News-wise, I’d been beginning to get desperate. It’s been coronavirus, coronavirus, coronavirus, for weeks now But this week we got relief, of a sort. We got an Emmett Till.
You know the script. Evil, gap-toothed, leering Badwhites, secure in their white privilege, most likely resident in some state of the old Confederacy, hunt down and murder an innocent young black guy. It’s the core fantasy of Goodwhite Americans, and has to be acted out every so often for their moral satisfaction, like a medieval mumming play: a clear narrative restatement of the eternal conflict between good and evil.
Black Americans can participate in the festivities, too, by burning stores and shooting each other. That’s epiphenomenal, though; nobody cares what blacks do.
We haven’t had a good Emmett Till re-enactment since the Freddie Gray business in Baltimore five years ago, so it’s time. And yes, here it comes. Headlines from the increasingly Woke Drudge Report:
But I’ve lived through so many of these Emmett Till re-enactments now, they’re getting to be as boring as Xi Jinping’s virus.
This particular one concerns a father-and-son team in Brunswick, Georgia. There’d been burglaries in the neighborhood, which is pretty white; at any rate, the local elementary school is 76 percent white. Dad, who is a former police officer, saw a black guy running down the street, who he thought matched a description of the burglar; Father and son, not knowing whether the black guy was armed, grabbed their guns and got in their truck to make a citizens’ arrest—all perfectly legal in Georgia, according to the local authorities who decided not to charge him.

When they caught up with the black guy, they got out to make the arrest, the son holding a shotgun. The black guy tried to wrestle the shotgun from him. Three shots were fired, the son presumably fearing for his life if his opponent got the gun. The black guy died.
All this happened on February 23rd. The District Attorney who investigated the case saw no grounds for an arrest. [PDF]
Last week some cellphone video of the event went public. It was taken by the friend who’d followed father and son. I presume he released it to show they acted within the law—which, the DA had concluded, they did.
All the goodwhites saw on that video, though, was two white guys with guns and a black guy getting shot. Just like Emmett Till!
So now we are getting the full Emmett Till narrative, dressed up with all the usual cant threadbare formulas: “jogging while black,” “modern lynching,” and the rest. There are rallies; there are protests; there are Twitter handles, … you know how it goes.

How’s it all going to play out from here?
Whatever happens at trial in this case, the father and son, the McMichaels, will never again have normal lives. Their home address has already been made public; so even if acquitted, they’d be in danger if they ever went back to live there.
And they will be full-time professional defendants. Even if they’re acquitted in state court, there’ll be appeals and calls for federal Civil Rights and “hate crime” prosecutions.
If a Democrat wins the Presidency in November, those calls will be answered with a vengeance by some anti-white Eric Holder clone at the Justice Department.
So get used to being homeless and unemployable, guys, and to spending all of your free time in lawyers’ offices, and all of your net worth in lawyers’ fees. This is what happens to Americans who bring the wrath of the Goodwhite Establishment down upon themselves as a result of trying to do their citizenly duty. As with the Trayvon Martin case, I’m expecting some degree of Narrative Collapse. The deceased in this case, name of Ahmaud Abery, has so far been presented to us just as a high-school football star. That’s nice; but the guy was 25 years old when he died. What’s he been doing since high school? None of the news reports I’ve seen want to tell me.
Could it be that he was the burglar who’d been plaguing the McMichaels’ neighborhood? I guess it could, but no-one seems interested in finding out.
We have learned that Abery has a rap sheet. He was indicted for bringing an unlicensed handgun (an imported Russian Makarov .380, like the one at left) to a high school basketball game six years ago, and he has a shoplifting conviction. [FastNews, The Brunswick News, February 10, 2015] Not major criminal activity; but Arbery, like Trayvon Martin, seems to have fallen somewhat short of the model-citizen standard. I’m expecting more Narrative Collapse in this area.
George Zimmerman was at least acquitted at state trial. Can McMichael father and son expect the same grace?
I doubt it. That was nearly seven years ago. The political temperature is way higher now than it was back then, and our courts are heavily politicized. Robert Bork wrote about being the only conservative on the faculty of Yale Law School sixty years ago. [Legends in the Law: Robert H. Bork, DC Bar Report, December/January 1998] Does anyone think the law schools have become less Leftist since then?
The Zimmerman verdict was, I think, a fluke. The Establishment will do all they can to prevent that happening again.
For the future of American jurisprudence, compare and contrast the cases of James Fields and Jose Garcia-Zarate.
- James Fields caused the death of Heather Heyer by driving his car into an anarchist mob at Charlottesville, Va. in 2017. His intent is unclear. He was sentenced to life plus 419 years in prison
- Jose Garcia-Zarate, an illegal alien, caused the death of Kate Steinle by shooting her with a handgun in 2015. His intent, like James Fields’, is unclear. He was acquitted of all charges except a picayune federal gun-possession rap, but remains in custody while the authorities ponder, re-ponder, and re-re-ponder his mental state. Intent-wise, I can’t see much difference between those two cases. Outcome-wise, however, Fields got a colossal prison sentence after a year and a half in custody followed by a very brisk trial, while Garcia-Zarate’s state conviction was thrown out on appeal over a technicality, and federal proceedings against him, now five years under way, look like being dragged out to the crack of doom, with a couple of years in the funny farm as the most probable outcome.
That’s our courts: instruments of the Goodwhite CultMarx Establishment. White guy kills white gal, intent unclear: four hundred years in jail. Illegal alien kills white gal, intent unclear: We’re still working on it, don’t rush us, may let a gun-possession charge go forward.
Equal justice under the law? [Laugh.]
As a footnote to all that: I can’t leave the case of the Georgia shooting without registering my anger and disgust at the usual Establishment hypocrisy on display here.

There are no demonstrations on behalf of those named in Paul Kersey’ s or James Fulford’s posts, or Colin Flaherty’s books; no Twitter handles, no indignant denunciations by politicians and TV talking heads … nothing.
If you are murdered by a black or other sacralized minority—an illegal immigrant, say—your death will at most be a few column inches on page fifteen of your local newspaper, if your town still has one.

A couple of points need to be clarified.
1. Georgia does not license or register firearms. Any law concerning the carry of firearms by adults (19 years old is an adult) is unconstitutional. I don’t expect an immigrant who lives in New York to know much about firearms or the rights of Americans. You really should stick to writing about math and yellow fever.
2. The father had a close working relationship with the first DA who no billed this. Due to that relationship, the DA should have been removed from the decision making process. The 2nd DA did this automatically.

The law as quoted here states, “A private person may arrest an offender if the offense is committed in his presence or within his immediate knowledge” (emphasis mine). “He thought the guy matched the description of the burglary suspect” doesn’t seem to meet that standard.
Of course, Derb is quite correct that the balance of outrage is all out of whack.

These black ‘angels’ who are so viciously hunted down by white devils or if killed by their own race never have any relationship with gangs or drugs are an absolute joke. When the black family get the t-shirts printed and haul out the ancient photo’s from high school (which I doubt they ever graduated) – its just another turd polishing exercise.

I don’t think people actually realise what it takes to murder someone in cold blood. It is (or should be) an emotionally gruelling activity that causes long term mental health issues …because human beings feel guilt and empathy, even if they tell themselves different.
Yet, black youths carry out the most heinous crimes -often on people they have grown up with and gone to school with and seem to have no remorse. Their own mothers often assist them by perverting the course of justice, hiding murder weapons etc with no concern for the victim or the family. What more if I was a black teen and had seen generations of my. family go to jail (for alleged non crimes – like murder and armed robbery) I would be doing everything in my power to go a different route. They just repeat the same stupid life choices generation after generation. These idiots get caught for crimes even a moron who watches a few hours of CSI could get away with. It’s like they don’t even try!

Looking closely at the video it is obvious that after swerving to go around the right side of the truck, the jogger takes a hard left and runs across the front of the truck and emerges on the left side of the truck locked in combat with the man bearing the shotgun. Why didn’t he turn right and run away?
The first shot appears to have missed. The second shot caused that characteristic pink mist, the cloud of finely dispersed blood that blows out of the other side of an animal that’s been hit. It’s amazing the jogger was still standing—and fighting spiritedly. So much for the notion that just racking a shotgun will cause a bad guy to quail and piss his pants.
What I can’t figure out was why the jogger attacked an armed man?

Rex Little: I am basically in agreement with you. It’s delightful that someone will point out the outrageous bias in the coverage of crime, and for that I thank Paul Kersey, John Derbyshire, Steve Sailer and so forth. The pictures of the dead man in the NY Times reminded me of saints’ portraits on prayer cards. BUT every individual case has its own facts, and it is extremely risky to pin a general argument on a single case before the facts are elucidated. (Derbyshire is smart enough to know this.) What would I do if two members of another race, both armed, blocked my path while I was jogging (to assume for a moment that that is what the dead man was doing) and said they “just wanted to talk” with me? I don’t know, but I don’t think I’d be crazy if I took it to be a hostile act.
White lives would matter if more white folk bought into the reality that in nature they don’t have privilege. Race is reality … privilege is the concept.
I just remain silent (to avoid condemnation) about the abuses of the minorities and the Jews (Oh, boy…will I ever get banned for mentioning the Jews, another wholly protected class in the U.S.).
But I’m prepared for the first, seriously prepared, and I don’t in any way associate with or patronize the latter. Both should be held in suspicion and contempt and whites and Christians should follow my example.

The story of Emmett Till is paraded around as an example of “racism” and “discrimination” in “Jim Crow” America.
The TRUE story begs to be told as Emmett Till did not “merely whistle” at a white woman, but fondled and manhandled a married white woman at the behest of his friends. Emmett Till used to brag about “getting it on” with white women. This might not have had much of an effect in Chicago (where he came from), but in the deep South, his actions had profound implications both for him and the community he was living in.
Of course, it was wrong to kill him, BUT Till contributed to his own demise by refusing to apologize for his misbehavior.
A 14-year-old is mature enough to know that going around grabbing and fondling women is wrong and socially unacceptable.
It might interest some to know that Emmett Till’s father was executed by the U S military for multiple rapes.

Black lives will matter more when black folks buy into the reality that they aren’t owed privileges. They need to work just like whites, stop being violent, and maintain intact families. They also need to stop being enstupidated, lazy, blame-mongering, and rude-lewd-crude. Privileges are earned.

Anyway, to answer the question, some options:
1. He didn’t think the white guy would do anything other than stammer once confronted so he expected to pummel the White guy. Given recent performance of Whites, that’s a reasonable bet.
2. He was angry. Black anger + poor impulse control = charge the guy holding a shotgun.
3. He very much didn’t want to get arrested and was trying to find a way out of it. Evaluating consequences of one’s behavior is not a proven strength for most young Black men.
4. He was intoxicated.
Early on, when this incident first gained national prominence, I read on a reliable internet source that Mr. Avery was “jogging” in a neighborhood over ten miles from where he lived. I’ve forgotten that source and since then this information seems to have been scrubbed or buried very deeply. I could find only one un-sourced reference on Reddit.
This seems to me an important detail akin to Trayvon Martin’s 45′ amble in the rain back to his home, a trip that should have taken 15′ and is at least suggestive of an amateur burglar scoping out new territory.
I’m hoping someone here can provide a reliable link to a solid source on how far from his home, Mr. Avery actually was when he was killed.
This was my take as well. For obvious reasons the threshold to make a citizen’s arrest should be pretty high; “he looked suspicious” or “he looked like a guy who committed a crime here a month ago” don’t meet that standard imo. The guy probably was a burglar but the father/son team didn’t see him trespassing or otherwise actively committing a crime (from what I can tell), so they were probably right but for the wrong reasons. Unfortunately that’s not enough. If they actually saw the guy (or their friend saw the guy) trespassing on that under-construction house then my opinion would change.
My sense is the father, like a lot of ex-cops, hasn’t shed the cop mentality; he thought he still had that discretion and power. But that’s not the case.

These citizen-arrest-type-muh-guns-toy-cops are a menace to everybody. It’s laughable when you assert that the victim resembled a burglary suspect. 25% of black men walking around will resemble a suspect to some degree. These toy cops hunted a man down, when he refused to submit to their dictates they initiated a violent confrontation that led to his death. 25 to life.

I’ll go with #1 and #3, especially #1. Black men have apparently bought into the myth, propagated and perpetuated by the Jewish entertainment industry, that white men are afraid of them and won’t defend themselves. (While this is true of Jewish men, it is not of Euros. Another case of projection, with deadly results)
Further, they are so self centered and vain that they believe that they are natural leaders, that whites should be subservient. This is reinforced by what they see on TV in foot and basketball. Course they don’t watch the hammer throw, shot putt, strongest man competitions etc. so their misconceptions go uncorrected—until something like this happens. This is misconception correcting of the most unignorable kind.

Notify the police if you see someone matching the description of a suspect. Even if you are 99% sure, just call 911, tell the officer on the phone where they are at, what they are wearing, and in what direction they are going. Cops in cars speaking via radio, including K9 officers and their dogs, have training and the law on their side to legally detain and question a suspect. Its a shame that the McMichaels’ chose to play this old West style, when a phone call gets it all resolved with no bloodshed. Two probably decent guys are now going to jail and a young fella is dead. A phone call is much better.
Btw…..if the young guy Ahmed-whateverhisnameis pawned some of the stolen construction equipment, the serial numbers to the saws and drills have to be recorded by the pawnshop. If you list yours as missing, and have written down the serial numbers or have shoeboxed the old reciepts with the serial numbers, Ahmed gets busted. He has to show his ID to pawn them. Another tip: dont leave tools at the worksite. Lock em’ up in the truck, even if you are just going to lunch.
Black felons will readily attack cops, swinging with both fists. As I said above they should NOT have confronted him.
A firearm isn’t a magic wand which will cause someone to automatically meekly obey, And a long gun isn’t as good to hold on someone as a handgun.

They assumed he would not assault someone pointing a shotgun at him. They thought it safe to assume he would tractable rather than provoked and enraged by threat of immediate lethal force. Cops know better. That is why they carry tasers.

Big mistake to include the attempted murder of Trisha Meili, who was too good looking to be a random victim. Much more likely–as Reyes confession says–that she was spotted in a crowded area, stalked and taken unawares when she reached the isolated are of the park where the drag marks across the ground indicated a single assailant.
Till, BTW, was guilty as hell of the sexual assault of Mrs. Bryant. A few years back, there was a BS campaign about how a professor named Timothy Tyson got her to confess Till didn’t do anything to her.

Sure did. A man is out jogging in the afternoon. Two armed men in a pickup truck, pursue and accost him. Armed, they call out to him and demand that he submit to their interrogation. One of the armed man, wielding a shotgun, leaves the pickup truck, points the shotgun at him. At this point the man resists armed assault and is killed/murdered by one of his assailants.
The best that these toy-cop sh**heads should hope for is 25-life.
Having a gun ups the stakes, whether you’re a mugger or a law-abiding citizen. A rational unarmed person will comply with your demands. But if you’ve got someone who’s stupid or crazy enough to take you on with his bare hands, you’ve no option but to shoot, even if it’s someone you could beat hands down in unarmed combat. You need to stop him from taking your gun. And there’s a whole list of BLM martyrs to show that blacks don’t act rationally when confronted with superior force. This is a fact that people like the McMichaels need to contemplate. They would have been better advised to ring 911 while keeping track of Arbery’s location till the police arrived.

Thus, their effort was unified in a ‘joint venture’.

Mr. Been, I stopped visiting the Drudge Report almost 2 years back. It seemed to go downhill somewhere around that long ago.
Did the father work in the DA’s office? If he did not, there was no working relationship, close or otherwise. He was just a cop doing his job. Thats what cops do… report cases to for criminal prosecution. Probably very well if he saw the DA often.
The over-arching lesson of these incidents is we can’t live together. Both black and white should see that. Waiting another millennia for a “cure” to racism (however you define it) is a non-starter.
A rational unarmed person will comply with your demands
Because a man points a gun at one, one must comply with the assailants demands? I think that the onus should be on the assailant to prove that he knew with certainty that his armed assault of the man was necessary to save or protect a life. You assume he’s out jogging, that they demand that he submit to their interrogation, that the man with the shotgun pointed it at him. Then you willfully misrepresent who pulls the trigger.
There’s no reason to believe that the men didn’t just order him to stand while they waited for the police to come. There’s no evidence that a gun was pointed at him. To the contrary, when the two men emerge from in front of the truck, they are struggling and the shotgun is pointed towards the ground. And why do you say that “one of his assailants” killed him when it was clearly the man whom he attacked and with whom he was engaged in a life or death struggle?
Which is less likely? That a black man is innocent or that he is a jogger?

The moment the jogger swerved left and ran across in front of the truck, he committed himself to a fight to the finish. This is given credence by the fact that the video shows the shotgun aimed downwards when they emerge into view. Evidently, either the gun bearer did not have the gun aimed directly at the jogger or he did so but had no intention of pulling the trigger. Either way, this gave the jogger time to get within the wielder’s personal space and engage him.
This is the crux of the matter. In an impartial court of law, the jogger will lose because he was the assailant and because the visual evidence indicates that the gun bearer was not wielding his gun with an eye towards actually shooting the jogger.

Even not that long ago, the athletic ‘heroes’ of Europe were white. Even when they lost to black athletes in the global competition, they were accepted as national champions. And people used to have the same kind of mentality about sports. Even if your national athletes lost to athletes of another nation, they were the national champions and representatives. Even if the British soccer team didn’t win the World Cup, the British welcomed them as the home team and honored them. The Brits might admire and respect the winners of the World Cup, but they still had an understanding of us and them.
But once UK allowed mass immigration, things began to change, esp with blacks, the only race that can handily beat the whites in sports. Even a handful of blacks meant that blacks could beat up whites. And as they were counted as ‘British’, the black man became the new idol, hero, or champion of Britishness(or Frenchness or Canadianness or Dutchness). You can’t prove intent, it’s an internal state of mind. So unless the shooter says, “Yes, I pursued him with the intent of gunning him down in broad daylight in cold blood”, the prosecutor is up against a stone wall on that score.
If you look at the video closely, you will see the jogger approach on the left hand side of the road. When he spots the man in front of him standing on the left side of the truck, he swerves to the right to go around the truck on the right hand side. At the soonest possible moment, when he reaches the right front corner of the truck, he cuts left and heads straight towards the man holding the gun. They meet and fight.
So, not only did the jogger make no effort to avoid the fight, it’s obvious that he instigated it.
Again, pause the video when he reaches the right front bumper. He literally lifts his inside (left) leg and cuts to the left like a halfback. He had already made up his mind to fight the gun bearer, made it up when he chose to go around the right hand side of the truck, i.e. long before actual contact was made.
In light of the above irrefutable evidence it is obvious that in a fair court of law, it would be impossible to convict these men of premeditated murder.

Disclosed here is the true account of the slaying in Mississippi of a Negro youth named Emmett Till.
Last September in Sumner, Miss., a petit jury found the youth’s admitted abductors not guilty of murder. In November, in Greenwood, a grand jury declined to indict them for kidnapping.
Of the murder trial, the Memphis Commercial Appeal said: “Evidence necessary for convicting on a murder charge was lacking.” But with truth absent, hypocrisy and myth have flourished. Now, hypocrisy can be exposed; myth dispelled. Here are the facts.
Carolyn Holloway Bryant is 21, five feet tall, weighs 103 pounds. An Irish girl, with black hair and black eyes, she is a small farmer’s daughter who, at 17, quit high school at Indianola, Miss., to marry a soldier, Roy Bryant, then 20, now 24. The couple have two boys, three and two; and they operate a store at a dusty crossroads called Money: post office, filling station and three stores clustered around a school and a gin, and set in the vast, lonely cotton patch that is the Mississippi Delta.
Carolyn and Roy Bryant are poor: no car, no TV. They live in the back of the store which Roy’s brothers helped set up when he got out of the 82nd Airborne in 1953. They sell “snuff-and-fatback” to Negro field hands on credit: and they earn little because, for one reason, the government has been giving the Negroes food they formerly bought.
Carolyn and Roy Bryant’s social life is visits to their families, to the Baptist church, and, whenever they can borrow a car, to a drive-in, with the kids sleeping in the back seat. They call Shane the best picture they ever saw.
For extra money, Carolyn tends store when Roy works outside — like truck driving for a brother. And he has many brothers. His mother had two husbands, 11 children. The first five — all boys — were “Milam children”; the next six — three boys, three girls — were “Bryant children.”
This is a lusty and devoted clan. They work, fight, vote and play as a family. The “half” in their fraternity is forgotten. For years, they have operated a chain of cottonfield stores, as well as trucks and mechanical cotton pickers. On Wednesday evening, August 24, 1955, Roy was in Texas, on a brother’s truck. He had carted shrimp from New Orleans to San Antonio, proceeded to Brownsville. Carolyn was alone in the store. But back in the living quarters was her sister-in-law Juanita Milam, 27, with her two small sons and Carolyn’s two. The store was kept open till 9 on week nights, 11 on Saturday.
When her husband was away, Carolyn Bryant never slept in the store, never stayed there alone after dark. Moreover, in the Delta, no white woman ever travels country roads after dark unattended by a man.
This meant that during Roy’s absences — particularly since he had no car — there was family inconvenience. Each afternoon, a sister-in-law arrived to stay with Carolyn until closing time. Then, the two women, with their children, waited for a brother-in-law to convoy them to his home. Next morning, the sister-in-law drove Carolyn back.
Juanita Milam had driven from her home in Glendora. She had parked in front of the store to the left; and under the front seat of this car was Roy Bryant’s pistol, a .38 Colt automatic. Carolyn knew it was there. After 9, Juanita’s husband, J. W. Milam, would arrive in his pickup to shepherd them to his home for the night.
About 7:30 pm, eight young Negroes — seven boys and a girl — in a ’46 Ford had stopped outside. They included sons, grandsons and a nephew of Moses (Preacher) Wright, 64, a ‘cropper. They were between 13 and 19 years old. Four were natives of the Delta and others, including the nephew, Emmett (Bobo) Till, were visiting from the Chicago area.
Bobo Till was 14 years old: born on July 25, 1941. He was stocky, muscular, weighing about 160, five feet four or five. Preacher later testified: “He looked like a man.”
Bobo’s party joined a dozen other young Negroes, including two other girls, in front of the store. Bryant had built checkerboards there. Some were playing checkers, others were wrestling and “kiddin’ about girls.”
Bobo bragged about his white girl. He showed the boys a picture of a white girl in his wallet; and to their jeers of disbelief, he boasted of success with her.
“You talkin’ mighty big, Bo,” one youth said. “There’s a pretty little white woman in the store. Since you know how to handle white girls, let’s see you go in and get a date with her?”
“You ain’t chicken, are yuh, Bo?” another youth taunted him.
Bobo had to fire or fall back. He entered the store, alone, stopped at the candy case. Carolyn was behind the counter; Bobo in front. He asked for two cents’ worth of bubble gum. She handed it to him. He squeezed her hand and said: “How about a date, baby?”
She jerked away and started for Juanita Milam. At the break between counters, Bobo jumped in front of her, perhaps caught her at the waist, and said: “You needn’t be afraid o’ me, Baby. I been with white girls before.”
At this point, a cousin ran in, grabbed Bobo and began pulling him out of the store. Carolyn now ran, not for Juanita, but out the front, and got the pistol from the Milam car.
Outside, with Bobo being ushered off by his cousins, and with Carolyn getting the gun, Bobo executed the “wolf whistle” which gave the case its name:
THE WOLF-WHISTLE MURDER: A NEGRO “CHILD” OR “BOY” WHISTLED AT HER AND THEY KILLED HIM.
That was the sum of the facts on which most newspaper readers based an opinion.
The Negroes drove away; and Carolyn, shaken, told Juanita. The two women determined to keep the incident from their “Men-folks.” They didn’t tell J. W. Milam when he came to escort them home.
By Thursday afternoon, Carolyn Bryant could see the story was getting around. She spent Thursday night at the Milams, where at 4 a.m. (Friday) Roy got back from Texas. Since he had slept little for five nights, he went to bed at the Milams’ while Carolyn returned to the store.
During Friday afternoon, Roy reached the store, and shortly thereafter a Negro told him what “the talk” was, and told him that the “Chicago boy” was “visitin’ Preacher.” Carolyn then told Roy what had happened.
Once Roy Bryant knew, in his environment, in the opinion of most white people around him, for him to have done nothing would have marked him for a coward and a fool.
On Friday night, he couldn’t do anything. He and Carolyn were alone, and he had no car. Saturday was collection day, their busy day in the store. About 10:30 Saturday night, J. W. Milam drove by. Roy took him aside.
“I want you to come over early in the morning,” he said. “I need a little transportation.”
J.W. protested: “Sunday’s the only morning I can sleep. Can’t we make it around noon?”
Roy then told him.
“I’ll be there,” he said. “Early.”
J. W. drove to another brother’s store at Minter City, where he was working. He closed that store about 12:30 a.m., drove home to Glendora. Juanita was away, visiting her folks at Greenville. J. W. had been thinking. He decided not to go to bed. He pumped the pickup — a half-ton ’55 Chevrolet — full of gas and headed for Money.
J. W. “Big Milam” is 36: six feet two, 235 pounds; an extrovert. Short boots accentuate his height; khaki trousers; red sports shirt; sun helmet. Dark-visaged; his lower lip curls when he chuckles; and though bald, his remaining hair is jet-black.
He is slavery’s plantation overseer. Today, he rents Negro-driven mechanical cotton pickers to plantation owners. Those who know him say that he can handle Negroes better than anybody in the country.
Big Milam soldiered in the Patton manner. With a ninth-grade education, he was commissioned in battle by the 75th Division. He was an expert platoon leader, expert street fighter, expert in night patrol, expert with the “grease gun,” with every device for close range killing. A German bullet tore clear through his chest; his body bears “multiple shrapnel wounds.” Of his medals, he cherishes one: combat infantryman’s badge.
Big Milam, like many soldiers, brought home his favorite gun: the .45 Colt automatic pistol.
“Best weapon the Army’s got,” he says. “Either for shootin’ or sluggin’.”
Two hours after Big Milam got the word — the instant minute he could close the store — he was looking for the Chicago Negro.
Big Milam reached Money a few minutes shy of 2 a.m., Sunday, August 28. The Bryants were asleep; the store was dark but for the all-night light. He rapped at the back door, and when Roy came, he said: “Let’s go. Let’s make that trip now.”
Roy dressed, brought a gun: this one was a .45 Colt. Both men were and remained — cold sober. Big Milam had drunk a beer at Minter City around 9; Roy had had nothing.
There was no moon as they drove to Preacher’s house: 2.8 miles east of Money.
Preacher’s house stands 50 feet right of the gravel road, with cedar and persimmon trees in the yard. Big Milam drove the pickup in under the trees. He was bareheaded, carrying a five-cell flashlight in his left hand, the .45 in the right.
Roy Bryant pounded on the door.
Preacher: “Who’s that?”
Bryant: “Mr. Bryant from Money, Preacher.”
Preacher: “All right, sir. Just a minute.”
Preacher came out of the screened-in porch.
Bryant: “Preacher, you got a boy from Chicago here?”
Preacher: “Yessir.”
Bryant: “I want to talk to him.”
Preacher: “Yessir. I’ll get him.”
Preacher led them to a back bedroom where four youths were sleeping in two beds. In one was Bobo Till and Simeon Wright, Preacher’s youngest son. Bryant had told Preacher to turn on the lights; Preacher had said they were out of order. So only the flashlight was used.
The visit was not a complete surprise. Preacher testified that he had heard of the “trouble,” that he “sho’ had” talked to his nephew about it. Bobo himself had been afraid; he had wanted to go home the day after the incident. The Negro girl in the party urged that he leave. “They’ll kill him,” she had warned. But Preacher’s wife, Elizabeth Wright, had decided that the danger was being magnified; she had urged Bobo to “finish yo’ visit.”
“I thought they might say something to him, but I didn’t think they’d kill a boy,” Preacher said.
Big Milam shined the light in Bobo’s face, said: “You the nigger who did the talking?”
“Yeah,” Bobo replied.
Milam: “Don’t say, ‘Yeah’ to me: I’ll blow your head off. Get your clothes on.”
Bobo had been sleeping in his shorts. He pulled on a shirt and trousers, then reached for his socks.
“Just the shoes,” Milam hurried him.
“I don’t wear shoes without socks,” Bobo said: and he kept the gun-bearers waiting while he put on his socks, then a pair of canvas shoes with thick crepe soles.
Preacher and his wife tried two arguments in the boy’s behalf.
“He ain’t got good sense,” Preacher begged. “He didn’t know what he was doing. Don’t take him.”
“I’ll pay you gentlemen for the damages,” Elizabeth Wright said.
“You niggers go back to sleep,” Milam replied.
They marched him into the yard, told him to get in the back of the pickup and lie down. He obeyed. They drove toward Money.
Elizabeth Wright rushed to the home of a white neighbor, who got up, looked around, but decided he could do nothing. Then, she and Preacher drove to the home of her brother, Crosby Smith, at Sumner; and Crosby Smith, on Sunday morning, went to the sheriff’s office at Greenwood.
The other young Negroes stayed at Preacher’s house until daylight, when Wheeler Parker telephoned his mother in Chicago, who in turn notified Bobo’s mother, Mamie Bradley, 33, 6427 S. St. Lawrence.
Had there been any doubt as to the identity of the “Chicago boy who done the talking,” Milam and Bryant would have stopped at the store for Carolyn to identify him. But there had been no denial. So they didn’t stop at the store. At Money, they crossed the Tallahatchie River and drove west.
Their intention was to “just whip him… and scare some sense into him.” And for this chore, Big Milam knew “the scariest place in the Delta.” He had come upon it last year hunting wild geese. Over close to Rosedale, the Big River bends around under a bluff. “Brother, she’s a 100-foot sheer drop, and she’s a 100 feet deep after you hit.”
Big Milam’s idea was to stand him up there on that bluff, “whip” him with the .45, and then shine the light on down there toward that water and make him think you’re gonna knock him in.
“Brother, if that won’t scare the Chicago ——-, hell won’t.”
Searching for this bluff, they drove close to 75 miles. Through Shellmound, Schlater, Doddsville, Ruleville, Cleveland to the intersection south of Rosedale. There they turned south on Mississippi No. 1, toward the entrance to Beulah Lake. They tried several dirt and gravel roads, drove along the levee. Finally, they gave up: in the darkness, Big Milam couldn’t find his bluff.
They drove back to Milam’s house at Glendora, and by now it was 5 a.m.. They had been driving nearly three hours, with Milam and Bryant in the cab and Bobo lying in the back.
At some point when the truck slowed down, why hadn’t Bobo jumped and run? He wasn’t tied; nobody was holding him. A partial answer is that those Chevrolet pickups have a wraparound rear window the size of a windshield. Bryant could watch him. But the real answer is the remarkable part of the story.
Bobo wasn’t afraid of them! He was tough as they were. He didn’t think they had the guts to kill him.
Milam: “We were never able to scare him. They had just filled him so full of that poison that he was hopeless.”
Back of Milam’s home is a tool house, with two rooms each about 12 feet square. They took him in there and began “whipping” him, first Milam then Bryant smashing him across the head with those .45’s. Pistol-whipping: a court-martial offense in the Army… but MP’s have been known to do it…. And Milam got information out of German prisoners this way.
But under these blows Bobo never hollered — and he kept making the perfect speeches to insure martyrdom.
Bobo: “You bastards, I’m not afraid of you. I’m as good as you are. I’ve ‘had’ white women. My grandmother was a white woman.”
Milam: “Well, what else could we do? He was hopeless. I’m no bully; I never hurt a nigger in my life. I like niggers — in their place — I know how to work ’em. But I just decided it was time a few people got put on notice. As long as I live and can do anything about it, niggers are gonna stay in their place. Niggers ain’t gonna vote where I live. If they did, they’d control the government. They ain’t gonna go to school with my kids. And when a nigger gets close to mentioning sex with a white woman, he’s tired o’ livin’. I’m likely to kill him. Me and my folks fought for this country, and we got some rights. I stood there in that shed and listened to that nigger throw that poison at me, and I just made up my mind. ‘Chicago boy,’ I said, ‘I’m tired of ’em sending your kind down here to stir up trouble. Goddam you, I’m going to make an example of you — just so everybody can know how me and my folks stand.’”
So Big Milam decided to act. He needed a weight. He tried to think of where he could get an anvil. Then he remembered a gin which had installed new equipment. He had seen two men lifting a discarded fan, a metal fan three feet high and circular, used in ginning cotton.
Bobo wasn’t bleeding much. Pistol-whipping bruises more than it cuts. They ordered him back in the truck and headed west again. They passed through Doddsville, went into the Progressive Ginning Company. This gin is 3.4 miles east of Boyle: Boyle is two miles south of Cleveland. The road to this gin turns left off U.S. 61, after you cross the bayou bridge south of Boyle.
Milam: “When we got to that gin, it was daylight, and I was worried for the first time. Somebody might see us and accuse us of stealing the fan.”
Bryant and Big Milam stood aside while Bobo loaded the fan. Weight: 74 pounds. The youth still thought they were bluffing.
They drove back to Glendora, then north toward Swan Lake and crossed the “new bridge” over the Tallahatchie. At the east end of this bridge, they turned right, along a dirt road which parallels the river. After about two miles, they crossed the property of L.W. Boyce, passing near his house.
About 1.5 miles southeast of the Boyce home is a lonely spot where Big Milam has hunted squirrels. The river bank is steep. The truck stopped 30 yards from the water.
Big Milam ordered Bobo to pick up the fan.
He staggered under its weight… carried it to the river bank. They stood silently… just hating one another.
Milam: “Take off your clothes.”
Slowly, Bobo pulled off his shoes, his socks. He stood up, unbuttoned his shirt, dropped his pants, his shorts.
He stood there naked.
It was Sunday morning, a little before 7.
Milam: “You still as good as I am?”
Bobo: “Yeah.”
Milam: “You still ‘had’ white women?”
Bobo: “Yeah.”
That big .45 jumped in Big Milam’s hand. The youth turned to catch that big, expanding bullet at his right ear. He dropped.
They barb-wired the gin fan to his neck, rolled him into 20 feet of water.
For three hours that morning, there was a fire in Big Milam’s back yard: Bobo’s crepe soled shoes were hard to burn.
Seventy-two hours later — eight miles downstream — boys were fishing. They saw feet sticking out of the water. Bobo.
The majority — by no means all, but the majority — of the white people in Mississippi 1) either approve Big Milam’s action or else 2) they don’t disapprove enough to risk giving their “enemies” the satisfaction of a conviction.
Apparently the author: William Bradford Huie, isn’t aware Mrs. Bryant recanted her “story”.
She recanted her story under duress or because of guilt for Till’s death, nothing more. That is on of the oldest psychological tricks in the book…

We couldn’t resist or run. We were at a garden party. About 12 people, including women, with more on the way. They took a hostage well away from us and didn’t release them till they were leaving. Resistance would have meant a bloodbath.
Best to speed them on their way, a clean break with enough booty to think they scored. They don’t want resistance or static. They look at themselves as businessmen. Encourage them to take the money and run.

The police say he was wearing Nike sneakers when he was killed. They appear to be high top sneakers, probably basketball shoes. The high top feature of these shoes has led people to mistake them for boots, I think. They’re a strange choice for someone who is supposedly an avid jogger. I would imagine you’d be much more likely to develop shin splints or other ailments wearing these compared to traditional running shoes.

The 25 yr old wasn’t a kid. He was a burglar with a record, who was working the neighborhood which has now been revealed by security footage. The neighborhood had every right to stop him, and the McMichael’s had a gun stolen recently. They had a reason to expect Arbery was armed, and also that Arbery would have the typical attitude of entitlement and victimhood that would lead him to respond to any request by a white person with violence.

While it is true he they cut him off, he ran up to the truck instead of getting off the road. They would not have dared shoot him in the back, and going through backyards and over fences in a foot chase he would have surely have got away. I am afraid he chose to get close, then went at and physically tackled an obviously armed man. Maybe he would have done that with cops, maybe not.
Till looked like a man rather than the boy he was. Till’s cousins and his friends who were with him gave an interview many years ago, and in it they said Till went in the store on a dare to show what he could do with Mrs Bryant–who they had been having a locker room type conversation about– to back up his boasts about getting white girls. Then a black came out and said ‘you’ve got a crazy cousin’, and Till rejoined the group outside, then an old black man advised them to instantly leave. What is not in dispute is that Mrs Bryant came out her store and went to her car to get a gun after Till exited . 1) Aubrey lived nine miles from this middle class, mostly white neighborhood. What evidence is there that he was “Jogging”? None. He certainly was NOT wearing jogging clothes. But then Mr. Brown -of Ferguson fame – was just “out for a stroll”, and Mr. Trayvon was out for some “tea and skittles” in the rain.
2) Aubrey didn’t get “gunned down” or “Lynched”. He ran around the OTHER SIDE of the truck and tried to grab an old man’s shotgun. And when the old man refused to let go, Aubrey starting punching the old guy in the head. Eventually, during the struggle, Aubrey was shot.
Moral of Story: when you’re stopped by 3 men with guns in broad daylight, even when “jogging”, talk to them. Or run away. Don’t try to grab the gun of ONE of them.

Questions (from a runner): if he’d been jogging long distance, his clothes should have been drenched in sweat – were they?
