issue.
How did Germany come to this? I grew convinced, after some days’ reporting here, a city the Iron Curtain long divided, and more time elsewhere in Germany, that Cold War and post–Cold War politics do not of themselves give an answer to this question. No, as I found often during my decades as a correspondent, one must resort to psychology and culture fully to understand politics and history, the latter being in some measure expressions of the former.

The Allies’ plans for the nations they vanquished in 1945, which in a brief time amounted to America’s plans, were never short of ambition. At the Potsdam Conference, a few months after the fall of the Reich, Churchill, Truman, and Stalin divided Germany into four occupation zones: Britain, France, the U.S., and the Soviet Union would administer one each. Berlin was in the Soviet zone but was similarly divided. Millions of German settlers had to be repatriated from lands the Nazis had conquered—a messy undertaking marked by never-now-mentioned suffering. A de–Nazification program began immediately, and the German military was to be dismantled, although both of these objectives were complicated, to put the point mildly, as the wartime alliance with Moscow gave way to the Cold War the Truman administration insisted on provoking.
But it was in the matter of German hearts and minds that the remaking of the Reich into another kind of country tilted from ambition in the direction of hubris. This was a psychological operation the sweep and magnitude of which may never since have been matched. Only the post–1945 Japanese have undergone anything similar to it. This project was at first shaped and executed by Rooseveltian New Dealers. It was a year or two before Cold War ideologues dispensed with the high ideals in favor of the rigors of late–1940s, early–1950s anti–Communism. The Japanese, not without a subdued bitterness, call this “the reverse course.”
I do not know what the Germans call it, but the postwar volte-face amounted to the same thing. The project was the same across both oceans. It was not to engender authentic experiments in democracy, bottom-up attempts, as the orthodox historians advertise this period. It was to enlist Germany and Japan as Cold War soldiers. Democratization became mere pretext, inasmuch as democracy by its very definition can be neither exported by any country nor imported by any other. In this way, I may as well add, these two nations were the templates Washington applied in many other places during the Cold War. Pretend to democratize, cultivate submission: This was the true postwar project.
To put this point another way, to the extent Germany and Japan made themselves democracies in the postwar decades, this was not because of America’s influence so much as in spite of it.
In the U.S. zone, administrators in and out of uniform assumed control of all forms of information. All newspapers, magazines, and radio broadcasters were shut down. American journalists (some of whom went on to illustrious careers) were assigned to reinvent German media to suit what was to be a new democracy. The propaganda programs accompanying this reinvention of mass media, in time heavy with anti–Soviet messaging, were immense, extending from reeducation projects and radio talk shows down to mass-distributed leaflets. The literature about this period gives the impression of an undertaking that excluded no uttered or written word and no image from official scrutiny.
A brief digression.
One of the memorable television programs of my early childhood was a popular law-and-order serial called Highway Patrol. I remember it well even after many years. There was something charismatic about the weekly episodes and their star. Broderick Crawford was the jowly, gruff, sloppily dressed chief of police in a never-named California town. He would sweep into crime scenes and fling open his patrol car’s door amid sirens and clouds of dust, barking orders into his hand-held radio—famously responding to his officers with the unforgettable “10–4.”
Highway Patrol ran for 156 episodes, 1955 to 1959. On the face of it the series was a glorification of official authority. It was about the need to maintain order amid constant threats to it. But, text and subtext, Highway Patrol was about postwar America; each installment was a reiteration of what it meant to be American during those years. The Cold War was never once mentioned, but the Cold War seemed to hover in every one of those episodes. Among the programs running themes were the ever-presence of fear and the necessity of allegiance.
I mention this because of something I learned many years later. It is amusing and highly instructive all at once. Highway Patrol was developed by an ambitious production company called Ziv Television Programs. Frederick Ziv, founder and principal, more or less invented TV syndications (The Cisco Kid, Bat Masterson, etc.). Ziv’s productions, implicitly and occasionally explicitly, were given to anti–Communist atmospherics in Highway Patrol fashion. And after Ziv signed Broderick Crawford, in 1955, Highway Patrol was the first American series to be broadcast on Germany’s new commercial television network.
To finish my point, how odd now to think that German families sitting in front of their televisions a decade after their terrible defeat in a world-historical war could watch the same cops-and-criminals drama that resonated with a young boy before his screen in a leafy suburb of New York.
Highway Patrol is a small example of another dimension of the postwar project in Germany: It was an early case of what we now call soft power. It is impossible to overstate the importance of this assertion of American influence in postwar Germany or its consequences ever since. If occupation administrators controlled what Germans thought by way of their information and propaganda operations, importations of American cultural artifacts—films, music, food, social mores, and so on—came to control how Germans thought: how they thought about the world and about themselves.
The power of soft power, if I can put the point awkwardly, was more obvious in Japan at this time because the Occupation amounted to a confrontation between two different civilizations. From the Americans the Japanese learned billiards, ballroom dancing, big band jazz, Walt Disney movies, how to mix Martinis, how to carry themselves with the nonchalance of Americans. It was just this way in Germany but in a less abrupt fashion. Postwar Germans discovered blue jeans, hamburgers, Bill Haley and His Comets, John Wayne, how to drink Coca–Cola, and who can count how many other things.
If I were to capture the essence of the postwar project in Germany, I would say its enduring outcome has been a remade consciousness. As a German-speaking Swiss friend put it the other day, “Germans, more than any other Europeans and first among them, learned to speak the language of the victor.” This brings me to a fateful error meriting brief explication.
To take one step back, among the prevailing orthodoxies of the Cold War decades was called in the academy “modernization theory.” In a single phrase this held that modernization required Westernization. They came to the same thing, supposedly. For all those newly independent nations in what we call the Global South, if they wanted to make themselves modern they would have to follow the Westerners. In view of its countless consequences, all of them destructive, I consider this among the worst mistakes of the past eight decades. Only now are non–Western nations learning that becoming truly modern begins with becoming truly themselves.
Germany made a roughly parallel mistake after its defeat in 1945. To advance beyond the disaster of the First World War and the barbarities that led to the Second meant becoming thoroughly modern at last. It meant to democratize. And to democratize meant to Americanize. You can count on the Americans to foist this harmful fallacy on the world: They have been doing so, I would say, since the Wilsonians of the early 20th century. I do not wish to simplify the case, but this is at least approximately the trap into which postwar Germany fell.
As various German friends have remarked in conversation these past months, setting out to change the consciousness of a nation is, beyond the implicit hubris, a profoundly fraught endeavor. It is to tamper with a people’s very identity, their most basic understanding of who they are. The danger of a collective psychological unmooring of this kind—especially among people burdened with guilt due to their prewar and wartime conduct—is to me obvious. In the cases of Germany and Japan alike, the circumstances of the postwar world seem to me to have defined the results. To go from defeat to the imperatives of the victor’s Cold War ideology was bound to produce, across both oceans, what I have for a long time called cultures of submission.
When the Iron Curtain bisected Germany in 1949 and as Americans directed the nation’s reconstruction, I mean to suggest, it was a kind of mutilation—on maps, but also in psyches. And neither Germany nor its people has yet recovered from this disturbance, as I think of it. This is to state what is bound to be evident to anyone who pays attention while walking to and fro in it. Germany has not been itself this past three-quarters of a century; Germans are, in psychological terms, in some measure separated from themselves, untethered. It is a peculiar condition for a people who have always seemed to me of strong character.
Something Oscar Wilde observed long ago comes to mind—oddly, but not so oddly as all that. “Most people are other people,” Wilde wrote in De Profundis, the famous tract he composed while serving time in Reading Gaol. Wilde had very different matters on his mind, to put it too mildly, but this remarkable pensée seems to me perfectly to the point as we think of postwar Germans. “Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions,” the passage continues, “their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation.”
I think of this passage when I think back to Olaf Scholz as he stood in dull silence three years ago while the American president announced to the world he was about to abuse and humiliate Scholz all at once, giving not a thought to either. Who was Scholz in those moments? It is odd to consider the most persuasive answer may be, “Nobody.” There on the dais, nominally an equal but obviously otherwise, Scholz was the post–1945 culture of submission made flesh. To me he called to mind every Japanese premier who has paid a state visit to Washington since the Occupation ended in 1952: Like Scholz, they have all come to submit, leaving who they truly are at home.
Among the few bright spots one detects in Germany today—here in Berlin, but more pronouncedly, I would say, in the villages and towns east of here in the former German German Republic—is the faint but detectable prospect that Germany and its people may in time find their way back to themselves. “We’re all looking for our country,” Dirk Pohlmann, the journalist and documentarian, said as we concluded our morning together in Potsdam late last autumn. It seemed the thing he wanted me most to see.

Olaf Scholz will go down in infamy as the man who destroyed Germany a third time, and maybe for good. It will be an epitaph unworthy for such a non entity.
This is the problem in Germany, no men, Germany needs a Bismarck so badly, when France lacked a man they produce a Joan of Arc.
Germany needs something soon to fight for their existence, a rape epidemic, stabbings, industrial sabotage, will a real German please stand up?
Or will Germans continue to slink around, head bowed with tail between their legs like an egg sucking dog? Or grab themselves their backpacks and go on another jaunt to forget about what it is to be a defeated people only to be asked constantly “are you German?”
Germans cannot be a people again until they rid themselves of the occupier, now is a great opportunity with Trump in the Whitehouse, Japan is also at this crossroad. Its time for the Germans to throw off their inner Patty Hearst and forge a new future, failure to do so is a failure as a people.

The conquest of Germany was long the goal of both London and Moscow. Then as now, control of Germany meant control of Europe. London had a carefully constructed continental ally in France, and had no wish to see its junior partner overshadowed by an independent, sovereign power it couldn’t control. Virtually as soon as he succeeded Lenin, Stalin spoke again and again in the Politburo of the necessity of securing Germany as the springboard from which to launch the invasion of Europe and England, thus bringing Marx’s “final republic” one giant step closer to fruition. Hitler was a brilliant man who clearly saw the big picture, that it was imperative for Europe to quickly unite into a defensible entity capable of surviving these twin existential challenges.
Now we are seeing in the Ukraine War an almost carbon copy of how London used the nationalist fanatics in Warsaw to work against their state’s best interests, in order to trigger regime change war in the real opponent. With this in mind it’s not hard to detect the hand of FDR behind the scenes in WW2 and its buildup, sabotaging every attempt of the peoples of the Old World to work out their own destiny peacefully. One more prolonged, devastating war and Europe would be over as a world power. Then the US could finally take England’s place as master of the world, just as some of the Founders had dreamed so many years before. This is the next logical foreign policy goal, after the US had successfully overthrown or subverted every republic in the western hemisphere and had established strategic supply stations for its war fleets in the Pacific and the Caribbean.
Highway Patrol is one of my favorite television series. Virtually all the cops and criminals are white – so quaint. You can see it on YouTube.
I don’t see this show as having a bad effect on Germany. On the contrary, the show is about policing the way it should be. The good guys are good, and the bad guys are bad.
It is not like TV today – a disgusting propaganda medium that promotes the bad and denigrates the good.
That being said, the Germans need to shake off the U.S., and the U.S. needs to shake off the Jews and their minions.
Will this ever happen? I don’t know.

This is a very good, thoughtful series by Lawrence, but I take issue with this one sentence: “Millions of German settlers had to be repatriated from lands the Nazis had conquered—a messy undertaking marked by never-now-mentioned suffering.”
Many of these “settlers” had been in those countries for countless generations, indeed some since the Middle Ages. I’m unaware of how many new “settlers” the Nazi conquests brought with them, but I sincerely doubt they outnumbered these much older German communities. And yet they were all forced to leave, in part, no doubt, because most of them had supported the new, invading German conquerors and were thereafter viewed with mistrust and hostility by the host countries.
Still, any forced removal of an ancestrally established population is cruel and inhumane.
Germany, before unification in the 19th century, had been an empire for a good thousand years, and imperial rule often leads to mixed populations. The German populations of Czechoslovakia, Rumania, Poland and other eastern European countries were as much a part of those lands’ histories as anything else.
But the Murrikins have long been in the business of trying to rewrite history.

Even during the war – the one fought by Aryan cannon fodder for the sake of the Jews – the Germans believed their opponents were essentially honorable men like themselves. Witness the actions of Franz Stigler, a man for whom battlefield honor (in this case, in the skies) was inseparable from his personal identity.
At Nuremberg (and in many lesser-known examples), however, the Germans learned that American and British “honor”- as expressed by the representatives of those countries – was a fiction. Never had civilized men, in the flush of victory, conducted show-trials against defeated adversaries. The actions of enraged men in combat are one thing; the actions of robed judges, claiming pseudo-legal rights which they themselves created in defiance of previous standards, is quite another.
The Germans learned all too well that with their defeat, the Jewish control of the West was complete. Any future in which Whites can have a significant presence depends first upon Whites grasping that fact.

Hitler had always denounced communism, even when though he occasionally collaborated with communists himself. During year and half while the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was still in effect, for example, the KPD was illegal in Germany. And then you have the fact that in 1945, the Germans had just fought a grueling, brutal four-year long war against Bolshevism on the Eastern Front. What would be more natural for a German at that point than hardcore anti-Communism?
No, the poison that the (((American))) occupation régime first introduced into the (West-)German body politic in 1945 was not anti-Communism; rather, it wasthe the lie of the ‘holocaust’ and the prevalence of Antideutsch-ideology among the intelligentsia. It was the (((American))) occupation régime that initiated the project of conditioning Germans to finally accept the ‘collective guild’ narrative, against which they had unsuccessfully rebelled after the First World War by backing Hitler. Within a generation, this would quickly spiral into the wackiness of the ‘Red Army Faction’ (possibly itself a GLADIO-front), which seems to have inspired so many of the Boomer-politicians in contemporary west Germany … such as Scholz.
My mother was a Jew from the Bronx who married a Lutheran German… who moved to the U.S. from Germany… in his early twenties to get a master’s degree in mining engineering at the Univ. of Utah… where he met my mother who was working on a PHD in biology… in the mid-50s… among the small-city still-isolated Mormon pioneers. My two brothers and I… each a year apart raised in Denver Colorado… grew up traveling every two years… from when we were infants through our college years… to both New York City and Neunkirchen Saarland (south Germany on French border)… to visit both families.
Beginning in the early 60s through the 70s and 80s we three brothers experienced the post-war NYC Jewish culture (grandparents owned a photo-printing business) and the still-rubble-strewn German culture (grandparents owned a corner bakery). I could probably write a book with dozens of examples comparing and contrasting my perceptions of the cultural differences.
Bottom line…
1) From the very beginning (certainly by 6yrs old?) I grew to deeply despise (hate?) the NYC Jews who were clearly mean/evil spirited… they lectured to us young boys things like… “Take or Be Taken… Kill or Be Killed”… which, by the time I was 10yrs old, I argued with my mother was clearly the philosophy of a totally “evil” and “uncivilized” people. It was a nightmare in NYC… everything was so hateful and miserable… and “uncivilized”.
2) I couldn’t have felt more deep love and care for my German family… who were so civilized, caring and dignified… when we ate meals together and took long walks together through the beautiful forests picking berries and mushrooms… swimming at the fancy pools with 10m platform diving boards and all the lakes and rivers. It was a dream in Germany… everything was so happy and cheerful… and “civilized”.
The main reason I’m writing this comment is not so much because of this article (which was very good… thank you)… but because what I watched yesterday… Tucker Carlson interviewing a Jew from the Bronx… George Friedman… who is older than me but younger than my mother…

If there was anything I would wish for… it would be that ALL people could see and understand the evil that people like George Friedman represent. The mind-set of an alien culture is baffling to those outside it, and you make an important point. If I had been told from infancy some preposterous and provable lie, or series of lies, I would believe it, particularly if it had been stressed to me that those falsehoods were part-and-parcel of my racial identity. The “Holocaust”, as presented in media, is demonstrably false, but what Jew growing up with it would disbelieve it, or could disbelieve it? “Proving a negative” may be impossible, but the proofs against the claims of the “Holocaust” are overwhelming. Germany has been saddled with its own “Stockholm Syndrome” ever since the summation of the Second World War.
There are some brave Germans who have gone against the “official narrative” of WW2 with Germany seen as being on “the wrong side of history” and as such are (still) considered to be “the bad guys”, but they are either too few or afraid of being “outed” as “holocaust™ deniers”, subject to severe punishment, and yes, Nazis (which is unfairly still a pejorative term in Germany and in much of the rest of the civilized world).
This is especially bolstered by the (in)famous “jewish holocaust™” which was created by the Allies in order to keep Germany permanently demonized.
Hollywood movie producers were dispatched to the “camps” to “prove” that Germany was guilty of genocide (which was not the case as the victims who were filmed perished from typhus due to infrastructure collapse), not in “death camps”. These Hollywood producers should have been taken to Dresden and other real genocide areas.
In fact, it was Russian jews who “rebuilt” Auschwitz after the war in its own propagandistic way, creating and amplifying engineering errors that the Germans would have never done.
From non-sealed “gas chambers” with wooden doors that “swing the wrong way” to no means for inserting and ventilating the poison gases, using a delousing agent as an ineffective “poison gas”, anyone with an engineering background can easily poke holes in all of the claims made by holocaust™ promoters.
Let’s not forget that jewish “holocaustianity™” has been deemed to be a state religion in many countries from which no deviation of belief is permitted.

Recently, Florida Governor DeSantis traveled to israel where he signed legislation to outlaw and prosecute (certain) “hate speech”. He signed this legislation while in israel and made it known that it was to outlaw criticism of the “holocaust™”. Now, who does DeSantis work for?
It is only a matter of time before “holocaustianity™” becomes the “official state religion” here in the USA.
If the “holocaust™” is based on “truth” why not encourage a full impartial investigation into this “event”? What are “holocaust™” promoters afraid of?
Jews have always been excellent propaganda agents, tugging at heartstrings by always showing jews as being “downtrodden” victims and always being marginalized and victimized. This is a “feature” and not a “bug” as it has been successful in keeping the holocaust™ fable alive to the present day.
Jewish “holocaust™ museums” (actually jewish freak shows) display piles of shoes, glasses, clothing, and other piles of “who knows what” in order to claim that 6,000,000 jews were “gassed out of existence”.
These jewish freaks shows get massive amounts of taxpayer-funded dollars despite being totally out of place in American society. Schoolchildren are brainwashed and propagandized in these freak shows, which is actually child abuse to allow children into these jewish freak shows.

I had a professor in graduate school who was German, and although she had been living in the US for decades, still spoke with a German accent. In one class, the discussion of the war and the holocaust came up. She burst into tears. The students rallied behind her, and thanked her for her intense show of emotion.

That film put a human face on the Russian people, possibly for the first time, and made it impossible for young minds such as mine to unquestioningly fear or hate them. I liked that film so much I even painted a red star on a toy submarine I had. I don’t think my father was too impressed by that – he was a major in NATO mobile command, but the film had a lasting effect on me, to the point I even started learning Russian. I didn’t make much progress as all I had was a book, and unlike today no media to help, apart from Radio Moscow on short-wave when it wasn’t being jammed.
My father’s attitude was a mystery to me actually. The first people who helped us when we moved to Canada were a Russian couple who’d been through the war and had lost 4 children to that conflict. We rented a suite in their home for the first year until we bought a house. That couple, plus their surviving teenage son, treated us like family, and the mother cared for me and my little brother after school before my mom came home from work. Her husband, a railway worker with the CPR, even helped us build a garage at our new home. So my childhood experience of Russians was very favourable – an impression that’s survived every encounter since then with Russian people.

Yes, Bulgaria was an ally of Germany during WWII but it did not fight Russia, de facto or otherwise, if you check the facts.
In spite of any declaration of war against USSR, bulgarians did fight against USSR.
Directly, the bulgarian navy escorted Axis convoys in the Black Sea. The Bulgarian Navy was involved in a number of skirmishes with the Soviet Black Sea Fleet, which attacked Bulgarian shipping.

Much more important, the Germans began to make use of Bulgarian occupation troops in large areas of Serbia. Practically bulgarian troops (~400.000 at the end of the war) acted as gendarmes of Germany in occupied territories and so german troops were withdraw or not needed in Balkans so where send to the Eastern Front.
Beside that, I know (verbal sources not entire sure) that bulgarian volunteers fighted directly on Eastern Front, despite a ban of authorities.

Secondly, the role of the Romanians (as well as Bulgarians) in the First and Second World Wars was token and very minor, i.e. they switched sides and allied with Russia when everything was already over. Romanians fought much more on the Nazi side throughout the entire war and only under Stalingrad 160,000 Romanians left their bones.
There is no point in hiding the true history and true origin of Romanians, it has nothing to do with you, but if you continue to twist and distort information, you will lose all credibility and harm the Romanian people because they will also be destroyed (as has already been decided for all Slavs) before they even open their eyes.

750.000 soldiers mobilized in WWI, 400.000 died (and more than 250.000 civilians). At a country of 7.5 million peoples. After Tsar Nicholas was betrayed, we fight alone against Germany & Austro Hungarians. And stabilized the front for the entire 1917. Ourselves alone.
2 millions mobilized in WWII, 500.000 million soldiers died (more than 400.000 million civilians died). A country of 15 millions. With no help form allies good-for-nothing we ended in 1940 with our provinces ripped off by USSR, Hungary and Bulgaria. With deportation and mass murderers in Bessarabia and Bukovina by USSR and ethnic cleansing and mass murderers in Transilvania by Hungary. As a matter of fact, the switch of sides by Romania shortened WWII with six month. Precious time, because in less than 6 months probably Germany would have get atomic bomb.
