If Donald Trump loses the election, history will attribute his defeat to a pandemic that killed 200,000 Americans during his reelection campaign, and a historic depression deliberately induced to put the economy in a coma as the nation suffered through that pandemic.

But despite the worst hand dealt a sitting president since Herbert Hoover in 1932, Trump is by no means cooked.

Since the conventions of the DNC and RNC, Trump has narrowed the gap in several battleground states that will decide the winner of the Electoral College. One Florida poll found that Trump had erased Joe Biden’s margin and pulled even.

Trump’s denunciations of the riots that have gripped U.S. cities since the Memorial Day death of George Floyd have already forced Biden to come out of his basement to deplore the violence. And the contrast in their appearances has been dramatic.

Trump speaks out in the open, before huge crowds, in arenas and airport hangers. Biden, a socially distancing septuagenarian who is sheltering in place, looks more like an applicant for a retirement home residency. This may explain why Trump has made marginal gains among African American voters and more impressive gains among Hispanic voters.

Biden is also hurt by the mental and verbal lapses he seems to experience with every set of remarks, reinforcing the impression that he has lost more than a step to Father Time.

But Trump has had his problems as well since the GOP convention, beginning with book-length attacks on his character by his niece, Mary Trump, and his personal lawyer Michael Cohen.

This month brought an Atlantic article by editor Jeffrey Goldberg alleging that Trump had disparaged the sacrifices of dead and wounded U.S. soldiers from World War I, Vietnam and the Middle East wars.

Though Goldberg relied on anonymous sources to carry out his takedown of Trump, more than a dozen Trump staffers and advisers present at the meetings where Trump allegedly demeaned America’s warriors denied Goldberg’s allegations.

The Atlantic article was a kill shot aimed at the president by a hostile media. While it did not succeed, it drew blood, and the White House recoil testified to that.

Comes now “Rage,” the latest book by Bob Woodward, to which Trump contributed 18 interviews. The book is damaging because, at the least, a national debate about the issues raised by Woodward distracts massively from Trump’s campaign imperative — taking down Biden so that he is seen as an unacceptable alternative to Trump.

Biden’s strategy remains what it has been: Turn the election into a referendum on whether the American electorate wants four more years of Donald Trump. As Trump’s approval rating has been underwater since taking the oath on Jan. 20, 2017, such a referendum should result in a rejection of Trump and, de facto, a victory for Biden.

Trump must instead present this election as a binary choice: Which of the two, Biden or Trump, has the leadership capacity, the superior ideas on the critical issues, and the ability to carry out his agenda?

ORDER IT NOW

Trump needs to convert a Mr. Congeniality contest into a decision of whom you want to lead the nation in this perilous hour. Whom do you want in the Oval Office dealing with the current crises: Mr. Nice Guy or the guy who showed he could get the job done before the pandemic came ashore?

With seven weeks left in the campaign, Trump’s agenda of issues appears more appealing than Biden’s.

Trump wants to secure the border against any new flood of illegal migrants from the global south while Biden’s party is pro-amnesty and open borders, and favors sanctuary cities and abolishing ICE.

Trump wants to extricate America from the forever wars of the Middle East, as do most Americans. Where Biden is going to raise taxes by trillions, Trump is a proven low-tax and less-regulations leader.

Trump has appointed 200 federal judges and two Supreme Court justices and sought to elevate constitutionalists to the federal courts. Biden has thus far declined to engage on the issue.

On putting down urban anarchy, Biden is playing catch-up. His convention did not even address the issues raised by the Portland, Seattle and Minneapolis riots and the soaring murder rates in Chicago and New York.

On abortion, Trump has proven solidly pro-life, while Biden wants all taxpayers, including fellow Catholics, to subsidize what his Church teaches is the cold-blooded killing of the innocent unborn.

Trump needs to stay focused on the issues where the divisions are clear and compelling. The debates will show whether Joe has lost it and cannot be entrusted with the destiny of the republic.

    Litter box duty.

    .. and airport hangers.

Mr. Unz has questioned recently who now writes these columns. It appears that Mr. Buchanan didn’t even proofread this one.

Trump’s denunciations of the riots that have gripped U.S. cities since the Memorial Day death of George Floyd have already forced Biden to come out of his basement to deplore the violence.

Back in June, Mr. Buchanan wrote that “the killing of George Floyd was an atrocity that cries out for justice” (June 2), a “sadistic public execution” (June 9). More recently, he eased off with the ambiguously passive “death under the knee of” Mr. Chauvin. Now, in his last three columns, Mr. Floyd’s was a simple “death.”

Mr. Buchanan couldn’t care less about the official autopsy or the video footage suppressed by DA Keith Ellison because he, too, serves an Establishment that uses media-curated atrocities to keep the sheep fighting among themselves.

Trump has appointed 200 federal judges and two Supreme Court justices and sought to elevate constitutionalists to the federal courts.

Why no elaboration on the votes of the Trump and other GOP appointees on issues like Obamacare, same-sex marriage, the scope of employment discrimination statutes, etc.? Because that would allow readers to consider how the dramatic confirmation hearings and nail biting awaiting the next batch of decrees are just acts in the Beltway puppet show.

  2. If Donald Trump actually gave eighteen interviews to Bob Woodward, it indicates that he lacks the judgment to be president.

  3. As shown in this article, insiders from the Democratic Party already have plans in place should Donald Trump win the November election:

    https://viableopposition.blogspot.com/2020/09/what-happens-if-donald-trump-wins.html

And here we all thought that Russia was the “bogeyman in the closet” when it came to interfering in the will of American voters.

  4. Bemildred says:

Well I have to admit a focussed Trump would be interesting to see. What would Trump be like if he got his shit together? That’s his big advantage here, really, he might still be able to get his shit together, it’s pretty clear Biden can’t. Maybe the “debates” will prove me wrong. But I don’t think I can bring myself to vote for either one of them.

Excellent points…and absolutely correct. What is amazing is how many people fall for this Kabuki shit.

There is one party in this country…and you can support it by voting Republican or Democrat. Heads they win…tails you lose.

  6. TG says:

You should never use the words “Trump” and “Focused” in the same sentence, IMHO.

What would a ‘focused’ Trump look like? Well, probably a lot like Tulsi Gabbard. Tulsi who, you say? Exactly. A focused Trump would be ignored by the corporate press and rapidly become invisible. It is his very lack of focus that has allowed him to avoid the political fate of so many other more decent and focused politicians – and which prevents him from doing much once elected.

Trump is Bozo the clown. Team Biden is Caligula mated with one of those monsters from “Aliens”.

Biden the man is irrelevant: his 50+ year political career has been powered by one thing: he will do whatever his wealthy patrons pay him to dow without hesitation or shame. You don’t need many brain cells for that.

In the days when we used to have real journalists, there were three rules for evaluating a politician: look at the record, look at the record, look at the record. What they say doesn’t matter. How they perform in any kind of ‘debate’ has less relevance than a bathing suit contest. Here’s the bottom line:

Trump: will continue to bloviate, but having surrounded himself with ‘advisors’ that hate him and his agenda, he will continue to mostly govern like Hillary Clinton would have, although he will remain a thorn in the side of the elites because they still can’t quite control him. I think of him as sand in the gears of the machine of my enemy.

Team Biden: will be an utterly amoral instrument of the elites. For over 50 years, they have pushed for every betrayal of the American working class. We will have a flood of cheap-labor immigration. More bailouts for the rich, more crushing of the middle class and working poor. Team Biden has a track record of pushing for bankruptcy ‘reform’ that condemns the non-rich to a lifetime of debt slavery: perhaps they can bring back debtors prisons and labor camps? Maybe we can have child labor again? Or forcing middle class Americans to put up with massive Somali refugee camps in the middle of their neighborhoods, to be paid for with new and exciting taxes on the middle class – while the rich profit from all that lovely new cheap labor. And there will be a lot of anti-white official racism, because divide and conquer and reparations don’t apply to the rich. Oh, and more pointless overseas wars that only enrich politically connected defense contractors. And so on.

I’m not even going to hold my nose, but I’m voting for Trump just because he doesn’t seem to actually hate white people.

On putting down urban anarchy, Biden is playing catch-up.

And Trump is playing politics – running against his own government ala Gay Mulatto Soetero.

Yet abortion continues unabated – just like immigration, glowbug interventionism worldwide, Apple-exempting trade-deficit policy and the whole rest of the kabuki clown car of “promises kept.”

Why no mention that according to the CDC only 6% of these deaths are true COVID-19 deaths while the rest had an average of 2.6 comorbidities? The inclusion of that context would mean Buchanan wouldn’t get his article published in “free” America because nobody is permitted to depart from the party line that if a Democrat were president then COVID deaths would only be a fraction of 200K because Trump is a heartless buffoon who doesn’t know what he’s doing.

  12. I sure hope Trump can pull off a win – even though I don’t expect him to enact his domestic agenda, I think his foreign policy is better than Biden’s and that he’s less likely to get the country into any new wars.

That said, it’s hard to say just how the Floyd Riots will impact the election. I suspect that people don’t approve of the ambivalence with which the Democrats react to arson, looting, etc. At the same time, all of this is happening under President Trump. So it’s hard to imagine that people are going to flock to re-elect him in the expectation that doing so will put at end to the riots.

I’ve got this point explained in more detail here: https://www.twilightpatriot.com/2020/08/kyle-rittenhouse-and-hundred-days-riot.html

Tulsi focused? She was so focused that, when she dropped out of the race, she threw her support to Biden. By supporting the old Zionist war hawk, did Tulsi show her true colors? Why has she stayed in a war party where she’s obviously not wanted? Sounds like party over principles. Among her many former supporters (like myself) Tulsi is damaged goods.

A wannabe actor with a broken filter, frequently shocking and endlessly entertaining, consistently popular with the people, hated and feared by the majority of the upper class. You keep making this “supreme court pick” argument, but should know by now that when the Establishment wants anything, that’s what the Court will do. As there may be others thinking like you, I’m updating and reposting below (again) to help explain why I quit voting, especially with two crayons:

    ——

Justice Kennedy – who decreed the change in legal marriage – was a Republican choice for whom young Mr. Kavanaugh clerked before helping President Cheney with the Patriot Act to earn his first robe on the Swampville Circuit, later to be appointed by President Trump and confirmed after a farcical, boys versus girls food fight. Chief Justice Roberts was the one who nailed down Big Sickness for the pharmaceutical and insurance industries. Justice Gorsuch — appointed by President Trump — this summer wrote the opinion that arrogated the Congress’s legislative authority to expand employment discrimination laws. Just as important are the cases that the Court kicks for lack of standing, or declines to take up at all.

Like the “federal” elections held every November in even-numbered years and the 5-4 decrees of the Court, the nail-biting confirmation hearings are another part of the show that keeps people gulled into accepting that so many things in life are to be run by people in Washington, so we should pour our time and energy into the endless drama of Red v Blue politics. Mr. Buchanan for years has been proclaiming each The Most Important Ever.

I’m still inclined to the notion that the Constitution was intended, at least by some of its authors and supporters, to create a limited national government. But even by the time of Marbury, those entrusted with the powers have arrogated the authority to redefine them. In my lifetime, the Court exists to deal with hot potato social issues in lieu of the invertebrate Congress, to forebear (along with the invertebrate Congress) the warmongering and other Exceptional! “foreign policy” waged under auspices of the President, and to dignify the Establishment’s shepherding and fleecing of the people.

Why should a robed, unelected politician be redefining marriage or governing workplaces? Entrusted to enforce the Constitutional limitations on the others? Sure, questions like these are posed from time to time in a dissenting Justice’s opinion, but that ends the discussion other than in the context of replacing old Justice X with middle-aged Justice Y. Those of us outside the Beltway are told to tune in and root Red. And there are pom pom shakers and color commentators just like Mr. Buchanan for Team Blue.

But to put a stop to this, keep voting GOP…. Right.

That doesn’t mean they will always vote in the best interest of the country or try their best to follow the constitution.

Trump’s pick will be more likely to to protect gun rights than Biden’s pick. That isn’t debatable.

The two-party system has no solutions to offer. Stop legitimizing it with the same tired arguments we’ve heard since the 1960’s.

If you want to fly the “voting doesn’t matter” flag then go ahead. Just because you vote in the election doesn’t mean you support the two party system.

I don’t see the two party system facing the reality of race which is in fact a reason to vote against Biden. If it collapses then I want my guns.

Biden wants to ban AR-15s and sue the gun industry out of existence. Then there is the supreme court.

If you want to go sit in a hole and pretend this election doesn’t matter then go ahead. A lot of White people have been doing that since the 1860s.

Are you the one that posted a wall of text? Not sure who I am responding to. Choose a nick already.

    1. Asking again: you’re voting for Trump?

I think it is rude to ask people who they are voting for.

How do you expect Justice Kavanaugh to vote when the Heller issue comes back up, as it will with a “living Constitution” since Marbury?

He has a history of literal interpretation which is why liberals don’t like him. He is on record stating the semi-auto rifle bans are unconstitutional. The gun control crowd flipped out when he was nominated.

    3. [Same as #2, but for Gorsuch]

He is trying to rule as an apolitical judge so most likely moderate at worst. If Hillary had won she would have undoubtedly stuck in a “living constitution” liberal.

I have never heard or read about a multi-billionaire that could not focus. Never!!!

  46. @Thomasina

“It is easy to sit here in our armchairs and say, ‘Well, he didn’t get anything done.’ Try it. Run yourself, then get back to us.”

On the contrary he actually got quite a bit accomplished; just nothing for the benefit of American interests.

He had no trouble illegally occupying and attacking Syria; stealing Syrian oil; illegally seizing Venezuelan and Russian diplomatic property; giving Syrian land to Israel; trying to overthrow the Venezuelan government with a destabilization campaign involving threats, cyber attacks, illegal sanctions, etc.; walking away from the JCPOA agreement with Iran; trying to start WW3 in the Mideast by assassinating Iranian General Soleimani; moving the embassy to Jerusalem; starting a self-destructive trade war with China; exiting nuclear treaties and single-handedly trashing the concept of “mutually assured destruction” and replacing it with a “nuclear war is winnable” concept (which prompted the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists to move the “doomsday clock” closer to midnight than ever before); etc.

And he’s done all these things without any meaningful political opposition. No wonder he wants to be reelected so badly.

  47. “Trump wants to extricate America from the forever wars of the Middle East, as do most Americans.”

Just like he “wants” to drain the swamp, put Clinton in jail, cooperate with Russia, etc.? I wonder if Buchanan typed that ridiculous statement with a straight face.

If Trump “wants to wants to extricate America from the forever wars of the Middle East” then why doesn’t he do it; or at least, why doesn’t he stop making things worse?

Isn’t Buchanan even the slightest bit troubled by Trump’s reckless serial provocations against Russia, China, Iran and Venezuela? If Trump is reelected isn’t there the slightest possibility that China, Russia and Iran will start pushing back hard?

  48. @No Friend Of The Devil

“Anyone that has confidence in either Trump or Biden qualifies as mentally incompetent”

I will agree with you regarding Biden however myself, Mensa qualified, artist, and airborne trained US army vet, am far from mentally incompetent, and I will most certainly vote for DT, so to you I say my friend : Go screw your Dummkopf self.

  49. ” Trump can still pull this out”

Just this very line reveals that PB views the election as already lost for DT, doesn’t anybody else here grasp this?
