Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders was born in New York City in 1941, and by 1968 had permanently abandoned the rapidly minoritizing big city for virtually all-white Vermont. From Wikipedia:
In 1964, Sanders graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor of arts degree in political science, married his first wife, Deborah Shiling, and bought a summer home in Vermont. Over the next few years he took various jobs in New York and Vermont and spent several months on an Israeli kibbutz. By 1968, he was living in Vermont year-round.
It’s worth looking at the demographics of New York City from the 1940 to 1970 Censuses:

The nonwhite population of New York City grew by 2.35 million from 1940-1970. Blacks increased by 1.2 million and Hispanics by over 1.0 million. The growth in Puerto Ricans was especially sharp:
| 1940 | 61,463 | +734.6% |
|---|---|---|
| 1950 | 187,420 | +204.9% |
| 1960 | 612,574 | +226.8% |
| 1970 | 817,712 | +33.5% |
In contrast, the non-Hispanic white population of New York City declined by 1.9 million white people from 1940 to 1970, so Bernie had lots of company in white flight.
At the time of Bernie’s first Census in Vermont, in 1970, just how white was Vermont? The Census Bureau’s official report on Vermont in 1970 provides us with this informative graphic:

So, of every 445 people in Vermont two years after Bernie permanently arrived, 443 were white.
Vermont tied South Dakota for the lowest black percentage of any of the 50 states: 0.2%. Vermont was 0.6% Hispanic.
Relative to the rest of the country, not all that much has changed in Vermont during the years Bernie has exercised political power there. Vermont has been the whitest state in the Union for many of Bernie’s years there, although it was second whitest by 0.1% to Maine in 2010.

South Dakota is the second-most Indian (feathers) state after Oklahoma. At least they have experience with some poor minority. The closest thing in Vermont is the frogs of the Northeast Kingdom. Same with Maine and New Hampshire.
Rural South Dakota should have generations of contact with Mexican migrant workers, if North Dakota and Minnesota are any indication.
"Sanders (born September 8, 1941) was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Polish Jewish immigrants. Sanders graduated with a B.A. in political science from the University of Chicago in 1964 and afterwards spent time working on a kibbutz in Israel. Later that year he moved to Vermont where he worked as a writer, documentary producer and researcher."

A lot of those blacks were from Caribbean families (eg Colin Powell’s), and now from West Africa, rather than from internal migration or natural increase. One revealing question on censuses from 1880 on is birthplace of parents.
Also, there is more overlap between “black” and “Hispanic” in NYC than in most of America. Loads of Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and perhaps Mariel Cubans as well.
People call Sanders a socialist, but his views were pretty mainstream in Democratic circles well into the 70s.
I just checked the wiki on NYC, just to see the trend, according to that article, the “non-Hispanic white population” of the biggest city in the US was 33.3% in 2010. Following the trend, it may be less than 30%, now. I had no idea.

Most ethnic conflict is concentrated among the young so white flight is concentrated among parents of young children so the people left behind get disproportionately older. Only the wealthiest neighborhoods are left with standard demographics with lots of kids and young adults.
The percentages in the schools are the real kicker.
Socialist?

Bear in mind that New York City consists of 5 boroughs/counties, but the parts of it most visitors go to, or well-off white people live in (mainly, the lower half of Manhattan and a few gentrified Brooklyn neighborhoods) are mostly white with a splash of Asians. Go to Broadway on the Upper West Side on a Saturday afternoon and the only blacks or Hispanics you’re likely to see are bike delivery guys and the occasional Caribbean nanny.
I go into the city half a dozen times a year, pretty much restricted to the Broadway area, i.e. West Side from about Columbia down to about Port Authority. (That would be 42nd to 125th, about 83 blocks, or a bit over 4 miles of the West Side, for those who don't know the City.) However, I knew it had changed a lot, I remember I went to go get my son at Penn Station in 2004 and while I was waiting I went looking for a bagel in the Herald Square area. Found plenty of delis, but nothing but pita shells. Shoot, I couldn't even find a crisp Kaiser roll. I just had no idea that whites were such a distinct minority in the City overall.
Is that what people really want?
I saw a comment by Syon where he went to the bank in Boston today and the teller had a Mexican flag on her desk. WTF? I, for one, am not particularly concerned about the racial/ethnic mixture in the US, but, if the immigrant growth is as described, then we won't just be looking at "whites" as a minority. We will be looking at "English speakers" as a minority. Do we really want to go down that road? Look what happened in Europe when that happened. I won't be around to see it but don't be surprised if there's a backlash someday. The problem is, the later that comes, the more resentful and reactionary that backlash will be, with very negative results.Replies: @bomag, @Blah
There are hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers in the boroughs who see no need to learn much, if any, English.
Sanders family must be quite wealthy and he very spoiled to have had a ‘summer house’ in Vermont after graduating with a poli sci degree. This was the era before twenty somethings could make millions with an IPO and even the NFL and NBA didn’t pay that much.
All good lefties live white while talking diversity. Wish I had a dollar for the many I’ve met over the years. A guy like Bernie would last less than 24 hours in any real stronghold of diversity.
The state of Israel is a national victim cult, where only jewish people are victim class.
Good line, and so true.
It is funnily ironic to see Sanders bullied by Blacks at his campaign events. All his pushing of the right buttons has bought him no respect; they just see him as Another to be stepped on.
It is a sign of our times that Sanders won't even think of retaliation: "Because of the disrespect shown me, if elected president I will abolish Black history month to send a message."
No, instead he just doubles down on the ass kissing.Replies: @Reg Cæsar
I understand that. I lived in NYC for most of the ’80’s, but rarely went to the outer boroughs.

I'm not sure how much of a backlash can be spooled up.
The organizers and planners for such, the "elites", used to depend on the country to defend them and their station in life. Now they are happy to live in enclaves made possible by modern tech.
Modern tech has also allowed the gigantic welfare state, which has pretty much bought everyone off from revolting.
Demography is destiny, and English speakers are lacking in demographic power at the moment.
But modern tech cuts both ways. In the machine world of the future, these things could change rapidly.
A co-worker lawyer was born and raised in Queens, attended Stuyvesant, went to NYU, then Columbia Law, and STILL speaks English with a pronounced Chinese accent … and she is in her 40s.

Not wealthy at all. Father, a son of immigrant Jews from Poland, was a paint salesman. An interview with the brother Larry says he and Bernie did not have separate bedrooms, yet the apartment in Brooklyn was comfortable and they had enough to eat. The brother stated that both of them arrived at leftist politics not from a sense of helping the underprivileged, because you would have had to have been privileged and they were not.
Bernie bought the house for 2500 dollars, on 85 acres with no electricity. I am sure that was what drove the price down. Even today a house with no services, especially no cable and internet would be quite cheap.
My opinion was that Bernie was wanting to get away from a minority alright, the Jews.
There were over 2.5 million of them in New York in the mid 50s. He married Deborah Shiling in 1964, the daughter of the head of surgery at Mt Sinai, another Jewish girl. She was probably another Jew that wanted to break free of the mold. And they moved into the house together. Maybe the money came from her parents. They divorced after 18 months. She still lives in Vermont and is very much the Jewish Vermont organic Birkenstock liberal. I imagine Bernie was sort of Jewish beta, sort of small and short, and he sexually bored the crap out of Debbie. In many pics, Bernie looks like a Woody Allen Nebbish guy during that period. One account says they never really stayed at the “sugar shack” much but they “traveled through Europe as the Vietnam war was heating up.” Again, the money for that must have come from the wife’s family. Maybe they were sort of down on Bernie’s prospects and talked a lot of crap about him to their daughter. By 1968, it was done and over and she had a new guy and she “bought out Bernie’s share of the property”.
I would say Sanders is very much like a character from a Philip Roth novel, one of the Jews that is a little annoyed with being Jewish, that wants to be like everybody else, and went all 60s, rejecting standard Jewish American life of being a dentist, marrying a nice Jewish girl, moving to Great Neck. That was the motivation for so many Jews to have embraced Socialism, to rip down the prevailing power structure so they could “be a man on the street and a Jew in the home.” Sort of self-loathing Jew.
Bernie is only Jewish when it suits him and when it is useful to play the Shoah card. The entire entry in his Wikpedia bo on his religion says:
“Sanders has said he is “proud to be Jewish”, but “not particularly religious.” Sanders credits his Jewish identity with teaching him “in a very deep way what politics is about,” explaining that “a guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932. He won an election, and 50 million people died as a result of that election in World War II, including 6 million Jews. So what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important.”

As an OK resident, the native Americans here are invisible besides the casinos on the highway. Great example of why border control is important.
If a remake of the 1970s television classic Taxi were made today, the cast would be a lot less White to reflect the racial demographics of New York City cab drivers.. They would probably cast South Asian actors like Mindy Kaling, and Kal Penn. As well as cast the racially ambiguous Cliff Curtis who can pass for South Asian if he gets a good tan.
Cliff Curtis can be be the wise older cab driver who everybody seeks advice from, originally portrayed by Judd Hirsch and Mindy Kaling can be the token female cab driver originally portrayed by Marilu Henner.
The stoner Reverend Jim Ignatowski can played by Snoop Dogg. Kal Penn can play Latka Gravas, the 5 foot 2 Kevin Hart can play a Louie De Palma type role and Tony Banta can be played by a token White guy/real Italian American Mike The Situation Sortentino.

I think you are overpsychoanalyzing it. When a left-wing “free love” male of 23 changes his permanent address to the Canadian border during the Vietnam War the impetus is obvious. Bern was probably sentimentally disposed toward the back-to-the-land self-sufficient ethos too, despite career-transitioning directly into living off other people’s taxes. Also there is some retconned notion here that all American Jews back then in the John Lindsay era were looking to NYC as the Eternal City, a nostalgic proposition Steve’s favorite TV writer Matthew Weiner went to some pains to debunk.
Vermont really is a nice place to live. It has been a skiing/vacationing spot for NYC wealth for a long time. Why wouldn't you want to move there? It's very simple.
It takes 7 hours, at most, to get to Canada from NYC, so it doesn’t make sense to move to the border for a draft dodge.

Since Sanders got married before Johnson rescinded JFK’s 1963 order exempting married men from conscription it seems likely the match was ad hoc (their splitting up in 1966 doesn’t argue against that either). Although she may have stayed on in Vermont I’m guessing she wasn’t wild about the 85-acre no-electricity farm option. Bernie seemed to be more occupied with non-rural Burlington’s scene as well. It may be unfair to call him a career politician since he didn’t actually get elected to anything before 1981. OTOH it’s not totally clear what he did during the 70s but he had plenty of connections before long. Like Howard Dean he possesses the combination of quirks and characteristics that works for that region. It is strange how the union-label shtick appeals to the mystic chords of memory in a place that hasn’t had textile or industrial clout in the last century & is today best known for its dairy subsidies, leaf-peeping tourism, and syrup-labeling laws.

Just after the violent Nakba ethnic cleansing Sanders carried an Uzi on an Israeli kibbutz?

You’re overthinking it. As Ockhaimowitz (heh) says, the guy wanted to be a hippie and he didn’t want to go to Vietnam. Not too hard to figure out.

By the middle part of 1966 married men that had been exempt were being conscripted.

There were no Asians in NYC in 1970?
The sum of the White, Black and Hispanic populations in 1970 is 7,916,494, as opposed to the 7,894,862 listed in the table. Not sure if this (minor) discrepancy is related to the missing Asians.

I left out the Asian and other minor columns so the table could be read on a small screen.
In 1970 in NYC, there were 94,499 Asians (1.2% of the population), versus 1,043,535 Asians in 2010 (12.8%).
On the West coast, I never even heard of Kaiser rolls, there a roll, or a hard roll, was just assumed to be a sourdough roll. Judging from his performance with Black Lives Matter, it’s easy to believe that he went to Vermont to avoid the diversity. They had him running.
