When I was 17, I was a scruffy-headed biracial black and Jewish teenager, and a furious Louis Farrakhan hater. In the mid-1990s, Farrakhan’s fame and influence was at its height; I had once been thrown out of a middle-school gym class for calling the Nation of Islam leader a racist. His Million Man March, a massive collective act of solidarity and perhaps the most important black event of the decade, had been one of the loneliest days of my young life. I sat in homeroom, one of just a few dozen kids in school, wondering why so many people hated people like me.

Trump likes talking about it because the guilt of the accused and the shamelessness of the cover-up in this case are so bleeding obvious that you’d have to repeatedly hit yourself in the head with a hammer to miss it.

I’ve never been involved with twitter, so maybe there’s a depth to it that someone who’s not involved with it can’t see, but I don’t think I’ve ever read a referenced twitter comment from any political perspective that conveyed any sense of the complexity that usually accompanies reality. That goes for tweets by Trump and conservative tweets, as well, but since the Smollett case has been all over the news for weeks, Trump’s comment regarding it has a context that justifies his straightforward reaction, especially when his sentiment is shared by people like Rahm Emmanuel and David Axelrod.

Trump’s comment is to a specific case, but Adam Serwer’s is narrative based – millions of people are summed up and condemned with a tweet. Of course, Adam believes he can conceal his own narrative by pointing his finger at other people’s supposed narratives.

Today, the rise in anti-Semitism has brought up a lot of memories. I would say that the current climate has provoked a civic impulse in me. So I’m listening to a Baseball Season preview podcast, featuring the beat writer for the Giants, who is a self described tattooed and pink haired feminist. Seattle is a weird case. Its population has grown by about 50% over the last generation, mostly in the last 10 years, and the population has been effectively replaced, so there is no culture to speak of. It isn’t like NYC where working and middle class people have their neighborhoods and networks and can stay in the city. These people have, as a rule, been pushed out. Most of the public servants don’t even live in the city limits these days. It’s been Californiafied, but it lacks the California climate, so it’s kind of miserable.

For all the surrounding natural beauty (which you can’t even see most of the year due to the weather), the neighborhoods look like crap. Houses that are supposedly worth a million bucks are dilapidated, need gardening and a paint job. People drive lousy cars, the traffic is horrible, and there is trash strewn all over the visible public spaces. There are hardly any children, so the parks are instead filled with dogs.

The prices just keep going up, and not just for housing. Groceries are way more expensive than in the rest of the state. The taxes are relentless, with no end in sight.

The problem is essentially that Washington state itself is kind of a mess. Many of the rural parts of the state were devastated by deindustrialization and free trade, and still haven’t recovered. The new jobs have all been concentrated in the Seattle metro area, so there’s a lot of poverty and underemployment, particularly in rural western Washington. Inevitably, the opioid epidemic started taking a big toll there, and many of the addicts end up in Seattle because of the more liberal policy toward drugs/property crime. This I think is why the homeless population has exploded in Seattle — it’s mainly due to economic neglect of the rest of the state combined with the high cost of rent.

It’s kind of sad to me, personally, because I grew up in Seattle and lived there until fairly recently, but I’m relieved that I was able to get out while I still could. Last time I went down it was to visit a cousin and uncle a few months ago, both of whom moved out before I did but were back in town to visit family. My uncle was astonished by the changes, and told me he’d be happy to see the city in the rearview mirror. I felt the same way. It’s strange to visit where you grew up and feel like you dodged a bullet by getting out.
