I serously doubt it, if the question were put to them in a clear way.

Current USA “yearly output per person” is approx $65K (GDP $20T), China’s is $10K per person (GDP $15T). But China was a tenth that in Y2K. If China manages to grow its per person output to half that of the US, it will dominate. It’s military will “rule” the lands, seas, sky’s and space; similar to the way the USA world polices now.

When I was in school, the first time I learned the population of MY country it was Two Hundred Million. 200,000,000. I have lived less than half-a-century since that time, and now, as best I can tell, the officially counted population of MY homeland is around Three-Hundred-Thirty-Million. 330,000,000.

Most of that increase has come from immigration. Most of those new people are very different from me and my ancestors. Their people did not make this country, yet they come here because it is better than where they come from. Logic makes this obvious.

1. 2. Use the subsidies and tax breaks now given to oil and coal and gas; use the money to fund green research. But the corporate lobbyists won’t allow this.

3. Stop crypto currencies. The amount of energy used to mine Bitcoins and the like, which is just a Ponzi scheme, could supply a number of nations. But that isn’t kewl, so it won’t happen.

Buzz, I remember an America of 200M people too. Anglo-Celts and Germanics are about the only people here who value the expanse. I don’t see anybody else out on the trails. Always we are told that more people means a bigger pie for all. Always we are told that we aren’t having ‘enough’ children, and the rich must force the population ever higher, and this will all be wonderful. Always we are lied to.

A few decades ago Mexico looked set to become as prosperous as the United States and Canada. The elites deliberately ignited a population explosion, propagandizing that it was every woman’s patriotic duty to have seven kids to make Mexico “Bigger and better.” The result is that Mexico is nearly a failed state, with wages lower than China.

The Syrian government banned the sale and use of contraceptives and also trumpeted that women should have enormous families. The population doubled in 18 years, then doubled again in the next 18 years, then … oops, the water ran out and things fell apart!

The Ivory Coast used to be fairly prosperous. The elites used massive immigration to double the population, and the resulting poverty tore the country apart in a bloody civil war.

I haven’t read this book but I get the feeling that people here are getting it (at least half) wrong. Based on the blurb, Yglesias is advocating not just for increased immigration but for some very alt.righty things that people here would presumably agree with. He wants things that make family formation more affordable. He wants part of that billion to come from natural increase and not just from immigration.

I liked the old, less crowded 200 million person America better too. But let’s say that Yglesias is right and that we need 1 billion people in order to compete with China. Let’s say that America’s leaders vow to do this in a way that will not allow or permit even 1 immigrant – it’s all going to have to come from natural increase. What could the USG do to accomplish this (and in a way that would not require paving over all our farmland or destroy the environment)? Wouldn’t many of these policies be ones that alt.righters favor? People here see red as soon as they see the “immi” word, but think beyond that.

I see here the basis for a new deal with corporate America – we will give you the billion consumers that you want to buy your crap. But they are going to have to be made here and you are going to have to encourage policies that make that happen and not rely on cheap imports. American Made!

I would love a USA of one billion if it was filled with Americans having children. Instead white men from roughly the 1950s onward decided to contracept themselves into a crisis.

“Thinking Bigger” almost always means fake analysis and pointless speculation. I’m reminded of the early 2000s when Thomas Barnett’s was trendy in political and defense circles. His macro-geopolitical writing was basically a game of Risk imagined as reality–baseless speculation about connecting global economies and igniting democratic revolutions all over the globe. Reading his books, it was clear he had never actually traveled to any of the countries he planned to transform, nor did he possess any concrete knowledge beyond poli-sci paradigms.

In this case, what skills or experience does Yglesias have to think about an America of a billion people? Does he have experience in urban infrastructure? Has he surveyed the land that will absorb the 600 million? Does he understand the power grid or water supply? All I see is that he has a podcast and a B.A. in philosophy.

During my lifetime I’ve seen the national parks I’ve loved – Grand Canyon, Zion, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Great Smoky Mountains – become choked with people and traffic. It’s sad that it will only get worse and I feel bad for young Americans who love the outdoors that they will never see those beautiful places as I was lucky enough to see them.

I really don’t believe even Yglesias believes this. Being provocative just gets him on TV, invited to speak, sells his books. He’ll say anything as long as it isn’t ACTUALLY provocative, like Ann Coulter.

But let’s say that Yglesias is right and that we need 1 billion people in order to compete with China. Let’s say that America’s leaders vow to do this in a way that will not allow or permit even 1 immigrant – it’s all going to have to come from natural increase.

First, China’s is trying to shed population and will shed due to their self-imposed low birth rates. Having a billion people in one nation is evidently not a good idea as both China and India seem to have found out. So the idea that we will need a billion people to compete with China is not valid because China doesn’t even seem to want to have a billion people.

Second, it’s not total population that is the driving factor. A lot has to do with the development of your population’s potential and your infrastructure and institutions. Note that Great Britain was able to compete well with larger nations. They out competed larger France, and they even managed to colonize India which had several times their population.

Third, even if we were to increase our population to one billion with the increase coming from Whites alone, it would still not be a good idea. It’s an issue of scale. How large can we scale up a nation and still keep the things we like?

Fourth, what is it with the need to be number one? We currently have been number one for quite some time and look at what it has gotten us. We have the most powerful military in history, yet cannot defend our own borders. We have the largest GDP in history, yet we still have a lot of our fellow citizens doing poorly and killing themselves out of despair. We became the sole super power on the backs of a demographic that is now being actively replaced by its own government. How could China being number one be any worse for the average American than what its own government has done?

The Netherlands is overpopulated, as are many European nations. There is no wilderness, wild forest, open plan, bare mountain, uninhabited desert in the Netherlands. The entire country is a blanket of small towns, tiny villages, small-holding farms, the occasional gardened forest reserve or marsh and a few big cities. There is nowhere to escape. The Dutch keep it together because they are white, intelligent, efficient….well, because they are Dutch. Leaving this aside, since antiquity, puberty has *always* been considered the age of adulthood. If you’re old enough to have kids – you’re old enough to marry, and that’s the age of consent. This morning I took the Florida Turnpike from Kendall to Homestead for the first time in about six months. The amount of undeveloped acreage has dwindled noticeably since the summer of 2019. Today I saw several massive housing developments – some nearing completion – on the site of what was bucolic farmland only half a year ago.

Most of the remaining farms feature large billboards advertising land available for residential and commercial use.

Soon enough, Toronto expands to cover all the arable land in Canada…

China, India, and the other big developing nations are driving the big increases in CO2, China surpassed the US in CO2 emissions a decade ago and by 2012 was already emitting 20 percent more and growing their emissions far faster. Every US solar and wind plant added between the mid-90’s and 2010 amounted to maybe 3 percent of what China alone added in coal fired power plants to their grid, to say nothing of India, which also added a great deal during the same time period.

If you want curb CO2 emissions, the developing world’s emissions has to be reigned in, otherwise you are just shifting factories from the US or the UK to China, India, and Mexico.

What knots has anyone tied themselves into trying to stop the work of illegal human traffickers? Europeans shunting the illegals into neighbors? Trump promising more immigration than ever before?

Regarding Brazil, that’s some dubious cause and effect. In recent years, foreign investment has grown very much, but the gross domestic product barely so, nor is it projected to grow.

I wouldn’t like to see America grow to a billion people (unless they were white), so I’m not defending this goofy idea. I’m just pointing out that if it were to happen, some of the nightmare scenarios about overcrowding and people being packed together like sardines wouldn’t actually come to pass, so it’s not something the planners need to take into account (except as it pertains to responding to the inevitable fearmongering about overcrowding).

As for water, I don’t think there’s any problem that desalination cannot solve. From my back of the envelope calculations – I can never remember the details of this stuff, and I’ve done it about five times – I got the impression it would be possible, with the help of some creative engineering solutions regarding distribution, for the world to draw the entirety of its freshwater supply from desalination. That will almost certainly never be necessary (or if I’m wrong, even possible), but that any supply disruption can be solved with desalination seems to me a certainty.

One possibility is to have a pollution based VAT for various goods. If a good is made in a factory with a smaller carbon footprint, and/or less pollution, then a smaller tax. That way goods made in Chinese factories using coal-powered energy would have a higher tax. As it is, part of the cost of our cheap products is toxic air in China.

As for the carbon footprint, there is the carbon used to create the product, plus the carbon used to ship the product.

So a product made down the street using pure solar or wind energy would have a very small tax.

The effect of such as tax would be to encourage the manufacturing nations to use forms of energy with less pollution and less carbon.

Jews have always preferred large, filthy cities dating back to antiquity. More naive Gentiles to take advantage of.

You well-intentioned guys are missing the point if you don’t include nuclear power in your plans.

The things we would do to fight global warming would also fight other forms of environmental degradation, and have other beneficial effects.

What happens if we decrease immigration to fight global warming? Well, Gaylord Nelson and the ZPG folks were advocating almost no immigration back in the 1960s, before anyone knew about global warming. Halting immigration would help our air, our water, our land. Not to mention higher wages and lower housing costs.

What happens if we get away from fossil fuels? Conserving fossil fuels allows us to use fossil fuels in the future, for example as a supply of plastics, chemicals, drugs, etc. Also, some things, like jet planes, will need fossil fuels no matter what. Conserving fossil fuels keeps the supply up and the cost down.

What happens if we spend money on research for non-fossil fuel energies, such as wind, solar, nuclear, fusion, etc.? We wind up with cheaper, and often renewable, sources of energy. Not to mention, research often has other benefits. For example, the computer revolution was fueled by the Apollo project.

And so on. Pretty much anything we do to stop global warming has beneficial effects even if global warming doesn’t exist.

I think of my late uncle, who was a conservative Republican, but a conservationist. Why? He loved hunting (esp. duck and turkey hunting) skeet shooting, boating, camping, hiking and other outdoors activities. We need people like my late uncle to fight for our planet’s future.

It goes without saying that having “One Billion Americans” is the worst possible thing that could happen to us. It would add lots more problems and make ever single problem we have today far worse.

What this book will do though is highlight what people really think about the US. For those who are open border supporters, their support of “One Billion Americans” this concept will show how crazily dedicated they are to open borders. It might also wake up some people who have been indifferent to immigration when they start to think about what a US with one billion people in it would be like.

It will be very interesting to see how the people who are dedicated to lots more immigration and lots more action on climate change will react. These are two ideas that cannot really be combined. What will they do when they have to decide which one means the most to them and realize that they will have to sacrifice one for the other. Well, for one thing I suppose they will refuse to make the connections and acknowledge that the Earth will have to have fewer people to get real and lasting improvement in our environment.

I did an search to find out what the current response was to this book but I guess it’s not out quite yet because I didn’t find any.

The big assumption is that booga booga people are just the italians/irish today. Mankind learned long ago that there were few products that you could make using “pure solar or wind energy” and earn enough to survive.  That’s why deforestation was a crisis until humanity discovered coal, first for general heating and then for steam power; the stored energy of wood was essential to make it through the times when solar and wind were absent.

Wood was the first “solar + storage”.  IIRC, it stores energy at something like 30 watts per acre averaged over a year.  That was not something an industrial society can live on, and it’s just as true today.

The PRC is a Chinese empire, not a Chinese nation-state. However, they are currently engaged in demographic shenanigans like replacement of ethnic Tibetans with ethnic Chinese, and expansion of Chinese population into Africa via colonies.

Ignoring Chinese imperialism means competing with them on their own terms, which will ultimately mean giving up on decentralized organization, resistance to AI and genetic engineering, free-range childhood and homeschooling, and a variety of other “freedom to fail” lifestyles and choices thst Americans have traditionally cherished.

We should have been fighting Chinese imperialism decades ago to undo the Chicomms’ grip. Perhaps it too late now. I suspect we will wait to do something until the only option is a hot war we are poorly positioned to win.

At a certain point you have to ask what is the problem of these people, if they are really totally mentally deranged or simply trolling us.

My impression is that this is the style of the courtier: one whose only objective is to advance himself by winning the favor of his “superiors.” Sincere belief (or insincere trolling) is not the point in the positions he advances. But neither is mental derangement to blame. Guys like Yglesias see what sells, what gets the attention of the money-people, and they sell it in the most extravagant way.

Look, he’s gotten another book contract out of it, even though the book will be forgotten in five years; even though Yglesias himself will be as memorable as Haynes Johnson once he’s gone.

Courtiers are an old story and they inevitably pop up in any society. But I feel these attention seekers and self-sellers have lately come to dominate. A whore-economy is going to encourage a certain kind of behavior.

And he named his kid “José” (complete with accent) to continue the subterfuge.
