How one woman fought to get her husband tested while her state was applauded for having no coronavirus

(CNN)Carolyn Vigil was lying in bed next to her husband when she first saw the meme. It noted West Virginia had no reported cases of coronavirus, and jokingly pleaded for its people to hang on.
She remembers it so well because it’s the day her husband James began to feel sick in their Shepherdstown home in the West Virginia panhandle.
Her husband was sick from Covid-19. But her “coronavirus-free” state wasn’t set up to test him.
He would become the state’s Patient #1. They didn’t know it then, of course, nor did anyone else. But in the following days they felt like that they were the only people in the state who wanted to find out. From medical professionals who simply had no information to health administrators in the same boat, all the way up to the President saying the state was doing a good job for having no cases.
And all the while, Patient #1 — James Vigil — was there for the testing.
So where did they go skiing?
Welcome to reality, which doesn’t go away when you close your eyes, turn your back, or insist on the validity of your personal opinion. Few will be spared as this accelerates.
So… what are we gonna call this one? Ski-o-caust? Lodge-o-caust? Hmmmm. Slope-o-caust?

As I’ve said, unlike most large-scale diseases, which are spread by lower class bad hygiene, this is spread by rootless cosmopolitan types.
The good people of West Virginia now need to be lectured by media to avoid backlash against skiers.
They need to be told to ask themselves, “What did we do to cause this skier to bring Corona-chan to our state and infect us?” They should be admonished and reminded to be sensitive to the needs of the oppressed skier. If the real number of cases was 300,000, you’d see much higher numbers of critical cases and much higher numbers of deaths. You’re not seeing that.
I’m rather curious about Wuhan’s status. They’re shutting down temporary hospitals and seem to be relaxing quarantine, but presumably they still have people getting the disease. My guess is that once the most vulnerable people died in the initial wave, the people getting it now are more resistant, and are less likely to need the hospital. They may be recovering with just normal home bed rest. Either that, or a more deadly version of Covid-19 has pretty much died out in Wuhan, leaving a less-deadly version of the virus to dominate. You would think China’s leadership would be paranoid about Covid-19 spreading to their other cities. It’s possible that the other cities are lagging behind enough they’re more in the situation the US is in right now, not really hit hard yet.

I don’t know what “days” you are referring to here. It is my understanding however that testing was indeed employed selectively in earlier days in context tracing efforts.A positive test in general has no influence on treatment decisions. For the mildly ill, the treatment is the same: rest at home. For the critically ill, testing may be more valuable but the treatment of those symptoms will also likely be unchanged by test results.It’s a unnecessary burden on the healthcare system, one we are told is already overburdened. It occupies the time of providers. It occupies space. It increased demand for supplies, for the very PPE you mention, which we are now told is in short supply.
It also brings infectious people, who should be self isolating, out into the general public, raising the risk of spread. And it brings healthy people who want tests into closet contact with people who may be contagious.

Shepherdstown is on the eastern extremity of West Virginia and has a small corps of people who commute to DC and it’s immediate suburbs. The county it’s in has had vigorous population growth for several decades – in a state whose population has been more-or-less fixed for 80 years.
Shepherdstown is one of two counties - Jefferson and Berkeley - that actually were part of a lawsuit after the Civil War to determine if they should belong to Virginia instead. West Virginia won that lawsuit, but in my opinion Jefferson and Berkeley counties have far less in common with the rest of the Mountain State than anything to their southwest.

I can’t believe we’re not seeing more questions along these lines. Is this same thing happening with the flu every year? With the common cold? New strains pop up in one part of the world and thanks to the business travelers / skiers / cruisers it covers the world? By summer time, the viruses burn themselves out, and then each winter we start over again? I’d find it hard to believe this is the first time a disease has spread this way.

This couple lives in the state. There are one or two ski resorts in the state. One of the two, or the only one, as the case may be, is the southernmost American ski resort east of the Mississippi. They don’t seem to be stereotypical mountaineers, but neither do they seem to be stereotypical rich skiers.
The salient characteristics of the disease are that it is horrible for the vulnerable, and that it is mild or even not noticeable for the young and healthy. Thus it is not unlikely that there is a mortality rate not that much higher than that for other respiratory illnesses coupled with a high number of total cases.

It’s rare and hard to catch and much more expensive than pork or chicken. 99% of the people in China have never eaten an owl or a bat, which is a good thing because if more did then owls (bats, etc.) would be extinct.
