The Unbearable Incoherence of California Dreaming

The schizophrenia in Sacramento is beyond belief. Our state’s radical new mandates are a train wreck of contradictions.

Like toddlers, politicians will demand anything they want, regardless of reality, the laws of economics, or geography. This is the recipe the guys in the high chair want now:

Increased housing density
Increased illegal immigration
Increased costs of doing business
Increased welfare payments

Do these things even go together? The politicians obviously think it will get them elected again.

True, increased density would make room for more illegals. But California lost half a million population in the last couple years. What dictates us to turn our best neighborhoods into refugee camps?

Established citizens, workers and taxpayers, fled the state’s high cost of living twice as fast as illegals moved in. Who will be left to pay the social costs of millions of unskilled newcomers? Can we sustain our quality of living when half the population is on some kind of assistance?

California came endowed with just one main asset: its picture-perfect climate. It lacks mineral resources, aside from farmland. It lacks manufacturing. Its southern half is a drought-thirsty semi-desert. Yet its climate attracted highly qualified people, who built the once sleepy state into a world-class high tech center.

With Lake Mead drying up, the logical policy is to keep population in line with the water supply. To be selective about immigration, welcoming those who can contribute to the state’s strength in technology, who can afford the high cost of scarce real estate.

California’s highest, best use, thanks to its geography, is to be a very wealthy and exclusive place to live. Only about 1% of the world’s land has our ideal climate (the warm summer Mediterranean climate). We need to claim that destiny to make it ours, and not take it for granted.

The weather is the same in San Diego and in Tijuana, but the quality of living is still worlds apart, thanks to human capital. If we don’t work to preserve that special quality, we could lose the California dream that was the Golden State.

Of course, a shortage of politicians with common sense is not unique to California. The Fed kept interest rates at a historical low at the same time Congress was showering us with stimulus checks. Then Washington acts surprised that inflation shot up, and proceeds to kill what’s left of the economy. Can you think of a single American politician who has shown any grasp of macroeconomics? And they are the ones running – and ruining – the economy.

America’s problem is hubris. Our so-called leaders think we can do anything, pay for anything, legislate anything.

That kind of thing has been done for 60 years, giving blacks money at the expense of White people. Do it with your own money if you are so charitable, CaliCooler. It DOES end up being trainloads of money when the loans aren’t paid back, and the houses are trashed.

Presumably such a loan program would be operated through the usual mortgage lenders, requiring a decent credit rating, earnings, and debt to income ratio. It wouldn’t be a blanket program for everyone like this reparations boondoggle, and would cost only a tiny fraction as much, with greater long term benefits.
