From the Washington Post, a “Perspective:”

The racist roots of the dog whistle

By Adam R. Shapiro
Adam R. Shapiro is a historian of science and technology. He’s the author of “Trying Biology: The Scopes Trial Textbooks, and the Antievolution Movement in American Schools.”
August 21, 2020 at 3:00 a.m.

The term “racist dog whistle” is not new. But President Trump may represent the perfection of “dog-whistle politics,” using phrases, symbols and tweets to create plausible deniability whenever his policies seem too overtly racist.

Because Trump, with his perfect 800 on the SAT Verbal test, is obviously a verbal genius who precisely calibrates every utterance that comes out of his mouth so his followers know exactly what he is implying but his enemies can never quite prove it, but they just know. Or something like that …

… The device we now think of as a dog whistle was designed by Francis Galton, whose most famous work was inventing the term “eugenics” and creating a science of racial differences and race “improvement.”

… The use of the original “dog whistles” was shaped by racial dynamics in the United States. Hunting dogs didn’t just pursue foxes or birds. Before the Civil War, they were frequently used to track enslaved Black people. Dogs trained to hunt humans were highly prized among enslavers and the slave catchers they employed.

Even after slavery’s abolition, dogs continued to reinforce the racial politics of the Jim Crow South. Trained dog packs, used in activities like fox hunting, became a manifestation of White Southern elites’ pretensions toward aristocracy and nostalgia for the era of slavery.

It was not until about 1940 that the dog whistle, a tool for signaling and training hunting dogs, and Galton’s ultrasonic whistle — mainstay of the psychology lab — were combined into a single technology. The first patent was filed for a dog whistle “of [sufficiently] high frequency so that it may be heard by a dog but not heard by the human ear.”

The “silent” dog whistle changed which kinds of dogs were being whistle-trained. No longer were whistles primarily a tool for hunting over long distances. They were for suburban dogs — an increasingly salient feature of the racially segregated and suburbanizing American landscape. As ads for Purina whistles promised, these couldn’t disturb your neighbors.

Silent dog whistles also became a tool for training police dogs. Though connections between dogs and policing in America go back to the days of slave catchers, the role of dogs in modern policing gained wider use in the 1950s. According to one 1961 study, “the public has fully accepted the canine corps. There were only three complaints reported, one not described and the other two stemming from the feeling among Negroes that dogs are used in their areas disproportionately to the need for them.” The overpolicing of Black neighborhoods — including with dogs — was rooted in ideas about criminality, race and intelligence and morals that go straight back to Galton and the psychologists he influenced.

The introduction of dogs to modern policing took hold just in time for the animals to feature in iconic and violent images of the struggle for civil rights, including police dogs attacking peaceful Black protesters in Birmingham, Ala., in 1963. President Trump evoked this scene earlier this year when he threatened Black Lives Matter protesters with “vicious dogs,” a comment that only avoided the “racist dog whistle” label because its motives seemed obvious.

It was in this context that the silent dog whistle, an invention that unified racist scientific equipment with racist cultures of dog hunting, became a technology that facilitated violent opposition to civil rights.

… Morin’s column was written just weeks after the broadcast of the infamous Willie Horton campaign ad, perhaps the clearest example of a racist dog whistle in American politics before Trump.

I’m starting to get the impression that today’s enlightened, like Chairman Mao and Papa Doc Duvalier before them, are working themselves up toward banning dogs.

Dogs seem insufficiently Woke. Just look at them!

Don’t dogs have “masters?” Yet, most dogs seem to love their masters. What’s wrong with them? Whose side are they on anyway?

Do you know who are the real running dogs of white monopoly capitalism?

Dogs, that’s who!

  1. All these MSM projection pieces are dog whistles for their blind followers.

    Well……of course he is.

What's delusional? All these things are basically true and I'm sure writing this article was not only very emotionally satisfying but also serves his material interests.

It's fun to rile people up against your enemies and gang up on them! Even apes can see that.

What a gift to America, these Jewish verbalists.

I'm just a dumb midwestern hayseed--can hardly think without a bit of straw between my teeth--and my eyes glaze over at the abject stupidity midway in.

A good title for a book: "A 100 Years of Calumny"

Seriously, if white people suck so bad ... why are you here?

It's not like there isn't an option anymore. Make aliyah already. (Sorry Palestinians ... but better you than me.)

I think that one might plausibly diagnose him as a schizophrenic based on this sample of his thought processes. One of the characteristics of schizophrenic speech , which can be used as a diagnostic criterion, is the continuous and constant tendency to jump abruptly between apparently unrelated topics, based on some tenuous and idiosyncratic link existing solely in the schizophrenic's disordered thought processes. This sample of Shapiro's writing is a perfect example.

I have just finished reading a translation of the diary, which Nijinsky wrote over the course of about two months, during the later phases of his tragic descent into schizophrenia (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=nijinsky+diary&crid=N8JEDWRC15I7&sprefix=Nijinsky%2Caps%2C166&ref=nb_sb_ss_i_4_8).

Shapiro's deranged screed, particularly his repeated, inane jumps from one unrelated topic to another, reminded me to a shocking degree of entries in Nijinsky's dairy.

    The man needs help.

Does he put biology on trial when say, presented with say, Harvard admission rates for Asians and Jews, given that he’s a Harvard guy?

What is his take on it?

  5. As always, the left is absurd. Always accuse youre adversary of the Evil that you do yourself. It is only the leftists that blows the race whistle. The dog whistle of race never stops it’s shrill scream. It has been blown by every so-called journalist in the main stream media continuously since President Trump came down the escalator. They never stop blowing that Dog whistle. Whenever a Democrat gets caught doing something evil vile or traitorous, that Democrats blow that whistle as loud as he or she can to distract the public from what’s really going on.Both the race card, and a dog whistle of race, belong to the left.

Leftists don't use dog whistles because they don't have to. They've constructed the dominant moral system in such a way that they're allowed to openly advocate for their group's interests. Whites can't do that so they have to speak in code and they're generally too scared to even do that. So most "dog whistles" aren't even real and are just used to police and constrain the discourse of whites by making an example of what would happen if they DID use an actual dog whistle.

"Always accuse youre adversary of the Evil that you do yourself. It is only the leftists that blows the race whistle."

Once again, the left accuses the right of doing something that is beyond reach of the senses: "invisible backpacks", "implicit bias" and "dog whistling"; items which can be neither measured, affirmed nor denied. And they do this openly, with impunity, bashing whites with slanderous smears and libels that are well within the range of sensibility.

They do openly what they accuse the republicans of doing clandestinely.

  6. The Democrats own the dog whistle of race these days and they use it all the time.

Ever since President Trump came down that escalator, nobody on the left has ever stopped blowing the race whistle. No matter what the president says, they blow the race whistle. No matter what he does, they blow the race whistle. If anybody makes a thumbs up, they blow the whistle. Anybody says OK, they blow the race whistle.

The mainstream media never stops. Democrats do something wrong, get in trouble,Commit treason, they blow the whistle even louder to distract everybody about what they themselves are doing. Make no mistake, the Democrats owne the dog whistle as much as they own the race card.

  7. Only for whites. Coloreds will still be allowed to engage in the rich, vibrant cultural tradition for which Michael Vick was racistly targed by the white man.

Muslims also really don’t like dogs. And they’re not exactly known for their live and let live attitude.

I don’t support an all out ban on dogs but I think it would be preferable to the current anarchic status quo. Middle class people (especially women) get emotional satisfaction from their dogs being miserable without them, and so let their scared and lonely dogs bark and annoy people all day. And then underclass people, in addition to training their dogs to be weapons and consciously using them to colonize space from respectable people, have no qualms about letting them bark and bark and bark even when they’re home.

    racist cultures of dog hunting

The Myth believed by New York Jews:
Evil Southern white man with vicious dogs hunts blacks, raccoons, and other helpless animals in an endless racist slaughter.

    The Reality:
I was walking on a country road in the cotton fields in eastern Arkansas a few years ago and passed a black man holding a rifle. He was looking up in the trees. I asked him if he had shot any squirrels, and he said not yet. We talked a bit about squirrel hunting and then I went on my way.

  19. Banning the dog whistle doesn’t go far enough. Galton is also responsible for standard deviations, correlation and regression and all sorts of other statistical concepts – it’s time we banned them and any scientific knowledge derived from them.

We now have entire Woke States aka deep blue states (usually run by tyrant governors).

After Newsom’s office sent out instructions last week for wearing masks in between mouthfuls while eating — you know anything can happen next including outlawing dogs.

I travel back and forth between two sane states with very few lockdown regs. Basically unrestricted. So it is bizarre to see groups of people wearing masks outside. As if that is normal behavior.

Here is a pic of the nutcase Pocahontas campaigning for Biden in NH a semi rural setting outside… the pitifully small woke crowd is all masked up:

    https://mobile.twitter.com/ihatethemedia/status/1314992919200165888/photo/1

This is farking New Hampshire where the license plate motto is “Live Free or Die”…

THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC PURPOSE FOR WEARING MASKS OUTSIDE IN THE OPEN AIR. IT’S IRRATIONAL.

In fact regular mask wearing requires a skilled operator with plenty of replacement stock of certified masks. Pro hospital staff need to be trained to

    1 fit the mask properly
2 not to touch their face and
3 not to touch the mask itself and
4 to regularly discard each mask every few hours

Should be obvious that crowds of untrained people wearing masks outside or even inside is pointless and in fact harmful due to bacteria build up.

The point is that the Woke States are already behaving irrationally with disregard for actual science.

If Woke people are wearing masks outside en masse today it’s entirely possible that they will eventually outlaw dogs tomorrow.

SAVE THE DOGS: STOP WEARING MASKS

PS most everybody involved in the shooting in Denver today was outside in the open air and masked up. Ironically the single lunatic BLM guy doing the instigating was not.

I think the only people realistically who’d have a chance to humiliate blacks
in sports are the Slavs, both men and women. These days, after overthrowing
the Marxist dictatorships and with good nutrition they have become tall,
fast, and strong. E.g., Iga Światek, the Polish teenager who just won the
French Open has exceptionally fast reflexes. And indeed, Slavic women
are gradually taking over the upper echelons of tennis. Although I’d say
that the Slavs still need perhaps one more generation of good nutrition
to reach their full physical potential in terms of height, speed, fast reflexes,
strength, and endurance. Marxist totalitarianism that was inflicted
on the Slavs until 1990 or so deprived them of good nutrition for a number of
generations. I’m speaking primarily of the Western and Southern Slavs.
Eastern Slavs like Russians were extremely malnourished for many
    generations.

It would be easy to make both NBA and NFL, say, three quarters white
but you’d have to recruit deep within Europe’s 240 million Slavonic talent
pool, and that would require breaking the black (near) monopoly in basketball
and football recruitment. Who would be brave enough to do it?

Meanwhile, American youth are mired in dissolute lifestyles, drugs, obesity,
and a preoccupation with microaggressions, correct pronouns, and
safe spaces. Athletically, they no longer measure up to the
    rest of the industrialized world.

I can remember only one instance where the concept was used probably appropriately: GWB using sometimes talking points with religious intonations which would have been perceived by his evangelical base but not by the general public.
The concept has always been widely overused and is even less useful to describe the current informational environment in which there are ways to talk to a particular public without supposedly adding secret language in a speech destined to the general public.

Re: amniocentesis -- I tried looking up the effect that increased prenatal testing is having on live births of infants with Trisomy 21 and other readily-identified genetic defects. That effect should be increasing with the introduction and acceptance of Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), which replaces amniocentesis with nextgen sequencing analysis of DNA from a tube of the mother's blood -- noninvasive (duh), slightly more accurate, can be done earlier in pregnancy, and no risk of needles near the fetus.

You say that like it's a bad thing. If there's one thing we don't need more of in the world, it's children with serious genetic defects. Tay-Sachs babies appear normal up until they are around 3-6 months old.
But then they lose the ability to turn over, sit, or crawl. This is then followed by seizures, hearing loss, and inability to move, with death usually occurring by the age of four. In other words, a short life of mostly misery for the child and even more for his parents. If prenatal testing prevents even one such child from being born then it's a force for good in the world.

I think that one might plausibly diagnose him as a schizophrenic based on this sample of his thought processes. One of the characteristics of schizophrenic speech , which can be used as a diagnostic criterion, is the continuous and constant tendency to jump abruptly between apparently unrelated topics, based on some tenuous and idiosyncratic link existing solely in the schizophrenic’s disordered thought processes. This sample of Shapiro’s writing is a perfect example.

This screed reads as if Mr. Shapiro is writing while still in a dream. I got tired this morning and lay down for a bit, and I know I am tired when I start drifting into dreamland. One thought goes into another via some small connection between words or the sound of words or pictures or I don't know ...

Dog whistles ... invented by a guy ... had some slaves... dogs... barking... hunting quail and foxes ... oh, dogs chasing down slaves ... Cool Hand Luke... blood hounds ... Shawshank Redemption ... wait... 2 white guys ... oops, back to dogs .... blowing whistles ... slavery, black people... dogs don't like 'em.... black people don't like cops ... cops have dogs .... gotta get this down on paper.

I ran my dogs off leash  in DC in the eighties and nineties, leftover hippie shit. It was great, down the Mall in front of the Capitol, into the reflecting pool. The dogs, one black, one white, would sit at the streetlight crosswalk waiting  for me  to ride up on my blue three speed Schwinn with a beige baby seat on the back and give them the command to Go! Run Free! Maintain Order and keep the Mall free of squirrels! Then, having policed and maintained dog order in that greensward block of the Mall they would head to the next crosswalk and wait for my command. We maintained order and the squirrels knew their place.
Off leash dogs, free to move about as they wished(within limits), are a proxy for YT guys. As you see more and more panjandrum enforced leash laws come into play so will the former freedoms You used to enjoy be restricted. It goes hand in hand, leashed dogs and leashed guys. The more immigration  from countries with cultures that despise dogs or eat them, the fewer freedoms for dogs and  their former partners…the YT guys.If dogs, the ultimate minority(what is the percentage of dogs in the House of Representatives?) are to be set free from repression we need to repeal leash laws and cease all immigration.

Well, we all know about Persian cats, but few are aware of the fact that many European breeds, including the English bulldog, are descended from Iranian dogs known as alaunts (Alan dogs). Dogs had a very high status in Zoroastrianism, which influenced Judaism quite a bit. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the negative biblical and talmudic references to dogs were a means of drawing a distinction between the religions. In Islam, which also borrowed from Zoroastrianism, this seems to have been the case. Muslims in newly-conquered Persia allegedly abused dogs to demoralize the natives.

I have to say that while on one level what Shapiro has written is just a bunch of non-sequiturs that have little to do with the actual history of racism, on the other hand, it is a sort of impressive intellectual accomplishment that he has been able to pull together so many threads (albeit very thin threads) that connect dogs and white racism.

    Replies: @Bill P

Well, we all know about Persian cats, but few are aware of the fact that many European breeds, including the English bulldog, are descended from Iranian dogs known as alaunts (Alan dogs). Dogs had a very high status in Zoroastrianism, which influenced Judaism quite a bit. It wouldn’t surprise me if some of the negative biblical and talmudic references to dogs were a means of drawing a distinction between the religions. In Islam, which also borrowed from Zoroastrianism, this seems to have been the case. Muslims in newly-conquered Persia allegedly abused dogs to demoralize the natives.

The Alans were a fierce race of mostly steppe dwellers similar to Huns and later, Mongols who lived in and around the Black and Caspian seas. They were an early group who, being pushed by Huns and others out of their homeland (parts of northern Iran Russia, Ukraine today) ended up clashing with the Romans.

They later pushed into areas in and around Hungary and up into Austria, Bavaria and France. They got around. I think some ended up in what is now Spain. Some also migrated to N. Africa as Romans overran Hispaniola.

So I guess their dogs (probably bred for both hunting and fighting) went with them. Like the Alans themselves their dogs bred with local breeds and voila we have new breeds of both European dogs and peoples. Don’t mess with the Alans. Romans pushed them around but they survived.

You know, the Alans (now known as Ossetians) have recently resurrected their old religion, which they call "Assianism" (I would have recommended an alternative spelling in English). They stick a sword in a pile of stones at some shrines to Mithra. It's been speculated that this is the origin of the Arthurian myth.

Personally, I think the Germans borrowed from them as well, what with Odin, the eastern horseman, and his runes. Yes, Scythians used runes. And what's with the holy fire of Pentecost? Probably an Iranic idea imported via Greek culture, e.g. Heraclitus.

Don't get me started on their influence in ancient China.

Adam Shapiro is a delusional man consumed by hate.

This screed reads as if Mr. Shapiro is writing while still in a dream. I got tired this morning and lay down for a bit, and I know I am tired when I start drifting into dreamland. One thought goes into another via some small connection between words or the sound of words or pictures or I don’t know …

Dog whistles … invented by a guy … had some slaves… dogs… barking… hunting quail and foxes … oh, dogs chasing down slaves … Cool Hand Luke… blood hounds … Shawshank Redemption … wait… 2 white guys … oops, back to dogs …. blowing whistles … slavery, black people… dogs don’t like ’em…. black people don’t like cops … cops have dogs …. gotta get this down on paper.

Is that what schizophrenia is like, dreaming while you are awake? They hear voices too. I wonder if this guy does.

    They had slavery in Yorkshire?

The Bilsdale Hunt: England’s oldest Fox Hunt, Hunting since 1668

…they were frequently used to track enslaved Black people. Dogs trained to hunt humans were highly prized among enslavers and the slave catchers they employed.

Slave catchers are the biggest WTF in American history. They’re the equivalent of an armed attack on the water treatment plant to retrieve your morning poo.

That effect should be increasing with the introduction and acceptance of Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), which replaces amniocentesis with nextgen sequencing analysis of DNA from a tube of the mother’s blood — noninvasive (duh), slightly more accurate, can be done earlier in pregnancy, and no risk of needles near the fetus.

    https://www.disabled-world.com/disability/statistics/ds.php

The states represented in this study - Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Florida, Kentucky and Arizona - were chosen based on the availability of data on numbers of children born with Down syndrome over several years. Numbers of elective terminations were calculated based on the difference between actual births and what would be expected based on numbers of older mothers - who are both at a greater chance of pregnancies with Down syndrome and more likely to have prenatal screening.

In 2010, there was an estimated total of 1,386 annual births with Down syndrome across the nine states, corresponding to 1 in 824 live births.

Live birth prevalence ranged from 1 in 729 in Florida to 1 in 1,256 in Kentucky.

The estimated reduction percentage - the proportion of live births reduced as a result of elective termination - was 39 percent overall and ranged from 26 percent in Indiana and Michigan to 52 percent in New Jersey.

The researchers estimate that without terminations, an additional 898 individuals with Down syndrome would have been born in the nine states during 2010.

The effects of elective termination on the population size of people with Down syndrome, which was estimated to produce an overall drop of 22 percent in individuals with Down syndrome living in these states, ranged from a 11 percent reduction in Kentucky to 30 percent in Massachusetts. Among different ethnic groups, population size reduction was highest at 51 percent in Asian/Pacific Islanders, followed by 22 percent in non-Hispanic whites, 21 percent in non-Hispanic blacks, 17 percent among Hispanics and 4 percent among Native Americans/Alaskans.

While elective termination has reduced the prevalence of Down syndrome in all nine states, the researchers note that total numbers of people living with Down syndrome steadily increased from 1950 to 2010, the last year for which data was available. The higher level of termination in the Northeast - specifically Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey - is probably attributable to numbers of older mothers and increased willingness to terminate a pregnancy because of Down syndrome.

You say that like it’s a bad thing. If there’s one thing we don’t need more of in the world, it’s children with serious genetic defects.
If prenatal testing prevents even one such child from being born then it’s a force for good in the world.
