Commenter candid_observer writes:

candid_observer says: November 15, 2017 Why would so many of the nationally publicized “hate crimes” turn out to be fake? Precisely because they are so over-the-top that they come to national attention.

A lot of actual hate crimes are just kind of boring and depressing: e.g., a kid in juvenile hall carves an anti-gay slur in the effeminate kid’s bunk.

They are typically in universities, or other “esteemed” institutions, where they would seem a priori to be especially against the culture and outrageous.

A lot of celebrated “hate crimes” turn out to be like celebrated conspiracy theories. I’m always pointing out that a lot of major events in history were the results of conspiracies — e.g., the assassinations of Julius Caesar, Abraham Lincoln, and the archduke Franz Ferdinand. On the other hand, the conspiracy theories that appeal to conspiracy theorists tend to be stupid. Similarly, the “hate crimes” that attract national attention, like the Air Force Academy one, so often tend to be stupid.

They also typically use exactly the sort of language and provocation which racists are, supposedly, wont to use, in the minds of the left. They are, therefore, perfect for The Agenda.

But of course it’s all a figment of the fevered imaginations of the left — a figment faithfully followed by the hoaxers. One can almost always tell in advance if a “hate crime” is a hoax by the perfection of its construction. It will use exactly the words The Narrative demands, and will involve exactly the actions The Narrative expects (“He ripped off my hijab!!”). Hate hoaxers lack the brains for subtlety.

Another reason that national publicized incidents of often turn out to be be fiascos is because the cops / prosecutors on the spot decide that, no, this wasn’t a hate crime and then the national media roars in hoping to win a Pulitzer for exposing the vast Conspiracy of Hate that keeps, say, the Sanford, FL police department from incarcerating obvious Aryan Nation member George Zimmerman (to cite an example).

There, the hoax was largely that the press refused to connect the dots and explain, “Uh, we got this story really, really wrong. We were wrong about George Zimmerman being white. We were wrong about Trayvon Martin being a tiny angelic child. We were wrong to not mention for several months that Zimmerman was covered in blood. We were wrong to not mention that it was a would-be gay-bashing. Why did we get so much so wrong? We just wanted a Great White Defendant so bad we could taste it.”

  1. “…a would-be gay-bashing.”

Is that right? I recall the fat chick Trayvon was on the phone with testified that Trayvon thought Zimmerman was going to rape him, but I just thought that was bullshit. Was there anything else that pointed in that direction?

It depends. Did Trayvon call Zimmerman a " creepy ass-cracker?" Or did he call him a "creepy-ass cracker?"

They have created a system of “credentialism” that wastes years of young people’s lives — except of course for the young people who cannot hack it at all and are therefore excluded from middle-class society. They have wrecked our financial system, stripped the dollar of more than ninety-five percent of its value in the last hundred years, and killed hundreds of thousands of Americans (and millions of foreigners) in “wars of choice.”

If the NAM underclass and the productive people among the mainstream middle class ever get together and realize what has been done to them by the ruling elite, the elite is doomed.

The well-honed solution is: divide and conquer. Convince the underclass that they are oppressed not by the ruling elite but by white frat boys or working-class cops or by ordinary middle-class Americans.

Distract ordinary middle-class Americans by tearing down statues that no one ever cared about five years ago or by encouraging over-paid, immature celebrities playing children’s games (dangerously violent children’s games, to be sure!) to engage in pointless protests. Oh, yes, convince ordinary Americans that they are more in danger from underclass thugs than from the criminal activities of the elite.

The sad thing is that a lot of people who think they are benefiting from these scams — people who falsely view themselves as junior members of the elite or at least elite wannabees — are being hurt as badly as the rest of us.

But it all works very nicely for the elite. And, it will keep working as long as most Americans blame somebody — the NAMs or immigrants or the Russians or the cops or just white Americans in general — instead of collectively turning our ire on the elite.

This can go on for a long time. But, perhaps, not forever.

Yep, I've come to this conclusion myself, too. The "meritocrats" have created a self-reinforcing structure to justify their rule. In the end, elite propaganda will look like divine right of kings. May we all live to see it.

"Convince ordinary Americans that they are more in danger from underclass thugs than from the criminal activities of the elite"? Especially since the 1060's, the governing-classes and ruling-elites have suppressed the horrific realities of black criminality, especially black-on-white violence. Over 95% of whites know nothing about the Wichita massacre or the knoxville horror and myriads of other heinous atrocities that blacks have committed against whites over the last 50-60 years and are ignorant of the statistical realities of pandemic negro criminality.

What "criminal activities," exactly, as opposed to legal if malign policies such as open borders and massive non-white immigration and ignoring and concealing the truth about negro violence and criminality, especially against whites.

Indeed, but most middle-class Americans do not live in such ZIP codes.

Part of the issue here is no doubt the vividness of being shot by a mugger vs. the less vivid picture of a life that wastes away because the elite have made it difficult for people to live fulfilling lives.

How many white males were murdered in the last couple years by members of the underclass vs. how many white males committed suicide, died because of substance abuse, etc.?

"If it bleeds, it leads." We pay more attention to a hundred people who die in an airplane crash than a couple thousand people who die in the same month in auto crashes.

The ruling elite certainly grasps the parameters of propaganda!

But, in terms of the effect on the lives of ordinary middle-class Americans, which is, in simple numerical terms, really more devastating -- lower-class violence or the destruction of our society by the elite?

I agree about the fulfilling lives part. In fact I think a lot of the racial tension in American society would dissipate if anyone who worked hard and played by the rules stood a decent chance to lead a rich and fulfilling life.

As for what a rich and fulfilling life might look like for average human beings—as opposed to the talented few, for whom equality of opportunity is the be all and end all—I spell out one possibility in my new book: https://goo.gl/q4kodC

Check out the Gallup poll results to see how many people might like to live this way.

Wasn’t it worse than just getting a story wrong? The press not only left out relevant facts, they actively doctored the 911 call recording, falsely and deliberately casting Zimmerman as a Racist™ even as they knew how incendiary this would and did make the incident.

In this, as in the Rodney King riots, members of the press should have been facing criminal charges for their obviously criminal acts in inciting riots, which is a crime in every state and the racial aspect makes it federal as well. But so far, the politicians are afraid to take on the Media Industrial Complex.

    • Replies: @Loveofknowledge
    @Almost Missouri

The whole time the Ferguson Michael Brown hoax was going on, I was asking myself, why are they doing this? Are they TRYING to start a riot?

If the media gets everybody convinced that this was a case of an innocent black kid murdered by a racist white cop... well then people are going to expect an arrest, trial, and conviction of the cop.

When that doesn't happen, people will be angry and think the system is racist. And nobody will know that the real reason the cop can't possibly be charged with anything is because the black kid was actually the perpetrator and not the victim, as the witness testimony and physical evidence makes clear.

Criminal charges against the media for inciting riots? They certainly would deserve it, whether that's really possible legally I don't know. But it would have been a start if anyone had even called them out on it verbally! President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder totally went along with the hoax, but I don't even remember any Republicans making any forceful denunciations of the whole thing.

The Michael Brown hoax was actually a major factor in me ultimately voting for Trump. If Trump had been president at the time, it could never have happened like that. He would have destroyed it with one tweet about the lying press, fake news, etc. - maybe with a link to the Justice Department report (which if you haven't read it, really lays out how unambiguous that case truly was; the evidence overwhelmingly backs Officer Darren Wilson's version of events).

That story went on for months and made me feel like the little kid in the story of the Emperor's New Clothes, even around my own family and peers. When everybody gets their news from mainstream sources, everybody believes these narratives, and they think I'm the one that's crazy.

It's not like I had to dig that deep either, the truth about that case was reported in mainstream sources like the L.A. Times and Washington Post, which I found from Drudge Report direct links.

That's part of how media bias works I realize, they actually do report the facts, they just create a misleading impression if you don't read carefully and already have a degree of skepticism. I know Steve has talked about that a lot.

I have to wonder though, is there any hope for ever having an honest media? What's it going to take, and what's the strategy? I appreciate that there are commentators like Steve who point out the lies, but nothing ever seems to change.

There should have been all sorts of self-criticism in the media about how they screwed up the Michael Brown story so badly. There should have been presentations and panel discussions about it at conferences that journalists go to or whatever. There should have been public acknowledgements of it and vows to regain the public trust and restore integrity in the business. As far as I know, nothing of the sort has happened.

  13. One man’s three-dimensional chess is another’s “conspiracy theory.”

  14. Steve’s concluding paragraph nails it. The American Left (certainly if you understand that it is born partly of the WASP common man right of the Know-Nothing types who hated most non-WASP whites with a deep passion), has always been about finding the Great White Defendant. The WASP abolitionist movement and then the Emancipation Proclamation made the American Left, and the imperially minded WASP right, agree that uplifting the negro by the battering of the ‘lesser’ whites was not only the wisest policy for holding power; it also was MORAL.

What the Hate Crime Hoaxes should lead all of us to realize, and then emphasize, is that there are virtually Zero truly deserving civil rights heroes. They are also Hoaxes, chosen by the American press and academics and bleeding heart Mainline Protestant, and then Jewish, rich to be icons.

If Martin Luther King had been a white man, of any ethnicity or denomination, and had been as deeply involved with casual sex as King was, often with teens, as King was, raising and spending fortunes under the table, as King did, while bleating about the poor he was helping, our media today would have him raised up as an example of the evil white man who talks Jesus and lives like a beast.

  18. Hey iSteve, maybe microaggressions are not punished macro severely, so micro victims need to create hoaxes to get a macro response to their micro complaints. There may be a threshold value that must be exceeded before an aggression is macro enough to elicit a macro response, therefore the need for a hoax in the absence of a macro event. Hoaxes are produced because of the desire to obtain a linear justice response from a justice system designed with a step function response.

This all ties into the new fascination with AI as each neuron has a threshold value that must be exceeded before its output switches from a micro 0 to a macro 1. It is all trey modern you see. I think rotten kids in Chandler AZ could do the world a favor by pranking (hoaxing) Waymo cars so the AI is trained to be irrational like the airforce academy. Or perhaps the airforce academy needs to add more neurons to their neural network to better approximate a linear response.

  19. Why Are So Many Famous Hate Crimes Actually Hate Hoaxes?

Same reason the Soviet Union held show trials. Once all of the actual capitalists had been liquidated, in order to keep up the propaganda narrative that capitalist subversion was everywhere and the Party needed to take extreme measures to protect the proletariat, it began inventing Enemies of the People.

Same thing here. All the actual “racists” have been purged from elite society for the last fifty years, and unconstitutional Federal “civil rights” policies giving minorities preferential treatment have already been implemented. One could reasonably assume that these measures are no longer necessary, so the hoaxes must be perpetrated to justify the meme of the “oppressed minority” and continued expansion of anti-white government power.

    • Agree: SMK
  20. Asserting one’s belief in increasingly absurd hate hoaxes is like asserting that Roy Moore never went after teenaged girls: the point is to demonstrate group loyalty, not fact. I think Scott Alexander wrote about this a year or two ago with respect to Black Lives Matter.

  21. To paraphrase Erik Hoffer, people can accept that there is no God, but the will never accept that there is no devil. I suspect that many of the people perpetrating these hoaxes are mentally unstable people, like the Virginia coed of Rollingstone fame. They just want attention.

But, the reason the Progs are so willing to embrace these things is they have no choice. The jarring lack of Nazis and Klansmen invalidates what it means to be a Progressive today.

At the Mencken event, I ran into a loonie woman who swore she saw fliers for the event featuring Adolph Hitler. Even when I pointed out that the organizer was Jewish and most of the participants were Jews, she still insisted she saw the flier.

It is a point I’m fond of making. You cannot talk people out of mental illness. There’s no reasoning with Progressives.

They have wrecked our financial system, stripped the dollar of more than ninety-five percent of its value in the last hundred years, and killed hundreds of thousands of Americans (and millions of foreigners) in "wars of choice."

Distract ordinary middle-class Americans by tearing down statues that no one ever cared about five years ago or by encouraging over-paid, immature celebrities playing children's games (dangerously violent children's games, to be sure!) to engage in pointless protests. Oh, yes, convince ordinary Americans that they are more in danger from underclass thugs than from the criminal activities of the elite.

The sad thing is that a lot of people who think they are benefiting from these scams -- people who falsely view themselves as junior members of the elite or at least elite wannabees -- are being hurt as badly as the rest of us.

But it all works very nicely for the elite. And, it will keep working as long as most Americans blame somebody -- the NAMs or immigrants or the Russians or the cops or just white Americans in general -- instead of collectively turning our ire on the elite.

This can go on for a long time. But, perhaps, not forever.

Yep, I’ve come to this conclusion myself, too. The “meritocrats” have created a self-reinforcing structure to justify their rule. In the end, elite propaganda will look like divine right of kings. May we all live to see it.

Sort of amusing that he chose to wear surgical gloves.

  25. It’s also because they’re “fake but true.”

    Take three examples.

    1. A legit townie Nazi sprays swatikas on the Jewish temple and ni66er on the African-American student center.

    2. The rabbi puts swastikas on the temple and a black student writes ni66er on the student center.

    3. A white student looking to troll the community does it.

In all three cases, the response from the community is exactly the same. If hate crimes were a real thing, like assault, then the motivation is irrelevant. All the perps should receive the same sentence because it was exactly the same crime. In a sane world the hoaxers would get more time because they committed a hate crime against everyone by targeting specific groups and then the blame fell on a separate innocent group.

In reality, in cases 1 and 3 the perp is prosecuted for doing a hate crime. Hence, almost no one ever actually does something like this, or as Steve said, it’s something that isn’t worth covering.

In case 2, the rabbi and student are almost never prosecuted. They may not be shunned, they may even elevate their social status.

If there is little to no punishment (as long you don’t involve police with a separate crime report, as in the U of Albany incident) and the community wants these events for a 5 minutes of hate/kumbaya session, it’s not surprising they are usually manufactured.

  26. A lot of actual hate crimes are just kind of boring and depressing: e.g., a kid in juvenile hall carves an anti-gay slur in the effeminate kid’s bunk.

Haha, you’re crackin’ me up today, Steve.

  27. On the other hand, the conspiracy theories that appeal to conspiracy theorists tend to be stupid.

What is this supposed to be mean? Conspiracy theories that appeal to conspiracy theorists?

You very good at critiquing a narrow portion of the MSM’s agenda and the misleading (at best) stories that support it, but you often seem naive about MSM coverage of events like terrorist attacks or mass shootings, which frequently are obviously staged.

  28. Anonymous [AKA "Lynyrd"] says:

Hate crime hoaxes need a hidden support mechanism so as to successfully wave the fake bloody shirt in public. If a real one isn’t available then one has to be manufactured. The conning of the American public goes way back to the days of the Scottsboro Boys. Two women encounter a roving gang of blacks at night in an isolated area and decide to have consensual sex with all of them but then later falsely accuse the poor boys of rape. Sure, just like I run into a gang of blacks in a dark alley and spontaneously decide to share the contents of my wallet with them. All voluntary, believe it. The women were no good anyway so forget about it. The Scottsboro Boys case was exploited by the communist party back then. People forget that back then the communist party had many members and plenty of money to spend. They’ve been able to turn it into an American race legend. Then of course there’s Saint Emmett Till.

We were wrong about Trayvon Martin being a tiny angelic child. We were wrong to not mention for several months that Zimmerman was covered in blood. We were wrong to not mention that it was a would-be gay-bashing. Why did we get so much so wrong?

Wasn't it worse than just getting a story wrong? The press not only left out relevant facts, they actively doctored the 911 call recording, falsely and deliberately casting Zimmerman as a Racist™ even as they knew how incendiary this would and did make the incident.

In this, as in the Rodney King riots, members of the press should have been facing criminal charges for their obviously criminal acts in inciting riots, which is a crime in every state and the racial aspect makes it federal as well. But so far, the politicians are afraid to take on the Media Industrial Complex.

    Replies: @Loveofknowledge

The whole time the Ferguson Michael Brown hoax was going on, I was asking myself, why are they doing this? Are they TRYING to start a riot?

If the media gets everybody convinced that this was a case of an innocent black kid murdered by a racist white cop… well then people are going to expect an arrest, trial, and conviction of the cop.

When that doesn’t happen, people will be angry and think the system is racist. And nobody will know that the real reason the cop can’t possibly be charged with anything is because the black kid was actually the perpetrator and not the victim, as the witness testimony and physical evidence makes clear.

Criminal charges against the media for inciting riots? They certainly would deserve it, whether that’s really possible legally I don’t know. But it would have been a start if anyone had even called them out on it verbally! President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder totally went along with the hoax, but I don’t even remember any Republicans making any forceful denunciations of the whole thing.

The Michael Brown hoax was actually a major factor in me ultimately voting for Trump. If Trump had been president at the time, it could never have happened like that. He would have destroyed it with one tweet about the lying press, fake news, etc. – maybe with a link to the Justice Department report (which if you haven’t read it, really lays out how unambiguous that case truly was; the evidence overwhelmingly backs Officer Darren Wilson’s version of events).

That story went on for months and made me feel like the little kid in the story of the Emperor’s New Clothes, even around my own family and peers. When everybody gets their news from mainstream sources, everybody believes these narratives, and they think I’m the one that’s crazy.

It’s not like I had to dig that deep either, the truth about that case was reported in mainstream sources like the L.A. Times and Washington Post, which I found from Drudge Report direct links.

That’s part of how media bias works I realize, they actually do report the facts, they just create a misleading impression if you don’t read carefully and already have a degree of skepticism. I know Steve has talked about that a lot.

I have to wonder though, is there any hope for ever having an honest media? What’s it going to take, and what’s the strategy? I appreciate that there are commentators like Steve who point out the lies, but nothing ever seems to change.

There should have been all sorts of self-criticism in the media about how they screwed up the Michael Brown story so badly. There should have been presentations and panel discussions about it at conferences that journalists go to or whatever. There should have been public acknowledgements of it and vows to regain the public trust and restore integrity in the business. As far as I know, nothing of the sort has happened.
