That was old-style Lefty Pete Seeger mocking the suburbs back in 1963. The suburbs, according to the songwriter (Malvina Reynolds, another old-style Lefty), were just breeding farms for the bourgeoisie, a wasteland of conformist middle-class values: doctors, lawyers, golfers, and—oh my God!—nuclear families, who drank their martinis dry and sent their kids to summer camp.
Pete’s recording of the song was a big hit. There was a market for mocking the suburbs in the sixties: not just songs, but movies like The Graduate and novels like those of Updike and Cheever. The Boomers were looking for something more exciting, more spiritual, more life-affirming that the routine drudgery of middle-class life.
This being America, there was of course a race element to anti-suburbanism. The people in those little boxes Pete Seeger was sneering at were far too white; everyone understood that.
This was the Civil Rights era, so government action followed. Five years after Seeger’s hit, in 1968, the Lyndon Johnson administration gave us the Fair Housing Act, bringing the power of the feds to bear on race discrimination in those lily-white suburbs. Federal agencies were required, quote: “affirmatively to further” the purposes of the Act, which included diversifying residential neighborhoods.
Fast-forward 47 years. Someone in the Obama administration plucked those words out of the Fair Housing Act and brought forth the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule, ordering the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to withhold federal funds from localities that weren’t sufficiently diverse.
Some shameless cynics like our own Steve Sailer suggested that Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing—which, Steve says, sounds like something Daffy Duck might say—that AFFH was really just a scheme to move poor blacks out of the inner cities. This would open up more prime urban real estate for gentrification, for the benefit of hip young Obama-voting urban types with outlooks formed by TV shows like Friends and Sex in the City; and perhaps, coincidentally of course, perhaps also to the benefit of urban real-estate developers like Obama’s pal Tony Rezko.
The poor blacks being shunted out of the inner cities would have to go somewhere. So where? To the suburbs, of course. Suburbanites might grumble at having inner-city blacks and their problems dumped on them; but hey, suburbanites are mainly racist white people with way too much white privilege, so it serves them right.
Well, July 23rd the Trump administration announced they are dropping the AFFH rule on the grounds that, in the words of HUD Secretary Ben Carson:
Washington has no business dictating what is best to meet your local community’s unique needs.

Under the AFFH rule, said Carson, local jurisdictions were forced to comply with complicated regulations that require hundreds of pages of reporting, to very little practical effect.
That started off what news outlets call a “firestorm” of indignation from Social Justice outfits like The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (which recently libelled VDARE.com to scare our Domain Registrar into dropping us). It sputtered that dropping the AFFH Rule was “a full-frontal assault on the rule of law.”

What do I think about all this?
First off, I was never on board with the anti-suburb sentiment, even in my lefty college days. I’ve always liked the suburbs. I’ve been living in one for nigh-on thirty years, and have no desire to live anywhere else.
One of the first opinion pieces I wrote for an American magazine was in defense of suburbia. That was in reaction to an initiative out of the Clinton administration with the almost comically moon-booted bureaucratic title: Building Livable Communities For The 21st Century. I opened with the ringing declaration that, quote:
I shall give up my lawn mower when they prise it from my cold dead fingers.

That Clinton initiative—the year was 1999—was not in fact explicitly anti-suburb, just a play for more federal control over zoning and transportation. I don’t think it was anti-white, either. The really open, aggressive anti-whiteness we’re all used to now wasn’t much in evidence in the nineties, before the Great Awokening. It took another fifteen years of Leftward drift before Obama came right out into the open with AFFH.
I think Steve’s probably right that there were ulterior motives behind AFFH. It’s hard to watch someone as sanctimonious as Barack Obama without glimpsing the dollar signs flickering on his eyeballs.
Probably there was also racial revenge in play. How dare white Americans monopolize those pleasant leafy suburbs, leaving blacks stuck in smelly, crowded, crime-addled inner cities?
I’m going to give benefit of the doubt, though, and assume that there was some element of genuine altruism in there, too. Let me explain that.
The one great everlasting problem of American society is the problem of poor blacks. There are poor whites, too, of course; but because of race differences in ability and behavior, there are proportionally more, way more, poor blacks.
I raise again my analogy of a man dragging a sack along the road. If the sack is not too big in proportion to the man, it’s a nuisance, but he can keep moving. That’s the situation of whites in relation to their own poor, antisocial element.
If the sack is too big in proportion to the man, however, it’s really hard for him to make any progress. That’s how it is for the so-called Talented Tenth of blacks—and indeed for the rest of us, too—in relation to the black underclass.
But that’s a race realist point of view. If you’re a race denialist, there’s a solution: Magic Dirt!
Just move poor blacks out of the inner citie s where they are concentrated and scatter them out into the suburbs. The magic suburban dirt will cure them of antisocial behaviors and have them crowding into Advanced Placement classes in no time. Problem solved!
I’ve no doubt there are white people who sincerely believe in Magic Dirt Theory. That’s the element of altruism I just mentioned.
However, a great many suburbanites—including Talented Tenth black ones, and probably a lot of white liberals whose enthusiasm for social justice goes no deeper than virtue signaling—a great many of us don’t believe the Magic Dirt Theory and don’t want to live around poor blacks. When we hear the phrase “low-income housing” we think of crime, disorder, welfare mommas, and discipline problems in schools.
Was President Trump’s Wednesday tweet a bare-faced appeal to us—a “dog whistle,” as the media Lefties say?
I bet it was.
But so what? We suburbanites have votes, too.

Just FYI, Seeger had it wrong about those houses in Daly City. They might be boxes, but they were anything but “ticky tacky.” They were framed in old growth redwood.
Makes remodeling tough though. Not easy to saw or drive nails into it and if you want to add structure the old 2 x 4’s were literally 2” x 4” instead of 1 1/2“ x 3 1/2” so it sometimes makes it hard to align new structure.
I always thought the movie ‘Pleasantville’ one of the most overtly evil and self-loathing parodies of the suburbs ever. Released in 1998 a year before your scribbling debut, John. But it had it all: nuclear family bad/fuddy dude, unfaithfulness good/the future; teenage respect for elders bad/robotic, teenage rebellion good/passionate; and of course, monochrome bad/dull, full colour good/vibrant. Evil in technicolour. Oh, and unarguably an accurate forecast of the current abstract graffiti art our society has been daubed into.

Housing in the United States is either a free housing or it isn’t.
You middle class homeowners have a selfish, narrow sighted interest in artificially propping up the value of your homes by restricting the supply of more housing.
Your little plan may work in keeping distance from The Blacks but it also going to make it harder for your biracial children to engage in Affordable Family Formation.
These restriction of affordable and safe housing is why many a white female is childless well into her 30s.
And quite frankly the selfishness of you boomers in going “I got mine” and then lobbying for artificial constraints on housing supply is beyond the pale, and it’s behavior that justifies Government correction because clearly housing is NOT a free market.
I remember having seen this film as an apolitical teenager and already then knowing/feeling it was evil. But it’s not so much an attack on the suburbs as it is an attack on the 1950s and traditional family life.
Whites moved to the suburbs initially because cities became too dangerous or unpleasant. It’s sort of the opposite in Europe (city vs banlieues), although this might be changing now.
I think E. Michael Jones wrote about the purpose behind the destruction of the cities in America.
The problem in America is that you can’t be open about race if you’re white, I mean, Asians can have Chinatown or Koreatown, but you can’t have Europaville. So in the end it becomes about race but by other means (i.e. “affordable housing” means blacks and mexicans, “environmental concerns” means “keep blacks and mexicans and white trash far from my beach mansion in Malibu”.

Some say that the whole idea of suburbia was at least in part a civil defense measure. In the early Cold War era it was believed that spreading the population out over a large area would increase the number of survivors in the event of a Soviet atomic attack. Decentralizing the population would also serve to keep them from banding together to effectively resist their massively enlarged government, as had been in the case in the militant 1930s when millions of American took to the streets in huge protests against Depression conditions. And allowing ownership of a little house on a tiny plot of land would give working people the illusion that they had a vested interest in perpetuating the system that so profited from their exploitation. And best of all, there would now be a big new market for transportation, to the great profit of the oil and automotive industries. These powerful interests were at the same time industriously scrapping public transit systems and transferring freight traffic from railroads to trucks. The latter would operate on the nation’s highways, bought and paid for by the taxpayers, rather than on private railroad rights-of-way, eliminating their high maintenance costs.
That’s the free market fer ya, folks, delivering benefit after benefit to the one percenters while bestowing on the grateful peasants the amazing privilege of living in that happy place trademarked The Free World. And heck, if you can find a way to blame, say, those awful ungrateful darkies for your discontent, then keep on smilin’, because you’ve completed the circle of your oppression yourself.
No one would have left NYC if not for the importation of Southern blacks and the enormous growth in violent crime. I remember as a kid as relatives started moving to the suburbs, my uncles all complaining about the long commute and how much they missed the old neighborhood. But they loved their families and didn’t want them near the crazed violence that kept getting worse in the 70s. Liberal judges, shorter prison sentences and vilification of the police didn’t work out that well back then. And it won’t be different this time, either.

I don’t think that’s right. I’m no expert in these matters, but this is just what I’ve observed from experience:
-Your first statement “Housing in the United States is either a free housing or it isn’t.” is inaccurate. There are a variety of cost sharing, partially-subsidized housing, low-income housing mechanisms. It certainly is not black and white, free or non-free.
-There are many places in the United States where land is less than $1k an acre, and houses in good condition can be bought for cash for between $30k-$70k, and many of these are in majority white communities. These are in rural places where the job market is smaller, but not so vanishingly small that the majority of people are living in poverty.
So if your argument is that middle class whites inflating their property values is what’s causing the problem, the rebuttal is there are also many whites not doing this, or not able to do this, and anyone who wants to is welcome to move to those places.
-Governmental intervention in zoning and housing laws is itself an artificial adjustment to the availability of housing. Your characterization of the revealed preference of the middle class wanting to keep its property values high as artifice is completely backward.
-Real estate asset appreciation is the primary vehicle of growth of the middle class and has been for decades. Real-estate in white majority communities is also a major target of foreign investors who have piles of surplus U.S. dollars. Allowing blacks and hispanics to collapse those property values would drive away foreign investment and destroy the middle class.
-Regarding the point of childless white women, housing is probably a factor, but not as big a factor as contraception, stagnating incomes, and men and women competing for the same job pool, constantly being whittled away by automation.
In short overall there is no artificial restriction of housing, it only appears so to urbanites who are unwilling to move away from the city.The constricted housing supply in those areas is because many people want to live there (for reasons I would characterize as artificial), not because of the local homeowner’s association et al. That mass of people have delusional ideas about what type of employment they are qualified for relative to property values; cryptologists generally wouldn’t consider the housing in Silicon Valley restricted, whereas schoolteachers might.
But given your quip about the inevitability of bi-racial children I’m guessing you’re not arguing in good faith anyway.
For those Whites that think Trump is on their side….consider this.

I lived in Northeast DC for over 20 years, got married and had kids and after a few murders of YTs within a few blocks, fled to the suburbs and have enjoyed it ever since.

Derb, they didn’t even need the AFFH. Ben Carson and Trump only stopped a few FUTURE relocations. But thousands of thugs have already been relocated by the state and federal governments, not to the suburbs, but to other towns outside of big cities. These programs will continue, apart from those of the AFFH.
Over the past 20 years, Chicago public housing projects (big, ugly, smelly, crime-infested, apartment buildings) have been demolished and the criminals and welfare queens living there scattered via government relocation programs to smaller citeies and towns in downstate Illinois, Iowa, and other nearby states. They have been put-up in smaller, newer public housing apartments or given housing vouchers to victimize unsuspecting or greedy landlords. Several years ago the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette had several long articles about this relocation program to downstate Illinois.
There are also a few leftist university towns (e.g. Champaign-Urbana, Illinois) that have housing ordinances that prohibit discrimination on the basis of criminal record (including convictions for violent crimes such as rape, assault, armed robbery etc.) or on the basis of “source of income” (meaning Section 8 vouchers or other government welfare). Chicago has the same ordinance about source of income, which is also wrecking once nice neighborhoods on the Southwest Side. This situation is turning once nice towns into crapholes of shootings, drug dealing, assaults, theft, etc. The “knockout game” is very popular – where the thugs walk up to a middle-aged or elderly white person and puch them as hard as they can. And you also get the pleasure of seeing the goofs walking around with their pants below their butts, hats on sideways, cruising in their ‘hoopties,” yelling their “mudick” babble at any women they pass, and blaring their thumping crap music. Diversity in action.
If you live in any blue state your suburb isn’t safe. Get out. Don’t be a conservative moron with an Antifa thug smashing your head (or your children’s) with a skateboard or bike lock. If you have to take a loss on your house, take it. What is your life and that of your family worth? All you need to do is eliminate the blue states; then look at the shaded (red/blue/purple) Trump-Hillary election map (county by county) to see where conservatives live. Then look at the US county by county maps for “white, non-hispanic” demographics (US Census site and others.) Unfortunately, black and hispanic conservatives are few and far between, so this is the best strategy. Black and hispanic conservatives don’t want to live near thugs either and go to these non-thug counties.
Derb’s “The Talk” for white teenagers is helpful to give to kids, however I think the percentages of black racists is much higher than what he lists. There is no question (except in the mind of Liberals) that the losses of right to restrictive covenants, rental, or sale restrictions started the White exodus from the cities. School desegregation was the final nail in the coffin. Even so, there are some interesting historical footnotes:
The exodus to suburbia began long before the so-called Civil Rights era. In limited forms, it pre-dates the 20th century. But the real boom was after WW II with the first Levittown. Again, it’s worth noting that this first “migration” had nothing to do with forced integration.
It’s also worth remembering that virtually all of that ancient housing, be it a home or apartment building, assuming it dates earlier than the 1940s, was built for and occupied by Whites, or working- or middle-class people at any rate. In some places only abandoned derelicts remain (Detroit youtube videos are an eye-opener) but you can find these in most faded old cities. If any are still maintained and occupied, it is likely they will be rentals with “minorities”. The point I’m trying to make is simple: these modest apartments and homes were good enough for most Americans to live in, three generations ago. A trickle of them left for “the good life” in a bigger home out in the countryside, but the trickle became a flood when the neighborhood’s integrity was irreparably damaged.
It’s hardly an understatement to claim that desegregation ruined much of America, especially its older cities. If you are brave enough, a brief driving tour of your big city will reveal once-livable areas that now are, at best, crumbling reminders of once-upon-a-time functional communities.
There’s a lot of truth in your sarcasm [wry grin]. I’d add, the Interstate Highways were, for a while, actually funded by Defense money, using the same logic (escape from cities if nuclear threat.) Yes, I agree that much of the damage was done by political decisions. Of course, there is always the “who profits?” motive … sure industries or well-connected local interests (builders) influence the process. The “free market” is anything but, but as I age, I have come to appreciate that a certain amount of regulation is very desirable. We can’t keep out people by race, creed, color or national origin (I guess list expands to sexual orientation, non-binary sex, or married a tree…etc…) but thank goodness that zoning is still pretty well universal, despite some attempts to prune it back (“Upzoning” — also a prime suspect area for property developers).
No it was due to the grossly incompetent crew not carrying out the single memory item, for Unscheduled Stab Trim, in the emergency checklist. The crew the day before, flying the same aircraft had the same problem and coped OK(just, they weren’t as good as they should have been). Housing is a very free market. You engage a real estate agent, your agent takes you to see whatever houses they think you might buy so they can get their commission, you make your bid, and if it’s enough for the seller you are the owner.
If you can’t afford the prices, that’s your problem.
Around 1900 the best part of Chicago with the best architecture (of which it was very proud) was the South Side. You can still see much of the architecture today if you drive around.
It’s a good point about who built that. I’m waiting for black people who want better housing to build it for themselves.
I know there are some who do that. Prince Georges County MD was largely built by black people for black people, which is great. But that should be a common approach to concerns about their housing quality, not an exception.
