After Pearl Harbor, FDR declared that his role of “Dr. New Deal” had been superseded, replaced by his new role, “Dr. Win the War.”

Tuesday, President Donald Trump signaled that, in the war on the coronavirus pandemic, he, too, is executing a strategic pivot.

Where the medical crisis had been the central front, pulling the U.S. economy out of its coma is now his principal objective.

Trump is not unaware of the consequences of this decision.

“Will some people be affected badly? Yes,” said the president, “but we have to get our country open and we have to get it open soon.”

“Tremendous progress” has been made in dealing with the medical crisis, Vice President Mike Pence told reporters Tuesday, adding that the White House task force he chairs could be phased out in June.

Wednesday, Trump reversed that. From the public reaction, by popular demand, said Trump, the task force, whose primary medical voices are Drs. Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx, will continue.

As the U.S. death toll from COVID-19 is now 74,000 and still rising at a rate of 2,000 a day, what is behind Trump’s strategic pivot?

First, there is not a great deal more the White House can do to slow the inexorable momentum of the disease itself.

“Social distancing” and “sheltering” have been in place for weeks. So, too, are the programs for producing masks, gowns, gloves, tests and ventilators. Trump cannot create any more from a White House podium.

Invariably, while there, he is baited and thrown on the defensive by a hostile press demanding he explain why he did not act sooner.

The White House briefings on the medical crisis have reached a point of diminishing returns. These invariably return to statically grim news — the new hospitalizations, the latest death toll, the “hot spots” where the coronavirus has flared up and is now raging.

The medical crisis is essentially out of the president’s control; its future will be largely dictated by the coronavirus pandemic itself.

Moreover, the economy is familiar and friendly terrain for Trump. There, he has a three-year record of undeniable success. In this crisis, the president can decide, lead, act and produce visible results.

And in moving from the medical crisis to the economic crisis, Trump has weapons to wield like the veto power to shape policy and directives to issue from the Executive Branch.

With this pivot, Trump is wagering his presidency on a belief that, by mid-June, the first large wave of deaths from the pandemic will have passed, the numbers will be diminishing, and almost all of America will be ready to get back to work.

Trump is betting that it does not matter if the country does not agree with him to open up today. By July, the country will agree.

By summer’s end, he sees himself as having led us through the medical crisis that is then receding, and up and out of a Second Depression. That will be his best argument for reelection.

ORDER IT NOW

If this scenario unfolds, Trump can make the case that while China was the origin of the Wuhan virus that killed scores of thousands of Americans, it was Donald J. Trump who led us through the tragedy, and he is leading us forward, once again, to a new prosperity.

What will be Joe Biden’s argument to lead America, after having sat out the worst crisis since World War II in his basement?

A majority of Americans are today wary of unlocking the economy and opening up the nation. Yet, each week, more and more people are demanding that it be done. And each week, more and more governors, reflecting the views of their constituents, are moving up the dates for partial reopenings.

By midsummer, the country will have caught up with Trump. That is the idea that animates the pivot.

And it is not a bad wager. Does anyone believe it will be possible to keep hundreds of millions of Americans in their homes in June, July and August?

Wholesale civil disobedience may face governors still conducting a strict lockdown in July.

Europe is already ahead of us. Italy, which has now been passed by Britain as the nation in Europe with the most deaths, is already starting to open. So, too, is Germany, the largest European nation with the fewest deaths. And Austria is ahead of both.

Trump’s strategic pivot puts Biden in a box.

The mainstream media and left-wing of his Democratic Party want the governors to keep the states locked down as the only way to avert a second wave of infections. And they may be right.

But however many victims succumb to this pandemic, it is going to end, and America is going to be reopened. The closer we are to both goals by Nov. 3, the better Donald J. Trump’s chances of retaking the oath on Jan. 20, 2021.

That’s the way Trump is betting.

The time for handicapping the horserace and wishing “Nike!” for Team Red is long past relevance.

  3. If the death rate doesn’t drop off soon, Trump will go into the campaign season minimizing the deaths. He must be assuming the Zionists will guarantee his re-election as part of preparation for the Second Term big war that is in the works.

  4. A123 says:

A pivot would be a sudden and substantial change of direction. It would be more accurate to say that Trump is adapting the plan as additional good science on WUHAN-19 becomes available.

    — Which doctors to trust. For example, do not trust Fauci.
    — The actual danger of the WUHAN-19. Lethality is vastly below the initial models. The impact on healthy young adults and children is statistically low, though there are always outliers.
    — The medical system is ready to cope. Supplies of the CQ/AZ/ZN combo treatment are now available essentially everywhere.

The key to keeping the death rate down will be driven by protecting those with multiple pre-existing conditions. Staying away from the elderly and/or sick does not require shutting down the entire economy.

    PEACE 😷

Don’t kid yourself. Trump is going down in an epic landslide, and he knows it; that’s why his investor buddies are buying a stake in OANN –> so he can have a platform post 2021. A quarter million dead by election day because he let the virus “wash over America.” This crisis proves he’s unfit for the office.

All he had to do was stop all flights, quarantine NYC for a month, and implement mass testing and social distancing for 2 -3 months like many other nations successfully did. We could have had the best of both worlds — health and economy … but this guy was more concerned with the stock market and his reelection. And his paid republican operatives posing as dissident right ran countless blog posts downplaying the virus — comparing it to lighting strikes and bee stings and urging Twitter followers to shame and punch mask wearers and lying about … basically everything. In a year, it would have burned itself out in the third world or we’d have a vaccine. Either way, about 2 million American lives would have been saved. And let’s not kid ourselves, it really could go that high eventually.

0.7% x 70% U.S. population = 1.56 million. Adjust either of those number up by a little and we get 2 million. Overshoot effects actually may ensure maybe 80 or 90% of the population eventually gets Covid-19. Smh. The public won’t forget this, and there is no way this tyrant can cover it up either, which he and his sycophants are trying their best to now.

I voted for Trump in 2016, but this is the last straw. He’d been pushing it with his insane Iran war threats and lies and inaction over virtually everything he ran on, but this was a bridge too far. And his followers embracing black helicopter conspiracies and various other idiocies shows me they’re aren’t any better; nothing good will ever come from that crowd. Bye. See you on election night … well, some of you. I hope grilling season was worth it.

Wanna bet? You may see the stunning incompetence (Australia suffered 100 wu-wu deaths total, South Korea only 250) but as long as Trumpstein does the joo’s business, the joo media will reciprocate and give Der Don great coverage and a second term. Are you not suspicious when the stock market is down only 10% from its peak? The owners of business and finance are being made whole by the taxpayer and appear not to be nervous about the wu-wu at all, while the citizenry bend over and take their stimulus checks like the degraded $1200 whores they are. Give JooTV five months to massage the hive mind of the masses of asses, and by Nov.3 most normies will buy the idea that Trumpstein stick saved all of western civilization…..especially when the so-called opposition is a lying war mongering skunk like Stink Finger Joe and all the tacky self-serving special interest groups he represents. You think it is that simple? What about Americans overseas for work and vacation? Tell them to just hang out for a few months?

The virus has a 2 week incubation time with asymptomatic spreaders. It would be extremely difficult to keep it out of hubs like NYC or Chicago.

I don’t think he did a great job but Biden would have been worse.

That is why Trump will win. Independents aren’t going to buy the theory that the Democrats would have done a better job. Biden will flub and blub when asked about calling travel bans xenophobic. Pelosi was hugging Asians in Chinatown and De Blasio was telling people to eat out in March. These are the Democrats that would have done a better job?

Only Cuomo can beat Trump and the only way that can happen is for Biden to drop out and that ain’t happening. Biden will emerge from his subterranean lair to flub the debate and then lose.

    Wanna bet?

Yeah, this time I’ll take that bet. In the past, I would have said no. But this time there is just no way to cover it all up; 200k+ deaths by election day … or more. Trump knows this. That’s why he’s trying to take over the Post Office so he and fellow goose steppers can sabotage mail-in ballots, which he and his Faux News lackeys have been attacking — without evidence — for weeks. He’s going down and he knows it. He’ll try to rig the election using the Post Office, but Joe Biden is winning by such a large margin (9 points) that it won’t work.

I’ve never voted democrat before in my life, but I will this November. Trump has to go. The damage this imbecile could do in his second term is just too much to contemplate. We’ll almost certainly get wars with both Iran and Venezuela on behalf of Israel. Maybe even China. Probably also more trade wars as he seeks to deflect blame from his failures. And “record legal immigration” in his own words, which isn’t any different from what the democrats are doing anyway. Prepare yourself for the Trumpslap. It’s coming.

“You think it is that simple? What about Americans overseas for work and vacation? Tell them to just hang out for a few months?”

    1) Worked for Taiwan.

    2) Implicit in the statement were other efforts to be made in tandem — like testing and quarantines. Do I have to spell out every tiny detail?

    3) Yeah, it was that simple. All Trump had to do was sign a piece of paper. He could have adjusted guidelines after the fact.

Stop making excuses for this con man. He’s lied about everything and delivered nothing. “Most legal immigrants in history” lol. Total fraud.

  17. Insightful article. The alternative to Trump’s approach would be to continue to cower at home for the next 6 months, with continuing death toll and a ruined economy, which guarantees his loss. There is no way of knowing now if Trump’s pivot is a good idea from the viewpoint of public health, but politically it is a bold differentiator from the leftist power elite, who seem to want to turn the entire country into a feminized college snowflake safe-space. I think a lot of people will resonate with the message of “take precautions but let’s get back to close to normal life”.

It was not so simple. If Trump had early on stopped all commerce from China to include people flying in and closed down the entire economy, Buckleyite (movement) conservatives and libertarians would have called him out for being “in restraint of free market commerce and free trade.” He was in a dilemma known as a “Morton’s Fork.”

As the U.S. death toll from COVID-19 is now 74,000 and still rising at a rate of 2,000 a day, what is behind Trump’s strategic pivot?

That’s crap. There haven’t been 74,000 deaths from COVID-19 especially when health authorities admitted over counting by including everyone who died with COVID-19 but not necessarily from it. I think the real count is less than 1/3 of the official count.

A majority of Americans are today wary of unlocking the economy and opening up the nation. Yet, each week, more and more people are demanding that it be done.

The only people who are wary of “unlocking” the economy are welfare layabouts, journos, elected officials, government bureaucrats and the trust fund kids of the radical left and dissident right…..all of whom get paid no matter if we’re shut down or open.

To prove what a fraud these shelter in place edicts are Illinois Governors JB Pritzker routinely lectures people to stay inside and limit travel for their own good then sends his family to the state of Florida that’s in the process of reopening. Pritzker is just one of many Democrat governors who are trying to inflict as much economic damage on their states as possible in the hopes it can be leveraged into billions of dollars in bailout money and a restructured economy that left wing Democrats exert more control over.

Governors have no right to seize private businesses by declaring them “non-essential” without due process or just compensation nor can they dictate on what terms “essential” businesses can conduct business. Pat says nothing and instead just vomits out the establishment party line each week.

Trump has hardly minimized the deaths. If he had, 79 year-old Fauci and Scarf Lady would no longer be a part of his team. I hope that one of his more loyal lieutenants will turn him on to Drs. Erickson and Massini’s recent press conference, which was quickly banned by YouTube – For Telling the Truth! Those two doctors, or some like them, should immediately replace democrat operatives Fauci & Birx.

And Trump should stop with the daily, laughable press conferences. When he says, as he does daily, that he has saved “millions of lives” because of his quick actions, no one with an even remotely functioning brain believes him.

  24. @A123

Those sick and elderly in nursing homes already have extremely high death rates (over time 100%), and it is doubtful if C19 has forced them into the great beyond much faster than they would have died anyway. We are operating under the ludicrous assumption that they could have lived years longer in productive lives if not for C19. Please stop the insanity.

For the very old and very sick, death is a blessing which should not be feared. Prolonging their lives for a few days or weeks by intubating them is an unnecessary cruelty, but it is a gold mine for those hospitals and doctors living off of money from Medicare and Medicaid, and who routinely label them as dying from C19 so that they will receive larger reimbursements.

Obviously you flunked Constitutional law. State governors aren’t legislators and don’t get to declare certain businesses as “essential” and others “non-essential” while unilaterally dictating the scope of operation of businesses allowed to remain open. A state license just allows a private entity to conduct business in a particular state and sets occupancy restrictions. It doesn’t give the governor or any other elected state official a share in the ownership.

Instead of just trolling people with your proggy snark how about you post some original thoughts for once so we can troll the shit out of you?

Four more years of proxy joo rule is what Americans in their sloth deserve.

Whereas England and France and Germany and Canada and Australia and Austria and New Zealand all have governments and media that are fully independent of International Jewish supremacism?

These Satanic scum have bought every stinking government in the West, and own their media outright.

How are Americans in the ZUS any more complicit that Canadians or Brits?

Rothschild’s rot undermines all these nations, and owns all their media. New Zealand is the latest to demand their citizens disarm, like the Aussies before them.

At least Americans still have our guns, which is more than I can say for most nations of sheep.

On the day they come for the guns, is the day you’ll see the charactor of the quiet, law abiding American, when the goons arrive to disarm him.

“How about stop being a lazy troll and do your own research.”

You made the claim, you supply the sources when requested. That is how discourse works.

“That’s just your characterization of facts you don’t like.”

Except that is it not a fact that Democrat governors are trying to inflict as much economic damage on their states as possible. You’re overreacting per usual.

    “State governors aren’t legislators…”

    I never made that claim.

“and don’t get to declare certain businesses as “essential” and others “non-essential” while unilaterally dictating the scope of operation of businesses allowed to remain open.”

Actually, they do with state of emergency orders based on the recommendations of state health officials.

“It doesn’t give the governor or any other elected state official a share in the ownership.”

I also never made that claim. Care for some straw, man?

“Instead of just trolling people with your proggy snark how about you post some original thoughts for once so we can troll the shit out of you?”

Actually, I do post numerous original thoughts. You really need to pay closer attention.

  42. “The mainstream media and left-wing of his Democratic Party want the governors to keep the states locked down as the only way to avert a second wave of infections”

Paddy does not know why the media and democrats take the positions that they do.

  43. Originally it seemed Dems were attempting to tank the economy through lockdown to blame Trump and take the White House. Now it is very apparent that Dem governors and mayors are establishing themselves as power hungry totalitarians. Americans will not blame Trump for a bad economy, especially as he attempts to revivie it. Now it appears Dems’ plan is to continue lockdown and go for broke on vote by mail to steal the election.

The US has a much lower mortality rate than Belgium, UK, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Brazil, Iran, Canada, Mexico, Indonesia, Romania, Egypt, Hungary, Ireland, Algeria, Slovenia, on & on it goes, source: https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/mortality

    – Also, the US has the highest testing rate in the world, by far.

The Government will do what it does best: “fiddle the figures”. (on deaths, infections etc) Look how well they’ve done on inflation, GDP & unemployment over the last decades.

  48. @KenH

“Obviously you flunked Constitutional law. State governors aren’t legislators and don’t get to declare certain businesses as “essential” and others “non-essential” while unilaterally dictating the scope of operation of businesses allowed to remain open.”
Legislatures make Laws. The executive then “executes” those Laws.
Thus, everything depends on the individual Laws as to the powers it gives to the executive. Further, many Laws give the executive the power to make regulations. (ie to effectively legislate)
I would expect (& applaud) any business or individual who takes an executive to court for exceeding their powers.

  49. @Old and Grumpy

Old and Grumpy, I am a resident of PA also. The only show I watch on TV is Tucker Carlson. While he always goes after the tyrannical governors of Michigan, Maine, NY, NJ, Illinois, and California (perhaps others), I keep waiting for him to mention the extreme lockdown that Gov. Wolf has forced onto the residents of PA.

At least a few recently filed lawsuits have been initiated from officials in counties in SoWest PA (where I live), all of which have extremely low C19 death counts, but were left in the “Red” by our clueless gov under his “Red, Yellow, Green” system. Maybe that had an impact on Wolf’s changing these counties to Yellow on Friday. But no county is yet labeled Green, which means they can freely operate, and who knows how long that will take?

In any case, Gov. Wolf and his tranny Sec. of Health strike me as incompetent fools. With his stuttering pronouncements, which inspire zero confidence, he is becoming a laughingstock. I wish that Tucker had mentioned the situation in PA when he criticizes the actions of those other tyrannical governors. I hope he will still do so. And, a big Shout Out to KDKA Radio’s Wendy Bell, who has done great work in exposing the Wolf Admin., as well as the fraud at the heart of this plandemic.

Over the past month, it has been said on several threads on this site, America will disintegrate and become independent countries.

Why this is relevant is because there’s approx. 40% of the American population who believe they will see ‘the End of Days’ in their lifetime.

A Dakota Sioux, Floyd Red Crow Westerman has told of this prophecy: “We were told we would see America come and go” https://youtu.be/-XagZt80bTs

From 1970 they have even been bribed by the foreign money jet and access to TV owned by the foreign 5th columnist to make this forecast and use it as sale pitch to help fund and continue those very TV indirectly .

Lol its interesting to see the give and take on who’s the greatest, with ego Trump in one corner and Joe blow in the other as if this is the best America can offer, for if it is we are doomed, doomed, doomed but by election time all the faithful will be foaming at the mouth slobbering all over the ballots, as they vote for their party favorite, and six months down the road after he takes up the screws a little tighter they will say that well its somebodies else’s fault and run to do it all over again. The only question that remains is how long before we become like any other third world country, as poverty and the homeless keeps growing faster then the GDP.!!!

Strange but the youngest son was talking to a woman he knows, who works for the largest nursing home in the county (upstate N.Y.) stated that they haven’t had one death from the virus. The number they claim in the country was 74 last nite, and the county next door stood at 34 they didn’t list any deaths so it could have simply been the flu,so I wonder just how many deaths simply from the flu is used to rack up more to the virus>>>

  56. @Meena

Thanks for that Meena, yes I had heard that.

Its sad that the Evangelicals’ belief is based on a total misinterpretation as the Book says:

“the end of the world as we know it”

    [emphasis mine]

meaning that its do with our consciousness, since it includes the word ‘know’, but they interpret it to mean the end of physical existence.

Oh well, such is life. Sigh.

    Regards

  57. What will be Joe Biden’s argument to lead America, after having sat out the worst crisis since World War II in his basement?

Really! This ain’t Vietnam, Korea or the turmoil of the AIDS hoax.

I’ve seen numbers showing our workforce consists of 50%-60% local, State and Federal workers, the remaining are private industry. So right off the bat you have well over half the population sitting home, collecting full pay and benefits and pension-points who are going to shriek to the skies to ‘stay safe’ while delivering zero services. They don’t want to go back under those conditions of plunder. Oh, and the deciders are all collecting full pay while they sit home.

Private enterprise will go back to work, be taxed and receive zero services outside of police and fire. God knows when the kids are going back because the teachers, having gotten a taste of leisure will lean heavily on their unions to keep schools closed until it’s ‘safe’. Every sector of government services will remain closed as long as the recipients can keep it going. And they absolutely want to keep it going in order to blame Trump in November even as they demand their plunder and profit. Pretty creepy.

Any acute illness will kill elderly in nursing home including lack of water salt or simple urine infection , But they those illness don’t hop out and snare the nurses or the janitors .

Actually, the flu does this every year, there is just no media coverage of it. If a “pandemic” kills close to 100,000 Americans and the media does drop everything else and talk about it 24/7, did it happen? They estimate 80,000 flu deaths in 2018. Why wasn’t society shut down in 2018? Flu’s do routinely leave people open to opportunistic pneumonia infections that can and do cause permanent lung damage. Young people do die from the flu, including children. Children die at a higher rate of the flu than COVID-19.
Every death matters, but the reality is we can’t stop a disease – we have to do our best to protect the vulnerable and let it circulate among the healthier lower risk and use the low cost treatments that have been shown to work. Instead, we are just trading suicides and family annihilations for elderly COVID-19 deaths. In most things, risks can only be balanced, not eliminated. And it is best to keep a calm, cool head as we go about figuring out which policies are actually about protecting lives and which are about ushering in the next phase of the surveillance state.
