From my new column in Taki’s Magazine:

It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

Steve Sailer

May 25, 2022

On this, the second anniversary of the death of George Floyd, the evidence is now overwhelming: American elites have blood on their hands for their hysterical response to a local police blotter incident that has since brought about many thousands of incremental dead bodies on the pavement. The Floyd fiasco has been the domestic policy equivalent of the Iraq invasion: a massive, self-inflicted national wound.

The proof is in the simultaneous eruption, once the great and the good turned sharply against the police during the mostly peaceful protests, in not just black-on-black shootings, but also in black traffic fatalities. It turns out that cops being made afraid to pull over black reckless drivers and jaywalkers leads more blacks to drive badly and/or pack a pistol.

Here’s a graph I drew up of the monthly per-capita rate of deaths by homicide and motor vehicle accidents from 2014 to 2020. I set the non-Hispanic white average of 2010–2014 to one so that you can easily see the racial ratios. Try to pick out when the “racial reckoning” that is being celebrated today began:

Read the whole thing there.

  1. Feeling 2016 energy. At that time there was a tremendous educational and communications effort, which can be represented by the pol book mega and memecraft, in part because there was an awareness of a terrible need to explain.
Now the only people who don’t see how objectively awful these rulers are, are not going to listen to anything anyway. Biden has proven his own illegitimacy, and beyond that his lack of fitness to rule. Biden defenders are left with “it’s the fault of Putin, that guy Biden’s not capable of dealing with!”

The federal agent who counseled the Buffalo shooter used the online handle “Saint Sandman.”

This is far more heinous and dangerous than 99% of Steve’s readers dare to let themselves contemplate. (“Protective stupidity).

This local investigation by Buffalo authorities will be stopped soon, with violence.

Is it not misleading to characterize the protests as having been “mostly peaceful”?

It is technically true that they were mostly peaceful, but is it nonetheless misleading to readers and for purposes of the historical record for anyone who may reference your article in the future?

  3. OT. I know a couple of people who’ve taken Ukrainian women and kids into their homes – round here, the posher the village, the more Ukrainian flags – but for some inexplicable reason, no one wants to give free rein in their house to Roma gypsies.

    https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/may/25/they-wont-accept-us-roma-refugees-forced-to-camp-at-prague-train-station

Prague’s central railway station seems a picture of normality amid warm spring sunshine and the return of legions of tourists, who had been largely absent at the height of Covid. On the platform one weekday morning, two German sightseers gaze curiously at the statue of Sir Nicholas Winton, the British stockbroker who helped 669 mostly Jewish children escape from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia on the eve of the second world war.

Yet just yards away, hundreds of Roma people are sheltering in the only place available to them since they joined the millions of Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion.

Unlike other Ukrainians who have been offered refugee visas, these families have found they have nowhere to go and no one who wants them.

Heorhii Stan, 37, originally from Odesa, was preparing to travel to Vienna with his four children to collect his wife after successfully applying for protected status in the Czech Republic.

Shouldn’t he be back in Odessa, defending Ukraine’s major port against This Decade’s Hitler?

College teachers, educational administrators, lawyers, and corporation executives are (with some exceptions) intelligent people who own property. A majority are white and a majority are still male in segments 1, 3, and 4. We can be assured that the overwhelming majority of people in the first two occupational segments, and a majority of the third, invest in stupid and destructive notions about social life in all its dimensions. There are a stupefying number in category four who seem to have empty heads which they allow to be filled with the bilge pumped out by HR and corporate communications. 5. Much as I find Mr. Sailer’s theory plausible on its face, it seems to me that his first graph undercuts his argument. The line of black homicides starts rising in February 2020 and, most importantly, shows no change in slope in May, which Mr. Sailer fixes as the moment when the trouble starts. If Floyd’s death was the trigger, (1) why is there no change in slope in May? and (2) why does the curve turn down so clearly just a couple months later?

    • Replies: @J.Ross
    @Tono Bungay

It actually started before 2016. The general chaos, the de facto legalization of violent crime in blue cities, was originally a purely political act to humiliate Trump. Trump's inauguration was beset by angry violent leftists, none of whom were punished in any way. These people re-coalesced around perceived right-wing targets such as speakers at universities. Some latter day Alinsky realized that being purely political was a vulnerability, plus that allies were available, and made it racial. Before you could easily criticize them but now you must prove you're not a racist. There was a season of toppling of statues, which continues but no longer as the primary focus. But few blacks cared about toppling statues, and many responded well to the perception that the police were hunting them for sport, so the discreet set of left-wing professional riot organizers moved from protesting democratic processes to protesting statues to protesting police. Their friends in power restricted police response and created zones of true lawlessness. And two unstable young men looked at this mad season of free crime and made a perfectly logical conclusion. After this line the lyingpress begins to pay attention.

  9. In the aftermath of the mostly peaceful protests has there been any change in the number of blacks killed by police? That was the raison d’etre of black lies matter. There sure are a lot more blacks in TV ads, which is a very small number of beneficiaries for the number of deaths.

  10. After the recent subway murder in NY, this was pointed-out: While one’s chance of being murdered going to work has increased from one in a zillion to ten in a zillion, the daily chance of being hassled, or frightened on the subway has skyrocketed to, well, near-certainty. I think this principle can be applied to graphing racial-reckoning results. many thousands of incremental dead bodies on the pavement

Is less than 1% of deaths due to Covid and attendant tragedies of the last 2+ years. When a society undergoes such a large upheaval (and the attendant millions who are disabled and can no longer earn a living), many other smaller tragedies follow in the wake. This racial reckoning may be attributable to that rather than police politics.

  15. A pretty large share of the whites who rule the Democratic party (and therefore our cities) have little to no experience with people from a different social strata, particularly blacks – all the blacks they know went to the same schools, run in the same professional circles, etc. They sincerely believe the “hooker with a heart of gold” schtick of Pretty Woman applies to the urban minority masses – that underneath it all, there’s really no difference between people than some are privileged and others have bad luck. At the same time, lower class whites are pond scum that love Jesus, humping their sisters, and smoking meth, probably all at once. This bubble effect makes it impossible for the ruling class to govern sensibly.

    That’s not really true.

The mayors mayors staff city council critters and their staff state legislatures and Congress critters and their staffs who rule the big nasty black cities live in those cities. And they experience daily life in those cities. Especially the city council critters county supervisors state legislators and congress critters who are required to live in the districts they represent. No matter how nasty a ghetto it is.

They don’t ride around in limousines all the time. Neither do their spouses and children. Paul and Nancy Pelosi’s kids took city buses around town. And that was when the dangerous black ghetto Fillmore was a lot closer to the Pelosi neighborhood than it is now.

No one in or near a big city could escape the Floyd riots. Expensive zip code towns Santa Monica and Beverly Hills were looted as badly as stores in Los Angeles. Safe , secure and expensive Palo Alto Ca was looted.

The mayors council county supervisors state legislators and Congress critters live in the cities in the districts they represent. And since they live there, they know what’s going on.

It’s the brainwashed by liberal propaganda since the day they started kindergarten to their master’s degree idiot suburban Whites who vote these big city mayors and state legislators and Congress critters into state and national office.

The big city politicians live in the big cities. And they’re as aware of the problems as everybody. But they pretend there are no problems.

When I was a Probation Officer an 80 year old woman was knocked down by 2 savage 12 year old black kids. Broke her hip and femur and was bedridden the rest of her life. Her grandson was one of the more liberal negro loving county supervisors. Didn’t change his negro criminal lover anti police views at all.
The 2 savages that disabled her for life were bussed into the once excellent local middle school from their neighborhood middle school the absolute worst middle school in the city.

That lady was just one of the hundreds of thousands of victims of Brown vs Topeka. It wasn’t just the school kids and teachers . It was also the neighbors. Savages bussed into the neighborhood who left school after an hour and rampaged through the area.

The big city democrats know what’s going on. Even if they or family members aren’t victimized by black criminals they know all about the crime in their cities.

. Rahm Emmanuel is an Israeli citizen who worked for Obama from the beginning. He was elected Mayor of Chicago. Lived in expensive Lakeview North side neighborhood. His teen age son was robbed and pushed around by 2 black kids. While Emmanuel was Mayor. Didn’t change Emmanuel one bit. At least outwardly.

The big city politicians know. But groveling to black criminals and Jewish donors and media who are very pro black criminal is the way to power. So they are all anti police anti victim of crime and pro black criminal.

You can’t live in a big city without knowing about crime. Especially the last 2 years. Seattle Portland are worse than any California city And the politicians continue groveling to black criminals and Jewish media and donors.

This bubble effect makes it impossible for the ruling class to govern sensibly.

This "bubble effect" is solidified by the fact that these people are never held accountable or mocked, called out, whatever you call it, for their disastrous decision.

Their media just ignores embarrassing stuff until it becomes too obvious, and then they blame it on COVID or label it a "right wing meme/trope" or "conspiracy theory," as if merely slapping this descriptive language to the phenomenon makes it go away.

The late night chat shows don't mock them either, so when a would-be Supreme Court Justice says she doesn't know what a woman is, this potential comedy gold gets left un-mined because it makes the bubble-dwellers look stupid. Now, it's gotten so bad they're turning to outright censorship
    , @Alfa158
    @Arclight

Well that’s the thing though; as long as you continue to govern anyway, there is really no imperative to govern sensibly. The important thing is power, that’s the goal and if even the worst policies don’t weaken your grip on power then they aren’t a problem. Hitler didn’t suffer from his disastrous policies until the Red Army had his bunker surrounded. The Whites who rule us aren’t going to suffer from the effects of their beliefs until they are being attacked inside their Upper West Side co-ops. The occasional knock-out game or mugging on the sidewalk outside hasn’t been enough.

    , @Jack D
    @Arclight

have little to no experience with people from a different social strata, particularly blacks

I don't believe this. Many Ivy and other top universities are located in big cities where there are plenty of feral blacks. Either you learn how to properly avoid such blacks or you don't survive college. Goodwhites are fully aware of black dysfunction - they just choose to ignore it and blame everything on whitey. They betray their knowledge with their revealed preferences (choosing to live in a way that insulates them from contact with ghetto blacks) and with their media displays (for example, on TV commercials for burglar alarms, the burglars are not 13% black or 50% black, they are 100% white, which reveals that the writers know about black crime and are covering it up).

They don't believe that blacks have agency so whatever blacks do is really white people's fault. (Just yesterday there was a big long piece in the NYTimes about how the reason that Haiti is a hellhole is that the French government forced the Haitians to pay reparations to the former plantation owners for their lost property. The fact that blacks are incapable of self government had nothing to do with it. Haiti would be Wakanda if only they didn't have to pay those reparations.) In Steve's formulation, blacks are above criticism but beneath agency.

  16. It’s a nice tight summary of the same thing you’ve been writing about for months now. Maybe fit to be copied and pasted all over?

I remember the general feeling when these riots started but not all the details. The question I have is whether the serious calls for defunding the police by people who were in a real position to do so were made even before the big looting/rioting/arson phase started or were they a response to that, as in, “we’d better give them what they want now or the rest of the whole city will get burned down?”

Once the black looters and their antifa Commie advance team got this going, I think a lot of the young black guys saw this as a video game come to life. It comes more naturally when you are not the guy who will be responsible for rebuilding anything – much easier to destroy than to build. This GTA video game mentality seems to have stayed with these guys to some degree.

    ~~

    Editor advice:

Still, in March 2020, blacks were 8.7 times more likely to die by homicide than whites in 2010–2014, then 10.2 times in April, both in the normal range since the Great Awokening. With the huge eruption in violence in late May following Floyd’s death, the ratio hit 12.6 (the first time the black death-by-homicide rate exceeded 12 since 9/11), followed by 14.4 in June, a record 15.5 in July, and remained above 13 for the rest of the year.

I did think the lead clause here is a bit confusing. I get exactly what you are doing. I.e. normalized, the 2010-2014 white homicide victimization rate set to 1. (Routine stuff in the physics biz.) Yet I still thought it read clunky. Perhaps a separate sentence that also serves to remind normie readers of the normalization you are doing. Or maybe just the simple edition of “were” for normie readability, comprehension.

“… more likely to die by homicide than whites were in 2010-2014, then 10.2 times …”

    ~~

Anyway, great stuff. You’ve done yeoman “the emperor is an a*hole getting more of us killed” work.

  24. The graphs are persuasive.

Can you give a more precise estimate (than “many thousands”) of the number of extra black deaths, by homicide and traffic fatality? The figures would make clear that the trend identified by the statistics is not a small detail, but large enough to demand attention.

The death toll (so far) may exceed that of 9/11.

  25. And here’s a taste of thing to come. You’ll only get to taste f you’re chipped.

Unfortunately there is huge collateral damage for just about everyone else. Increased crime, higher prices, higher taxes, decreased quality of life...

  27. A couple of minor points:

    1) When

    the mostly peaceful protests

appears like that instead of with quotation marks:

    the “mostly peaceful” protests

readers not familiar with you might not catch the sarcasm and think that you really are endorsing the BS CNN line.

I mention this because I look for level-headed, objective, data-driven, jargon-free articles I can share with normies who otherwise swim in the MSM bubble, and this Takimag article fits the bill—except for seeming to endorse mostly peaceful protests.

Alternatively, the words “mostly peaceful” could hyperlink back to that article where you quantified how many of the protests were actually riots, which I can’t seem to find right now.

    2) In a similar vein, as a rhetorical device, it would be handy to have a single number at the end: the total number of additional dead because of the Racial Reckoning. We all agree the elites have American blood on their hands. Okay, so how much blood?

The elites want everyone to focus on a dozen or two very particular deaths. It’d be nice to have the data-backing to respond, “A dozen deaths? Hey, when are you going to fix the #,### deaths you caused since 5/25/2020?!?”

  28. Those graphs prove one thing conclusively: Blacks are far less likely to die violently, either through homicide or vehicular accidents, during Black History Month.

Obviously, the solution to ensuring Black Lives Matter Enough Not To End Them Needlessly is to make every month Black History Month.

Exactly....these democratic leaders need the Black votes and Jewish support. This is the reason they govern as they do, but avoid living near Blacks and send their kids to private schools. They seek power and obtain power by accepting the donor money. They fear being blacklisted so will never reveal their true beliefs about Blacks and crime.

This bubble effect makes it impossible for the ruling class to govern sensibly.

This “bubble effect” is solidified by the fact that these people are never held accountable or mocked, called out, whatever you call it, for their disastrous decision.

Their media just ignores embarrassing stuff until it becomes too obvious, and then they blame it on COVID or label it a “right wing meme/trope” or “conspiracy theory,” as if merely slapping this descriptive language to the phenomenon makes it go away.

The late night chat shows don’t mock them either, so when a would-be Supreme Court Justice says she doesn’t know what a woman is, this potential comedy gold gets left un-mined because it makes the bubble-dwellers look stupid. Now, it’s gotten so bad they’re turning to outright censorship

  32. The connection between the mostly peaceful protests against law and order and the rise in murder and road mayhem is obvious when you stop and think about it: An active police presence discourages bad behavior.

But, two years ago today, practically nobody at the top of our society stopped to think.

The goals are related to amassing power and wealth. Sacrificing several thousand members of the lower classes to help achieve these goals is nothing to them. They understand we are developing a class of citizens who are unemployable and a complete drag on society, but unwilling to do anything meaningful to turn them back into productive citizens, even if that could be accomplished.

  33. From the point of view of the Democratic Party leadership it was a good idea.

Didn’t Nancy Pelosi say there would be “collateral damage” getting rid of Trump?
    That was no metaphor.

They got what they wanted out of it and would do it again.

Electing Obama is the kind of thing that good whites might plausibly convince themselves was “a good idea at the time”–along the lines of “we’ll let blacks know they are ‘part of the family’ and give them this role model … and maybe this will improve racial relations, cool racial tensions, and lead to better behavior. (And compared to electing the reckless, hideous John McCain, not unreasonable.)

This was very, very different. Responsible people understand the importance of rule-of-law. And this was not plausibly cooling racial antagonisms but fanning them. Heck blasting them with oxygen and acetylene.

But it was in line with a clear trend. What I have noticed in the last decade is the media Jews and their fellow travelers are just much more open about their hatreds and have been doing a lot of “premature celebration” of the Great Replacement. (The “conservative” columnist ‘Bret Stephens’ comes to mind. But several other “conservatives” do the same shtick. And the “liberals” are even worse.”) Their writing has taken on the tone that whitey is through, and–not being bolted down people–they just can’t wait to tell you about and do a victory dance. This is why the Trump candidacy and then victory sent them flying into incoherent rage. They thought we were already finished. Were not prepared for a last flicker of life.

The Floyd OD was perfect. They had their cartoon flyover country goyim–in uniform, only the SS lighting strikes missing–oppressing their poor innocent stand-in minority. This was a moment to stick it to those people (i.e. my people) once and for all. If it trashed America for a generation … who cares. They simply do not care.

Prudent, responsible people, of course, do not act like this. But these people–while smart–are not prudent people. They are not, “I’ll farm this field, this year, and next year, and the year after and eventually pass it on to my son” steward people. They are “I made a killing today!” marketplace people.

And now the “good white” remnants of the old establishment–while less naturally crazy–are too brain addled and worried about being called a “racist!”. At best, they’ll dither for a bit looking at the latest crazy … but then almost always dutifully submit, babbling about “raised awareness” and then at least soothing themselves with the thoughts that they are not one of those people–the official evil bad goyim. They are good thinking, repenting goyim.

There is simply no way that anyone responsible, who cares about the long term future of America, could think more lying to blacks about their “oppression” and cancelling the “rule of law” was “a good idea”. No this was an outpouring of deep ethnic and racial animus.

And any actual American should recognize it for what it was, adjust their priors and think clearly about how to save their children’s future. Hint: “Getting the hell away from these people.”

    2020- 87,000,000

The fertile white population has declined in absolute numbers. There are 33 million less fertile whites today than 30 years ago.

The number of whites declined by 9 million since 2010, but the number of whites under the age of 40 actually declined by more than 10 million. We are losing a million fertile whites per year. Half of this decline was in the number of whites under the age of 18....the white population is declining rapidly, due to low fertility rates combined with miscegenation...12% of black babies have a white mother like Obama.

The post-Floyd murder upslope is large, but the upslope for being terrified or hassled by some reckoning-emboldened thugs in daily life would be gigantic.

In fact, we’ve known for centuries the best ways to keep blacks and the rest of us safe – exemplary punishments, curfews, tight restrictions on movement and manual labor for the knuckleheads; encouraging religious practice, teaching useful skills and civilizing education for the good ones. I would also add that realizing that black society is a caste-based society and coopting the upper and merchant castes would also go a long way toward assuring tranquility.

And now the "good white" remnants of the old establishment--while less naturally crazy--are too brain addled and worried about being called a "racist!". At best, they'll dither for a bit looking at the latest crazy ... but then almost always dutifully submit, babbling about "raised awareness" and then at least soothing themselves with the thoughts that they are not one of those people--the official evil bad goyim. They are good thinking, repenting goyim.

There is simply no way that anyone responsible, who cares about the long term future of America, could think more lying to blacks about their "oppression" and cancelling the "rule of law" was "a good idea". No this was an outpouring of deep ethnic and racial animus.

And any actual American should recognize it for what it was, adjust their priors and think clearly about how to save their children's future. Hint: "Getting the hell away from these people."

Half of this decline was in the number of whites under the age of 18….the white population is declining rapidly, due to low fertility rates combined with miscegenation…12% of black babies have a white mother like Obama.

A pretty large share of the whites who rule the Democratic party (and therefore our cities) have little to no experience with people from a different social strata, particularly blacks - all the blacks they know went to the same schools, run in the same professional circles, etc. They sincerely believe the "hooker with a heart of gold" schtick of Pretty Woman applies to the urban minority masses - that underneath it all, there's really no difference between people than some are privileged and others have bad luck. At the same time, lower class whites are pond scum that love Jesus, humping their sisters, and smoking meth, probably all at once. This bubble effect makes it impossible for the ruling class to govern sensibly.

I don’t believe this. Many Ivy and other top universities are located in big cities where there are plenty of feral blacks.

They don’t believe that blacks have agency so whatever blacks do is really white people’s fault. (Just yesterday there was a big long piece in the NYTimes about how the reason that Haiti is a hellhole is that the French government forced the Haitians to pay reparations to the former plantation owners for their lost property. They’ll not just pay for the private school bus. They’ll pay for the private school minibus that drops kids right off at the door. And the driver waits till the kids are in the building. But they’ll never admit it’s dangerous for their kids to use public transit. Or walk 4 blocks with their friends to Walgreens for school supplies and an ice cream.

Was on the phone with my son in San Francisco. Downtown is a human zoo. Every specimen of human weirdo. Then out to the beach and there’s several families of gypsies sitting on the curbs begging. Maybe refuges from Ukraine. Finally the beach and normal people and their dogs.

Liberals know because they are city people. Grow up in the all White suburbs. Then Yale or Columbia USC Temple UPenn university of Chicago University of S California in the worst ghettos in the country.

And they make their money in and around the cities.

The only wealthy people who aren’t aware are farmers who live in their farms. And go to their state agricultural schools which are in safe small towns. Or were until those same farmers started importing Hispanic cheap labor

The lockdowns created the conditions for civil unrest , with millions of young Americans out of work with no school or social outlets available. The lent up frustration resulted in almost 1,000 protests, since it was the only way for Americans to gather socially , due to the lockdowns. Much as I find Mr. Sailer's theory plausible on its face, it seems to me that his first graph undercuts his argument. The line of black homicides starts rising in February 2020 and, most importantly, shows no change in slope in May, which Mr. Sailer fixes as the moment when the trouble starts. If Floyd's death was the trigger, (1) why is there no change in slope in May? and (2) why does the curve turn down so clearly just a couple months later?

    Replies: @J.Ross

It actually started before 2016. The general chaos, the de facto legalization of violent crime in blue cities, was originally a purely political act to humiliate Trump. Trump’s inauguration was beset by angry violent leftists, none of whom were punished in any way. These people re-coalesced around perceived right-wing targets such as speakers at universities. Some latter day Alinsky realized that being purely political was a vulnerability, plus that allies were available, and made it racial. Before you could easily criticize them but now you must prove you’re not a racist.

  65. In other news, something that pretty much everybody else here already knows, but is worth repeating…

The GOP has the theoretical potential to do what the Democrats did in the 1930s and practically lock the opposition out of power for a generation. It will take them playing their cards right and some luck, but I really do see this on the table. The White House has woken up to the danger they face politically, but shows no signs of being able to do damage control. If anything, the incoherent, conflicting messages coming from the White House share only one thing in common: the willingness to sacrifice most Americans to the whims of the powerful. And that’s something voters can detect.

However… one of those cards that needs to be played right is guys like Romney being publicly repudiated. Ignoring him is not going to be enough, especially after the Kushner experience that may well have cost Trump the White House in 2020. The party of Bush and Romney was repudiated multiple times by the public. It isn’t going to be embraced now, especially after the neocons and MBAs threw in their lot with the woke.

Put succinctly: the worst enemy of the new GOP is the old GOP. The Democrats are doubling down on their nucleus at the expense of everybody else. The nucleus will never vote for the Republican Party, no matter what. That “everybody else”, for the most part, are willing to consider the new GOP, but not the old one. Ambiguity might be enough to be the lesser of two evils for now, but it is not going to win true, consolidated power, the kind that will be needed for years on end to change things permanently.

(As an aside, I find it particularly revealing that the only demographic in society that truly supports intervention in Ukraine are those in their 60s or older. When you get down to it, Americans are by nature an isolationist people-hawkish, messianic even, but isolationist. It takes a consistent external threat to change that. Like, say, the USSR for 40 years, hence that polling result among those whose formative experiences were the peak of the Cold War. Just like Germany returning back to being Mitteleuropa, America was turning back to what it was supposed to be in the early 1990s… and DC artificially hijacked that process, with disastrous consequences.)

There has been a marked coarsening since 1990. The Cold War era (1945 - 1990) was unique in combining rising standard of living with a single focused national purpose. After 1990, that purpose went away and internal divisions, normal for a large diverse country, started showing up. It also coincided with a somewhat plateauing (and for some segments of population lowering) of living standards - a combination of global competition, trade agreements, technology, immigration etc., We saw this fissure grow and expand in Clinton years. Further exacerbated by 9/11, wars and Bush Presidency. I think 2008 was when the wheels started falling off, after the financial crisis. That made abnormalcy the new normal and things have gone inexorably to the dogs. 2020 was a new further downward push and it is only reasonable to expect worse. The question is, will there be some betterment in years future or will we continue to have new destabilizing shocks.

There are a stupefying number in category four who seem to have empty heads which they allow to be filled with the bilge pumped out by HR and corporate communications. have little to no experience with people from a different social strata, particularly blacks

But without the lockdowns , which had closed all the schools and put millions out of work, the death of a George Floyd would have been similar to the reaction to Michael Brown , a few protests with one riot in Minneapolis….instead of the 900 protests and 500 riots across America. The lockdowns created the conditions for civil unrest , with millions of young Americans out of work with no school or social outlets available. The lent up frustration resulted in almost 1,000 protests, since it was the only way for Americans to gather socially , due to the lockdowns. Without the lockdowns we would not have had so many Americans protesting and rioting because they would be in school or working or going to sporting events and bars, concerts , etc…

There has been a marked coarsening since 1990. The Cold War era (1945 – 1990) was unique in combining rising standard of living with a single focused national purpose. After 1990, that purpose went away and internal divisions, normal for a large diverse country, started showing up. It also coincided with a somewhat plateauing (and for some segments of population lowering) of living standards – a combination of global competition, trade agreements, technology, immigration etc., We saw this fissure grow and expand in Clinton years. It's a nice tight summary of the same thing you've been writing about for months now. Maybe fit to be copied and pasted all over?

I remember the general feeling when these riots started but not all the details. The question I have is whether the serious calls for defunding the police by people who were in a real position to do so were made even before the big looting/rioting/arson phase started or were they a response to that, as in, "we'd better give them what they want now or the rest of the whole city will get burned down?"

Once the black looters and their antifa Commie advance team got this going, I think a lot of the young black guys saw this as a video game come to life. It comes more naturally when you are not the guy who will be responsible for rebuilding anything - much easier to destroy than to build. This GTA video game mentality seems to have stayed with these guys to some degree.
