Here’s a lucid thread from Wesley Yang that is related to the theme of my Taki’s Magazine column that will be up later tonight. Unfortunately, I didn’t see it before I finished my essay.

[Ibram X.] Kendi purifies the argument for affirmative action and removes all the complications and ambivalence written into court doctrine around it. He says that the way to know if there is racism present is if disparities are present. If disparities are present, then racism is present.

It’s very hard for liberals that have accepted the case for affirmative action to reject Kendi-ism, though many, like Ezra Klein, are discomfited by the purified version of the fuzzier, hazier practice they’ve embraced.

It’s precisely the fuzzy haziness, however, that made affirmative action a workable kludge in a system purporting to confer rights onto individuals rather than groups and that proclaimed itself meritocratic

And it’s precisely the fuzzy haziness that kept in check the dictatorial dimension of a policy that seeks to equalize group outcomes through government coercion.

In other words, the current murky legal status of and thinking about affirmative action encouraged people to Not Talk About It and, on the positive side, to try to keep it to manageable levels and not get carried away: Johns Hopkins hospital should employ more doctors than it would if it had colorblind hiring, but there wasn’t much to demand that if Baltimore city is 5/8ths black, then 5/8ths of Johns Hopkins’ doctors should be black. Instead, nice people should quietly, very quietly, pick a nice number.

But now Kendi comes along with his somewhat iSteve-like knack for logical reductionism and promotes the idea that any racial disparity is proof of racist policy pushed by racist ideas. Either me, Dr. Prof. Ibram X. Kendi, is right or … Charles Murray is right. Whose side are you on?

Ezra Klein can sense that if Kendi’s principle is put into practice, uh-oh, Zimbabwe here we come in our big cities. But Ezra can’t articulate an objection without putting himself on Charles Murray’s side of the argument, and it will be awhile before that happens.

In 2003, Sandra O’Connor’s ruling anticipated the sunsetting of affirmative action in 25 years.

The energy in the culture and its dominant institutions (schools, corporations, the federal government) is lurching toward the Kendi-ian terminus even as the 6-3 SCOTUS majority moves toward the Harvard Asian-American lawsuit

Back in the early 1980’s, the conservative movement founded the Federalist society in a bid to recapture the courts from what they regarded as a liberal consensus legislating from the bench.

At around the same time, the Critical Race Theory movement in law schools began advancing a radical critique of American institutions as irremediably tainted by a foundational racism

Both of these projects reached the end of two respective long marches through institutions toward the end of the Trump administration

My gut tells me that the nominally conservative, right wing supermajority on the court is too much a vessel of elite consensus to make a frontal assault on an elite moving rapidly toward Kendi-ism. It may rein things in on the margins.

Conservatives chose to invest in taking back the courts; progressives in winning the educational apparatus and culture. We will find out who invested more wisely.

Related, I think, is the paper by, I believe, Linda Gottfredson, that found (with my interpretation and embellishments):

— During the affirmative action era, in effect blacks were given a 0.5 standard deviation handicap in hiring.

— In other words, employers decided to, for average office employees, hire a cohort of blacks who tested 7 or 8 IQ points beneath the whites in the same job. Gottfredson started out as a vocational psychologist and this was a favorite area for her.

— This was the evolutionary outcome of employer behavior, not an Elders of Zion™ explicit plan or conspiracy.

— By giving blacks a 0.5 handicap, the hiring gap was partially alleviated, while at the same time no particular workplace was burdened with really stupid people way out of their depth. The economy still moved on. White, et al. employees could babysit, monitor, and otherwise keep an eye on black employee output as long as they were no more than 0.5 SD down. This led to gripes (“I have to work twice as hard”) from blacks, but was generally kept in check.

— Some occupations, particularly in STEM and very high-level jobs, did not have a black handicap and thus had few or no blacks; some DMV style jobs had a larger handicap.

— For public consumption companies supported full-blown affirmative action, and publicly blacks would erupt in protests from time to time.

— This Rube Goldberg regime would seem to be precarious, but it hit a symbiotic sweet spot and was remarkably stable for decades.

“Equity” is simply someone calling out the emperor’s new clothes, and Kendi is simply the child who doesn’t know any better than to notice and say what is obviously true: that blacks have been permanently shut out of population proportionality in higher level jobs.

The bomb that Kendi threw led to Charles Murray publishing his book pointing out that yeah, Ibram, it turns out that blacks in fact are dumber than other groups, and no, nobody hates you. Nobody is happy about it, but absolute black proportionality would kill the money tree that blacks depend on, yet have no understanding of.

  2. It is all very well winning the courts, but if someone asks “what else could cause racial disparities other than racism” and your answer is long-winded or unpalatable, your answer will be crowded out.

    The question is why do people find “racism” to be such a palatable answer? They must really need to see it, because it is not a pretty thing to see everywhere at all.

    Affirmative action is here to stay friends. Not that I approve of it, but I believe majority of the elite see it is the only sane option, pretty much a cold-blooded business decision. The elite know that nothing can be done to improve black performance, and in many respects, they tacitly acknowledge the lower average IQ of the majority of blacks. So what to do about a relatively small (13%) portion of the population that has the troubling tendency to be incredibly violent and to act out randomly? You mollify the smartest portion of the black community with affirmative action in terms of elite school admissions and jobs. That keeps the black community from ever being organized in a credible and more lethal way. The downsides of affirmative action (poorer job of performance by blacks in elite schools and in damn-near every profession) are all acceptable outcomes in order to keep the peace. The answer to dealing with the majority of blacks who are not educated or motivated enough to receive any form of affirmative action? Move to the suburbs and stay far away from them at all costs.

    The GOP won back House seats in 2020 by means of explicit recruitment of women candidates. The inevitable outcome is that either in 2022 or later they will issue a demand that whites are no more than 50% of the candidates.

    Indeed, Kevin McCarthy should retire and endorse a Hispanic to fill his seat.

    Steve, Kendi is not asking for proportional representation. He’s asking for it ALL. Which is going to cause widespread civil conflict. Elites siding with US. Because the only way for blacks to have it ALL is Whites even elites to have none.

    Hence CRT pushback. If it was just dirt people, that would have been ignored. Even better pushed down their throats and their kids told they were genetically evil and should give up all ambition and let black people take over.

    But its elite kids. The kids of FBI Agents. Of Congressional Aides. Of Marketing Managers. Of Hedge Fund managers. And their parents feel the heat that they themselves are not far behind.

    What is hard wired, and impossible to eradicate in any large scale, is the dynastic impulse. Families in the vast majority want better for their kids. Even it if means Heresy of the Holy Black people as racial redeemers.

    So yes, the Ascendancy, the black/mulatto elite like Jussie Smollett, Talcum X aka Sean King, Susan Rice, figure all their relatives should supplant say, Nancy Pelosis and Bill Clintons and Chucky Schumer’s. That guarantees that some (not all) are going to side with Deplorable Dirt people just to keep their gains and pass them on to their kids.

    Given the size of the Ascendancy, and its stranglehold on the Federal Government, well you be the judge how it ends up.

    Affirmative Action was always a long-range disaster. Eventually blacks would demand ALL positions be black, and that would guarantee conflict on a very nasty, national scale. The can has been kicked down the road to where the road ends.

    Agreed. As Thomas Sowell has pointed out, there can even be significant disparities with the children, who have the same parents, of a family. Disparities in achievement is endemic to the human condition. For all of his acclaim, and the fawning by the liberal elite, Kendi is plainly not intelligent enough to recognize this.

    No it is not. Because its not mathematically sustainable. As Whites become smaller and smaller, White elites have a harder time keeping their position, power, and status.

    Now, maybe they all have achieved enlightenment and no longer care about those things and will hand them over to non-Whites and blacks in particular. And maybe space aliens will travel here and reveal Bigfoot, Chupacabra, and Werewolves are real.

    But more and more blacks specifically will demand the jobs held by Whites in the elite. This is sure to create conflict. Conflict that spreads, and engulfs every part of society, every organization, every neighborhood, every place. You think this is a stable situation. It is not.

    And thats not even counting declining standards of living for even Upper Tier Elites (just beyond the millionaires and big shot politicians). Inflation hits them too. As critically, do college admissions. Is it stable when a hedge fund manager with money, power, and connections cannot get his kid into at least NYU? Because all the slots are black only? No.

    I think private industry will wriggle out of it – a few years of making a big deal about their new and beefed up DIE department, but in the end most of their “diverse” employees work in the cafeteria or cleaning staff.

    On the other hand, I think a lot of municipal governments and school districts go in on proportional (or more) representation hard, and the result are legions of barely/not competent and unfireable employees that will be in place for a generation. A lot of currently functioning cities and schools are heading down the toilet. It’s essentially the USPS model brought to every major city and school system.

    Some of the details of all this NXVIM stuff vaguely remind me of the orgy scenes from Stanley Kubrick’s popular 1999 film “Eyes Wide Shut.”

    NXIVM appears to be very Jewish. Raniere’s sex slave “Natalie” was being monitored by an Israeli and even the FBI. The FBI. Um, what?

    While most victims are women, another bizarre story involves a motherless child who is being raised by NXIVM.

    NXIVM is keeping a small boy. I wonder what will happen to him. Only good things, I’m sure. Someone should offer him an “internship” with pizza connoisseur John Podesta.

He will also be much more palatable to woman than Trump who they thought of as an orange ogre. He will mitigate this racial insanity. Trump, the kingmaker will step aside early next year and throw his full weight behind Ronald Dion DeSantis who will be tasked with saving America and giving us another 50 years of semi prosperity.     The Russians only had to put up with this system for 70-years. America will probably have to deal with it…counting the last 70 years…140 years, max!

    Really though, I’m betting on a full generation or two. Genuine expectations are the Empire, either beginning first with the Phillipines and Cuba, WWI, or possibly WWII, is already pushing 80-120 years.

    A therapist listened to the account of “Teresa.” This therapist had previously provided mental care to dozens of individuals who had been subject to Satanic ritual abuse. Interestingly, he found that the accounts of these dozens of individuals (including “Teresa”) reported similar accounts of sexual abuse, ritual killings, and Satanic ceremonies. Their accounts were similar, despite them NEVER meeting in real life. How would this be the case if they were lying? This discussed at 6 minutes into the video.

    Apparently, there were doctors and nurses in this cult.

    According to “Teresa,” dead bodies were dissolved in tubs of acid.

    Some members of this cult were arrested by the police and charged.

    Before you dismiss this, watch the above video. The above video was produced by “60 Minutes Australia.” So they’re not random internet posters. They’re a credible, popular news network.

    Some of the above details match accounts of Satanic cults in America. Cults like “The Finders” and the Larry King network in Omaha.

    People talk a lot about the elite sex trafficking rings, but Satanic Occultism is even more disturbing.

    The famous British entertainer Jimmy Savile (who sexually abused over 1,000 children) was accused of Satanic ritual abuse. In one instance, Savile tied a girl to a Satanic altar and raped her at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire, in 1975.

    This is probably the most likely outcome, except because the left’s moral case for affirmative action provides that it is remediation – white males benefited from unfair advantages in the past, therefore they should suffer unfair disadvantages now. Kendi says this explicitly. “The only remedy to racist discrimination is antiracist discrimination. The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination.” So the formulae in Kendistan will likely include no floor quota for white males.

    One of the most ridiculous elements of the affirmative action “kludge” (really, “noble lies” told by the ruling class) is that it is wholly positive discrimination – they’re not harming anyone, just helping those who are in need. Despite being afforded multiple standards of deviation advantages in University admissions over whites, no black has ever been admitted to any University as a consequence of affirmative action (how dare you say so!). Also, and simultaneously, if we stopped using affirmative action in admissions, black representation would fall precipitously. It’s not discrimination against white males to discriminate in favor of everyone else for a limited universe of desirable opportunities.

    The ruling class needs to obscure its contradictions, which contradictions are necessary to manage its failing, decades long multicultural experiment. (They could have asked Lee Kuan Yew 50 years ag0). The rationale becomes more ridiculous as the commands not to notice become more insistent and carry weightier penalties. In the 1960s-1970s, the United States was effectively biracial – the population consisted of an overwhelming majority of whites and a discrete minority of black descendants of American slaves. I think that they thought that a generation or so of giving blacks a boost in education and employment would create some parity. But it obviously didn’t work – so now we’re treated to ever more bizarre rationalizations for black underperformance – so slavery becomes more responsible for black failure the more distant it is in time from their present underperformance. Of course, the United States is no longer 90-10 white, and everyone but white males to include recent arrivals have been invited to take a step ahead of them via de jure racial and sex-based advantages. This is a radical departure even from the dubious original moral case for advantaging American descendants of slaves.

    Pan-ethnic Christian universalism was a powerful force when whites were spreading their culture and genes all over the world. Paul’s “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus” resonated in a Greco-Roman world in which ethnic differences may have been profound, but racial differences were not.

    For example, MIT has a very strict quota system to ensure that their classes are almost 50/50 male/female (actually 53/47) which entails considerable “Affirmative Action” on behalf of female applicants – females get in at twice the rate of men. (This is not as bad as it sound because the overall rate is only 4%, so you have something like a 3% acceptance rate for men and a 6% rate for women – in other words 94 out of every 100 women are turned away vs 97 out of every 100 men.)

    However, once you get to MIT, there is no effort made to gender balance the individual “courses” in MITspeak (what everyone else calls majors or departments).     BTW, this kind of informal looking the other way is done not just wrt race but also gender.

    For example, MIT has a very strict quota system to ensure that their classes are almost 50/50 male/female (actually 53/47) which entails considerable “Affirmative Action” on behalf of female applicants – females get in at twice the rate of men. (This is not as bad as it sound because the overall rate is only 4%, so you have something like a 3% acceptance rate for men and a 6% rate for women – in other words 94 out of every 100 women are turned away vs 97 out of every 100 men.)

    From a long-term, societal perspective wouldn’t it be better if instead of favoring women in admissions there was a selective but less competitive women’s technically-inclined college in Cambridge which accepted the “3 out of 100” or so women who are now accepted at M.I.T. in order to achieve its gender balance? The M.I.T.’s “sister school” would provide a curriculum including both “hard” maths and sciences together with the lighter fare favored by women. The “gender balance” spots would go to some fraction of the qualified men now turned away and relegated to lesser schools. M.I.T. and its sister school would promote socializing between the students at both schools, breeding a second generation of super nerds and maintaining the morale of the top tier (overwhelmingly male) nerds at M.I.T. Anyway, this is how we used to do these things before mandatory stupidity became enshrined in every aspect of American life.

    Anyway, I don’t suppose China is pissing away rarefied opportunities on those without the aptitude on the one hand, while simultaneously pissing away the natural talents of a large share of its brightest young people on the other. This nonsense was an extravagant indulgence in the postwar period when the United States had no real near-peer rivals. It can no longer be tolerated when half of the world is coming on line to challenge the United States on multiple fronts.

We may be witnessing a return of our cities to the decrepit 70’s.

Italian Americans also didn’t really assimilate until the immigration pipeline was turned off. As you imply, most charitably they are hoping to leverage the ambiguity to invoke into existence a reality where everyone really is always equal. As you also imply, more realistically they’re just cowards taking an easy off ramp that sounds good but perpetuates the underlying problem.

    In the past, Steve has suggested debugging the Jefferson Ambiguity by restating the Declaration of Independence as “all men are created equal, in that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”, thereby making explicit what the equality consists of.

    I think he’s right about what Jefferson meant, but even rightwingers are loath to insert two new letters into Historical Documents, lest the left do the same (nevermind the left is already effectively doing the same without bothering to amend the texts, just by getting some traitor in a black robe to declare a new meaning to the existing text).

    So my alternative (but not mutually exclusive) suggestion is to emphasize the word “created” to point out:

    The principle involved is a simple one – everyone has to follow the law whether you agree with it or not. French doesn’t make the law. The elected representatives of the people have passed these anti-boycott laws. French doesn’t enforce them. It’s up to the state AG to decide if you have broken the law or not.     You’ve written a bit about Black Supremacism, right? I guess the complement is White Cowardice, and the willingness of White cowards to conceal their failing in a cloud of faux virtue.

    We’d have to examine instances of White cowardice (or maybe “fecklessness” might be a better term in many cases) on a case-by-case basis to avoid flailing about.

    For example, goodthinking Whites in Ohio have been driving “fairness” in school funding for a few decades, which amounts to White school districts subsidizing Black school districts. Black leaders, some of them, are actually opposed to “fairness”. Why? Because Black school districts are already massively subsidized so that per pupil costs are double that of suburban White districts with the usual dismal results. “Fairness” would actually cut into the “school baksheesh” (my term) used to mollify Black elites with folding money for patronage and crony hires.

    This nonsense was an extravagant indulgence in the postwar period when the United States had no real near-peer rivals. It can no longer be tolerated when half of the world is coming on line to challenge the United States on multiple fronts.

    Pithily summarized but old habits die hard and the politicians act as if things were just like what they were before. One of the ways to spot the decline of a country is to look at its finances and currently the USG federal taxes account for only 40 cents to a dollar of spending. The rest is borrowed from…the Federal bank as foreigners are no longer buying US debt they have been net sellers mainly because the bond market is rigged by the Feds and their’s no true yield discovery on bonds. The ghost of Robert Mugabe approves of this.

    The elite do apparently believe this, but they are wrong. Controlling blacks has never been a problem. The Civil War was not a war between blacks and whites. Apartheid was not stopped or even threatened by blacks. De-colonization did not feature blacks throwing off their white colonial oppressors. Etc.

    It’s doubtful that depriving black communities of their natural leaders reduces violence there. So, not only is AA not necessary to contain black violence, it’s probably counterproductive. Violence levels among blacks have not gone down when their oppression was lifted. Just the opposite.

For example, at some times and places the state thought that it was “immoral” for you not to attend a particular church every Sunday. But the Founding Fathers thought that was none of the Federal government’s business which church you went to or if you went to church at all.

    If you’re white or Asian, not connected, and fail to check the correct cultural boxes, the Ivy League will ignore you. They have lots of high scorers to choose from. They don’t want to sully their purity-spiraling hands with your flyover backwards ass. Their classes are “curated”.

    And now they’re dropping test scores altogether, so whatever meager lifeline high scores offered is being cast back into the abyss.
