Fresh from his triumphal “Get Brexit Done!” campaign, Prime Minister Boris Johnson anticipates a swift secession from the European Union.

But if Britain secedes from the EU, warns Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland will secede from the United Kingdom.

Northern Ireland, which voted in 2016 to remain in the EU, could follow Scotland out of Britain, leaving her with “Little England” and Wales.

Not going to happen, says Boris. His government will not allow a second referendum on Scottish independence.

Yet the Scottish National Party won 48 of Scotland’s 59 seats in Parliament, and Sturgeon calls this a mandate for a new vote to secede:

“If (Boris) thinks … saying no is the end of the matter then he is going to find himself completely and utterly wrong. … You cannot hold Scotland in the union against its will.”

She has a point. If a majority of Scots wish to secede, how does a democratic Great Britain indefinitely deny them the right of self-determination?

Is Scotland fated to become for Britain what Catalonia is to Spain?

Where does this phenomenon, this continuing unraveling of old and proliferation of new nations, this epidemic of secessionism, end?

The most recent population explosion of new nations began three decades ago, when 15 republics of the USSR became independent nations. Soon, several of the 15 began to unravel further.

Transnistria seceded from Moldova. South Ossetia and Abkhazia seceded from Georgia. Chechnya sought to break free of Russia, only to be crushed. Since 2015, the Donbass has sought to secede from Ukraine.

When Josip Tito’s Yugoslavia collapsed, six “nations” seceded from Belgrade.

When did secessionism begin? The Americans started it all.

The first great secessionist cause was the Revolution, when the 13 American colonies declared and won independence from the British crown.

It is solemnly declared today that our Revolution was about ideas, such as the equality of all men. But the author of the Declaration did not believe in equality.

Jefferson was a Virginia plantation owner, some of whose slaves were with him in Philadelphia. He described Native Americans in the Declaration as “merciless Indian Savages.” The British are fraternally called “brethren” with whom we share “ties of a common kindred,” but who have been “deaf to the voice of consanguinity.”

I.e, our cousins have been deaf to the call of our common blood.

John Jay, in Federalist 2, before the Constitution was even ratified, spoke of the elements that formed the nation — “one connected country to one united people … descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion … similar in their manners and customs.”

A second secessionist movement, six decades later, created a second American nation. Texans under Sam Houston rose up and ripped that vast province away from its young mother country, Mexico.

The third secessionist movement united 11 states that sought to create a new confederated nation outside the Union, as the revolutionary generation had created a new nation outside of Britain.

In the 19th century, a dozen new nations were created by Latin American secessionists of the Spanish and Portuguese empires who emulated the example of the Americans of 1776.

After 1945, colonies of the British, French, Portuguese and Belgian empires seceded to produce a baby boom of new nations whose most common characteristic seems to be that all receive foreign aid and all have seats in the U.N. General Assembly.

If the secessionism epidemic is to someday expire, then its causes will have to be addressed. And what are they?

Secessionism appears rooted principally in issues of national identity — ethnicity, religion, race, language, culture and “the mystic chords of memory” — most of which Jay identified as both uniting Americans and separating us from our British “brethren.”

Yet these issues of identity appear not to be receding but rising in the Caucasus, Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

The Kurds, the Palestinians, the Baluch and many more seek their own nations. Taiwan’s secession is not recognized by China. The secession of Russian-speaking Donbass is not recognized by a U.S.-armed Ukraine, or by us.

As more and more people identify themselves by who they are, and are not, secessions of people from each other will continue.

These are not inconsequential matters. In 1939, the question of whether 300,000 Germans in a Polish-controlled city, Danzig, should be restored to German rule led to the worst war in the history of the world.

The peace of mankind in the 21st century may well depend upon our ability to accommodate this inexorable secessionist drive to some degree.

In June 1945, the U.N. had 50 members. It begins 2020 with 193.

Last week, Bougainville, a South Pacific island cluster of Papua New Guinea, voted 98%, in a nonbinding referendum for independence, to become the world’s newest nation. Papua New Guinea won its own independence from Australia when Gerald Ford was president.

And the beat goes on.

Patrick J. Buchanan is the author of “Nixon’s White House Wars: The Battles That Made and Broke a President and Divided America Forever.”

Will the Secessionist Epidemic Ever End?

Succession is the symptom, not the cause. A better question is,

“When will elites stop forcing combinations that don’t make sense?”

The EU was a doomed project from the moment of inception. There are no shared “European Values” to underpin it. How are Christian Nations like Hungary and Poland going to share a legal union with muslim caliphates like Sweden and Germany?

The question is not, “Are more successions coming?” That is 100% certain. But, it is not an epidemic. It is more akin to gravity pulling things back to earth.

What remains to been seen is how they will unfold and how many innocent people will be needlessly hurt in the process.

The Euro Currency [EZ] is an inescapable trap that is about to fail. Negative Interest Rates are becoming permenant? How is that possible? And, because there is no succession allowed the end is likely to be extremely unpleasant.

One may consider that the larger a nation or a construct like the EU the more it is inclined “to do whatever it takes to promote its interests regardless of any morality”. Also the larger the entity the more it becomes a target for lobbying decreasing actual democracy. Both DC and Brussels are excellent examples.

So this secessionist development might actually be not that bad.

  4. KenH says:

America now needs to breakup. It is too big and too racially and politically diverse to reach any kind of consensus and be governable. The sooner America collapses the better, especially for white people
whose toil, taxes and military service is what keeps this Jewish owned plantation and multiracial funny farm from collapsing.

  5. Renoman says:

Guess what! We’re not real fond of diversity. Shocking I know but anyone with their eyes open is not surprised.

  6. The men who founded the United States were members of a privileged Anglo-American aristocracy which was anything but democratic in its beliefs or its actions. Unlike their counterparts in England, the American ruling elite had earned its wealth – largely through slavery and land speculation, by the way, not by actual labor – and were thus ineligible for membership in the traditional aristocracy of their mother country, which was based on a rigid, hereditary hierarchy.

This jealously and resentment of their inferior social status is what created the agitation for a final break with England. Ordinary Americans – the ones the Federalists would later dismiss as “rabble,” having used them as fighters for independence – suffered little inconvenience under English rule. In colonial times most Americans knew themselves to be among the most fortunate of men, for they were Englishmen – the freest people on earth, their personal liberties guaranteed by the Magna Carta and the 1689 Bill of Rights. In an age of absolute monarchy and despotism, they were governed by a wise constitutional sovereign whose authority came directly from God Himself, yet whose power was limited by the consent of an elected Parliament.

The American revolution was as much a civil war among colonial rivals as a challenge to British authority. And the growing talk in Parliament about abolishing slavery alarmed America’s wealthiest men in the south. The misfortunes so loudly decried in the Declaration were largely measured British responses to the repeated refusals of the American elite to obey the laws that bound other Britons. Americans were handled with kid gloves by the British, whose blood kinsmen they were. If you want to see genuine British tyranny against white people in the 18th century, look at the horrors they perpetrated in Ireland and the Scottish Highlands.

For those who still take the exaggerations of rebel propagandists as the truth of conditions in colonial America, Smithsonian historian Barbara Clark’s book “The Freedoms We Lost: Consent and Resistance in Revolutionary America” is an eye-opening introduction to reality. She thoroughly contrasts and compares the rights the average American enjoyed under British rule to what they were subjected to under the Federalist regimes that followed.

  16. Secessionism appears rooted principally in issues of national identity

It’s rooted in a single issue: Freedom.

And the smaller the political unit, the greater the freedom. Consider how much say you have in your local neighborhood association–where you have the right to stand up and be heard–compared with your clout in the U.S. Congress, for example.

Even if your local association has been co-opted by martinets, you’re much more likely to unseat them than you are your senator or representative.

Freedom and self-determination require and reflect the smallest-possible increments. Everyone and everything that wants to secede should be permitted to do so. If, having seceded, people find their polities no longer of practical size, well then they can band together in a confederation with others. Voluntarily!

And the voluntary part includes the right to secede again whenever they see fit. If a more powerful ‘partner’ insists on enforcing your continued association, then you are no longer free.

Also, I’ve never seen “Anti-Whites” demand Asian nations. They tend to despise East Asians as well. If you have any counter-evidence, cite it.

  23. SteveK9 says:

A referendum on secession was held in Scotland and it failed. Like Brexit, you can’t keep holding referenda until you get the vote you want. Northern Ireland elected more Nationalists, than Unionists to Parliament for the first time … by one vote. Scotland will not secede, but Ireland could indeed become unified and remain in the EU.

  24. “The peace of mankind in the 21st century may well depend upon our ability to accommodate this inexorable secessionist drive to some degree.”
Patrick Buchanan could well be right. But the motivation of interest is a crucial factor in determining whether one group wants to secede from a union. The 13 colonies broke away from Great Britain under the banner of “No Taxation without Representation”. Nothing they held in common could overcome this divergence. Quite often we unite with enemies because it suits our interests, not our principles: Republican France united with autocratic Russia in the First World War against Germany; similarly in the Second, the western democracies allied with Marxist USSR. Both sides concluded Germany to be the most threatening adversary. Interest can cut across all apparently unifying principles: family, kin, nation, religion, ideology, politics – everything. And if conflicting core interests cannot be accommodated war is inevitable, as history warns.

No again. I said that Christians lost. Only irrational Muslim anti-logic could twist that into A statement about a Jewish state.

Also, all Caliphates are by definition Muslim. Therefore, a Jewish Caliphate is an inherently void concept.

    You keep showing your Islamophobia,

Third strike. I show Islamo-accuracy. The correct translation of Jihad, the core pillar of the Muslim faith, is “Murdering and Raping Infidels“. People like me are now widely believed as the Christian world sees invading Muslim rape gangs violating Christian girls.

  27. I see what you’re doing there, rhetorically, with the trope of secession as an epidemic. But it winds up a bit muddled.

Here’s is how the whole world thinks of it. Secession is not rooted in national identity, it’s rooted in the right to self-determination of peoples. Peoples have self-determination if and only if they have their human rights, because human rights include the cultural rights that protect your culture (or your ‘identity,’ whatever that means) from an overreaching state.

So if you want to stop secession, then stop the overreaching states. The world’s worst overreaching state is the USA.

And anyway, what’s wrong with secession? North America would be more innocuous and pleasant if the saner peoples seceded. Secession will have run its course when the USA has broken into non-nuclear, non-militarized successor states that do not attack their subject population or the outside world, and conform to rule of law. A couple dozen Costa Ricas.

Your problem is, you follow your logical nose right up to the point at which you have to say, the USA is bullshit, then you reel away in cognitive dissonance. Sloughing off the USSR did Russia a world of good. They lead the free world now. Sloughing off the USA will be equally beneficial for inter alia New England, Cascadia, Alaska, California, Appalachia, Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii, and the Quaker hinterlands.

So let’s get on with it, do to the USA what we did to the USSR – knock it over, rip it apart, wreck its defense industrial base. This country is full of people who know how to knock over a regime, thanks to CIA. Shitcan the USA, it’s a cancer on the world. It’s a cancer on the American peoples. The problem, KenH, is that the South was not allowed to peacefully (and legally) secede back when it was much more possible. Perhaps only tryant Lincoln, obsessed with preserving the Union at all costs, could have held it together. Naturally, Lincoln is praised by mainstream historians as our greatest president, while anti-unionist researchers like Thomas DiLorenzo, for one example, consider him our worst. For those who say that the US military and police will not fire on its own gun-wielding citizens, just consider the blood bath of that war, in which 800,000 Americans died.

No matter who wins the coming election, neither party will ever consider allowing secession, no matter how intolerable conditions become in the failing USA. It may well be a pipe dream, like John the Savage, trying and failing to escape from “Brave New World.” The only way I think a US break-up might be successful is if the US loses the coming Third World War. John Michael Greer writes of this possibility in his excellent thriller “Twilight’s Last Gleaming.”

Well our folks haven’t attempted secession just yet.

Of course, the last time they kilt quite a few more of your kind in addition to gettin’ your Marfans freak president as well…lol

IIRC it was Leftist states who were bitching about secession when Trump was elected.

    Don’t they know that’s “unconstitutional”?

While America’s collapse would be long overdue and welcome it would not be in the racial interests of the Jews. After all how can say, four separate nations, be counted on to fight Israel’s wars? And none of the four separate nations would be strong enough to intimidate Israel’s enemies. At least one of these nations could be very hostile to Jews and whites might get strong, vigorous and healthy again in the absence of Jewish power. And a strong white race is not good for the Jews since they consider us their archenemy. The economies of the new nations could be inimical to Jewish vulture capitalism and financial piracy.

The prospect of an American breakup and what it means for Jews is enough to wake them in the middle of the night in a cold sweat.

For these and other reasons the Jews will use every ounce of their power and wealth to ensure that a Soviet style American empire lasts as long as possible. The status quo is very good for Jews but bad for whites since the status quo is literally killing us off by a variety of means.

I do believe a gulag system for white wrong thinkers is in the cards, it’s only a matter of when. The corrupt, hyper partisan and ADL influenced FBI will likely groom some angry and unstable white guys to commit horrific terrorist attacks to gin up public support for draconian anti-terrorist legislation and mass summary arrests of people with pro-white political beliefs.

The (((federal judiciary))) is so politicized and corrupt that I believe they will begin reading in exceptions to the first and second amendments and deliver political victories to Jewish activists. For example, the 1A doesn’t allow anti-semitism and the 2a was only included for self defense with a .38 special and to protect the rights of duck hunters even though it was clearly put in place to resist capricious and tyrannical government such as we now have.

Don’t forget that John Roberts is a coin toss on most issues and shouldn’t expect the “conservative court” to be much of a bulwark against cultural Marxism and radical leftism. There’s also the prospect of Gorsuch or Kavanaugh flipping to become a permanent part of the leftist bloc of SCOTUS like several formerly conservative SCOTUS justices have done.

Well how about you identify yourself, Covriegirl.

    I’m harmless, remember.

I’ll give you my name and you give me yours and we’ll meet up for a few beers.

    How’s that sound?

This is mostly true. Canada (the formerly Anglo part) is like America without the Revolution. They did not seem to be oppressed. Real oppression was that of Yankees over the South, who should have been allowed to separate.

I think Dannyboy has a point. Solzhenitsyn asked, from the Gulag, how things might have been different, if, instead of being led off by sheep, the people had killed the agents sent to arrest them.

First, who is this “our folks”? Second, what are you waiting for, considering that you are being overrun by the hordes now?

“IIRC it was Leftist states who were bitching about secession when Trump was elected.”

    Sources?

“I’m harmless, remember. I’ll give you my name and you give me yours and we’ll meet up for a few beers.”

We know you’re harmless! The problem is that you act all tough when your soft as the Pilsbury Doughboy. And, no, that’s creepy for you to be asking me out. Yuck!

Normies fight like made to keep our nation together. Are you willing to be front and center, or in the back of the line?

“I do believe a gulag system for white wrong thinkers is in the cards, it’s only a matter of when.”

Exactly, when. Tick, tock, tick, tock. You keep bellowing that someday whites will go all Pinochet, yet that day is pushed back and back and back.

Either put up or shut up. Your move, Chief.

The human race will lose. It will be a nuclear war, not conventional. But if it makes you feel better to have hope about the U.S. breaking up, go right ahead! Just don’t be bitterly disappointed when that doesn’t materialize as you anticipate.

Lmao. I love how our little resident Media Matters troll tries to quell the rebellion:

“You’ll all lose, so don’t bother ! Just like fighting the Soviet Union! NUCLEAR ANNIHILATION! We should’ve made peace in the Cold War instead of trying to defeat them!”

The defeatism of the commie trolls is humorous. Reflects their own inadequacies.

Damn. Wish i could use the agree button again.

  63. So let Scotland secede from the United Kingdom. Big deal. As long as an independent Scotland is a free democracy I have no problem with it being an independent country.

  64. @tygertgr

I beg to differ about the saleablility of America. I am a Southerner. I would gladly see the Southern States get their freedom from the USA. We have wanted our nation since the 1860’s. The US government is a trashy, warlike group. Even in the 1860’s when the US Supreme court claimed the the South had every legal right to secede,…..good ole’ honest Abe simply passed a law that gave him the right to simply pack the court with Supreme court justices to keep one step of the originals who then said the South had no legal right to secede. The CSA forever.
