SAN FRANCISCO — It’s now a weekly, if not daily, occurrence: A video is posted on Facebook or Twitter showing a white person calling police on black people for minor violations or nothing at all, a new form of social media shaming that’s exposed the everyday racism black Americans face and brought swift repercussions for the perpetrators.
Tagged with nicknames like BBQ Becky and Permit Patty, white people who’ve reported black people for sitting in Starbucks, shopping at CVS, mowing lawns, playing golf, staying at an Airbnb or napping on a couch in a college dorm are being publicly named, mocked and, in some cases, fired from their jobs.
White people have been policing black behavior for a long time. If they think someone black seems out of place, they know they can say something to the property manager, a store supervisor or the police, sociologists who study race say. Many black people in these situations don’t bother to complain publicly. They say they’re unlikely to be believed or their concerns will be dismissed. And they don’t want to escalate the situation and end up in jail or worse.
Now footage captured on smartphones and spread instantly on social media is shining the spotlight on how black people are singled out “simply because they are black,” says George Yancy, a professor of philosophy at Emory University and author of “Backlash: What Happens When We Talk Honestly about Racism in America.”
C’mon, Professor Yancy: “Backlash?” That’s pretty boring compared to some of your other titles like “Black Bodies, White Gazes,” “Look, a White! Philosophical Essays on Whiteness” and “Pursuing Trayvon Martin.” Whatsamatta with “Blacklash”? I don’t know what blacklash means, but I’m sure you’d think of something.
Here’s Yancy’s classic interview in the NYT of animal rights philosopher Peter Singer, who appeared to have been under the mistaken impression that he was going to be interviewed about his theory of “speciesism,” but Yancy turned every question from speciesism to what Yancy is interested in, which is, surprise!, racism.
The current firestorm was set off in May by a white woman, Jennifer Schulte, who was rechristened BBQ Becky after she called police on two black men for using a charcoal grill at a public park in Oakland, California. The police eventually advised the men charcoal wasn’t permitted in that part of the park …
People often think of racism as major acts of aggression, but sociologists say smaller scale acts, sometimes referred to as microagressions, are more common. They can include everything from disapproving looks to chastising remarks for perceived infractions of racial etiquette, social norms dating back to slavery days and Jim Crow laws on racial segregation that dictated how black people should behave in public and interact with white people.
The way white people caught in these videos on social media lay claim to public places amount to individual acts of gentrification, sending the message: This is my space and you can only behave here the way I say you can, Yancy says. …
We are always hearing from Raj Chetty about how black people happen to live on all the Tragic Dirt and need to be moved to the Magic Dirt. But blacks, outside of the rural south, aren’t exactly American Indians stuck on remote, eroding reservations. Instead, blacks tend to live in conveniently located urban locales, from which their ancestors drove out the whites via street violence. So they like where they live.
Also, I suspect that a lot of white people have a self-interested reaction to these videos shaming white women. As I’ve often noted, the biggest real estate hot potato in America are poor blacks. Nobody wants this hot potato dumped in their laps. So white people in the rest of the country react negatively to white gentrifiers in Oakland or Cambridge trying to push out local blacks and dump them on somewhere else. Of course, nobody is allowed to express this sentiment or even explain the logic of it, so it gets channelled into a lot of white-on-white hate, for which it is always open season.
America has a legacy of racism going back hundreds of years, so what’s giving people new license to confront blacks and other minorities in public spaces?

I have no problem with people being exposed when they waste police resources to mess with people minding their own business, following the rules. Stupid cops who murder people in cold blood elicit no sympathy, and should be exposed as well.
But things like permits, and rules about making fires in parks, are a part of what make first-world societies work, and third-world societies shitholes. If someone breaks those rules, you bet I’m going to report them.

OT: Teh Genius Coates has announced he will no longer be writing for the Atlantic. Has no immediate plans to start writing elsewhere. Apparently he needed a bit of a breather after 4-5 years of superstardom. Who knows, could be related to the “exhaustion” trend Steve has been noticing for a while now.
There is a simple reason for this. The last time a white killed a black seems to be when Emmit Till was bumped off. To keep their “I am a victim” racket going they have to use these micro aggression, even though they are often clearly in the wrong.

Both victims were black. This factor has contributed a racial aspect to the incidents akin to that in other cases of alleged police brutality having special focus on blacks.
The obvious, and least offensive explanation is that neighborhoods largely populated by blacks tend to have high crime rates, so police (and police dogs) are more frequently present in them.
However, there’s another question – how can dogs be racist?
Canine vision is supposed not to be acutely color-sensitive, and more attuned to motion than anything. On the other hand, dogs have a very acute sense of smell. Could they learn to distinguish negroes from whites by smell? If so, is anyone in the police department training them to do so, or do they just do it instinctually?

I think that most white folks are happy to let Negros act any way they like in their own cities and towns. And if white folks don’t like how they run things, they can always leave.
Let’s be honest here. Most white folks figure it really isn’t our place to pay for and impose white standards of behavior on Negros. As an extreme example, I am happy to let them pursue their traditional forms of vigilante justice and defend their personal honor by killing whoever they want. And I am not inclined to try to “rehabilitate them” (i.e. forcing white standards of behavior on them) by wasting white money to keep them in jail. As long as they stay away out of white folks’ areas I am fine with whatever they wish to do.
It would have the further salutary effect of forcing the Talented Tenth to take responsibility for their own people, stay home in their own neighborhoods, and uplift them (rather than doing as the Talented Tenth do now and run off to live with the white folks).
Liberia is a wonderful example of the civilization and culture that Negros can develop if they set their minds to it. Liberia was founded by black freedmen, and is so dedicated to Negro self-development and the preservation of Negro culture that it bars all whites and people of color (other than Negros, that is) from owning property or becoming citizens.

Don’t white people do this to each other pretty often? Isn’t everyone familiar with the HOA busybody who’s always got their eyes opened for people who are breaking HOA rules, or calling the police if someone’s breaking the law in a minor but annoying way (e.g., consistently parking on the wrong side of the street)? I think some black people don’t understand white people very well. Many white people like and expect things to be orderly. They don’t like it when people don’t follow rules that people are … well …. expected to follow.
The bigger picture would also have to count all the incidents in which whites reported blacks who really were committing a crime.
It seems like a lot of black people perceive neutral enforcement of minor health/order/safety regulations some form of "picking on" them for some reason. I wonder if there isn't a correlation between a mix of low IQ and high self-esteem and feelings of persecution as the result of rule enforcement. This is a sense I get about teachers complaints about teaching in schools populated by blacks - a reluctance to abide minimum necessary standards of classroom behavior (sitting in the desk and not talking while the teacher is lecturing), with wholly disproportionate reactions and expressions of persecution in response to attempts at rule enforcement. Naturally, the teachers are fighting a losing battle, so when D'Qwantavious is told to sit down and shut up (where sitting down and shutting up isn't always the norm) it feeds into feelings of persecution.Replies: @AndrewR
That’s basically it. Here in DC white folks in gentrifying areas call cops on Latinos and blacks playing their music too loud. The minority residents complain they’re playing their music at the same level without any complaints before.
Just watched Equalizer 2, Coates book was featured prominently in two scenes. In one scene Denzel’s character tells a wayward black kid he’s taken an interest in to read it.

I was working in Chester, PA pouring and finishing a concrete sidewalk. While down on my hands and knees troweling the concrete, a large pitbull was released into a yard 10 feet from my work area. The dog was barking, growling and trying to leap the 5 foot chain link fence of his yard.
I got up and backed away and told my boss that I was leaving and would sit in the truck until the area was safe.
The owner of the dog appeared. My boss asked him to restrain the dog and put him in the house until we were finished the job which would have been about an hour. The dog owner said no, the dog was in his yard and we could not tell him what to do with his dog on his property.
My boss said to the man, “I’m calling the police.” The man immediately collared the dog and dragged the animal into the house while yelling to us …. “why you gotta call the cops!”

In “Sorry to Bother You,” (don’t bother seeing it – it’s horrible), Donald Glover’s character advises the main character on how to use “white voice” during telemarketing calls. He describes “white voice” as “not how they actually sound, but how they *think* they sound, how they *wish* they sounded,” or something to that effect. Clear echoes of Coates’ “people who think they are white.” I expect to see many, many more references to him in TV shows and movies going forward, unfortunately.

OT: How come no post on the flap over the “African” French soccer team? To wit: Trevor Noah (Daily Show host) says that “Africa won the World Cup” after France’s victory. French Ambassador to the US angrily responds (via Twitter) that the team are French, were raised and socialized in France and that France does not recognize “hyphenated” identities. Noah fires back saying that their presence in France is only a product of colonialism, and that while he’s not disputing their Frenchness in the same way the far right does (presumably meaning they have an unlimited right to come to/stay in France and enjoy all the benefits of French citizenship), the idea of a split identity (being both African and French) is perfectly valid. The American left has, predictably, sided with Noah.

We live in a continental-size nation with 325 million people. They are going to take unrelated events from various parts of the nation and tie them together as evidence of a vast conspiracy against blacks.
Yet they will never take the daily black-on-white rape or the weekly black-on-white murder and use it as proof of any hostility blacks feel towards whites. No, every instance of black-on-white crime is treated as a one-off event completely unrelated to any other instance of black-on-white violent crime, and thus no pattern exists. Said crimes are only recorded in the local news where only a small percentage of Americans see it, and when they do, are completely ignorant of the fact that the same is happening in a vast portion of the nation.
The power of the press lies in both what they decide to promote and what they decide to not promote. I can see a media outlet having certain biases. The trouble is all of them have similar biases on most issues.

It’s because we have elections around the corner in November, and our state-controlled media is trying to help the democrats win by ginning up anti-white racial animus. The internet is definitely helping things along with racist outfits like the Young Turks. It’s also not surprising that these propaganda outfits ignore similar videos of non-whites attacking whites, like that video of a brown guy snatching a white kid’s MAGA hat and dumping coke on him.
It’s a get out the vote effort. Turn-out is usually low for mid-terms, so the side that is most energized usually wins.
They did the same thing running up to the 2014 mid terms and the 2016 election. That explains BLM and their treatment of Trump. Didn’t work then. They are hoping it will now…but long term it will just result in more and more whites voting republican. This isn’t the country I grew up in anymore, and it’s one I want nothing to do with.

This is what started to bother me about immigration in the early 00s before I even became woke to the economic drawbacks. With the post-1965 immigrants they’re always Something-Americans or “I’m American but….”

Think about it–which news and opinion stories are white people (the majority of readers of major media brands) most likely to give clicks on a recurring daily basis? Guynn also retcons the Rodney King incident– baldly stating that “the officers were not convicted” without mentioning that they were convicted in a second trial and sent to prison for two-and-a-half years– and without mentioning that Rodney King was actually a dangerous criminal, a convicted robber who was drunk and high when he led the Highway Patrol and LAPD on a long, extremely dangerous (to bystanders as well as participants) high-speed chase before he violently resisted arrest– yielding the videotape which made him famous, because it showed the police officers struggling to subdue King and striking him with their batons as they did.

The 'new social norm' violation is calling the cops. If the conduct in question goes unnoticed by the police, it is simply to be allowed. Like the tree in the wood that fell: No one heard it, so it didn't make a sound. Therefore, if the police didn't see it, it didn't happen.

I noted this elsewhere back during the Duke lacrosse fiasco. Namely, white men do not rape black women--based on crime victim reports. None, zero, nada. You can link to the data on the DOJ crime statistics pages, yet people find it completely incongruous due to the propaganda the media push.
As a note, during the Obama administration, DOJ stopped publishing a lot of crime data by race, and made a hash of inter-racial data reports. I'm not current on where it now stands.

I noted this elsewhere back during the Duke lacrosse fiasco. Namely, white men do not rape black women–based on crime victim reports. None, zero, nada. You can link to the data on the DOJ crime statistics pages, yet people find it completely incongruous due to the propaganda the media push.

I think it is by smell. It is pretty common for former shelter dogs (“Rescue Dogs™”) to have an animus against blacks, for the simple reason that the overwhelming majority of shelter dogs were bred by blacks for dog fighting or property guarding or just general big man-ism in the ‘hood, so aggression around blacks is what they were raised for.

I guess I’m a bit of a “permit Patty” myself; I’ve complained more than once to San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit station agents (via phone) about people smoking or eating on the platform as they await a train. (And I’m not talking about chewing gum, I’m talking about a Sloppy Joe sandwich precipitating sauce, soon to be taken onto the train where it’ll make a seat even oilier and yuckier than it already is.)
I’m not expecting any kind of police response. All I’m hoping for is that the station agent go on the public address system and remind people that smoking and eating are prohibited. Usually, that’s what happens. At other times, the station agent asks me for a detailed description of the person, which seems silly since “someone smoking” should be specific enough.
People don’t remember a lot of things, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to function in the morning.

SWPLs call the police to mediate antisocial behavior being engaged in by blacks because any sort of direct engagement risks a disproportionate, unprovoked, violent reaction.
Incidentally, “keeping the peace” is a core function of the police, so I don’t see a legitimate objection to having the authorities mediate a possible public breach of the law (even if minor). Self-help is frowned upon in Civilized societies.
White people are more likely to take the matter up with other white people outside of a report to the police in my experience, likely because there is far less risk of a disproportionate violent reaction or threats of violence.
It seems like a lot of black people perceive neutral enforcement of minor health/order/safety regulations some form of “picking on” them for some reason. I wonder if there isn’t a correlation between a mix of low IQ and high self-esteem and feelings of persecution as the result of rule enforcement. This is a sense I get about teachers complaints about teaching in schools populated by blacks – a reluctance to abide minimum necessary standards of classroom behavior (sitting in the desk and not talking while the teacher is lecturing), with wholly disproportionate reactions and expressions of persecution in response to attempts at rule enforcement. Naturally, the teachers are fighting a losing battle, so when D’Qwantavious is told to sit down and shut up (where sitting down and shutting up isn’t always the norm) it feeds into feelings of persecution.

When I lived in Santa Monica in 1981, blacks did a lot of the fishing off the Santa Monica pier and similar spots.
Los Angeles blacks tend to be more from Louisiana and East Texas, where fishing is big.
It’s another reason why SoCal is surprisingly ardent about high school and college football. The train lines brought a lot of people here from places like Baton Rouge and Beaumont, where football is huge.

There was not a lack of reports to the police, social services, or media. The distinguishing feature of Rotherham is that the reports did not propagate.
A news story or a report to the authorities is like a virus or meme, and its key property is how infective it is. If somebody hears the story, how many other people do they tell? If on average they tell more than one, awareness of the story will grow exponentially. If less than one, awareness will decrease exponentially, and the story will quickly die. A report to the authorities may be processed, or it may be spiked on one of the many desks it must cross.
It comes down to what people want to hear. Nobody wants to hear that there is nothing much we can do to improve the situation of underachieving minorities. It is more comforting to hear that minorities are oppressed by badwhites, by people who do things that we goodwhites would never do. Throw in some allusions to Jim Crow and slavery, and suddenly we feel powerful again! We are agents of change, and we can make things right by socking it to the badwhites … for example by voting against Donald Trump.
So after years of being inundated with neo-Orwellian admonitions of “if you see something, say something”, we now get the appended part of the message “…..if you a racist. Otherwise, stop snitchin, Casper!”
Also: I haven’t been paying much attention to the fast-dying newspaper business, but wasn’t USA TODAY widely known as a boring, white-bread, “McNewspaper” – since when did they get so woke?

Both victims were black. This factor has contributed a racial aspect to the incidents akin to that in other cases of alleged police brutality having special focus on blacks.
The obvious, and least offensive explanation is that neighborhoods largely populated by blacks tend to have high crime rates, so police (and police dogs) are more frequently present in them.
However, there's another question - how can dogs be racist?
Canine vision is supposed not to be acutely color-sensitive, and more attuned to motion than anything. On the other hand, dogs have a very acute sense of smell. Could they learn to distinguish negroes from whites by smell? My Dad told me a story of a business conference for the major British company of which he was director holding a conference in Switzerland. The group of company country heads took a day out to go up a cable car to a Swiss mountain top. Upon exiting the cable car the only black delegate – from Zimbabwe – was singled out by an Alsatian dog a few metres away, it unhesitatingly went straight for the black guy.

It seems like a lot of black people perceive neutral enforcement of minor health/order/safety regulations some form of "picking on" them for some reason. I wonder if there isn't a correlation between a mix of low IQ and high self-esteem and feelings of persecution as the result of rule enforcement. This is a sense I get about teachers complaints about teaching in schools populated by blacks - a reluctance to abide minimum necessary standards of classroom behavior (sitting in the desk and not talking while the teacher is lecturing), with wholly disproportionate reactions and expressions of persecution in response to attempts at rule enforcement. Naturally, the teachers are fighting a losing battle, so when D'Qwantavious is told to sit down and shut up (where sitting down and shutting up isn't always the norm) it feeds into feelings of persecution.Replies: @AndrewR
CNN has an article today complaining about a black guy in SF who had the cops called on him while opening his new business. I sympathized with him until he framed it as “you feel disrespected when four armed guys come up on you and you’re not armed.” I am not making this up.

Must be in a minority here in that I’d rather live in a poor black neighborhood than one populated by petty snitches. They’re quite common in the UK and do tend to be white, lower-middle class and obese:they’re quite a common stock character in films/TV. A degree of chaos and disregard for ridiculous rules is healthy as long as it’s not excessive. Did everyone here from the states who’s old enough always obey that stupid 55mph speed limit before it was repealed ?
Of course the three media’s attempt to bring race into this is silly, but then, as a non-yank, racial politics over there seems absolutely toxic (not that this will prevent it being imported into the UK with a 2-3 year time lag).

It is the hidden cost of ripping women from their homes and putting them to work. Those mothers and grandmothers, staying home to raise their kids, provided a hidden infrastructure to American life. In stable, healthy societies, women maintain the social organizations and the social life of the community. When women are working ten hours a day at an office, that social work does not get done, so something fills the void. That has been the sewage of popular culture, along with state provided stand-ins for the parents.
Traditional sex roles also work as a bulwark against mischief. Fifty years ago, even public schools in poor areas could expect plenty of mothers volunteering to help with various school projects. They would also be the main labor pool at the church and other voluntary community organizations. It’s hard to corrupt these organization when mothers and grandmothers, people with skin in the game, are there to make sure those organizations serve their interests. Take away the mothers and the degenerates run wild.
