ABC Chicago’s 10pm sports anchor Mark Giangreco has long been known as one of the best in the country at his highly competitive job. Nightly local news comes on at 10pm in the Central Time Zone, before most people have gone to bed, rather than at the somnolent 11pm on the coasts. So sportscasters are huge stars in places like Chicago. And Giangreco was perhaps the top local talent of his generation.

But he appears to be out of his job after having a bit of fun at the expense of an apparently black lady news anchor on his show. From RobertFeder.com:

Now it can be told: Veteran Chicago sports anchor Mark Giangreco may be on the verge of losing his job at ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7 because he used the word “ditzy” in an on-air comment about news anchor Cheryl Burton.

ABC 7 bosses, Giangreco and his agent continue to stonewall on his unexplained absence for the last five weeks, but multiple sources confirmed Wednesday he’s under fire for a remark at the end of his sports segment January 28.

A recording of the 10 p.m. newscast that night showed Giangreco wrapping up a story about Canadian hockey star Spencer Jenkin painting his house while on roller skates and saying: “Gotta get him a show on DIY Network. We’ll call it ‘House Fix with Sticks,’ and Cheryl can play the ditzy, combative interior decorator. I got it all worked out.”

Sources said Burton complained to management about Giangreco’s comment, resulting in his suspension. Talks are said to be under way that could lead to his termination after 27 years as the station’s top sports anchor. Giangreco has 18 months left on his contract.

Ironically, Giangreco was hired by WLS on a $5 million five year contract in 1994 when sports anchor Tim Weigel was forced out after also having a laugh at his black lady news anchor’s expense.

In a move that stuns his colleagues and angers his fans, an immensely popular sportscaster suddenly finds himself out of a job at Chicago’s top-rated television station.

Named in multiple viewer surveys as “Chicago’s best sports anchor,” he still has more than a year left on his contract when ABC-owned WLS-Channel 7 shoves him out the door without so much as a word of thanks.

“I will dedicate the rest of my career to making them regret that decision,” Tim Weigel declares on his way out.

It was front page news in December 1994 when ABC 7 fired Weigel, a hometown superstar, after a 17-year run as sports anchor (interrupted by a brief experiment as a news anchor).

In a raid that caught nearly everyone by surprise, station boss Joe Ahern lured a younger rising star from rival WMAQ-Channel 5 with a five-year, $5 million guaranteed contract the NBC-owned station couldn’t come close to matching.

That’s how Mark Giangreco landed at “Eyewitness News” 27 years ago.

Weigel’s black anchor lady had the misfortune to ask a dumb question of Bears coach Mike Ditka, who made a funny reply. Weigel included the clip in his wrap-up of funny incidents. Her amour propre was wounded, and Weigel was out the door (perhaps because Giangreco was available).

So this pattern of white guys getting canceled over black women being unable to take a joke has been going on a long time.

  1. It’s a small thing (actually, nit really) but you refer to these negro hags as “woman” and, in the title, “lady”. But the wronged White men are both “white guys”.

  2. White guys: one mistake, and you are out.

Black “ladies”: mistakes are celebrated and are a reason for promotion.

The future will have had already arrived in the past. Dr Dan Streetmentioner might be needed for the proper tense.

Culminating with the first woman ever elected on a ticket for President/Vice President in US history.

She got down on her knees and worked hard to get to this point surpassing Madame Clinton, and with strong odds to soon be the top Puppet of the US.

Side note: Wikipedia today is honoring international women's day with an icon that has a female symbol, cross below circle, on a lavender background, with the motto "MIND THE GAP". Whoops. A phrase that was used in all its glory by thechive(dot)com in a series "honoring" women.

  4. It’s actually a rather complicated sequence of events that was triggered by the ditzy comment. To wit:
    Ditzy brings to mind blonde.
    Blonde brings to mind hair.
Any reference to hair is automatically a reference to Gorilla Glue.
It is wrong to refer to negresses as gorillas. No, wait! Although it is technically correct to refer to negresses as gorillas because factual, it is not allowed because facts are racist.

  5. At least he didn’t touch her hair on the air. That could’ve led to a major lawsuit.

More evidence of this black high self esteem I’m always hearing about. Unless of course, this negro broad (a fair descriptor if MG is merely a white guy) was just waiting for any opportunity to get Giangreco fired, because she’s an envious, nasty, anti-white dirtbag (with high self esteem.)

  11. While we are talking about Blacks at iSteve (LOL) and the NFL, this man should be president-for-life:

  12. And Giangreco was perhaps the top local talent of his generation.

How difficult is it to be a local sports anchor? Play-by-play announcing is at least a challenge: you have to think in near real-time and talk without stumbling. But reading pre-written copy? C’mon man. There’s fifty-thousand sports fans who could walk into that job tomorrow.

Anyway expect a whole rash of this stuff for Women’s History Month, especially with #metoo getting dusted off here in NY. 21. Ah Chicago, where broadcasting is so environmentally correct, they recycle on air hosts and their careers for decades.

I see Mr. Giangreco is a spry 68 years of age. How much of this is a “lady” taking offense and a station looking to offload older talent? I notice at Mr. Feder’s site Janet Davies, a longtime co-host of Chicago New Years Eve broadcasts with Mr. Giangreco, was also given ye olde heave ho from ABC-7 last month. Doing the math on Ms. Davies career someone who has spent 37 years at one spot after an earlier career in broadcasting is probably in their sixties as well.

And speaking of the Weigels, Tim’s son Rafer got involved in his own #MeToo moment within the last two years:

    https://www.robertfeder.com/2020/01/27/rafer-weigel-fox-32-let-go/

“Weigel, 50, had been on unpaid suspension as anchor of “Good Day Chicago” since October when three-way allegations of harassment and revenge porn surfaced involving a woman from Valparaiso, Indiana, with whom he was having an affair, and a former fiancee.

Although a Northwest Indiana court earlier this month dismissed the Valparaiso woman’s revenge-porn case for lack of evidence, the damage to Weigel’s reputation was done. He was never charged with a crime.

Fox 32 declined to comment on the matter or disclose its plans to replace Weigel on the newscast he co-anchored from 4 to 6 a.m. weekdays with Roseanne Tellez. But insiders confirmed that he’s out.”

Ah for the days of Chet Coppock, aka “Chet Chitchat” on the sports news of the day in Chicago. Sadly Chet has joined the heavenly press box, and God walks in heaven thinking he’s Chet Coppock.

In real life Cheryl is 58. Maybe black don't crack but 58 is past most women's (and for that matter men's) sell-by date so you might have to resort to a few tricks to make the merchandise salable.

There’s more empathy for non-conservatives like Bari Weiss or Jordan Peterson who make fairly courageous stands (sometimes risking livelihoods) as a matter of principle.

Ah, wow. I live in the Chicago burbs and hadn’t heard of this.

Giancreco’s career was well timed with the ascension of the Bulls MJ dynasty in the 90s. I remember him as a quick wit, and the humorlessness of his fellow on-air personalities at channel 7 were usually his targets.

Ah Chicago, where broadcasting is so environmentally correct, they recycle on air hosts and their careers for decades.

I see Mr. Giangreco is a spry 68 years of age. How much of this is a "lady" taking offense and a station looking to offload older talent? I notice at Mr. Feder's site Janet Davies, a longtime co-host of Chicago New Years Eve broadcasts with Mr. Giangreco, was also given ye olde heave ho from ABC-7 last month. Doing the math on Ms. Davies career someone who has spent 37 years at one spot after an earlier career in broadcasting is probably in their sixties as well.

And speaking of the Weigels, Tim's son Rafer got involved in his own #MeToo moment within the last two years:

    https://www.robertfeder.com/2020/01/27/rafer-weigel-fox-32-let-go/

"Weigel, 50, had been on unpaid suspension as anchor of “Good Day Chicago” since October when three-way allegations of harassment and revenge porn surfaced involving a woman from Valparaiso, Indiana, with whom he was having an affair, and a former fiancee.

But insiders confirmed that he’s out."
