Immigration helps explain Sweden’s school trouble
Gabriel Heller Sahlgren 10 August 2015 17:56Sweden’s education performance has faltered in the past decades, with scores tumbling in the OECD’s international Pisa survey since the early 2000s. Both the Guardian and the BBC have recently looked into this phenomenon.
I’m a fan of the giant international PISA tests, but I’m not a huge fan of trusting minor differences between countries or differences over time in one country to support whatever your favorite theory might be. What goes into influencing PISA scores is extremely complicated and murky, and I’m far from convinced that things as ephemeral as, say, how big of a pep rally they hold for the students taking the test don’t matter.
There’s no shortage of explanations for the poor results, but British enemies of school reform have latched on to one of them: the free schools reform of the early 1990s, which they claim sent the system into chaos.
You’ll notice how the naysayers never give any evidence to back up their claims. …
Why, then, are Swedish schools struggling? There are many hypotheses floating around, some more plausible than others. Yet there has been no hard evidence for any of them. Until now.
On the other hand, there are often ways to perform all-else-being-equal analyses on PISA scores. For example, I’ve long pointed out that although America’s PISA scores are notoriously mediocre overall, on a race-by-race basis they’re closer to Not Bad.
Similarly, the PISA tests break out the scores of first and second generation immigrants, allowing the following type of quite legitimate analysis to be done:
Two weeks ago, I published a paper [in Swedish] at the Research Institute of Industrial Economics and an op-ed in the largest Swedish daily about the impact of immigration on Sweden’s Pisa scores. Quite a row followed. Why? Well, it turns out that the change in pupil demographics due to immigration explains almost a third of the average decline between 2000 and 2012: 19 per cent in mathematical literacy, 28 per cent in reading literacy, and 41 per cent in scientific literacy. The effect is especially pronounced in recent years, coinciding with accelerating refugee immigration. Indeed, between 2009 and 2012, 43 per cent of the average Pisa score decline is explained by altered demographics: a full 29 per cent in mathematical literacy, 45 per cent in reading literacy, and 62 per cent in scientific literacy.
In the paper, I also calculate that 11 per cent of the overall decline can be attributed directly to the decreasing share of pupils with a Swedish background, while 18 per cent can be attributed to the fact that results among pupils with an immigrant background have fallen more significantly. The latter is clearly displayed by the next graph. While scores among pupils with a Swedish background have declined by 22 points between 2000 and 2012, scores among pupils with an immigrant background have fallen by 39 points – and the performance gap between the two groups has grown from 36 points to 53 points.
These are strong effects. In fact, the change in pupil demographics is the only factor that we know for sure has contributed to Sweden’s falling scores. Furthermore, the full impact is probably somewhat larger. This is because immigration may also have lowered performance among pupils with a Swedish background, for instance through the redistribution of resources to immigrant pupils. While this is a more difficult subject to study, the most relevant paper suggests modest negative effects in this respect. It’s therefore probable that the total impact of changed pupil composition is higher than reported here.
Even with this effect included, immigration is nevertheless unlikely to be the only reason behind Sweden’s falling educational performance. While the left’s arguments have been debunked, there are more plausible explanations, explored elsewhere by myself and my colleague Dr Tino Sanandaji. In short: the rise of an overly progressive educational culture is likely to be an important culprit. Incidentally, as my recent monograph shows, this is also relevant for understanding declining Pisa scores in Finland, the longstanding pin-up model of school choice and accountability critics.

Otago Province which is overwhelmingly Pakeha (European) does best at school. Here being PI or Maori is “cool”. Pakeha children are much more susceptible to peer pressure to be cool than Asian kids and it helps foster a couldn’t-care-less attitude in diverse schools. Maori kids speak US ghetto. Not to be to much of a school marm, but this is why censorship of truly trashy stuff is a good thing. Kids should not be hearing nasty gangsta rap. It really is degrading. I know, I know, I love free speech, too. But at some point there has to be some compromise of ideals with reality.

If their parents won't exert influence over what they allow their children to see and hear, it's certainly not society's job to do so. We had various speech codes before, and they were terrible. We're currently instituting speech codes based on 'political correctness' - it's one of the reasons Mr. Sailer's various sites tend to be categorized as 'hate speech'.

Sweden was neutral in WWII, as a consequence, the prewar political alignments were preserved, and their society doesn’t fear totalitarian rule as much as its neighbors.

When people ask me why I’m not into professional sports, and the NFL in particular, I point to incidents like these.
(Baseball seemed a bit of exception as many of its fans are more stat guys who love the strategy.)
Listen to sports radio hosts and their callers some time, and you will see what I'm talking about. They really do display a serious undercurrent of homosexuality. I think that it's ridiculous that grown men take interest in children's games. I know so many adult men who are obsessed with a bunch of guys who get paid to throw around a ball. Some of my coworkers spend their lunch break looking up the stats of high school players who are looking to commit university sports programs. It's just bizarre. Most men at my workplace (most of whom are college-educate) don't even understand the basics of America's immigration or trade policies, but they can offer a thorough discussion of the West Coast offense.
I think that a lot of American men lack masculinity in their own lives, so they live vicariously through athletes. If they're younger, they also live vicariously through entertainers and celebrities. Americans have always been sports oriented, but these days sports enthusiasm is just so over the top.
On the other hand, I personally watch a lot of football. So maybe I'm no better........

There are still plenty of good Pakeha players like Ritchie McCaw and Dan Carter. The browning of the All Blacks really just reflects the browning of NZ. Yeah, that accent thing is weird. I had a half black half Vietnamese adopted cousin who talked normal Des Moines-speak like the rest of her family until about 12-13. Then she started the head bobbing, butt-shaking and ghetto-speak stuff. The whole package. Weirdest thing. I saw her in March or so, and by my Christmas visit she had gone full ghetto. Everyone pretended not to notice. Weird. Last I heard (20 years ago) she was hooking in DC/VA area.
Yeah but Sweden’s only world class female mma fighter, Pannie Kianzad, is a child of Persian immigrants. So they have that going for them.
My kids go to a Swedish primary school that is 95% Swedish, 99% white. In previous school in the antipodes(with tiger mums ever-present) parents were kept on toes trying keep up with all the homework. Swedish school finishes at 130pm and seems more like half-day day-care. No marks are given. You have a nice child, with lots of energy and their Swedish is improving.

Sweden is busy adopting America’s demographics except the Hispanics. MENA is a good substitute.
Instead, Hollywood and US media spread the notion of the holy Negro, nice Negro, noble Negro, and etc. And even when Negroes are not so nice, they are the Kool Negro of rap and sports culture. And the EU just sucks all this up. As Europe was without a black crime problem for a long long time and as most whites lived in safe communities, their only view of blacks was a noble victims of 'racism' or cool stars of sports and funky music. And even when Europeans saw black athletes like Ali whup white folks, they patronizingly saw it as 'black justice' against history of 'white racism', also the theme of UNFORGIVABLE BLACKNESS. If US media had been controlled by HBD forces, then the truth would have gotten out in so many words and images that BLACKS ARE BIG TROUBLE DUE TO BIOLOGICAL FACTORS.
So, if you have blacks in your country, keep them under control and try not to increase their population. If you don't have blacks, do NOT import them from Africa. Consider it a blessing that your nation is black-free. Don't think of it as a national deficiency that you don't have basketball stars and rapper shits. Instead, US media and culture either presented blacks are cool stars of sports/music or poor helpless victims of 'racism' who need the compassion of goody good wiberals. EU feels both inferior to the US for having fewer colorful blacks and feels superior to the US for being more 'anti-racist' --- unlike all those gun-wielding white American 'racists' who gun down black babies and gentle giants.
So, to the people of EU, allowing massive black African immigration is like killing two birds with one stone. They get Cool diversity and they get to show Americans the PROPER and DECENT way to treat the Negroes. Unlike Americans who brought them over as slaves and discriminated against them, Europe will welcome and embrace blacks as free immigrants and shower them with love and care.
EU savors this kind of 'therapy' because it felt so morally inferior to the US during 20th century when it tore itself apart and relied on US in both World Wars to come to the rescue. US also protected Western Europe from Communist Russia. It doesn't feel good for Europeans to feel morally inferior to a crass, materialist, young, upstart nation. How nice for Europeans to feel morally superior to Americans at least in their handling of blacks. When it comes to Jews, Europeans killed them while Americans saved them. But when it comes to blacks, Europeans can feel morally superior since their blacks weren't brought as slaves and didn't suffer JimCrow.Also, even though Europeans know they have a great cultural legacy, they see it as dead museum culture, moribund and lacking in populist vitality. They see the vitality is pop culture American style, and since Negroes are big in the music scene --- it appears reggae is the favorite genre of rich whites all over the world --- , Europeans feel their culture is at a dead end unless it has a Negro to provide the juice. It's like what the negro offered the nuns in LILIES OF THE FIELD and what Whoopie offered to the nuns in some dumbass movie. Anyway, it's all about the control of media and academia. If media and academia were in the hands of people who know the truth and sounded the alarm all around the world, EU would not be taking in tons of Negroes. They would learn that Negroes are the #1 problem in the US.
I dare say 80% of all the real long-term problems in the US has to do with Negroes. If we HBD people had control of the media, we would have sounded the alarm long ago, and all borders would have been closed. But what kind of people control the media in the US? NYT and Hollywood. And people like Spielberg and Tarantino make stuff like LINCOLN and DJANGO UNCHAINED(that flatters a German-European for siding with a Negro against American whites). And I'm sure all Swedish kids have been exposed to 1200 Reich a Slave. EU doesn't know the truth, just like whites in predominantly northern states in the US don't know; the small numbers of blacks in their communities tend to be better behaved. As for lousy black behavior elsewhere, it gets drowned out by public education and mass media and pop culture that suppress black crime while promoting black nobility. If you live in a nice quiet town in Minnesota and rely on national media, you don't know the crap that is happening in blackening America. And as big cities become more gentrified, the haute urban Libs will know less too. In the 70s and 80s, even urban Libs couldn't miss the reality, which is why Ed Koch sometimes got aggressive about blacks and why so many NYers sided with Bernie Goetz. I saw an episode of ALIAS, and it was non-stop promotion of the Noble Negro dude. That sort of thing got so pervasive that Americans elected Cosby as 'America's dad'. Well, look at the real Cosby now. And Americans elevated Oprah into some holy godmother. And Obama was made president and even given a Nobel for having done nothing. Sweden and EU emulate the US because US has been spreading so many lies about itself.
Most Europeans don't seek the truth, and it's more difficult to find the truth over there cuz of greater censorship on speech. So, your average Swede is likely to know Negroes from GREEN MILE and Hip Hop culture(that does feature black thugs but in a glamorized manner that seems more exciting than threatening) than from any news source that speaks the truth. It's gonna end like the final scene in ZARDOZ. Tragic beyond belief.

Depends on who you ask. The real difference is between people who need to open their mouth to be identified as foreigners and those whose skin reveal they’re foreigners.

It actually looks like the much despised and reviled Sweden Democrats will be the largest party in the next election, which is pretty amazing. They were less than one percentage point behind the leading party in the last major poll. Unfortunately what is happening is that all the other parties are banding together into essentially a single party based solely on the religion of mass third-world immigration. Total insanity.
I went to Niagara Falls today. We were the rare White Americans there. I am not kidding. I have no idea who these people were, if they were immigrants or foreign tourists.
I could see across to the river to the Canadian side. We were on The Maid of the Mist boat that goes past American Falls and up almost to Horseshoe falls. On the way back it came close to the equivalent dock where the Canadian version, The Hornblower, was loading. The people there all had on those hooded plastic ponchos they hand out so I couldn’t see the people perfectly in order to tell if they were white or what. But once we got the same distance to the American dock, it was obvious those people were not white. So by comparison I assume the Canadian boat was mostly loading whites.
This is my third little trip out from the white town I now live in. This trip was amazing in the contrast. There is no “diversity” in these brown people. The only variation in faces was in the occasional white. Anyone that is young today is just getting the shaft compared to the way people looked when I was a kid. I just wonder how in hell are these genes going to all mix together and create a people that is even a fraction of what I experienced growing up. When I was a kid there were handsome families everywhere. Now, they are so rare, you really notice them. You should have seen California in 1975. Or even Texas. When I was going to college at the Univ of Texas in 1980, I really thought I was in heaven, the best school in the best state in the best country (A little Texas chauvinism there). There were gorgeous people everywhere. Now they are few and far between.

I call BS on social democrats being vaguely attached to Nazism. Before WWII most of the upper classes were very much pro-Germany but it was German culture and the Germany of old they supported.

Staying out of the war: anyone who seriously thinks Sweden should have behaved differently considering Germany had just defeated France, UK, and most of the rest of Europe is delusional. Country Swedes. Sweden is not all Stockholm and Göteborg.
I lived for years is Sweden. First off, irrespective of immigration, Swedes are very lax in disciplining their children. It has long been illegal to strike a kid there and kids usually run wild and do things that would never be accepted in the States. The education system has long been oriented towards bringing the lowest performers up – intelligent kids were an embarrassment and instead of encouraged to move ahead, they were held back and used to help bring up the slacker students. In fact Sweden was all about mediocrity, I’m a working class advocate myself but I have to admit back then, thirty years ago, the working class had way too much power there and seriously kept the weak bourgeoisie in check.
But with the onslaught of mass 3rd world immigration, the Swedish authorities had to allow “free” or charter schools so that indigenous Swedish parents could find “good” schools that were free of the immigrant taint. Otherwise the Swedish people would not have accepted mass immigration. So for the most part poor immigrants are stuck in immigrant areas and go to schools mostly with other immigrants. Swedish kids generally get to be educated with their own kind.
So a whole bunch of privatized “free” schools have opened in Sweden. But the “free” schools are seriously lax and exaggerate the Swedish tendency to pamper their children. No grades are given and no studying is expected. Often they are even more lax than public schools. They practically give the kids answers to tests to keep their test scores up. There are only a very few elite schools where standards are high.
I know one parent who was telling me his kid had a test to study for but the kid refused and instead played computer games (father’s a total wus). There were some study questions and the kid could not answer anything. The parent decided to let the kid fail to make an example (also it was the easy way out to avoid confronting his kid). Anyway the kid came home the next day with a super high score and said that the teachers had in one way or another, given the kids the answers. This kid absolutely never studies after school which shocks his Swedish father, himself a product of a relatively lax system, although the shock is not enough to encourage the father to confront his child and do anything about it. Politically the father is a radical, Ayn Rand loving libertarian who hates the state and socialism but loves immigration.
So immigration is not only directly to blame for the low scores, but also indirectly, through the “free” schools, it has allowed existing weaknesses to metastasize further throughout the system.
When I talk to other Westerners living in Sweden, it is the one thing everyone agrees on: the Swedish education system is total crap. But somehow they have managed to be a successful country up until now. But combining the native weakness of the education system with the overwhelming negative impacts of mass 3rd world immigration, the future is anything but bright for Sweden. Seriously, they will be the first EU nation to fall to Islamist rule.

Anyway, it’s all about the control of media and academia. If media and academia were in the hands of people who know the truth and sounded the alarm all around the world, EU would not be taking in tons of Negroes. They would learn that Negroes are the #1 problem in the US.

The Sweden Democrats are an interesting case. The current leadership obviously joined a almost neo-Nazi party but has successfully steered them away from that and in the meantime removed skinheads, people who can't keep their racist opinions to themselves and others deemed surplus to requirements. I’m with you. I’d been drifting away from enjoying big-time professional and college sports – particularly football and basketball – for awhile for a variety of reasons (not having too many players that looked like me was certainly one of them), but, ironically, it was something that I read here on iSteve that put the nail in the coffin. Somebody noted that the slavish devotion that so many men show to professional (and college) athletes was frankly gay.

Listen to sports radio hosts and their callers some time, and you will see what I’m talking about. They really do display a serious undercurrent of homosexuality. Otherwise the Swedish people would not have accepted mass immigration. So for the most part poor immigrants are stuck in immigrant areas and go to schools mostly with other immigrants. Swedish kids generally get to be educated with their own kind.
So a whole bunch of privatized “free” schools have opened in Sweden. But the “free” schools are seriously lax and exaggerate the Swedish tendency to pamper their children. No grades are given and no studying is expected. Often they are even more lax than public schools. They practically give the kids answers to tests to keep their test scores up. There are only a very few elite schools where standards are high.
I know one parent who was telling me his kid had a test to study for but the kid refused and instead played computer games (father's a total wus). There were some study questions and the kid could not answer anything. The parent decided to let the kid fail to make an example (also it was the easy way out to avoid confronting his kid). Anyway the kid came home the next day with a super high score and said that the teachers had in one way or another, given the kids the answers. This kid absolutely never studies after school which shocks his Swedish father, himself a product of a relatively lax system, although the shock is not enough to encourage the father to confront his child and do anything about it. Politically the father is a radical, Ayn Rand loving libertarian who hates the state and socialism but loves immigration.
So immigration is not only directly to blame for the low scores, but also indirectly, through the “free” schools, it has allowed existing weaknesses to metastasize further throughout the system.
When I talk to other Westerners living in Sweden, it is the one thing everyone agrees on: the Swedish education system is total crap. But somehow they have managed to be a successful country up until now. You are absolutely right in your description of the Swedish school system and how the majority of Swedes are brought up. What this has done, however, is to create a generation of computer experts and IT entrepreneurs . If you were bright you had to find something to do since you didn’t really have school work. People born mid 60’s to mid 80’s are very creative and have managed very well despite the schools. After them it’s chaos and partly due to the good students fleeing the public schools and the good students ending up in “free” schools based on free Ipads and such.

I think that it’s ridiculous that grown men take interest in children’s games. I know so many adult men who are obsessed with a bunch of guys who get paid to throw around a ball. Some of my coworkers spend their lunch break looking up the stats of high school players who are looking to commit university sports programs. It’s just bizarre. Most men at my workplace (most of whom are college-educate) don’t even understand the basics of America’s immigration or trade policies, but they can offer a thorough discussion of the West Coast offense.
I think that a lot of American men lack masculinity in their own lives, so they live vicariously through athletes. If they’re younger, they also live vicariously through entertainers and celebrities. Americans have always been sports oriented, but these days sports enthusiasm is just so over the top.
On the other hand, I personally watch a lot of football. So maybe I’m no better……..
There was an interesting movie that was inspired by culture of obsessive American male sports fans.
A bunch of middle-age overweight white guys fawn over some muscular 20-something black guy because he can catch a ball. At the same time, they remain generally apathetic about the economic and culture degeneration of their country. It’s really strange when you think about it.

It’s not censorship–it’s discipline about behavior and conduct. School environments result in the social and cultural cues that children acquire–hence their conduct and behavior. Peer pressure–going along to get along–has far more influence than teachers or parents. As society operates the schools, it makes it society’s job to set the terms of disciple and structure, i.e. boundaries and rules regarding what is acceptable, and what is expected.

But with the onslaught of mass 3rd world immigration, the Swedish authorities had to allow “free” or charter schools so that indigenous Swedish parents could find “good” schools that were free of the immigrant taint. Otherwise the Swedish people would not have accepted mass immigration. So for the most part poor immigrants are stuck in immigrant areas and go to schools mostly with other immigrants. Swedish kids generally get to be educated with their own kind.
So a whole bunch of privatized “free” schools have opened in Sweden. But the “free” schools are seriously lax and exaggerate the Swedish tendency to pamper their children. No grades are given and no studying is expected. Often they are even more lax than public schools. They practically give the kids answers to tests to keep their test scores up. There are only a very few elite schools where standards are high.
I know one parent who was telling me his kid had a test to study for but the kid refused and instead played computer games (father's a total wus). There were some study questions and the kid could not answer anything. The parent decided to let the kid fail to make an example (also it was the easy way out to avoid confronting his kid). Anyway the kid came home the next day with a super high score and said that the teachers had in one way or another, given the kids the answers. This kid absolutely never studies after school which shocks his Swedish father, himself a product of a relatively lax system, although the shock is not enough to encourage the father to confront his child and do anything about it. Politically the father is a radical, Ayn Rand loving libertarian who hates the state and socialism but loves immigration.
So immigration is not only directly to blame for the low scores, but also indirectly, through the “free” schools, it has allowed existing weaknesses to metastasize further throughout the system.
When I talk to other Westerners living in Sweden, it is the one thing everyone agrees on: the Swedish education system is total crap. But somehow they have managed to be a successful country up until now. Yes, experienced a variation of this first-hand when I was part of a cohort of white kids bused to a black elementary school in large mid-South city in the early 70s. The school was made 50-50 and the classes were 50-50 but it ended up that after a very brief time of trying to incorporate both groups of children into discussions the teachers began teaching to the white children (on average 2 grades or more ahead of the blacks) and made peremptory efforts to include the black kids in discussions without putting them in too many embarrassing situations (learned quickly as it became apparent a large percent of the 4th grade blacks couldn’t read).

Even so, so it does presuppose some basic academic preparation, so a modest decline in PISA scores is not surprising when one considers that a mere 14% (sic!) of Swedish 8th graders can do basic fractions. Because the colonists (immigrants) are weapons in political wars in the west. The immigrants themselves are the equivalent of cannon fodder, though in this case that suits them fine.
The western democratic welfare state and modern transportation technology has made it susceptible to political competition based on moving voters who will need to be aligned with particular politics into political districts. Immigration to the west is a modern form of gerrymandering.
This gerrymandering by moving voters into a district is not really a war; it’s really terribly mundane. If it was a real war it would receive lots of attention. But incremental gerrymandering? Who ever got concerned over that? Who even pays attention to that? It’s not news. The eyes glaze over.
Of course, getting elected, staying in office, and staying in power should be important things, but sometimes it’s helpful to those involved if things are kept out of the news. My experience has been to encounter a surprising number of Swedes in silicon valley. Numerically I expect they are punching above their weight. They are often in product management, field sales, technical product management, that sort of thing, and they do well. They are not as desperate as the Indians, but they still want out.

I think that it's ridiculous that grown men take interest in children's games. I know so many adult men who are obsessed with a bunch of guys who get paid to throw around a ball. Some of my coworkers spend their lunch break looking up the stats of high school players who are looking to commit university sports programs. It's just bizarre. Most men at my workplace (most of whom are college-educate) don't even understand the basics of America's immigration or trade policies, but they can offer a thorough discussion of the West Coast offense.
I think that a lot of American men lack masculinity in their own lives, so they live vicariously through athletes. If they're younger, they also live vicariously through entertainers and celebrities. Americans have always been sports oriented, but these days sports enthusiasm is just so over the top.
On the other hand, I personally watch a lot of football. So maybe I'm no better........

A bunch of middle-age overweight white guys fawn over some muscular 20-something black guy because he can catch a ball. At the same time, they remain generally apathetic about the economic and culture degeneration of their country. It's really strange when you think about it.Replies: @Brutusale
Too true. A corollary is the strength of an overweight middle-aged guy’s opinion about a sport is a direct inverse of his having actually played said sport.
The Hashemites of Jordan are a notable exception as they have a strong martial tradition, with scions spending time being treated like the cherries they are before they're even allowed to think of leading anyone. My understanding is that this only intensified after the Arab-Israel wars, and why their king basically went and got a flight suit before leading a bombing raid on IS last year. It also helps explain why IS hasn't had too much success in stirring up shit in Jordan despite a favorable environment - lots of steel in those forces.

The Jordanian monarchy seems to practice noblesse oblige, which makes up quite a bit for its lack of being a real country.
