Facebook’s race-blind policies around hate speech came at the expense of Black users, new documents show

Researchers proposed a fix to the biased algorithm, but one internal document predicted pushback from “conservative partners”

By Elizabeth Dwoskin, Nitasha Tiku and Craig Timberg
Today at 8:00 a.m. EST

… Yet racist posts against minorities weren’t what Facebook’s own hate speech detection algorithms were most commonly finding. The software, which the company introduced in 2015, was supposed to detect and automatically delete hate speech before users saw it. Publicly, the company said in 2019 that its algorithms proactively caught more than 80 percent of hate speech.

But this statistic hid a serious problem that was obvious to researchers: The algorithm was aggressively detecting comments denigrating White people more than attacks on every other group, according to several of the documents. One April 2020 document said roughly 90 percent of “hate speech” subject to content takedowns were statements of contempt, inferiority and disgust directed at White people and men, though the time frame is unclear. …

But, but … that’s good hate! White people and men are hateful.

One of the reasons for these errors, the researchers discovered, was that Facebook’s “race-blind” rules of conduct on the platform didn’t distinguish among the targets of hate speech.

I.e., Facebook’s “race-blind” rules of conduct were indeed race-blind, when what the Washington Post wants are anti-white rules of conduct.

In addition, the company had decided not to allow the algorithms to automatically delete many slurs, according to the people, on the grounds that the algorithms couldn’t easily tell the difference when a slur such as the n-word and the c-word were used positively or colloquially within a community.

E.g., blacks call each other the n-world all the time. (But, as we all know, that’s not a problem because no black ever takes offense at what another black calls him on social media and then goes and gets his Glock. Seriously, I’ve read a half-dozen or more interviews with black police chiefs about the causes of the murder epidemic that blame, in part, social media beefs. But nobody cares about that.)

The algorithms were also over-indexing on detecting less harmful content that occurred more frequently, such as “men are pigs,” rather than finding less common but more harmful content.

Who? Whom?

“If you don’t do something to check structural racism in your society, you’re going to always end up amplifying it,” one of the people involved with the project told The Post. “And that is exactly what Facebook’s algorithms did.”

“This information confirms what many of us already knew: that Facebook is an active and willing participant in the dissemination of hate speech and misinformation,” [Rep. Ilhan] Omar said in a statement. “For years, we have raised concerns to Facebook about routine anti-Muslim, anti-Black, and anti-immigrant content on Facebook, much of it based on outright falsehoods. It is clear that they only care about profit, and will sacrifice our democracy to maximize it.”

Also, Facebook users keep bringing up my short-lived marriage to my gay brother for purposes of immigration fraud. If that’s not Hate Speech, what is?

For years, Black users said that those same automated systems also mistook posts about racism as hate speech — sending the user to “Facebook jail” by blocking their account, as well as made them disproportionate targets of hate speech that the company failed to control. …

The team knew that making these changes to protect more vulnerable minorities over others would be a hard sell, according to the people familiar with the situation. Facebook largely operates with one set of standards for billions of users.

The infamy of operating with one set of standards rather than having double standards.

… In February 2020, Kaplan and other [Facebook] leaders reviewed the proposal [to discriminate against whites and men and straights and especially discriminate against straight, white, men] — and quickly rejected the most substantive changes. They felt that the changes too narrowly protected just a few groups, while leaving out others, exposing the company to criticism, according to three of the people. For example, the proposal would not have allowed the automatic deletion of comments against Mexicans or women. The document prepared for Kaplan referenced that some “conservative partners” might resist the change because they think that “hate targeted toward trans people is an expression of opinion.” …

Kaplan, the company’s most influential Republican, was widely known as a strong believer in the idea that Facebook should appear “politically neutral,” and his hard line free speech ideology

We may well be seeing more of the phrase “hard line free speech ideology” in the near future.

was in lockstep with Zuckerberg. He bent over backward to protect conservatives, according to previous reporting in The Post, numerous former insiders and the Facebook Papers.

But Kaplan and the other executives did give the green light to a version of the project that would remove the least harmful speech, according to Facebook’s own study: programming the algorithms to stop automatically taking down content directed at White people, Americans, and men. The Post previously reported on this change when it was announced internally later in 2020.

In other words, Facebook eventually succumbed to Democratic pressure and okayed hate as long as it was directed at white American men. But that wasn’t enough for the Washington Post.

From the Washington Post in late 2020 spelling out the triumph of Stalinoid Who-Whomism:

Facebook to start policing anti-Black hate speech more aggressively than anti-White comments, documents show

The company is overhauling its algorithms that detect hate speech and deprioritizing hateful comments against Whites, men and Americans.

By Elizabeth Dwoskin, Nitasha Tiku and Heather Kelly
December 3, 2020 at 8:00 a.m. EST

Facebook is embarking on a major overhaul of its algorithms that detect hate speech, according to internal documents, reversing years of so-called “race-blind” practices.

Those practices resulted in the company being more vigilant about removing slurs lobbed against White users while flagging and deleting innocuous posts by people of color on the platform.

“Innocuous” according to us, the Washington Post.

The overhaul, which is known as the WoW Project and is in its early stages, involves re-engineering Facebook’s automated moderation systems to get better at detecting and automatically deleting hateful language that is considered “the worst of the worst,” according to internal documents describing the project obtained by The Washington Post. The “worst of the worst” includes slurs directed at Blacks, Muslims, people of more than one race, the LGBTQ community and Jews, according to the documents.

As one way to assess severity, Facebook assigned different types of attacks numerical scores weighted based on their perceived harm. For example, the company’s systems would now place a higher priority on automatically removing statements such as “Gay people are disgusting” than “Men are pigs.”

Facebook has long banned hate speech — defined as violent or dehumanizing speech — based on race, gender, sexuality and other protected characteristics. It owns Instagram and has the same hate speech policies there. But before the overhaul, the company’s algorithms and policies did not make a distinction between groups that were more likely to be targets of hate speech versus those that have not been historically marginalized. Comments like “White people are stupid” were treated the same as anti-Semitic or racist slurs.

In the first phase of the project, which was announced internally to a small group in October, engineers said they had changed the company’s systems to deprioritize policing contemptuous comments about “Whites,” “men” and “Americans.” Facebook still considers such attacks to be hate speech, and users can still report it to the company. However, the company’s technology now treats them as “low-sensitivity” — or less likely to be harmful — so that they are no longer automatically deleted by the company’s algorithms. That means roughly 10,000 fewer posts are now being deleted each day, according to the documents.

The shift is a response to a racial reckoning within the company as well as years of criticism from civil rights advocates that content from Black users is disproportionately removed, particularly when they use the platform to describe experiences of discrimination.

Some civil rights advocates said the change was overdue.

“To me this is confirmation of what we’ve been demanding for years, an enforcement regime that takes power and historical dynamics into account,” said Arisha Hatch, vice president at the civil rights group Color of Change …

Of course, we at Color of Change never take into account historical dynamics of the last few generations or current power, as recognized by how we imposed our wishes on Facebook.

… Because describing experiences of discrimination can involve critiquing White people, Facebook’s algorithms often automatically removed that content, demonstrating the ways in which even advanced artificial intelligence can be overzealous in tackling nuanced topics.

After all, what is more nuanced than the approved way of thinking: Black Woman Good, White Man Bad?

“We can’t combat systemic racism if we can’t talk about it, and challenging white supremacy and White men is an important part of having dialogue about racism,” said Danielle Citron, a law professor specializing in free speech at Boston University Law School, who also reviewed the documents. “But you can’t have the conversation if it is being filtered out, bizarrely, by overly blunt hate speech algorithms.”

In addition to deleting comments protesting racism, Facebook’s approach has at times resulted in a stark contrast between its automated takedowns and users’ actual reports about hate speech. At the height of the nationwide protests in June over the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, for example, the top three derogatory terms Facebook’s automated systems removed were “white trash,” a gay slur and “cracker,” according to an internal chart obtained by The Post and first reported by NBC News in July. During that time period, slurs targeted at people in marginalized groups, including Blacks, Jews and transgender people, were taken down less frequently.

Aldous said the chart, which employees posted internally in June as a critique of how Facebook excessively defends White people, helped inform the WoW project.

… As protests over Floyd’s death sparked national soul searching in June, Facebook employees raged against the company’s choices to leave up racially divisive comments by President Trump, who condemned protesters.

    Wow, excellent post for this.

The infamy of operating with one set of standards rather than having double standards/blockquote>

The thought I had when reading this is that the Woke Left has no problem with open hypocrisy. It is baked into their Thought Control methodology.

Non Wokesters of all kinds constantly bring up clear examples of this (see Tucker Carlson on any given night). For normal thinking people who aim for moral consistency, hypocrisy is a terrible flaw and failing. We jump on instances of this.

So does the Woke Left and their Media Narrative parrots, when it is about conservatives, populists, Republicans, libertarians or anyone else. They use this club like a Mohawk (no, not you Buzz.)

But they are indifferent to their own use of that double sided “logic.” They don’t care if you call them hypocrites. They don’t change. The only thing they dislike about it is that it may influence others to question or reject the Woke Narrative and Religion of Fascism.

You cannot shame the Woke by calling them hypocrites. They seldom bother to try to refute it. But it is still important to recognize it. Rational people do object to it.

Though they lack enough self-awareness not to mutilate themselves, the girls who want to be boys community has been aware of this for some time now. Particularly since they tend to hang around with other cluster B lesbians who tend to feel quite free to say how much they hate men and white men in particular without a second thought. Sometimes their angst is amusingly driven by the invalidation of their lesbian friends reassuring them that they don’t mean them. (IE, they don’t think of them as men)

  11. How many of these AI stories do we have now? I hope someone is cataloging them. I like how the AI system found that the majority of racist comments were directed at White people, but was explained away by saying the system was “race-blind”… meaning it was using hard data and facts, instead of being preloaded with the correct narrative control parameters.

“politically neutral” is in quotes because we all know there’s no such thing (like being racist against white people). And since there’s no such thing, stop even trying to be neutral and just go with what we say should happen. So at school board meetings, our people get 30 minutes to speak, and you get zero minutes and then get arrested, because that’s democracy.

I’m opposed to the death penalty because I don’t think the government should have that power, but I’ll admit there were things about Dahmer’s murder that bothered me. The same animal who killed him (in prison for murdering a white man in cold blood) also killed another prisoner who was allegedly a white racist or something. Blacks! were pissed at these guys, and Blacks! have friends in low places, so they got their street justice. Meanwhile, the very Black! Eric Boyd is in prison for his participation in the unspeakable rape, murder, torture, etc. of the (very lower case) whites Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom. If some Aryan Brotherhood avenger were to slay Boyd on behalf of angry Caucasians, heads would fucking roll. It doesn’t mean I weep for Dahmer when I admit that I’m not entirely cool with a wink-wink attitude toward ghetto blacks engaging in extrajudicial executions of whites who they think have wronged their race. I’m sure Kyle Rittenhouse had similar thoughts as he faced the prospect of ending up in the same prison where the “justice” you mention occurred.

Oh, and that savage who murdered a white man before he went to prison and got to kill two more is nurturing his sensitive side. If you feel like checking out his poetry, it’s available on Amazon:

Facebook, Steve, is a dead platform. Or a burning one if you like the Nokia phrasing. After Apple introduced their privacy switch in the latest IOS releases, Iphone users must OPT IN to ads. Instead of being forced to OPT OUT. Thus, almost no one on Iphones sees ads on Facebook.

Facebook exists solely as an advertising platform. Already publishers were not happy with Facebook metrics and conversions, this is going to hammer them down terribly. So they are losing money in their core market and really the only one that matters. This may shock you but Facebook makes no money in China and not much in India. Really only the US matters for their profits.

The money they do make increasingly will be from blacks and wokes. Go woke, never fear ever of going broke. That’s how it works. Its like the streamers. Netflix and Disney + are pretty much at saturation point of US Households, and the prices they charge per the FT in say India (\$4 vs \$14 a month) radically constrain any profits (Netflix) can make there. Per the FT recently. They have to spend like crazy for new content, and say the Squid Game that was so popular (allegedly) … ended up driving at best only 50,000 new subscribers.

What the streamers make money on is what Facebook is switching to making money on … your data and your emotional interactions with content. Same with Disney +.

None of the platforms want or need White male viewers. Much like Food Network discovering to its horror in 20010 or so that it had half of its audience White males interested in cooking techniques and recipes, and so took steps to drive them away with girly contest shows, the streamers and Facebook want blacks and gays and lesbians and above all Woke White women to react to various things and allow all sorts of sophisticated breakdowns of said individuals likes/dislikes, attributes, etc. In great detail and more importantly, in emotions based on content viewed (and reviewed/rewound) and paused and fast forwarded and clicked and shared etc.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, all the rest are nothing now but a giant female / gay / black ghetto. Nothing of interest to Straight White men and the streamers are driving entertainment into that ghetto faster than a black man in dreadlocks through a Wisconsin Thanksgiving parade. Call it Brandon Tartikoff’s revenge (the NBC programmer who realized that low ratings could be incredibly profitable if they just had lots of rich White liberals yuppies watching).

This means an even greater bubble of infotainment wrapping up the elite, and blacks and White women, with none of them having even a tiny clue of what White men think or want. That is likely to prove catastrophic when things that seem quite sensible to that cohort get “shut it down for real” pushback from White men. Who increasingly themselves are cultural exiles from Wokemerica.

Naive conservatives need to stop complaining about hypocrisy of the woke/left, who are basically enemy soldiers trying to win a war, and are succeeding.

    Coming right up.

Basic things have recently changed. The Cold War era is over, historical marker being US abandoning both Afghanistan and NATO in a strategic realignment to MacKinder’s purely oceanic strategy (https://www.npr.org/2021/09/15/1037542072/united-states-united-kingdom-and-australia-to-form-new-security-alliance , https://www.thoughtco.com/what-is-mackinders-heartland-theory-4068393 ).

The sort of hard-edged distinction you propose will be unavoidable during the realignment.

There is now no more need to tolerate the resource wasting Left in an attempt to convince the “Third world” that it could adopt Western civilization and become prosperous. The Third World countries are either in Asia (and abandoned) or have already given up on adopting any new social order. Further, the West is now divided (Eurasia vs. the Oceanic countries).

Both parts of the divided West are in serious trouble. NATO as well as European politics were built to US specs, and the Europeans as well as the CIS find themselves all alone on a continent with the PRC. The US finds itself with only the UK and Australia as useful oceanic allies. Both the EU/CIS and the USA find to their shock that they are neither autarkic nor desirable trading partners. The EU and the USA have misallocated capital on a massive scale, and both have encouraged or constructed internal enemies.

Superfluous projects, such as the Left, will be discontinued during a brutal time of transition. The transition will be motivated by harsh conditions, such as the failure of supply chains that began in 2008, and by a lack of a usable international currency.

Pursuit of the purely oceanic strategy will require the AUKUS alliance to shed most Cold War projects, and reallocate the resources to simple survival. Much of WW II was attempts to gain control of the World Island, and much of the next several decades will by devoted to the preliminary campaigns of yet another attempt do do the same thing. The scenario will be much like Orwell’s 1984 background: hot and cold war between EastAsia, Eurasia, and Oceania. This would involve conflict between an alliance between the CIS and Western Europe/CIS vs. Greater China, and the current AUKUS* alliance.

Mackinder believed the pure maritime strategy would ultimately lose to whoever controlled the “World Island”: Asia. Mackinder’s endgame was decline of the Oceanic power (which lacks the resources to retain control of the oceans), and subsequent world dominance by whoever controlled Asia. By “dominance” is meant the sort of control that the US had after 1990 and the British Empire had until 1914 – a limited time primacy as hegemon. “Nothing lasts forever but the Earth and sky”.

AUKUS would be on a hard pressed defensive for the next several decades, and that is when Cold War projects will be dropped.

The conflict inherent in the above will play out over the next 3 decades, or perhaps the next century.

Oceania’s only real hope of winning the long term contest being expansion into space based resources, just as the West in 1500 defeated Islamic expansion by reorganizing itself, developing into new energy, material, and engineering resources, and developing world wide trade. A central economy has little hope of executing such an expansion (think of Spain’s and France’s attempted expansion into the Americas), and the US already has a commercial space industry.

Thanks. Even the antifa are starting to realise that some of their members really are just psychos for whom this is a recreational activity. All the guys Rittenhouse hit had domestic abuse charges or in Rosenbaum’s case, nephew rape. Antisocial personality disorders the whole way down with the antifa. When society opens a door for these guys to act out with the veil of virtue (Some just hate cops because they’re fuckups who constantly get in trouble with them and have a pathological blind spot for their own responsibility) or designate certain people as social inferiors to be attacked, guess what? It attracts these guys like bees on sugar.

Meanwhile women with BPD produce the aggression and cover on social media and egg on the psycho males in real life.

There, corrected that for you. It might have been what you meant, but whites need to understand we’re no longer in the Ideological Age where the fight is about conservative or liberal. We’ve moved into the Demographic Age where the fight is about tribe. It’s an important difference.

    >Antisocial personality disorders the whole way down with the antifa.

As I’ve said before, the true ideologues in Antifa are relatively few in number. They are always behind the scenes and handle the interfacing with the donors. The rank-and-file are overwhelmingly bottom lumpenproles whom Antifa recruits. Frequently homeless, invariably psychologically disturbed, etc. These people could not care less about ideology. Their motives are more prosaic.

It’s true that a healthy portion of them (like the people who attacked Rittenhouse) are low functioning sociopaths-i.e, genuine assholes who love wreaking havoc and harming others for the sake of it. Being paid to do so is just a cherry on top for them. It’s not an accident that there are a lot of sexual offenders in Antifa-that’s the specific *kind* of criminal type, the person who loves targeting defenseless prey, knows how evil it is, and enjoys it precisely because of that. They are malignant and can’t be negotiated with. But others are debtors who owe money to shady criminal types who can and will hurt, even kill them, with little chance of consequence. Anybody in that position is going to to require a strong degree of internal fiber to say no to instant cash. For an addict whose character has been eroded and has little else in the way of realistic options to earn quick money, even illicit money (these people are usually men in their 20s and 30s-the prime recruiting material for any kind of mob violence-so obviously, unlike their women counterparts, most can’t sell their bodies), it’s a unrealistic ask. This doesn’t excuse it, of course, but it is a necessary dimension to add when discussion the rank-and-file of Antifa and what motivates them.

One of the reasons I utterly detest the people behind Antifa is because they unleash the former and take advantage of the latter. These people are completely disgusting-and they enjoy broad support from the corporate media and the Democratic Party. Just think about that. They see nothing wrong with paying violent felons to burn down your town to prove a point.

As one way to assess severity, Facebook assigned different types of attacks numerical scores weighted based on their perceived harm. For example, the company’s systems would now place a higher priority on automatically removing statements such as “Gay people are disgusting” than “Men are pigs.”

I’m guessing this is not a simple list, but I would love to see the algorithm made public so we could tabulate some sample phrases. Not going to happen (I’m amazed the WaPo published that article), but a man can dream. Imagine the fun of seeing the exact same phrase with different targets assigned numerical values. How better to enumerate the current state of Wokemon points and track changes over time? The really fun question is whether the algorithm looks at the demographics of the author.

It would also be interesting to see some statistics concerning the frequency of different slurs and what percentage of the time they are taken down.

    Removed, or buried?

So they can be held up as example.

They know exactly what they are doing. It’s called “scrubbing”.

  64. @Muggles

Yes, of course. In shitlibs one could term it “high tolerance for cognitive dissonance,” while for a certain tribe it mostly reflects a combination of a highly particularistic view of morality with a sense that a narrative is “true” in a meaningful sense if it is useful for the desired purpose.

As Elie Weasel once said: “Certain things are ‘true’ though they didn’t happen, while others are not, even if they did.”

Though it’s unlikely that many of those incitement to violence take the form of simply calling a fellow Black a n—a. What form do they take? Let’s see…

“If you don’t do something to check [so-called] “structural racism” in your society, you’re going to always end up amplifying it,”

We may well be seeing more of the phrase “hard line free speech ideology” in the near future.

Let’s put those three together. While it’s true that major social media companies can hardly be accused of adhering to a “hard line free speech ideology” when it comes to political dissent/ heresy against The Narrative, they do seem to deliberately amplify certain types of incitement to violence that have little to do with so-called “structural racism,” and are much more direct than simply “Hey n—a, how ya doin’?”

“Who I Smoke” — and no, he’s not talking about human cigars. 34 million+ views, and counting. And YouTube/ Google/ Alphabet has no problem with it. Who controls that company again?

“Yeah but it’s just rhetorical…” No, he’s talking about members of a rival crew that he (or his homies) actually did “smoke.”

Rival Jacksonville gangs locked in deadly battle glorified in new viral rap music videos:

The sheriff said the videos are used to glorify guns, drugs and intimidate rival groups or gangs “that can lead to acts of retaliation and drive-by shootings.”

Ya think? I can’t imagine how there could be any possible connection between incentivizing the worst elements of society to directly threaten their rivals and glory in their deaths before an audience of millions and real world violence… can you?

    Mackinder’s purely oceanic strategy…

Typo of the Day! Good thing you corrected it a couple of paragraphs below.

The “World Island” is the ultimate losing strategy. That’s why the Chinese are so adamant about seizing all of the China Sea, North and South, and are so livid about Taiwan. Formosa’s land and people are trivial, her EEZ monumental. The New Silk Road is a pathetic backup. The ridiculous 3½-hour time change at the border says it all. It could not survive anywhere of importance.

Holland and Portugal were world colonial powers for centuries. Even Belgium and Baltic Courland got in on the game. Russia? Hah!

  72. @George

    First I’d heard of this:

He was bullied so much in high school that his mother tried to get a restraining order against his tormenters, and he was clearly desperate for some affirmation. He idolized the police and was invited by adults to take an assault weapon to a civil disturbance. Later, after he’d killed two people, his mother took him to the police station to turn himself in, where, the New Yorker reports, Rittenhouse spent his time crying and vomiting. Raised by a single mother who alleged abuse from his alcoholic father when he was four, the Rittenhouse family had suffered through evictions and bankruptcy. They’d twice lived in shelters, and Kyle had dropped out of high school.

  73. @Mike_from_SGV

You cannot shame the Woke by calling them hypocrites. They seldom bother to try to refute it. But it is still important to recognize it. Rational people do object to it.

Naive conservatives need to stop complaining about hypocrisy of the woke/left, who are basically enemy soldiers trying to win a war, and are succeeding.

Their hypocrisy should be neither complained about nor ignored. It should be utilized. (Look up the true meaning of “utilize“.)

They are actually admitting that we are right:
