Unlike all of my articles of the past several years, this one will have no photographs. I apologize. Since arriving in Germany in late September, I’ve visited nine other countries, and have written about and photographed Germany, Singapore, England, Poland, Hungary, Turkey and Ukraine. Though I’ve been to the Czech Republic three times, I couldn’t quite come up with the right angle to discuss it, so with just over a week left before returning to Philly, I thought about going down to Usti nad Labem or Most, two towns in Northern Bohemia, to examine its Gypsy situation.

In 1999, Usti nad Labem attracted attention when it built a 2 meter high, 65 meter long wall down the middle of a street to separate Gypsies from other Czechs. The New York Times quoted the town’s mayor, Ladislav Hruska, “This wall is about one group that obeys the laws of the Czech Republic and behaves according to good morals, and about a group that breaks these rules—doesn’t pay rent, doesn’t use proper hygiene and doesn’t do anything right. This is not a racial problem. It is a problem of dealing with decent and indecent people.” After much international condemnation, the wall was torn down two months later.

In 2011, Baia Mare in Romania built a similar wall, for which its mayor was fined $1,530 by the central government. Catalin Chereches ignored its ruling to tear it down, however, and had art students paint murals on it. It’s now a work of art, he declared. At the next election, townspeople reelected him by a landslide. In 2013, 13 more Gypsy walls were built in Romania.

In Slovakia, Kosice (pop. 240,688) and Ostrovany (pop. 1,975) have erected Gypsy walls.

The first Gypsy I’ve ever heard of was Django Reinhardt, perhaps the greatest jazz guitarist ever. Seventeen, I was living in Northern Virginia, and there were no Gypsies at my high school, Thomas Jefferson. Of course, you can’t judge a population by its most accomplished and famous members, since they’re not just more talented than the rest, but usually better looking and more charismatic. Bruce Lee (one quarter German) is no more representative of his people than Denzel Washington.

When I was a housepainter in Philadelphia, I had a Czech coworker. He told me that “All Europeans hate Gypsies,” and in his town, Gypsies would steal people’s laundry from clotheslines.

From 2002 to 2004, my wife and I lived in Certaldo, Italy. Going to Florence often, we would see Gypsies all over. I saw them lounging around the Piazza Santa Maria Novella at dusk, and making quite a mess of it with their littering. There were trash cans around, but that took some effort to reach, so why not just leave all these food containers, tissue paper and bottles right there? I stumbled upon a rotund, middle-aged Gypsy woman pissing on the street. She didn’t seem too concerned about hiding herself. Exiting a train, I had to step over a Gypsy woman who was plopped right by the door. She didn’t care that she was blocking the way. It’s also safe to assume she hadn’t bought a ticket.

When a Gypsy woman stuck a hand into my wife’s purse, she had to slap it and shout to scare the Gypsy away.

An American couple visited us in Certaldo. Within half an hour of getting off the train in Florence, the woman saw a bunch of Gypsies. Seconds later, she reached into her bag to find that her purse was already gone and, with it, 500 Euros. Experienced travelers, this couple had been all over the world and were living in Japan. There are no Gypsies in Japan.

In January of this year, I met a Vietnamese restaurant owner in Zgorzelec, Poland. Our conversation touched on the economy of Poland vs. the CzechRepublic. Without prompting, he suggested that Poland will be better off in the long run because they have many fewer Gypsies. He then recounted four Gypsies who ordered lots of food at his place. After all the dishes were brought out, they claimed that there was hair in each one, so refused to pay. Knowing any argument would result in a huge commotion, with plates and glasses possibly thrown around, and maybe even violence, he just let them leisurely finish their free feast. It wasn’t worth it to ruin the evening for his other customers.

Ask just about any European, and you can hear similar stories. Though living in Europe for just over three years altogether, I’ve seen and heard enough to be very leery of Gypsies. In Leipzig, however, there are only a few, and they mostly just play music or beg. A fashionably dressed young Gypsy sits outside upscale Restaurant Weinstock nearly every day.

Online, you can find a torrent of appalling accounts in a dozen languages about Gypsy misbehaviors. Well intentioned employers talk of hiring Gypsies, only to see them show up late habitually, miss work or steal tools. Others talk about Gypsies stealing everything from kiddie bikes to manhole covers. It is remarkable that one group of people can accumulate, in practically every country they’ve been in over the centuries, some of the worst stereotypes. Perceived as indifferent to education, regular employment and assimilation, they are notorious for stealing, begging and lying. On the positive side, they are acknowledged as gifted musicians.

Even with hatred, stereotypes don’t have to be negative. Most Vietnamese, for example, will readily admit that Chinese are more industrious and commercially astute than Vietnamese, and basically honest. The evidences are just too overwhelming to argue otherwise. Though stereotypes are unfair for ignoring individual differences, they’re not necessarily inaccurate as general descriptions.

There’s a Russian saying, “A Gypsy does not human feel, if he has no chance to steal.” Until 1783, one could kill a Gypsy in England without punishment, and even the tolerant Republic of Venice allowed the same with a 1558 law.

ORDER IT NOW

The Weimar Republic banned Gypsies from public swimming pools and parks. Interestingly, the Nazis concluded that Gypsies were originally pure as Aryans in India, but trekking across Europe for more than 600 years, they became polluted by mixing with other ethnicities. For centuries, Gypsies were often fingered whenever a child went missing. Deciding that Gypsies were mostly “social misfits” or “professional criminals,” the Nazis started by sterilizing Gypsies, then ended up killing perhaps half a million, or 25% of its population in Europe. With the European Union’s open border policy, Romanian Gypsies have flooded into Germany, and here, their incarceration rate is 20 times that of German citizens.

In Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, the Gypsy unemployment rates hover around 80%. In the CzechRepublic, it’s 70%.

Though the United States actually has a million Gypsies, they’re practically invisible, so cause almost no animosity. Besides the Gypsy fortune tellers, they have mostly blended in. A five minute walk from my South Philly apartment, my friend Beth has a little café, with Gypsies living over it. Waiting until she’s busy, thus preoccupied, they would come down and grab several soda cans and toss her but a dollar. They would chuck garbage bags from a second floor window into a neighbor’s yard.

Ah, but we don’t know nothing! Gypsies have a very strict code for what’s pure and impure, for what’s clean and unclean. Since to keep garbage inside the house is filthy, it’s best to get rid of it as soon as possible. Gypsies, then, are very hygienic. By hypocritically and pathetically covering up our multifarious wastes and waiting sheepishly for trash day, the rest of us are actually pigs.

Wherever they show up in numbers, Gypsies alter the locals’ behavior. In 2009, I visited a friend of a friend in Bellows Falls, Vermont (pop. 3,165). Charlie didn’t even bother to give me keys, since he never locked his house door. Apparently no one in town did. Though primarily white, BellowsFalls also had some blacks and Hispanics. You can be sure the mild, fine folks of BellowsFalls would have to change immediately if there were Gypsies among them.

Having been in Europe since the 14th century, Gypsies can claim to be native to all these countries, and yet they have been persistently shunned and despised by their neighbors, and it’s not primarily because of their race, as their defenders would like to you to think. Since Gypsies who don’t steal, beg and wreck everything are hardly recognized as Gypsies, one should talk of a revulsion against Gypsy behaviors, and not a hatred of their race. It is essentially not racism.

Gypsies have no nation and want none, and it’s hard to imagine one run by Gypsies, acting like Gypsies, being anything but an unprecedented disaster. You can’t have an economy based on loafing, begging, singing, picking pockets and stealing anything that’s not nailed down. Speaking of which, many Gypsies believe one among them was the smith of the nails for the crucifixion, and that’s why they’re eternally cursed. Others believe a Gypsy stole a fourth nail meant to secure Jesus’ head or heart to the cross, and this means they’re forever entitled to steal as a thank you from God.

When Canada started accepting Gypsies as refugees, the Czechs were ecstatic, but that process has stopped, and even Angela Merkel isn’t waving a placard with “Gypsies Welcome.” The Gypsy situation tests the contention that all cultures can coexist if we just tolerate each other. A group may be incompatible with a society’s norms, but what can it do if such a group has justifiable, historical roots? Individually, most people simply flee from such predictable nuisances and/or dangers.

It was with this train of thoughts that I contemplated going down to the Czech Republic one more time. I could park myself at U Pristavu, a bar right on Maticni Street, the one with the former wall. At the very least, I could see and photograph the contrast between Gypsy and non-Gypsy dwellings. Of course, they might just chase me away or beat me up, but whenever you leave your front door, something bad may happen anyway. For the past seven years, I’ve visited some of the worst places in the US, as in Camden (repeatedly, even at night), Gary, Oakland and Detroit, etc., and during this stay in Europe, I’ve prowled completely unknown cities at all hours, and I’m still here, I think.

If I don’t go to Usti ad Labem now, I’ll never likely have another chance. I may never have an extended stay in Europe again. On the other hand, I’m exhausted, having just returned from a taxing trip to Ukraine, with two 24-hour bus rides squeezed into a week. Further, whenever I travel, I’m on the streets nearly all day, in any weather. Like a Rom, I roam. Actually, your stereotypical Gypsies don’t so much roam as loiter. In Europe, many of them lurk around train stations.

Money was also a consideration. Though I always traveled as cheaply as possible, I’ve spent a tidy sum already. Still wishy-washy, I decided to take a quick, stress-free trip to Hamburg, a place I had never been.

Leaving my Leipzig apartment at 3:35AM on a Wednesday, I would not be back until 6:15 on Thursday, meaning I would spend nearly 27 hours outside, inside a bar or café, or on the train. These extremely long days are not atypical, since I always strive to maximize my travel budget and time. The day turned out to be cold and drizzly, and I thought Hamburg mostly sterile and charmless, with the famed seediness of the Reeperbahn rather canned. Still, I managed to take some nice photos, including a mural of Istanbul’s Blue Mosque in front of an actual mosque, a poster announcing the 20th celebration in Hamburg of Black History Month, a sticker of Kim Jong-Un as a centaur, and one that said, “Merkel muss weg!” [“Merkel must go!”].

The round-trip from Leipzig cost but 28.50 Euros, but the catch was a 4+ hour layover in Berlin in the middle of the night. Fine, I would just mellow out in some coffee shop or McDonald’s, whatever that’s open in the spectacular Hauptbahnhof, perhaps the most impressive train station I’ve ever seen.

ORDER IT NOW

Having ordered a milk coffee, I sat in Backwerk and thought about the rather lame day, but hey, not every trip can be mind blowing. Zum Silbersach was a bar with character, though, and I did hit it off with an old fart. Leaving Backwerk, a friendly frau suggested that I should move to her former seat, since it was right beneath the heater, thus warmer. I smilingly thanked her, but decided to stay where I was, since that chair was more comfortable. With my camera bag on the floor next to me, I stretched out.

Just across the Spree from the Hauptbahnhof, I had given a poetry reading in 2005 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. I was treated so well then, with my wife and me put up at a hotel for five nights. Truth is, I’m no fan of huge, cosmopolitan Western cities such as Berlin, Paris, London or New York. I want to feel out of place when I travel. Still, Berlin has many wonderful associations for me. I don’t just think of Fassbinder, for example, but also Pham Thi Hoai, one of Vietnam’s best writers. She lives in Berlin. We had a wonderful meal there with poet Nguyen Quoc Chanh in 2005. There’s also a huge portrait of Joseph Beuys inside Ständige Vertretung, which I’ve only seen from the outside, considering its prices.

When you’re exhausted, your thoughts can get ridiculous, and I caught myself wondering if I had tipped the bartender in Zum Silbersach too much. Irritated by my own pettiness, I noticed a bunch of young men goofing around just outside Backwerk. By appearance and language, they weren’t German, I remember thinking, but Berlin (and Hamburg too) are filled with foreigners, and I was in a train station, after all. I heard a sound right behind me, which I thought was someone throwing something into the trash can.

I spaced out for a few more seconds, then decided to migrate downstairs to McDonald’s. Fully enclosed, it would be warmer, I thought with pleasurable anticipation. Reaching for my bag, however, I discovered that it was gone. Looking around, I tried to will it back into being, but it was really gone. Not only were my expensive Canon 50D and its two lenses stolen, but so was my passport. Erased, the Hamburg photos. Disappeared, the Ucraina stamps.

The thief had apparently walked out of Backwerk with my rather bulky bag inside his, which I now assume he had folded up and concealed inside his jacket, walking in. As the cashier in the tiny shop was not far behind me, there was probably an accomplice to distract him. Those goofs laughing and pushing each other in front of me were also likely accomplices. It worked, for I remember smiling at their good natured buffoonery.

As if mocking me, there was an ad in the station for the movie Django Unchained. Of course it wasn’t about Reinhardt, but I sure got the joke.

Postscript: within 12 hours of this incident, half a dozen of my blog readers, plus Ron Unz, have chipped in very generously to replace my camera and lenses. This, I will do when I get back stateside. I thank everyone for supporting me through the years, for without you, my photo and political writing project would have died a long time ago.

    Linh Dinh recites:

“the Nazis started by sterilizing Gypsies, then ended up killing perhaps half a million, or 25% of its population in Europe”

    That is unfounded nonsense.

There is not a shred of proof for that claim. A claim, like the unfounded ‘extermination of homosexuals’ crap, that is meant only to buy votes for the impossible & laughable ‘6M Jews & gas chambers’.

Very interesting topic. I am from Slovakia, where they form like 8% of population (officially 2%) and it is certainly the biggest problem of Slovakia – long-term unemployment, crime rate, life expectancy and so on. But almost no government attempted to do something with it, they spent a lot of money, but not efficiently, so no real programmes working to integrate them started.

I would say that like quarter of them is integrated, but rest of them lives in separate “villages”, the case of Košice is unique, as they usually do not live in cities, while in Czech republic they live almost exclusively in cities – the real estate prices in those parts of cities are a joke. What should be added, that majority of Gypsies in Czech republic are originally from Slovakia, who settled there during the communist Czechoslovakia, especially in areas where the German minority was sizable pre WW-II. And while in the communist Czechoslovakia one could freely move, but you can say it was done by the government.

I’ve not lived in Italy, but the above hate-mongering screed snippet pretty well describes many Spanish males (not Gypsies), inclusive of many (not Gypsy) pick-pockets in Barcelona.

I expect Linh Dinh, of course he could never admit this, very much appreciates those peculiar Germans whose streets, yards and homes are squeaking clean but have filthy souls that pine for the 3rd Reich. That would make perfect sense, actually, considering the Nazi elements running Ukraine are entirely neglected in Dinh’s preceding article ‘Broken Ukraine.’ It likely would never occur to him Ukraine’s problems, laid entirely at the foot of the USA, are as much Germany’s responsibility when propping up rule by admirers of Stephan Bandera and the Galacian SS Division, speaking of (not Gypsy) filthy people:

    http://ronaldthomaswest.com/2014/03/25/germanys-martyrs-of-the-maidan/

It will do to go on to note, Germany, having bled the (not Gypsy) Greeks to death, the Germans would be looking for new blood banks to rob like a ‘Vampire in Las Vegas’, it’s a cheesy film:

    http://ronaldthomaswest.com/2014/06/30/the-ascension-of-morons/

And when it comes to the decidedly (not Gypsy) sleight-of-hand in geopolitics, (the very much not Gypsy) ‘mutti’ outclasses any mere street pick-pocket:

    http://ronaldthomaswest.com/2015/02/12/mutti-piggies-and-the-minsk-peace-accord/

Linh Dinh is typical of the European culture’s class of bourgeois whose concealed dirt within out-classes (by far) those in plain view who so horrify him. BTW, I’ve lived in Wiesbaden, Berlin & Leipzig (five years aggregate in Germany) and had no problem with Gypsies other than infrequent mild annoyance. As is true of anywhere, and any people, there are the good ones and the bad ones … so tell me, Linh Dinh, how is the petty crime of some Gypsies gives greater offense than the geopolitical crimes of certain Bavarians, where it is claimed the streets are so clean one could dine on them without revulsion?

From time to time, some Polish news site posts about Poles comitting crimes in Netherlands, UK, or Germany. And then, some time after that you can find out that in quite a few cases those “Poles” are gypsies.

A gypsy family lived in my house. They were removed by anti-terrorist brigade (kid you not), and we had to renovate the entrance to the house, as the gypsies break the glass door during some commotion. Other gypsy family hired a flat in a house next to ours and once the husband was throwing something from the window, down at his lamenting wife.

A gypsy once entered my father’s shop and asked for money. My father told him that if the boy would swept a sidewalk in front of our shop, my father would pay him. A boy SPIT on my father and left. Next day we had dirty window to our shop, as someone thrown some stinky mixture on it, fortunately without breaking the glass.

Some time ago a gypsies beat a women journalist. I discussed the case with an educated gypsy on internet. He assured me that it was all police and journalist work, because actually the beating was a just punishment, according to gypsy laws. He couldn’t quite grasp my point of view, that in Poland only Polish law should be obeyed, and no people can be exempt from the rule of Polish law.

I really wish some stupid politician in Canada or USA would invite all Polish gypsies, that he would give them free citizenship and free accomodation, plus some hefty welfare cheques.

  5. Discard says:

I first heard about, rather than read about, Gypsies, from nurses. They despised them. You get a Gypsy in the hospital and a mob follows. Theft, theft, and more theft. Even stethoscopes off your neck.

  6. Gypsies are inconvenient but far, far not as threatening and dangerous as muslims, also they have a much lower impact on the surrounding population than blacks, because they essentially stay among their own. Their only contact to non-Gypsies is typically stealing, or the welfare-office, but apart from that they leave everybody alone

    Gypsies are obligate parasites.

  8. Unzerker says:

In my country, the Netherlands, Gypsies were literally hunted to extinction in the 18th century. But it wasn’t limited to Gypsies. All travelers were treated like this.

It seems to me that all travelers have a similar parasitic behavior. Some more than others of course. I can remember a few years ago a lot of news stories about Irish travelers in our country. It was little different from the stuf you hear about gypsies.

  9. Rehmat says:

The Gypsies (Roma) world population is estimated to be between 10-12 million and great majority of them live in Central and Eastern Europe. Small Roma communities are also found in Iran, India, Turkey, Egypt, France and the US. Most East European Roma are Christians or Muslims while in Turkey, Egypt and Southern Balkans, they’re predominantly Muslims.

Dimitrina Petrova in “The Roma: Between a Myth and the Future”, says that all Gypsies are not necessarily Roma. For example, Jevgjit in Albania; the Ashkaelia and Egyptians in Kosova and Mecedonia; the Travelers in Britain and Ireland; and the Rudari and Beash in Hungary, Romania and other countries. According to Dimitrina speaking Romani language is not a necessary identity characteristic.

Nazi regime carried the genocide of Roma resulting in the death of approximately one million Roma and Gypsy men, women and children. However, while 150,000 German Jews took part in Nazi Army, there is no historic record of Roma or Gypsies collaborating with the Nazis.

Seyfeddin Kara in his article, titled ‘Plight of the Roma Muslims in Bulgaria’, wrote: “Anti-Islamic sentiment in Bulgarian society dates back to the time of Ottoman rule in the Balkans which lasted 500 years. After independence, the founders of Bulgaria redefined the people and places that comprised the land in an effort to create their nation-state. During this process, Islam came to be regarded as a strong reminder of Ottoman “occupation”, while Muslims became the “others”, to be either expunged or exiled. As acknowledged in the 2001 Durban Conference Declaration, paragraph 2; when racism is combined with “sex, language, religion… victims can suffer multiple or aggravated forms of discrimination.” In this regard, despite the fact that they also suffered discrimination and racism, Christian Roma were better off than Muslim Roma. They had better housing, better living conditions, better job prospects and indeed better reputation. It was clear that due to their common religion, Bulgarians empathize more with the Christian than Muslim Roma…..

  10. Anyone I have ever known who has had any real contact with Gypsies develops a loathing for them that I at first found hard to believe. It is approximated by the sentiment that most normal people exhibit towards an infestation of cockroaches. In the face of such universal disapprobation it’s hard to dismiss this as prejudice.

I’ll just add that in the US we have a small Roma population that tends to keep a low profile, e.g., in Boston selling cheap paper flowers for exorbitant amounts, but there is another population descended from Irish Travelers that is notorious to police departments across the USA for the scams they run, most often fake home and yard repairs.

  11. Like Jews, gypsies have managed to make themselves despised everywhere they’ve set foot for as long as they’ve existed. I suppose it’s because everyone else is racist?

  12. Macilrae says:

The further we are removed from them, the more charitable our opinion. The article very accurately captures the Eastern European opinion of the Gypsies. As it goes on to say, when they have been assimilated, they are hardly distinguishable from the natives and so this is not a racial thing – it is yet another case of a toxic culture endemic in a minority which clashes horribly with the indigenous one.

There are two wonderful books by an Irish professor, Walter Starkie, who, in the late 1920s, travelled in Spain and in Bohemia as an itinerant musician and studied the Gypsies at length. He did nothing to dispel the prejudice – the very justifiable prejudice – but he observed and admired the brilliance of the Gypsy musicians and how, despite the hatred, a Gypsy could safely come into a tavern and play his violin (or whatever instrument) and hypnotize everybody present; departing very much the better off. Don’t forget that Flamenco music is hugely Gypsy in its origins – again, the tavern players.

In UK, Gypsies are well known, though the hatred is diluted and they are officially called Roma or, by the police who know them only too well, “Travellers”. Again and again these days you hear of British people complaining about the surge of immigration from Europe – particularly Eastern Europe: it’s the biggest single reason for the anti EU sentiment. “Romanians” are particularly disliked mostly because the majority arriving are Gypsies and they instantly apply for “benefits” for their large and feral families (10% of the Romanian population are Gypsy).

North Americans are completely ignorant of all this and have been taught that the Roma are an oppressed and blameless minority – victims (of course) of mindless ignorance and prejudice. Had they lived in Baia Mare, that hellish town, for a few months they would see things differently.

I’ve found the Bavarian et al “soul” to be kinder and gentler than most. People vote with their feet, and I notice they often make a point to move to places built and maintained by Germans; they seek out and borrow money from Bavarian banks. Nobody seeks out and moves to a Gypsy settlement.

We notice Nazis more because when it came time to immanentize the eschaton, the Germans applied their proficiency and did a notable job. But let’s not kid ourselves; all peoples, from the Turks to Australian Aboriginals, carry the spiritual drive to, paraphrasing the Vietnamese colonel, “kill all they send so that they will bother us no more.”

Looks like the author got the Gypsy experience although not in the way he was expecting it. Romania and the other countries with large Gypsy populations have had this golden opportunity handed to them by the EU to divest themselves of this group by sending them westwards. The pickings are easier, the countries wealthier plus the good-hearted people of the west are so liberal and just love those free-spirited Gypsies.
One good, funny movie featuring Gypsies is Emir Kusturica’s ‘Time of the Gypsies’ (foreign, subtitled, not for children or the squeamish).

Let’s not kid ourselves? Ok. Nearly everyone is well behaved in their own community. But there is always that ‘nuanced’ moment… such as the time I was strolling with a 1/2 black friend, a woman & a German and we encountered the several typical Bavarian reactions (assuming we were a mixed race couple, no doubt.) Judging from the reaction, you’d have thought we’d slapped them in the face. We both noticed but as she noted “I’m used to it.” And then went on the explain how she routinely encountered shock and resentment at her ability to speak a more flawless German, whether proper, or her native southern dialect, in the case of insisting on attention from those many shopkeepers who’d have preferred she did not cross the threshold of their establishment –

Racism runs deep in Germany, particularly in the south (and more recently the east.)

I have to laugh at Linh Dinh, I spent my last months in Germany living in Leipzig. There are very few gypsies there. I suspect he needs someone to look down on. I’d never insulted those several Vietnamese prostitutes I’d given business to as a young soldier, not then and not since. But it’d be easy to smear them with stereotype… however I’d prefer to point out what a prostitute Linh Dinh has become, a prostitute of a higher order, I mean how easy is it to pick on those of lower social station from the heights of some ivory tower? Easy, certainly, but not very smart; recalling there are laws in Germany could get him banned from ever entering the country again were the German authorities to have essays such as this one brought to their attention, for inciting racial or ethnic hatred.

Speaking as the proud owner of a Canon 50d and a lady’s purse Canon P&S always in my pocket, I write to ask if a Canon 50d plus 2 lenses isn’t vastly out-of-place and technically maladroit when travelling and meaning to take photos. Hard to believe that you nodded off in the middle of the night in a public space near the Berlin Hauptbannhof with a camera bag at your feet. I’m 82 and recently decided not to renew my US passport ($110! – yikes) because I doubt I’m going out of country. I had $3000 American in my pocket in the middle of the night in Paris once (~2005) because we were locked out of an apartment in the 10th district. Trying to make a telephone card work inside a public telephone booth on the avenue amidst young African blacks pretending to call home was thrilling (in a bad way) but somehow I made the telephone card work and went elsewhere. Amusingly, V.S.Naipaul in a recent book reported the same phenomenon in Berlin.

Romania did nothing to send the gypsies west. They move across Europe of their own accord even before Romania was admitted into Schengen and Romania takes them back every time they get expelled. Plus, Romania has now countless affirmative action programs for gypsies.

Mr. West, yours is a truly despicable comment. You casually write that you “expect Linh Dinh . . . very much appreciates those . . . filthy souls that pine for the 3rd Reich.” You couldn’t write two sentences in your greasy little tirade without working in that Mr. Linh is a “hate-monger[er]” and appreciates certain “filthy souls.”

Ronald West experienced nothing more than “infrequent mild annoyance” with Gypsies. Well, then. That’s it. The template. And the best you have to offer on the question of Gypsies in Europe is that “there are the good ones and the bad ones.” Now that’s what I call insight. No doubt there are good Muslims and bad ones. Good communists and bad ones. How our understanding of history can be advanced! But Ronald West knows who the filthy ones are in this world.

Perhaps you missed the part of Linh’s article where he describes public urination, theft, and other acts of astonishing anti-social behavior. Presumably the fact that non-Gypsies would actually want to build a fence to protect themselves from Gypsies is evidence in your mind of some non-fact-based, free-floating “hate” that just drifts into the minds of filthy souls.

Here’s a thought to keep in mind: If one sets out to write an article on Gypsies or storing vegetables, one is not obligated to cover in that article the crimes of the Third Reich, Copernicus’s difficulties with the Church, or the crimes of Merkel and Obama.

The three young men playing around and causing a distraction while the accomplice steals Linh Dinh’s bag reminds me of the “alleged” $900 billion that went missing in a shipment to Europe (electronic or otherwise) to the owners of the Federal Reserve as the bailout checks were being dispensed in DC (circa Q2/Q3, 2009). The behavior of the Gypsies and the Jewish central banking cartels is largely a matter of degree, governed by sophistication, polish and long term planning. Neither the Gypsies nor the Jews were exterminated in Europe in any large numbers during WWII, by the Germans or Stalin. They live on in large numbers, parasites on the body of Western humanity and its brain-dead leadership. One day they will deal with the Chinese, who are markedly less driven by Christian altruism and the refined gullibility that seems to accompany the same.

  34. @Ace

“Perhaps you missed the part of Linh’s article where he describes public urination, theft, and other acts of astonishing anti-social behavior”

I don’t recall seeing any identifiable Gypsy perform public urination but it was common to see Germans do this, alongside the road particularly (not illegal is my understanding), between parked cars, and behind buildings, it’s an everyday event. Ethic Germans are arrested for crimes everyday, it’s not like some event largely limited to Gypsies or other ‘auslanders.’ Of Berlin’s numerous homeless, most seem to be White (non-Roma) Europeans. One could as easily bash them as losers and paint the entire society responsible as unjust (or criminal.)

That doesn’t negate their outsized role as a criminal underclass in most of central and eastern Europe. You can pretend they aren’t a criminal underclass, but that doesn’t make it so.

The same pattern all the time. Healthy apples prefer to stay on the side of his fourth cousins criminals than the side of other people from other ethnic backgrounds who are minimally decent.

The same happen with blacks and Hispanics.

    vaguely ” gypsy live matters # ”

This primitive sense of tribalism that is more important to stay on the side of their ethnic group, including those who are natural criminals, than from the side of decent people of all races, shows us how complicated is to explain the basics of rationality to most of the people.

Criticizing the evident dysfunctionality of your group, whether race, ethnicity, nation, sexual preference, urban tribe, etc… is a genuine demonstration of altruism, because only one who wants to improve your group is what really shows zeal for him and that may indeed do something concrete than just cry respect when lack minimal civility to a large proportion of the population you have descendence.

What I find fascinating about you is that you are perfectly willing to deny genocides for which there is ample proof while, at the same time, accepting as genocide cases that lack proof. The Palestinian case is an object lesson here.

I fully agree that the occupation of Palestinian territory is 100% wrong and absolutely unjustified under any circumstances, and I further believe strongly that Israel has committed ethnic cleansing and continues to. However, to call it genocide ignores several key points. First, the grand total number of Palestinians killed by Israel in the last 78 years is 40,000 — that includes both civilians and people fighting in armed resistance. The United States lost more people in a war you didn’t serve in: Vietnam. Moreover, the Palestinian population has grown by nearly 500% since 1947.

In short, if that’s genocide, it’s the most inefficient genocide ever committed.

A former (Croatian) acquaintance from a research project had studied Roma and their language(s) in some depth. According to him, not all branches of the Roma habitually steal but some do and when dealing with Roma as an outsider it’s vital to know if you’re dealing with a stealing branch or not. And the stealing branches wander around a lot more creating an outsized bad image for the more inclined to assimilate though group morality makes it difficult other Roma publicly.

His description sounded very caste-like, down to (in the musical branches) specific families specializing in specific instruments or functions “only certain families sing” he said. I used to watch a Roman gypsy music channel and the same family names appeared again and again.

In recent years more have been pushed into theft because much of their traditional economic base of tinkering and the like has disappeared.

In Central SEastern Europe inbreeding is also a real problem (a lot of Roma children in Hungary look kind of….. syndromy). Finding healthcare is a problem because public doctors don’t want to take them on because of the complications.

The cops are, of course, completely uninterested, and gypsies tend to be good at working the system. For example, there are families where most of the men are called John Smith – this makes it hard to track their criminal records, or insurance details.

Of course, many are decent, law abiding folk. It’s a very sticky lifestyle, though. A Gypsy lady once told me she couldn’t sleep in a house without feeling imprisoned. It makes sense – humans were all nomads once. But the economic basis – seasonal farm work and metalworking services – no longer exists.

You do realize that Gaza is bordered to Egypt, right? And yet they have build a triple wall going 18 meters deep to separate themselves from their Sunni Arab brothers in Gaza. Even under the short rule of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Egyptians kept their bothers with them closed.

Seems to me you’re obsessed, running around like a headless chicken when I point out the hypocrisy of the anti-American Dinh desperately running to Americans for financial help. (Dinh is that you? Come out and play with us!)

But you want an example of his anti-American gibberish, here’s one. He referred to U.S. soldiers this way. “He (Kerry) is extolling our current rabble of mercenaries, desperate fools and psychopaths as this nation’s ‘most exceptional men and women’ who are ‘on the front lines every day defending America.’”

Desperate fools and psychopaths. Rabble. How lovely. Our military may have some bad apples, just as Vietnamese-Americans have had a few (Jiverly Wong, Chai Vang, etc). Broad generalizations are always fun aren’t they?

I’d try to find more, but his website is circa 2006 technology and there’s no proper categorization of posts by subject and date with one click links to each one. Might want to get on that Dinh. Maybe your naive American support base will Paypal you some dough to get a decent site not designed by a fourth grader.

And no, I don’t bother Dinh on his primitive website. He’s set up comments to force people to register with approved vendors. So if I want to comment, I have to give my cell phone # to some company somewhere. Not gonna happen.

I do find it kind of humorous that he recently tweaked the headline of his site, from “The End of America” (with its mental images of a nuclear wasteland) to the much more hopeful “The End of [the] America[n Empire]. I wonder what prompted this drastic rebranding? The brackets do make it laughably clumsy, this we must admit, but I can actually agree with the overall sentiment. Bring the troops home and rebuild this country. And shut those borders.

At the end of July, 1977 I was visiting the town of Onesti, Romania for an athletic competition. Back then, the place was known as Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej — named after Nicolae Ceausescu’s predecessor at the reigns of the country. (Nadia Comaneci, the famous Olympic gymnast of the late 1970s was born there).

Downtown, near the Palace of Culture (“Casa de cultura” in Romanian), there were several apartment buildings, up to ten floors tall — your typical drab, socialist-style, housing for the masses. The communists had been trying to integrate the gypsies, in part by incentivizing them to settle down, sent their kids to school, etc. One such incentive was providing the gypsies with free housing, as witnessed by me in Onesti one evening: through the window of an apartment on the bottom floor I noticed a Gypsy family complete with a tent nailed to the wooden floors, a horse, and a fire burning inside. To paraphrase Hyacinth Bucket (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keeping_Up_Appearances) — the gypsies had brought the outdoors indoors.

As a habitual reader of The Unz Review, however, there is a mild critique I would like to make, which is not meant to obfuscate the brilliance of most of your writing. My critique has to do with some allegations made (by you or by someone you quote) that some specific judgment or action is not about race, but rather about some specific group behavior. I would like to ask you, what is “race” for you? Does it have to do only with the outward appearance of individuals? Are you saying that all behavior is exclusively the product of cultural transmission? In that case, who or what is responsible for the creation of that specific culture in the first place? Look, I am not stating any position here. I just think that asking these questions is a perfect legitimate right one has.

    Hi Bras Cubas,

I will attempt to answer your question. Let’s talk about “ethnic group” or “nation” instead of “race,” though I did use the word race in my article (mainly because I had dragged in the Nazis). Any ethnic group is held together by biology and culture. Now, a modern Greek may have Slavic blood, but because of his identification with the Greek language and culture, he will consider himself fully Greek. A Vietnamese may have Chinese ancestors, but, being immersed in Vietnamese culture, feels anxiety, mistrust if not outright hostility towards China. I’d say that culture, as a collective social construct, is more important than biology in holding a group together. In the end, a cosmopolite is more of a fanciful concept than reality, since each man is anchored in his primary language and culture, though he may know a handful more.

A man can tinker with the culture he’s born into, and I’d say many of us do. As a reformer, he can try to persuade the people of his community to change, or, rejecting his culture, to whatever degree, he can try to become another person. Leaving one culture, he can attempt to join another, and sometimes, he may even do this while not going anywhere. We can’t do anything with our biological heirlooms, but we can certainly mess with our cultural inheritance.

Much of the activities here, at Unz Review, are aimed at modifying the culture, one we’re all invested in. We don’t just converse in English, but talk mostly about American issues, or world issues as they relate to the United States. (Since we’re an empire, this is rather unavoidable, I know.)

Mr. Sz., you’ve stumbled into the significant question, without adequate definitions, and making unsubstantiated assumptions.

First, what is the ‘existence’ of Israel? According to the Zionist entity, it must be majority Jewish, and Jewish-controlled. Therefore by definition, if Palestinians had equal rights and demographically obtained a majority, Israel would cease to exist. No Jews need be expelled, or even leave of their own accord (though many undoubtedly would at the prospect, kind of like “white flight”).

So the “dissolution of Isreal” and “expelling Jews” are two separate questions, but you’ve given no statistic (substantiated or not) for either. Perhaps your “a lot of Palestinians” are of the same order as RTW’s “numerous Israelis”….. bald assertions whose lack of reference avoids scrutiny.

The vast majority of Palestinians are still asking for a two-state solution, however absurd that may be, leaving Israel intact as per 1967 borders. (On the other hand, it is the ultra-orthodox Jews of Neturei Karta who demand “a peaceful dissolution of the state of Israel”.)

To come to your final point, that “Almost 40% (of Palestinians, I presume) think that Isreal will cease to exist within next three decades”, they are not the only ones. But again, nobody is assuming destruction or expulsion, simply the end of a racist Jewish regime, much as the Soviet Union was dissolved. As a Pole, I’m sure you can appreciate that. And that was the crux of the (purposely misquoted and misinterpreted) Iranian remark that just as the Soviet Union had ceased to exist, so would Israel.

The violence, or lack of it, is up to the Israelis. The only reason they don’t straight out massacre the Palestinians is that they don’t want to lose Uncle Sam’s support, but they keep pushing the envelope. How much bad behavior will we tolerate? How long can they perpetuate their mythical narrative, and their false modern myths? (Land without a people… , democracy, etc.)

    1. Israel cannot live without the “European Union”. Israel is very dependent for its imports on the EU. Germany is the main factor preventing the Brussell EU government from screwing Israel.

    2. The EU is also very important to keep Gaza alive and fed. Gaza is far from self sufficient.

Without the EU, Israel would have to feed those 1.8 millions starving humans.

So if you Bobby are European we need you. Otherwise…. think “who needs you?”.

You put your finger on another sore spot with the phrase:

“racist Jews have forced the Palestinians into the world’s largest concentration camp (Gaza) where Jews then murder them like fish in barrel”

Believe me, Israel would be extremely happy if Europe would accept these great-grandchildren of 1947 refugees at the same time with the current Syrian refugees.

Gazan are very religious. They believe in “be fruitful and multiply” and “God will provide”.

“God helps him who helps himself” appears way less important.

By the 1949 armistice, Gaza was part of Egypt. It had some one hundred thousand refugees mainly from Jaffa, and some smaller number of Gaza natives.

Israel is mainly guilty and obligated to these original one hundred thousand refugees, because it prevented their return to their homes and property.

[One feels a much smaller sense of obligations towards the 1.7 millions born since.]

China was able to enforce two children per couple. The Gaza government ( Hamas ) does not.

The agricultural land did not grow. The water aquifer did not grow. Only the population grew.

The barrel is getting more crowded with human beings by the day.

Assume us Jews evaporate, and Gaza stretches all over 1967 Israel, unchecked population growth is still not possible [possible if technology gets the food supply to grow faster].

The Jews as a transcendental mental collectivity are heavy conscience of the europeans and and as always, all heavy conscience is opportunistic. For example, depression is opportunistic, if you do not establish a balance between depression and you, it will send you and probably commit suicide.

If not were the ‘good intentions’ of the Jews, whites, an important part (as are still) would not be doing many legitimately good things (trying to stop the real injustices that were committed in the past) and intelligent (criticizing severely the stupidity of religions). The Jews, on average, because of its advanced mentalist skills, are able to find contradictions between thinking and acting of others, and how they have excellent verbal memory, like me, they can use this to your advantage.

Before Jewish emancipation, the European world was completely lagging behind the great influence of Christianity, contempt and fear to the reason and the constant brutalities that were fundamentally committed against individuals in the name of abstractions (look like leftists today, 😉 ) like ”God”, ”Nation”, ”Blood”, etc

Europeans, as a group, have just shown that they are not able to adapt when their crops are taken from them, they are lost and easily manipulated.

I’m a bit marginal. I was struggling against poverty on the one hand, while on the other hand I rejected the traditional Roma cultural practice of marrying young. They were going to marry me when I was 13, but I wanted to go to school. While I was studying in the tent, they betrothed me in the adjacent tent. They told me to kiss the hand of the girl’s father and say, “Kiss his hand, we asked for the girl’s hand.” Instead, I took his hand and cried, “Do not give your daughter’s hand to me.”

So there’s another factor why they’re generally so messed up. They have arranged marriages at 13 or 14!!!

And here’s a report from Florida:

It is impossible to make enough bad comments about gypsies. Gypsies are a scourge upon Earth. They are a curse upon Mankind.

They have no positive attributes – only negative. In the U.S. they come to Miami, Florida in the winter to escape cold weather.

They seem always to choose the last-name Williams or Mitchell. They cheat and rob and steal. They sign their children into the nearest school only to be eligible for Food Stamps; they then refuse to allow their children to attend school – not even for one day. They are that exclusive of any ‘foreign’ influence upon their children. They send their women into affluent neighborhoods “to go shopping”. That means: to go stealing. The women knock upon a door, feign fatigue or the need for a glass of water; then while the good samaritan homeowner is fetching them a glass of water, they fill their “shopping” bags with whatever is available. Then, after they leave, their male accomplice drives by and they dump their stolen goods into his car and he continues to cruise throughout the neighborhood, waiting for the women to dump another load of stolen goods. If the police are called because of their thievery, they show the policeman that they have nothing in their bags – the homeowner must be mistaken, officer ! Another vicious gypsy trick: the men offer homeowners a small price for “blacktopping” a driveway, and the foolish homeowner agrees to their price – paid in advance; then the gypsies apply onto the driveway some water that has been blackened with driveway tar, and it all washes off after the first rainfall. Gypsies offer nothing but misery to decent people.

The story about nails: I have heard that the thieves on either side of Jesus were gypsies, and that Jesus forgave them for their crimes just before He died. After that, the gypsies have claimed that they are blessed by Jesus and, therefore, are morally entitled to their life of crime – because of the blessing from Jesus.

They seem always to choose the last-name Williams or Mitchell.

Another very popular Gypsy name is ‘Miller’, at least in the midwest, believe it or not.
Gypsies notoriously target elderly people living alone in their homes who have a tendency to be overly trusting and perhaps a bit confused. They pull up in an official looking van, complete with some stick-on, quick change peel-off signs wearing work uniforms. They tell the victims that they’re from the water department and ask to accompany them to their faucets where they’re told to run the water so as to check the pressure. While thus distracted the others slip in and ransack the place for money and jewels. They seem to be pretty good at sniffing out the likely hiding spots of the elderly for their valuables. Lots of seniors don’t quite trust banks so keep it hidden at home. As a result a lot of seniors have had their life savings ripped off by these thieves. They seem to have some scouting network in place where they identify where the vulnerable elderly live. One elderly, but not senile, person I know has been targeted a few times but knew enough to rebuff them. There’s other scams as well, such as Gypsy women scoping out elderly men with Alzheimers in assisted living/nursing homes who don’t get many visitors. They come in and strike up conversations with them and seemingly befriend them, visiting regularly. They find out if the victim has any assets or bank accounts and then gain access to them, cleaning out the victim’s account. There’s lots more of this should anyone want to delve into their practices, such as reading obituaries and burglarizing the homes of the funeral attendees while they’re away, and so on.
Lots of Gypsies have amassed large amounts of money from scams and thievery but they’re good at moving it around and hiding it. They make an outward show of being poor and raggedy to throw off suspicion.

”God don’t give wings to THIS snake”

  122. Dysfunctional people, on average, as happen with gypsies (or better, chimpsies) are disastrous even to do the basic things as produce a self hygienic shared environment.

If they were super smarter AND with this kind of moral innate nature that they have by now, they will destroy the world in few years.

I’m not trying to excuse the stupidities that are commonly committed by human beings of the most contextually advanced races. But this bigger stupidities don’t exonerate the nano-stupidities, a common place in the gypsy favelas.

  123. Macilrae says:

Jim – I’m neither denying that, nor am I personally getting into it. A horrible culture inherent in a minority group can and should be openly deplored; and just possibly even fixed; genetic deficiencies are here to stay and we have to live and work with them.

Our frustration with the PC crowd, that worships and upholds degenerate cultures such as the Gypsy or the ‘African’ ones, pushes us to bring genetics into the picture; which is socially destructive and hurtful to those very individuals in the minorities who are struggling to break loose.

However this is not to say that we should continue to proscribe academic enquiry into genetic apportionment of intelligence between races as we do now – that is all too reminiscent of the middle-ages.

When approached by a Gypsy in Italy, yell “Vai via” repeatedly until he or she leaves you alone. Similarly learn to shout “go away” in the language of whatever other country you might be in.

Oh, yes–ditch the Canon and get an Olympus!

Over the centuries those Roma with traits (such as higher intelligence) which are more suitable for European civilization have probably tended to leave the Roma community and merge into the general European population. The result is that the remaining Roma community has gradually evolved into obligate parasites.

    Seems specially in Romania.

Eastern European Gypsies who move to France, where I live, are often housed in housing projects where the majority of the local population is Arab Muslim (from North Africa). Guess what? The Arabs kick the Gypsies out…

Some Arabs are criminals (and sometimes, “some” means “a lot”), but the Gypsy population is in a class of its own. Theft has deep roots in their culture.

On the other hand, assimilation, when it happens, is complete, because the Gypsies’ culture is not what Europeans or Americans call a “culture”, it’s a lifestyle. Those Gypsies who abandon their culture simply stop being Gypsies. I’ve known several decent people with Gypsy ancestry.

My wife had her purse stolen by Gypsy women, in the Paris region, where we live. A close friend of her had money stolen by Gypsy women right in front of an ATM. A female friend of mine had to fight with two Gypsy women who tried to steal money from her in front of an ATM. Gypsies are well-known as burglars. They make the Arabs look good by comparison.

How many Eastern European Gypsies in France? According to official statistics, 15,000. There are about 400,000 Gypsies with French passports. Even if the stats are underestimated, and the real number of foreign Gypsies is probably closer to 150,000 than to 15,000, it shows how crime-prone the Gypsies of all nationalities are, in a country of 65 million.

They must really be bad if they make the Arabs look good by comparison.

Linh: I’m glad to hear you’re ok.

OT: do you have an update from your publishers? I really want to buy your upcoming book for my father (not internet savvy, hates computers). I wanted to get it for him for Xmas, but got Love Like Hate instead. His birthday is coming up and I’d like to know if it’ll be available. Thanks.

    Hi cskjcsdiuc,

The new book is listed as coming out in November, so hopefully it will really be out then. So busy with other stuff, I haven’t bugged Seven Stories about this, but I’ll get around to it. Many thanks for your interest. I really appreciate it.

My Blood and Soap is a pretty fun read, I think, so won’t make such a bad present should Postcards be delayed again. (With the internet reducing book buying and the horrible economy, all publishers are hurting mightily.)

Gypsies are exotic. With their swirling skirts, black tresses and gold hooped earrings, the flamboyant subjects of songs, poetry and art… .until they rob you.

  138. Gypsies live in a state of quasi- ”feral culture”, a long term ”stable’ dysfuncional bio-cultural cycle or life style.

I’ve never heard anybody come up with a “solution” to the Jewish-Arab conflict in the MIddle East that would be remotely acceptable to both sides. I seriously doubt that any “solution” exists. This is similar to many other group conflicts.

The evolutionary history of Gypsies has resulted in them becoming obligate parasites. All human morality has an ingroup/outgroup orientation but in the case of the Gypsies this ingroup/outgroup orientation is extreme. To the Gypsies the gadjo are just prey.

I know. I just think that the novel concept of ”feral culture” appear reasonable to be used in this extreme cases.

Who knows how did it end with that famous wall in Matiční Street in city of Ústí nad Labem? After activists from all over the world went berserk the wall was torn down in 1999. Local Czechs sold their houses to the city for pittance and left. The place became so devastated that even most of the gypsies left within a decade. It is now abandoned ruin, so deserted that police closed their station there and registers almost no problems in this area. The city would like to tear it down completely but lacks money.

Here is photo gallery of this place from 2014, from a newspaper article:
    http://ustecky.denik.cz/galerie/maticni-je-bez-plotu-15-let.html

Short TV report from 2014 is here (it shows current state of the street):
    http://www.ceskatelevize.cz/ct24/regiony/1007948-15-let-po-rozebrani-plotu-v-maticni-nikdo-z-tehdejsich-obyvatel-neni

One side-effect of this affair was change in laws. After Czech Highest Court (in 2000) invalidated parliament decision to tear down the wall it is now forbidden for parliament to directly interfere with municipal decisions.
