It’s hard to remember all the media manias that have come and gone in attempts to derail the Trump candidacy. For example, the Great Six-Pointed Star Crisis of early July 2016 is already largely forgotten.
It’s hard to remember now after so much leftist violence, but one of the biggest coordinated press campaigns back in the late winter was the idea that Trump rallies were loci of “violence.” Thus, when there was mob violence at a Trump rally in Chicago in March, it was widely blamed initially by the press and politicians on Trump and his violent supporters. Of course, that was 180 degrees backward.
So how did Trump’s convention in Cleveland turn out? Did Trump’s cossacks sack Shaker Heights? Or did that not actually go through the formality of taking place?

I honestly expected some violence at the convention. I thought BLM and some coalition of illegal aliens would try to go after the convention attendees. The only implicit attempt at the violence narrative I recall was that Cruz’s wife had to be hustled out of the convention for her own safety. Apparently they (the media) were worried that the rage engorged Trumpbots would attack her.
BLM was conspicuously absent. Maybe Obama told them to cool it or they are going to blow the whole thing.

Once in awhile, you’ll still see an article on Huffington Post or something similar about how Trump constantly incites violence. I think most places dropped that eventually, because it would be too obvious that, for a guy who supposedly incites violence, his supporters never did much more than punch a few people. Whereas, Democrats supposedly weren’t inciting violence, but their supporters rioted, chased people, threw things at them, and even tried shooting Trump.
Which would lead some people to wonder if maybe Democratic voters were just more inherently violent, if they thought about it.
I suspect Trump supporters’ willingness to defend themselves is the reason the Left didn’t try violence in Cleveland.

Trump’s supporters tend to be tough looking, blue collar white men. Lots of bikers, truckers, cops, firefighters, and ex-military types. They’re ready for violence and capable of winning fights, but they’re not really anarchic or lawless. They’re sort of like guards, not rioters.
Up until the 90s, there were lots of urban working class neighborhoods full of these types. Their neighborhoods tended to be relatively safe and minorities were often too scared to move in.
Lots of them used to be hardhat Democrats. Since the mid 90s, they’ve been economically and racially marginalized by both parties. Trump seems to really appeal to them.
They’ve never been much into racial guilt or acting deferential to minorities. They’ve beat up some rowdy black protesters who tried to disrupt Trump rallies.

The Trump supporters did something much worse than engaging in physical violence. They engaged in the psychological violence of inaction, failing to give their privileged white lives for black ones, failing to empathize with the suffering of trans-women whose barren non-wombs cannot give forth fruit, failing to…oh, something like that. I can’t keep up with all the anti-conservative stuff. Projecting the ignorance, racism and violence of Hillary and Bernie’s supporters onto Trump’s peaceful supporters is just another form of caucasophobia. It’s a way to implicitly bash whites and warn them that they are not to unite or start thinking they can take their country back from the occupying elite.

Violence is more characteristic of the Left and of Islam. The Right as a rule just wants safe neighborhoods. The Left bases its philosophical doctrines on non rationalist paradigms. Thus, like Islam, they have no means of taking power except by violence. Rational argument does not work for them.
I was going to post about the good job the authorities were doing in Cleveland. Funny how you don’t notice peaceful, civil behavior. Apparently the idea was to keep the demonstrators separated by a good distance from the arena which was the site of the Convention. There were reportedly some demonstrators, but the plan seemed to work. Maybe they are saving their violence for Philadelphia. The funny thing is that Fox News showed the front line Cleveland cops who were primarily responsible for maintaining order, and all 5 to 7 were white. They looked like guys I wouldn’t want to tangle with. Then Fox thought it necessary to show the backups from the Ohio state police, and you saw a few blacks. Only when they showed the supplementary forces that came from out of state (can’t recall the state, but North Carolina comes to mind) did you see a significant number of black cops. They are looked like big, muscular guys you wouldn’t want to fool around with. They all looked like no nonsense guys perfectly happy to hit a misbehaving demonstrator with a heavy baton. They all deserve an accolade for a job well done. Sure beats Chicago in March or San Jose in April, when the rioters were allowed to run free and disrupt the proceedings.
The Trump-violence meme is projection. Only the Left is violent. The Left has been rioting, disturbing the peace, engaging in vandalism and physical attacks, and making assassination threats for decades.

I thought the most effective part of the speech was when po-faced Medea Benjamin was very gently prevented from unfurling her banner. The media have been trying to convince people that Trump was going around tasing everyone who wasn’t wearing a Trump hat and then hurling their limp bodies into a pit filled with starving polar bears. And maybe he did get a little ornery with some of them. But now when people think of a protestor at a Trump rally, they’ll think of Ms. Code Pink getting repeatedly head-faked by a black Cleveland cop.
Thinking about this, it occurs to me, that Mr Sailer is really onto something when he calls upon whomever is smart enough to take advantage of it to “brand” the Donks as the “Black Party”.
Recent events have made such a strategy even more advantageous. One would imagine that a good marketer would be able to hang a “BLM Party” label on the Dems, which might not only bring in Asian and Latin voters, but enough Black votes to make this a blowout election for Trump.

Ghost, I read the Cleveland Plains Dealer on line, and there was a rally, Black Unity, that included Cornel West and one of the leaders of the New Black Panthers, Malik Shabazz(?). Anyhow it was a complete bust fewer, than one hundred attended, but the photos surely showed way less than that number. West lamented the fact that “a million” people showed up for the Cavaliers championship parade and they couldn’t get “thousands” for their rally. BLM is spreading itself pretty thin, with protest across the country, Toronto and London.
At least Code Pink was there to try and disrupt things. I cannot tell you what they were protesting about but I do know they are upset.

Keep in mind the 1968 convention you reference was the democrat convention. So this is not exactly an apples to apples comparison.
But I think you are correct in that the democrats realize that more unrest, even at the GOP convention in Cleveland, would put the democrats in a negative light. Up until the 90s, there were lots of urban working class neighborhoods full of these types. Their neighborhoods tended to be relatively safe and minorities were often too scared to move in.
Lots of them used to be hardhat Democrats. Since the mid 90s, they've been economically and racially marginalized by both parties. Trump seems to really appeal to them.
They've never been much into racial guilt or acting deferential to minorities. They've beat up some rowdy black protesters who tried to disrupt Trump rallies.
