Most of the escalations by US-NATO in connection with Ukraine have boomeranged and resulted in a stronger Russia. The economic sanctions which were supposed to cripple Russia only pushed them to exit the US dollar system and emerge as independent and untouchable economically with BRICS and trade alliances elsewhere. The US did them a favor. The Ukrainian offensive only degraded their own military even further and has been reversed. They hoped for Russians to turn against Putin but he’s gained in popular backing. Now, with this increasingly reckless behavior the Russians may decide to get it over with more quickly and deny NATO-US any territory within Ukraine that can be used to shoot missiles from. Once that’s gone NATO-US wouldn’t dare fire anything from their own territory. They rolled the dice and lost. All this is schadenfreude and terrorism, not a viable policy.

Undoubtedly, this is true, but there’s got to be more to it than that. If it were simply that Ukraine cannot prevail absent NATO involvement, then why the charade? Rather than attempting to force Moscow to respond in kind, some NATO country could just attack Russia directly.

Russia, for its part, has presented itself as a rational, thousand-year-old civilization. To make its case to the world, Russia is not just engaging in rhetoric but, in point of fact, Russia is acting rational and civilized by not getting drawn into a fight with America. In contrast, America is hell-bent on provoking war and acting with impunity, challenging Russia to try and stop them.

All the Russians need to do is hold their ground and not respond with direct force and everyone gets to watch America behaving like a bandit. Contemporary sensors and signal processing are very good while subs are large objects. For a long time I have suspected that many submarines are readily detectable and can be pinpointed from a substantial distance. This information might be publicly suppressed even if all the militaries know it. Even so, subs still have value as mobile missile launch sites since retaliation against them does not occur on land, which probably reduces fallout. Even if the location of an attack submarine is known, it can still sink other surface vessels and may be slightly less vulnerable to long-range missile attacks compared to a destroyer of the same cost.

The Chinese announcement may be intended to add a bit of realism to the public discussion of nuclear arms.

That Simplicius link has some huge points. The very pro-Russian Simplicius admits that the Lockheed Martin ATACMS (Army Tac-tical Missile System) seems to be the most devastating weapon Ukraine has been given. It fires missiles at supersonic Mach 3 speed, which Russia’s world-class missile defence S-400 units are significantly failing to shoot down.

Russia can shoot down some but not all of them, and so when the million-dollar-plus-each missiles are fired in waves, some of them get through. They are knocking out Russia’s S-400 defence sites, leaving Russia vulnerable. So Russia is having its ability to defend its core homeland significantly impaired as these strikes continue, and likely must escalate in some major way.

Unless Russia can get that radar facility back on line pronto (and, unfortunately, it looks to be an unsalvageable wreck), I’m pretty sure that Russia loses what Scott Ritter would call escalation dominance. Nato can now unleash a nuclear first-strike decapitation of all Russian assets, including the entire civilian population in addition to all military and government functions. The only move that Russia can now use to pre-empt that is to release its own nuclear first strike ASAP. If Russia takes only half measures (like simply taking out a few American bases or nuclear launch sites, whether using either nuclear or conventional warheads) that act will be considered the casus belli for the Washington maniacs to respond with the full salvo of its entire nuclear arsenal. Either way, as Ritter always says, then we all die.

I don’t think this is such a big deal as you (based on the American website TWZ) make it to be. I suspect that none of Russia’s nuclear defense facilities is critical, all have redundancies, as it should be. This particular early warning system covered the South-East, South, and South-West cones but there are other such early warning systems in Russia that could cover the South and South-West cones. Probably the South-East cone (including the Med) could be more the exclusive realm of the Armavir site but the degree of damage by the drones didn’t appear to be substantial.

The Ukrainians are paid by us to try to hurt Russia while they can, that’s what they have to do to receive our Treasure. They tried to damage the closest Voronezh radar which is the Armavir site in accordance with their obligations. Our political leaders feel satisfaction and that’s pretty much it.

The worse part for the Russians is the insolence of this Ukrainian attack. To touch the early warning system for ballistic missiles and aircraft is extremely insolent. Since the attempted attack on the Armavir site tried to reduce visibility over the South-East, South, and South-West cones then the rational reaction by the Russians would be to make it more difficult to fly NATO aircraft over the Black Sea. Perhaps that’s what they’ll do.

Russia responded to the US nuclear moves by creating new nuclear weapons which cannot be easily countered by missile defenses. Russia explained they were doing this because the West dropped out of the nuclear arms control treaties, especially the ABM treaty. The Russians begged the US not to drop the treaties.

Russia began defending Russian sympathizers in Eastern Ukraine in 2015 against the genocide. Russia always considered these people as Russians who happened to live in the recently formed country called Ukraine. Much of Ukraine has been a stable part of Russia for hundreds of years. Russia repatriated Crimea in 2015 since it has been Russian since 1783 when it was conquered to stop slave raiders from the Ottoman Empire.

If Putin tries to go nuclear, do you think he is just going to randomly start shooting nuke missiles off, then sit back and watch the fireworks on CNN? Who would he target? Cities in Europe? Perhaps lob a few smaller ones at say the UK & Germany as an example and see what happens?

But of course, there is the issue of nuclear fallout. As the world wind blows west to east, any radioactive cloud might wind up over Russia. Or China and they won’t be happy about that.

Given what we have learned of Russian military capabilities since the start of the Ukraine war, it is likely that at least 50% of Russia’s nukes will not work, either having been stripped of useful parts that could be resold on the black market or poorly maintained over the years, or not able to get replacement parts due to sanctions.

If Putin shoots his nuke missiles at the USA, I would expect that most would be shot down. Some will get through. But a lot more of ours will then hit Russia, making large parts of Russia unlivable for decades or longer.

Assuming Putin would be buried in some deep bunker when he initiates a nuclear strike, a huge price would be set on his head and people left alive would be hunting him down. He would never be able to come out of his hole.

So, his country is radioactive and destroyed. Most Russian citizens are dead. Those still alive are suffering radiation poisoning to varying degrees and are starving. He can never leave his hideout. What exactly would he have accomplished?

I would like a peaceful resolution and the ideal would be one where Putin goes home or is replaced. But I would be happy to see an armistice that Ukrainians feel is acceptable.
