‘He was smiling’: Girl, 11, recounts man slicing hijab with scissors

January 12, 2018Khawlah Noman and her brother had only been walking for two minutes when she became aware a man was following them on their way to school Friday morning.
The 11-year-old — a Grade 6 student of Pauline Johnson Junior Public School in Scarborough — and her sibling, Mohammad, were walking along Birchmount Rd., north of Sheppard Ave., around 9 a.m. when the stranger swiped at her blue hijab with a pair of scissors and sliced a 30 cm tear in the headdress.
“I screamed,” Noman said. “The man just ran away. We followed this crowd of people to be safe. He came again. He continued cutting my hijab again. He was smiling.”
Toronto Police describe the man as Asian, in his 20s, with a medium build, around 5-foot-10, with black hair and a moustache. He was wearing glasses, a black hoodie and black pants.
The man fled the scene after the frightening incident. …
Noman’s mom, who also spoke to media at the school Friday afternoon, teared up as she recounted seeing her daughter’s damaged headscarf.
“I came to the school right away,” a visibly upset Saima Samad said. “I’m just so happy she’s safe…It’s just not Canada. I’m so proud to be a Canadian and I feel safe in this community. It’s just, it’s not right. He should get help. This is not who we are.”

Samad said the family has lived in Canada for the 25 years and she grew up here, but she will exercise more caution when her kids walk to school from now on. …
Mom has lived in Canada for a quarter of a century but covers her face in public.
Wearing a hijab, she said, is a sacred part of the Muslim religion.
“It is offensive, obviously,” she said. “We don’t know his intentions. I’m very frustrated and angry. But we believe in peace. I want to give him the message — ‘We’re all in this together and we should live in harmony.’ It’s a multicultural country.”

This has in common with other hate hoaxes that they always go too far, they’re always too detailed, and the details are always sensational.
Let’s not forget the real-life political violence visited upon nominal Trump supporters, like Richard Spencer, Laura Southern and others, many of which are on video: the nearby people do nothing to help — because they’re all extremists who agree with and probably know the attacker, not because society is unfeeling. The attacker himself is not smiling, not gleeful, not taunting with a catchphrase. He’s furtive, painfully aware of the danger of getting caught, slouching and running away. This is what a real street attack looks like, with and without politics. In the hate hoaxes nobody of any background will help because that makes a more dramatic image, and the attacker is celebrating his awful impunity so he struts and declaims.

I’m just spitballing but I’m going to guess that the whole non-event was captured on several cameras between Degrassi and this poor Muslim girl’s home. The Police collected all of the video on the day in question and it either revealed no attack or revealed that the head rag was ripped by the girl or her brother etc. The Police statement is too definitive in concluding that her report of the (non-) incident was false for it to have been anything other than conclusive proof of its falsity. (FWIW, I think this is why there are so many hoaxes that get found out – these people are literally too stupid to know that everything is on camera now).
Which leads me to the next point – judging by the sheer number of these things that turn up to be hoaxes, wouldn’t it be more responsible to allow the police a few days to complete the investigation before having the national shaming exercise? Nobody apoligizes when these hate hoaxes, political ideology shaming ,identity politics, and such are proven to be what they are. Finding sacrificial victims to maintain a cosmic worldview is the very touchtone of irrational tribal village culture. We used to pride ourselves in our millenium-long journey out of superstition, lying, and seeking out heretics to keep the people in line. We didn’t coin the term “witch hunt” for nothing. We have a long literature that cautions about the Convinced seeking witches to burn and monsters to destroy, because we thought we were moving into enligthenment. Legitimizing “feelings” over facts is decadent indulging in what we thought we had left behind.

The girl likely took off her hijab because she doesn’t want to wear it at school. When her stern parents caught her hoodless, the girl blamed it on a made-up hateful villain rather than admit she isn’t attracted to her mother’s style. The parents then went to the police before the girl could admit her fib and the media blew it up. The girl no doubt would rather less outrage from white liberals and more spine.

I wonder what the Asian community thinks. “Asian” in Canada means East Asian. There are huge numbers of Asians and Muslims in Scarborough and they aren’t exactly bosom buddies. They quietly compete with each other for jobs, housing, government perks, university admissions, etc. There are scores of elderly Asian women in Toronto living in subsidized housing while their sons live in mansions. Tons of Muslims are on the dole here as well but they don’t quite game the system as sophisticatedly as the chinks do.
I don’t know what the average height of Canadian Asians is, but I can’t imagine 5’1o” is extremely rare, even if it is taller than average. And while Asians have less facial hair, I think most Asian men can grow mustaches.

Scarborough has Chinese and “South Asian” populations in near parity (19 and 22 percent respectively) among a population that is two-thirds visible minorities per Wikipedia. The six-yo co-hoaxer does register as a subcontinental phenotype to me (Hindu emigres don’t tend to ghettoize so I’d wager the south Asians are mostly or entirely muslim Pakistanis Bangladeshis &c). Canada is a net importer of kkkrazy glue and will have a much harder time keeping them away from one another’s throats than we have.
It might be helpful if our President weighs in the next time there is an egregious hate crime hoax. Obama did with Michael Brown, except he supported the wrong side. Trump should just wait for a black or Muslim on white hoax and then publicly dissect it. A few years ago (actually a year or two before 9/11) I worked next to a young woman who grew up in a Pakistaní family in Toronto. She was dismayed, let’s say, by how socially backward the Pakistaní community in the UK was compared with “back home.” She was a Muslim of course but even the retrograde family she’d married into had no problem with her coming to work dressed normally.
