As for drug traffickers, they are business people that gov’t frown on. This leads to the violence. Just like alcohol purveyors, if left alone, they supply a product to a willing customer base. If gov’t would just stop their insane war on drugs, the violence should dissipate as was shown when prohibition was discarded and your local pharmacy could once again dispense cocaine, heroin, laudanum, morphine, etc as was done over a century ago. The theater being discussed in El Salvadore will show a temporary improvement as the gov’t slowly gets a bigger piece of the various criminal enterprises. As a consequence many tens of thousands of them fled to the US – many settling in Los Angeles. It was THERE they experienced gang culture and formed their own. Doctors have reported huge increases of emergency room intakes suffering from marijuana overdose since legalization. The people whose schizophrenia manifests were using. predisposition is the theory, but a wide ranging study out of the UK showed about 20% of users showed symptoms of serious psychological problems after using. It’s not a “medicine”. It’s a drug you use to get high. I’m not saying cannabis smoke is healthy for the lungs, I’m saying millions of people use cannabis for both recreational and medicinal purposes and that these people should not be harmed by Armed “government” Workers for their decision.

While I usually don’t go to work stoned and I don’t recommend working with machinery or equipment when high, there are certain chores where being stoned provides a great advantage. I’ll name three… Cleaning the house, waxing the car and mowing the lawn. Being stoned makes these chores much more pleasurable which enables me to do a better, more thorough job. I’m sure there are plenty of other examples.

Looks like most people do not need to be stoned to be easily controlled. Most people just follow orders. (The last three years are instructive. Do you really think all the pro-lockdown fanatics and no-jab no-job advocates were high on cannabis? When Noam Chomsky said that anti-vaxxers should be segregated from the rest of society was it because he was smoking weed?) Excepting the Canadian Truckers, when is the last time that protesting had any effect on policy? The gang culture is not Salvadoran. It’s Usamerican. Young salvadorans lernt it in the USA. They brought it with them when they were deported back to El Salvador during Obamas’ presidency.

The president of El Salvador is not liked by the Biden administration. There are well based rumors that the United States government wants to destabilize El Salvador using these gangs, just as they did in Afghanistan using the Taliban, al-Qaeda in Syria, or the neo-Nazis in the Ukraine. That is why the Salvadoran president is so radical with them.

If the USA government succeeds, there will be another huge wave of refugees and illegal immigrants, as it happened with afghans, Syrians, Venezuelans and Ukrainians. But of course, it will not be your fault. It never is. You are always innocent victims.

Having been a street cop for many years, it’s my opinion that marijuana is indeed a “gateway drug” that leads to harder drugs. Maybe not for everyone, but for a good many it sets them on a path to ‘bigger and better’ things. For that matter, alcohol often has the same effect in terms of experimentation. A young person who starts to drink regularly, especially if consuming hard liquor, is usually more open to trying marijuana or at least they may not be so opposed to experimenting with it if it makes them feel good.

I’ve seen people at their best and at their worst. I cannot think of one occasion or one person where regular marijuana usage made them better and more productive in life. In almost every case I’m aware of, they eventually became addicted to it and were later honest enough to admit that while it felt good at the time, it really stunted them in various ways. Getting high has a way of deceiving us and getting us to rationalize things we wouldn’t begin to say had we been sober in the first place.

I understand perfectly. My wife has arthritis in her hands. I got her some pot to create a tincture via alcohol so she could rub the solution on her hands. Pot grows like the weed it is all over the island. I have never used pot in any fashion. The one time, 50 years ago, a friend convinced me to take a hit on a hash (pot derivative) pipe was enough for me to never again go anywhere near that shit. I have suggested to one of my relatives to smoke some pot to relieve anxiety and mellow out a bit since the pharma drugs are causing too many unwanted effects.

My position is that what people do to themselves is no one else’s business. If their actions cause identifiable harm to another, then THAT needs to be addressed. At a minimum — from what I’ve seen — we should think about making it difficult for adolescents to get high all the time. For a remarkably large percentage, it doesn’t seem to work out very well.

Never smoked pot myself, but growing up I knew a lot of pot-heads, and nearly all of them were idiots. But then again I knew a lot of stupid people growing up, so it was a chicken-and-egg thing: did pot make them stupid, or were they already so stupid that they easily became pot-heads? In contrast, I knew a lot of teenage drinkers, too, and they were mostly funny, quick-witted, non-violent, and good story-tellers.

One thing I’m pretty sure of: pot might make you stupid, but doing prison time definitely makes you even stupider. Whatever might turn out to be a sensible policy about marijuana, we should never have been sending kids to jail for smoking a joint or three.

The big problem with an illicit-drug culture, and one of the main reasons I avoided it like the plague, is that you can be the nicest drug-taker in the world, but you have now placed yourself somewhere in a food chain which includes a lot of very very bad people, and by showing up on their radar you have vastly increased the risk of becoming involved with bad people and bad things. Alcohol is legal, so you don’t (necessarily) run this same risk.
