From the Washington Post news section:
By Terrence McCoy and Heloísa Traiano
November 15, 2020 at 12:23 p.m. PSTRIO DE JANEIRO — For most of his 57 years, to the extent that he thought about his race, José Antônio Gomes used the language he was raised with. He was “pardo” — biracial — which was how his parents identified themselves. Or maybe “moreno,” as people back in his hometown called him. Perhaps “mestiço,” a blend of ethnicities.
It wasn’t until this year, when protests for racial justice erupted across the United States after George Floyd’s killing in police custody, that Gomes’s own uncertainty settled. Watching television, he saw himself in the thousands of people of color protesting amid the racially diverse crowds. He saw himself in Floyd.
Gomes realized he wasn’t mixed. He was Black.
So in September, when he announced his candidacy for city council in the southeastern city of Turmalina, Gomes officially identified himself that way. “In reality, I’ve always been Black,” he said. “But I didn’t think I was Black. But now we have more courage to see ourselves that way.”
Brazil is home to more people of African heritage than any country outside Africa. But it is rarely identified as a Black nation, or as closely identifying with any race, really. It has seen itself as simply Brazilian — a tapestry of European, African and Indigenous backgrounds that has defied the more rigid racial categories used elsewhere. Some were darker, others lighter. But almost everyone was a mix.
Now, however, as affirmative action policies diversify Brazilian institutions and the struggle for racial equality in the United States inspires a similar movement here, a growing number of people are redefining themselves. Brazilians who long considered themselves to be White are reexamining their family histories and concluding that they’re pardo. Others who thought of themselves as pardo now say they’re Black.
In Brazil, which still carries the imprint of colonization and slavery, where class and privilege are strongly associated with race, the racial reconfiguration has been striking. Over the past decade, the percentage of Brazilians who consider themselves White has dropped from 48 percent to 43 percent, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, while the number of people who identify as Black or mixed has risen from 51 percent to 56 percent.
“We are clearly seeing more Black people publicly declare themselves as Black, as they would in other countries,” said Kleber Antonio de Oliveira Amancio, a social historian at the Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia. “Racial change is much more fluid here than it is in the United States.”
One of the clearest illustrations of that fluidity — and the growing movement to identify as Black — was the registration process for the 5,500 or so municipal elections held here Sunday. Candidates were required to identify as White, Black, mixed, Indigenous or Asian. And that routine bureaucratic step yielded fairly stunning results.
More than a quarter of the 168,000 candidates who also ran in 2016 have changed their race, according to a Washington Post analysis of election registration data. Nearly 17,000 who said they were White in 2016 are now mixed. Around 6,000 who said they were mixed are now Black. And more than 14,000 who said they were mixed now identify as White.
For some candidates, the jump was even further. Nearly 900 went from White to Black, and nearly 600 went from Black to White.
How to explain it?
Some say they’re simply correcting bureaucratic error: A party official charged with registering candidates saw their picture and recorded their race inaccurately. One woman joked that she’d gotten a lot less sun this year while quarantined and decided to declare herself White. Another candidate told the Brazilian newspaper O Globo that he was Black but was a “fan” of the Indigenous, and so has now joined them. Some believed candidates were taking advantage of a recent court decision that requires parties to dispense campaign funds evenly among racial categories….

Transracialism is the wrong frame here. What’s happening here is that they’re adopting America’s one drop rule.

So what happens when all White people, figuring the rules are for chumps and looking at the radical Biden Admin instituting a White tax call themselves black?
Is the US going to institute DNA tests for Whiteness? Or blackness? You must be this (nnnn) black to avoid the White tax? This much (yyyy) to get reparations? If you are this much (zzzz) White you must pay the White tax?
Really, why can’t every White male call themselves a proud black Lesbian? Given that race and gender are a social construct and Cloward-Piven and all that?
Of course in a sane society the majority white electorate would never vote for politicians that support AA in the first place, rendering my little scheme moot.Replies: @Buffalo Joe
I'm now eligible for every sort of gibsmedat from the government. And I'm last to be laid off in the event of a "reduction in force" layoff at work. AND I'm more likely to get the Coronavirus vaccine first!
Oh, I just remembered I’m mixed race. Hopefully this will protect me and my family from the endless depredations that attend toxic whiteness. Climb on board, guys and gals. Before the next few years are up, America will have its very own version of the Nuremberg Laws, and if you’re still white it won’t be pretty. It’s already not pretty.

Come on, man. Surely you know that use of the n variable is highly insensitive and inappropriate.

You too? I am a black identified gender fluid, sometimes cis-gender male but often trans-gender Lesbian. Especially if I can use a female shower stalls
Black Lives Matter is managing to sow racial discord in Brazil, too.
Racial quotas were already instituted in Brazil, with the result that lily white students qualified for black quotas in medicine studies.
The Left creates discord by spreading misinformation
“to the extent that he thought about his race…[he] used the language he was raised with”
Wait, what? Why did we move from thinking about race to language? Do you mean to the extent he talked about his race? I realize people think in words, but not exclusively. Why are these things written so sloppily.
Somewhat off topic, but do we have numbers for how African the Portuguese in Portugal are? Knowing how black the are could give some hint as to the damage mud sharks are doing to whites. I’m assuming that the half black children of absent black fathers and brave white single mothers end up reproducing in the white gene pool. It would make sense. They don’t have much connection to black culture besides inborn personality tendencies, and if they have IQs of 90 or more, they end up in speaker to animals jobs in corporate diversity.

I would love to see a GWAS for IQ/educational attainment done on West Virginians. Everyone thinks they’ve been brain-drained, but we don’t actually know. Knowing ther genetic potential would help us integrate them into mainstream society when we get off coal. Like if they have the genetics for a 100 average, they can be assimilated more readily than if they have genetics for an average of ninety.

What a farce, a racial farce. Slugs get to rise to the top. At least the US is not alone. José Antônio Gomes is mocha, lighter than Obama.
It leaves out the Japanese. Brazil has the largest population of Japanese-descended in the world outside Japan (in the ’20’s Japan sent more immigrants to Brazil than any other country, except Portugal).
But East Asians don’t exist, so… never mind.
This is from Wikipedia:

The Mamelukes were notoriously the most evil and rapacious of the Brazilian ethnic groups and deserve their name (ask a Guarani).

Everybody thought Ozarks hillbillies were pretty dumb, except Sam Walton, who became the richest man in the world by hiring them in large numbers to run the Walmart corporation.

Michael Hart in his book “Understanding Human History” had a take on what happened to Portugal, i.e. how it went from a small country capable of conquering a large portion of the world’s surface to a complete basket case in a couple of centuries. It was of course, miscegenation with conquered Africans.

If i used the language I was raised with to describe my race, I would be consider as “goddammit”.
That can be fixed. Someone notify the DNC. Sounds like a victim of racism.
Can I get a based check?
Well, the neomarxists descendants of (((portuguese))) slavers are doing a great job of pushing their diversity laws in Hispanoamérica.
If you break up a tangible source of contentment, namely the family, and convince people that justice is not possible in their polis, the only thing you can get is strife. Politicians will identify according to which way their bread is buttered.
But how to explain this case in Mexico.. a white fellow in his fifties, economist, ITAM, Harvard and Fulbright Scholar. Member of international think tanks. Family seems normal, though with a Foundation and a bank. Athletic, great lean body, married and divorced with kids. Vegan but no drugs and not gay. I kid you not, the banker is also a believing master shaman 🙄. Turns out he is a disciple of Carlos Castaneda, and discreet guru of a “toltequity” movement. This movement combats spanish culture, wants to go back to nahuatl language, has its own Evangile of the Plumed Serpent and inoculates discrimination to upper and lower classes through different channels. Harry Potter and ONG all rolled in one.
Why?? One wonders if this can be explained by the Frankfurt school or by George Soros. To paraphrase Dovstoievsky, if there is no God, men simply become mad?
Hmm,
Very white of the WaPo to give White Brazilians a loud ‘n proud Big W, while in America, white americans are reduced-in-stature with a lowercast w.
(Oops, sorry, Freudian typo: lowercast should read lowercase)
Now, I know when a White Brazilian sets foot in America he/she isn’t a pathetic non-entity, but a loud ‘n proud uppercast (sorry, going all Freudian again, I mean uppercase) H-Hispanic, but what about when I set foot in Brazil?
Am I a yanqui gringo, or a Yanqui Gringo?
Oops, sorry, silly question. I don’t need to go to Brazil, I’m already a yanqui gringo in Los Estados Unidos.
I’ve met a number of mid/high level Amazon employees and contractors. All struck me as intelligent, knowledgeable, and disciplined.
Yet one of Steve’s Big Themes is the increasing childishness of American intellectual life. And here, as Exhibit n+1, is the article by Terrence McCoy and Heloísa Traiano in Jeff Bezos’ vanity project, the #2 newspaper in the country, the Washington Post.
Get me rewrite.
There is no need to outlaw parody, Citizen. In the Current Year, it is not possible.
So- it’s not just flight from the White.
As with gays- it goes both ways.
It’s really bad news (but kind of inevitable given America’s enormous cultural influence) if the rest of the world starts adopting America’s racial categories. They should ask themselves if seeing everything through racial lenses has done any good to the United States.
The song Amerika by the German band Rammstein has been referenced on UR several times. We’re all living in Amerika.
South Africa is miles ahead. 12 years ago a court ruled historic Chinese are ‘black’ alongside Africans, coloreds (mixed race) and Indians.
Trying to make race a social construction instead of … something else?
Now that the racial spoils system in Brazil reserves a certain number of positions for blacks, it’s not hard to see what is going on here.
To paraphrase a saying: In the land of the blacks, the one-half black is king. (That’s certainly been the motto of successful American “blacks” like Barack Obama, Henry Louis Gates, Kamala, et al.)
Hopefully the BLMification and SJWification of Brasil will remain very limited. But they’re so xenophilic that it will be hard for them to resist absorbing the dominant cultural trends of the North American culture they so look up to.

I visited Oporto last year and it was quite White. Most Portuguese look quite similar to Italians. Is there a particular part of Portugal that you’re referencing? The Algarve people looked similar to Algerians I’ve met, but I’d consider Algeria & Tunisia ‘white’ phenotypically if not culturally.
Is this really true? Aren’t some people actually white, both genetically & phenotypically?
Kudos to Steve for bringing us Brazilian news.
Paying attention to Brazil is a useful exercise because–my long held opinion–the United States is basically slumping toward Brazil.
When i was born this was a 90% white nation–essentially a white northwest European nation that was carrying along a 10% black population. Brazil nominally had a “white” majority, but in reality was much more mixed and not effectively functioning as a “white” but a rather as “mixed” nation.
Immigration–and to a much lesser extent differential birthrates–has radically changed our demographics, building an Asian component from trivial to 6% or so, but most importantly absolutely exploding our Latino/mestizo component, to near 20%–and something like a quarter of all births.
In short our demographics have moved significantly toward Brazil’s. We still have a lower black percentage in our genome and are much less mixed, so have a higher functioning white core, plus a smattering of high performing “fancy” Asians.
But our institutions, our technology, our productive enterprises are the product of that old white America. And the boomers now, and soon the X-ers–the last white generations are waddling off to retirement.
Put on a scale with Haiti at say 1 and the old white America at 95. Brazil would be say 75. But the new “diverse!” America’s demographics would be something like 85–much more Brazil-like.
Pay attention to Brazil … cause that’s what our future is going to look more and more like.
Greg Tate, a black man (and, as far as I know, straight), beat all of you pretenders to the punch way back in 1995 or so, when he published “The Black Lesbian Inside Me,” a front-page article in the Village Voice before it went completely off the rails. The piece doesn’t seem to be available online, but it was a hoot, sometimes inadvertently.
Bingo!
I always wondered why they didn’t at least move to Tulsa, but developments in the last 30 years make their decision to stay in NW Arkansas look smarter every day.
Or, perhaps your hillbillies are desperate enough to facilitate the decline of American manufacturing by importing inferior but much cheaper Chinese goods. The profits Walmart and all other retailers reap are basically a function of the wage differential between China (and other third-world countries) and the US, not much smarts required.
One thousand year American empire.

Just identify yourself as Hispanic err, “Latinx.” According to our very own government Hispanics can be of any race, white, black, mixed. If you really wanna go whole hog, just change your last name to “Lopez” or “Rodriguez” etc., after all there’s no law that says you can’t change your name- it’s a free country! Even self-loathing but Mayflower descended iJeb! has claimed an “Hispanic” identity.

Portugal succeed holding to their colonies the longest. The colonized people had to be instigated by both CIA and KGB to rebel against Portugal. In 19c Brazil had to be prodded by Portugal to become independent. Claiming that Portugal is a basket case is misrepresentation. That Portugal fared worse than England or Netherlands after the industrial revolution has nothing to do with miscegenation. Portugal being the oldest ally of England suffered the paternalistic and exploitative treatment by England. This has something to do with retardation of Portugal development. Unlike Germany in 19th century Portugal was under the spell of self serving to England free trade dogma of David Ricardo which justified and promoted the retardation of Portugal: Let the Portuguese produce wine while we (England) will produce high value added products and prevent them from developing their own textile industry.

OneThreeSeven, years ago SUNY at Buffalo reached out to my wife to see if she wanted to be a minority vendor to the University. She qualified because she was a woman, doing less than five million in business and her maiden name, although Italian, was on their list of hispanic names. You were hispanic if your name was on the list, that simple.
Gee Steve. How much longer do we have to suffer through another horrid round of indolent tripe about sainted George Floyd being killed?
I guess we should thank our lucky stars you didn’t drag out the dead horse for another session of beatings all the while snidely insinuating that he was killed by Minneapolis Police Offers.
If anything, he committed “Suicide By Cop”. How do you figure he was killed when his toxicology report stated that he had enough Fentanyl in his system to kill an elephant. Along with all the other drugs he was fond of ingesting to escape the brutal oppression of “White Privilege” in the Great White North.

For the record, George Floyd died of an overdose of illegal drugs while heroic cops did everything in their non-god-like human power to safe the life of another worthless drug addict.
But, all-in-all we got to burn down a city and cause billions in damage so all’s well that ends well.
In XV and XVI centurys (starting in 1415), after all this miscisgenation with Arabs and Berbers (and Jews), the Portuguese raised the first empire where the “sun never sets”… An Asian empire, with is center in India and strongolds from south america to east asia, fighting with the biggest powers on earth, the Otomans, the Persians, Arabs…and other europeans…
In XVII and XVIII, after all this miscigenation with black slaves, the Portuguese build their empire in south america (Brasil) fighting with Spaniards, French and Dutch (Indians don´t count)
In XIX century, lost the american territory, this mongrels built an empire in africa bigger than western europe. That they keep until 1975, when the North America joint the Soviets to destroy it…
What is funny is that all the non caucasian genes in portuguese, after 600 hundred years, is similar to the average white american southerners with only 300 years of contact with subsaharians (2,5 %)… And not even to speak about white south africans with 5 to 8%…
And Portuguese are not White aniway, they are Brancos. And Branco it´s a word used by the portuguese since the XV century, describing the average people in europe, north africa and midlle east. White I don´t know what means…
Oh, which of the plethora of renditions of “Aquarela do Brasil” to link to? This one only features the second half of the classic, but in a medley with the best song ever written about black women’s hair, “Nega do Cabelo Duro”:

Qual é o pente que te penteia
