Long ago, the oddballs might believe in God and channel their weirdness in that direction. In a way, religion may even be enlivened by oddballs since it is about the supernatural, visions, and transcendence. A good number of saints were probably what we would today call neurotics or even semi-nutters. Joan of Arc was surely a bit funny-wunny.
In a sober and serious society, people with nutty tendencies come under societal and moral pressure to grow up, put away childish things, favor reality over fantasy, develop personal responsibility over fairy-tale lala-land. So, they learn to keep it under wraps. It is not encouraged to fester and go nuts.
But as Chris Hedges has said, we are living in the Empire of Illusion. Pop Culture fills our eyes and ears with fantasy of glory, riches, popularity, sex, success, celebrity, and excess. When Michael Jackson's obsessive crotch-grabbing was normalized and when madonna was hyped as the 'cool' whore toying with a coke bottle on stage --- have a coke and a smile --- , US became a silly place.

To be sure, things had been getting progressively dumber, trashier, and more vulgar since the 60s, but there has been the conceit of rebellion against the Establishment in the counter-culture acts. By the 80s, the Trash Culture had become institutionalized through MTV. It was the Establishment as business and culture.
If Jackson had just been a dance music star, he would have done much harm. But the loony made tons of money, created Neverland, remade himself as white woman, and pretended to be the father of adopted white kids. And if madonna had a few hits and then faded away like Cyndi Lauper, no problemo. But the trashy whore, with help of media, kept 're-inventing' herself and was admired as an 'important artists' who fused Catholicism, paganism, Kabbala, politics, and etc. Paglia, no doubt, had a hand in this.
Both Jackson and madonna were weird figures.
In the US, black males are associated with hyper-masculinity in sports, rap culture, and gangsta antics. But the most famous black guy turned his skin white, looked more and more like a woman, and talked so fey. When so many Negro men in rap were going 'muh dic*', Jackson was going, "my pussy". And then you got madonna, with the name of the most iconic female figure in Western Civilization of purity and grace. She becomes associated with boundless lust and jungle fever with NBA neo-savages. And then, Tarantino came along to usurp the title of 'auteur' as post-modernist mucker-upper of everything, mixing references to art cinema to trash cinema. A generation that grew up on such junk was bound to end up really messed up.
With culture so debased, politics was bound to follow since political culture, at least in a democracy, panders to social culture, and in America, pop culture is the culture.
And with counterculture boomers at the helm, immaturity reigned since the boomers never grew out of the cult of youth.
Prior to boomers, age & experience were respected in America, though surely not as slavishly as in the East, Muslim world, and other traditional societies. It was proper for young people to respect and learn from older folks. Even the boomers felt the tug of this tradition in stuff like LOVE STORY(where the old man isn't such a bad guy) and PAPER CHASE(where Kingsfield is a formidable figure though cold and distant). (To be sure, Segal was born in 37, which makes him pre-boomer. Osborne was born in 45, the first of the boomers, therefore more reserved than later-born boomers). Charles Webb, who wrote THE GRADUATE, was born in 39, so he is a pre-boomer like Segal. Too young to be Greatest Generation, too old to be fully boomer-proper. But they felt the change in the air. Interestingly, J.D. Salinger was born in 1919, which makes him Greatest Generation, but with CATCHER IN RYE he struck a chord that had great relevance in the coming generations. And in some ways, that book is more relevant than ever in our age of millennial nutters. It also inspired Lennon's killer.

But the key difference between the period of CATCHER IN THE RYE and today was NY back then was still a serious and mature place. A creature like Lena Dunham or Emma Sulk would have been unthinkable. I read a slim bio of Susan Sontag recently, and it says her NOTES ON CAMP was initially rejected by the leftist Partisan Review cuz it discussed homosexuals.
Holden Caulfield is a misfit oddball in a world that pressures him to grow up. And in a way, he wants to. But he sees the grown-up world as 'phony' and hypocritical. And yet, he isn't proud of his own inability to face reality, be a man, and be responsible. The world doesn't coddle him. (It's like the mentally odd characters in LAST DAYS OF DISCO and DAMSELS IN DISTRESS are partly redeemed by their sense of elitism and personal responsibility. The D.A. guy could easily lose it, but he does everything to hold it together because of his old-fashioned values, as reiterated in his musing on LADY AND THE TRAMP. And the semi-nut female character in DAMSELS maintains a modicum of sanity with belief in manners, values, and civility.)
But now, we live in the Wes Anderson world where Holden Caulfields of the world are pampered, encouraged, and flattered. Their delusions never come under scrutiny(at least if they have PC-stamp of approval, which is easy enough if you associate your nuttery with 'fighting white male privilege'). Caulfield is stuck in a world where he can't get along with his youthful peers and he can't respect the grown-up world. He disdains his fellow students as stupid, childish, and immature. But he sees the grownup world as compromised and corrupt. So, he fantasizes about childhood, of being like a Peter Pan who keeps children as children forever. But this is a madness, and he knows it, Salinger knows it, and we know it. We know he's gonna go mad, and we recognize it as madness.
But in the Current Year, we mustn't diagnose madness as madness. We live in a world where madness has become normalized, even sacralized. So, Michael Jackson is a white woman-man-child who had white kids. No problem. Let's pretend his death was the passing of the 'king'. So, madonna is an 'important artist' and intersectional symbol of all the threads of history and cultures. She is a MORAL exemplar and leader.
So, Tarantino is a great artist. So, the anus is a 'sex organ', and so is a fake vagina constructed from removal of penis and balls. And there are how many genders, I forget, but they are all real. And NY will fine you for 250,000 dollars if you don't address a man as 'she' if he demands it. And the killer in CA is 'they', even though I don't know why didn't demand the pronoun in Spanish or Azteca. And Obama is The One. And Oprah, she is Mammy America.
If older people with experience -- maybe we need a concept of People of Experience -- still commanded respect, they might tell the young ones to quit the nonsense and grow up. Like what the older men teach the younger fools in RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY. We now live in a world of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. (Trumpism seems to be restoring some of the old manly virtues, but it's too early to tell. Still, it's a refreshing alternative to celebrity obama, man-child Justin Trudeau, flaky new Pope, and Milk-the-Merkel the globo-cow. No wonder Trump wants to deal with Putin, who is a serious man. It's like in THE GODFATHER. Don Corleone meets with Sollozzo because he's a 'serious' person. Good or bad, you gotta be a serious person in real world affairs.)

But the boomers lost this right because they never grew up and always portrayed themselves as forever young. Since youth is king, they pander to the cult of youth. Since youth has no mind of their own, what passes for 'youthful ideas' were put in their heads by those with the power and reach to do so. (It's like Chinese youth during Cultural Revolution were stuffed with ideas of Mao.) Since young people get their ideas from Pop Culture and Propaganda, the end result was Youth Culture & Youth Values being defined by moguls, celebrities, fashionistas, academics, and prog teachers(who themselves were brainwashed).
Of course, young people are dumb enough to believe that they came up with the ideas on their own when, in fact, it's been stuffed there by PC teachers and Pop Culture agents.
Because our culture is youth-centered, those who control the young also control the culture. And young ones are so easy to manipulate, especially since they've been raised in ADD(attention deficit disorder) culture. And because of the Conceit of the Current Year, older people are not respected and admired but judged and accused(like during the Cultural Revolution). The cult of 'progress' says whatever is 'current' MUST BE so much better than what once was. This means young dummies instilled with latest PC are better than ALL that came before. How did homomania spread so fast? Through youth. Since older people were more resistant to such nonsense, the homo agenda activists targeted kids through pop culture and PC. Kids got homo-mesmerized and then made homo demands on older people.
Since Kids Know Best, older people pandered to young people and the Current Year. I mean, how can older people be better than young people when the Past used to be so 'racist', 'sexist', and 'homophobic'? Since those three PC concerns are the trinity of morality, the Current Year MUST BE BETTER since it is less 'racist, sexist, and homophobic'. So, older people must atone and bow down to young demands(based on ideas crammed into young minds by academics, vain celebrities, and Jewish media oligarchs). Academics are bound to be radical sourpusses since they resent the greater success of those in business. If there are two Jewish kids, and if one becomes a super-rich businessman, the other is going to feel resentment, even if he freely chose the life of an intellectual or academic.
Since the rich man has much more power than the 'poor' man with ideas, the latter seeks control by the power of radical ideas and aggressive politics. If the revenge of the nerds is to become rich high-tech tycoons, the revenge of the radicals is to command the ideological agenda. Since Marxism failed and since capitalism won the Cold War, what was left but endless 'culture wars'? So, even though the likes of Mark Zuckerberg has the billions, the cultural agendas are shaped by the likes of his sister who has the radical ideas. Those who go into business have no time to develop ideologies of their own. They latch onto whoever is the loudest and most threatening. After all, what's the point of paying for something you can have for free? One reason why the super-rich catered to the 'left' than to the GOP is because GOP will whore out to the rich class for free no matter what(until Trump came along). In contrast, the 'left' made it clear, "Unless you fund us, we will make trouble for you." A kind of extortion racket.
In a sane world, someone like Hillary Clinton would have been giving advice to the young and telling them to cut it out and grow up. She would look back on her own youth, its many mistakes, and lecture to young people to avoid the same pratfalls. She could say her boomer generation did some notable things but also made huge mistakes. That's what older people are supposed to do. They should listen to young people, but they should also reflect on their own experiences and speak with wisdom. Surely, Hillary had her ups and downs and learned something from life.
But no, we have a crazy culture where Hillary has to prove herself to the spoiled bratty young. So, she has to apologize about not supporting 'gay marriage' and go full-retard on not only homo but tranny stuff. Instead of telling the likes of Dunham to put on some clothes, act with some dignity and self-respect, there is Hillary pandering to Dunham and her ilk to win 'cool' pokemon points. And instead of telling blacks to sober up and get real, she is attending some rap concert with vain morons like Jay-Z who talk shi*.
Slavish respect for older folks is stupid since there are plenty of idiotic or evil old folks. Madeline Albright and John McCain are totally rotten old people.
But certain kinds of understanding come only with age, and young people mustn't be indulged in their hormone-fueled lunacies. But we live in a dumb infantile world. Hillar figured that since Obama had the 'youth' thing, she had to be hip with the kids. She made an ass of herself.
There may have been an ethnic component to the politics of youth. Perhaps, the 6os radicals(many of whom were Jewish or influenced by Jews) wouldn't have been so hostile to Age if the US had been a Jewish-dominated society. But since most of the institutions were controlled by Older Wasps, the generation war(at least in the realm of ideas) had an ethnic shading. It was young Jews vs old wasps. Also, why did so many old Jews side with young against the old? Because there was more Jewish power among the young than among the old? There were more young Jews among the youthful anti-war movement, whereas the CIA, FBI, and Pentagon was, back then, overwhelmingly Wasp(even if Liberal Democrat). And universities in the 60s were still dominated by Wasp professors(even if Liberal Democrat).
Also, the rise of puerility also had an ethnic component. This was foreseen in the drug issue in THE GODFATHER. Though everyone in THE GODFATHER is a gangster involved in Vice industry than Virtue industry, there's moral hierarchy even among the gangsters. By mafia standards, the Corleones are into the Virtue Industry. Gambling is cleaner and more respectable than Prostitution and certainly more than narcotics. But narcotics is a huge threat because there is so much money in it. Also, if gambling must be restricted to the dens and bookies, drugs can go all over the street and all over the nation, indeed the world. Drugs are bad stuff but there is great money in it since people have a hard time saying NO to pleasure, and drugs offer more instant pleasure than gambling and prostitution. In WOLF OF WALL STREET, the guys get their highs from making money, but that takes a lot of work and effort. But if they snort or smoke drugs, it's an instant high, and that seeking of the HIGH becomes the basis of their lives. From drugs to drug-mentality, or drugs-as-metaphor to the point where even job is seen as a drug.

Domination of Vice Industry was an easy way to gain power and influence fast, and Jews were more adept at this than Wasps since they were less inhibited and shameless.

1. Constant stream of words. Would expect more jumbling and stumbling.
2. Constant, controlled emotional level. Not emotional enough to be a freak-out. At this emotional level, would expect more self-consciousness about causing a scene.
3. Calms down too quickly at the end when she answers the barista’s question.

If staged, it is skillfully staged by a group with a keen ear for snowflake self-absorption. Theater people maybe?
Reasons I could be wrong.

When I used to work at specialty video store, there used to be odd customers like that who’d just rant on and on about who-knows-what.

But as Chris Hedges has said, we are living in the Empire of Illusion. Pop Culture fills our eyes and ears with fantasy of glory, riches, popularity, sex, success, celebrity, and excess. When Michael Jackson’s obsessive crotch-grabbing was normalized and when madonna was hyped as the ‘cool’ whore toying with a coke bottle on stage — have a coke and a smile — , US became a silly place.
To be sure, things had been getting progressively dumber, trashier, and more vulgar since the 60s, but there has been the conceit of rebellion against the Establishment in the counter-culture acts. By the 80s, the Trash Culture had become institutionalized through MTV. It was the Establishment as business and culture.
If Jackson had just been a dance music star, he would have done much harm. But the loony made tons of money, created Neverland, remade himself as white woman, and pretended to be the father of adopted white kids. And if madonna had a few hits and then faded away like Cyndi Lauper, no problemo. But the trashy whore, with help of media, kept ‘re-inventing’ herself and was admired as an ‘important artists’ who fused Catholicism, paganism, Kabbala, politics, and etc. Paglia, no doubt, had a hand in this.

It was proper for young people to respect and learn from older folks. Even the boomers felt the tug of this tradition in stuff like LOVE STORY(where the old man isn’t such a bad guy) and PAPER CHASE(where Kingsfield is a formidable figure though cold and distant). (To be sure, Segal was born in 37, which makes him pre-boomer. Osborne was born in 45, the first of the boomers, therefore more reserved than later-born boomers). Caulfield is stuck in a world where he can’t get along with his youthful peers and he can’t respect the grown-up world. He disdains his fellow students as stupid, childish, and immature. But he sees the grownup world as compromised and corrupt. So, he fantasizes about childhood, of being like a Peter Pan who keeps children as children forever. But this is a madness, and he knows it, Salinger knows it, and we know it. We know he’s gonna go mad, and we recognize it as madness.
But in the Current Year, we mustn’t diagnose madness as madness. We live in a world where madness has become normalized, even sacralized. So, Michael Jackson is a white woman-man-child who had white kids. No problem. Let’s pretend his death was the passing of the ‘king’. So, madonna is an ‘important artist’ and intersectional symbol of all the threads of history and cultures. She is a MORAL exemplar and leader.

Because our culture is youth-centered, those who control the young also control the culture. And because of the Conceit of the Current Year, older people are not respected and admired but judged and accused(like during the Cultural Revolution). If there are two Jewish kids, and if one becomes a super-rich businessman, the other is going to feel resentment, even if he freely chose the life of an intellectual or academic.

So, even though the likes of Mark Zuckerberg has the billions, the cultural agendas are shaped by the likes of his sister who has the radical ideas. Those who go into business have no time to develop ideologies of their own. They latch onto whoever is the loudest and most threatening. After all, what’s the point of paying for something you can have for free? One reason why the super-rich catered to the ‘left’ than to the GOP is because GOP will whore out to the rich class for free no matter what(until Trump came along). In contrast, the ‘left’ made it clear, “Unless you fund us, we will make trouble for you.” A kind of extortion racket.
In a sane world, someone like Hillary Clinton would have been giving advice to the young and telling them to cut it out and grow up. She would look back on her own youth, its many mistakes, and lecture to young people to avoid the same pratfalls. She could say her boomer generation did some notable things but also made huge mistakes. That’s what older people are supposed to do. They should listen to young people, but they should also reflect on their own experiences and speak with wisdom. Surely, Hillary had her ups and downs and learned something from life.

The PBS cooking show America’s Test Kitchen (filmed in Boston) features pronunciations that make my skin crawl. Oddly, the show seems to enforce pronunciation rules on the talent, so everyone on the show says ‘care-a-melle’. And they all say ‘croissant’ with a heavy-handed French accent.
