I can’t begin to make sense of what this tweet from Minneapolis is describing? There’s some sort of barricaded No Go zone in Minneapolis in which the victims of the post-apocalyptic endemic violence have to drag themselves out of to be picked up by an ambulance?
Remember when Minneapolis was the most boringly sensible big city in America?
Back in 2005, I found a database by a company that calculates local costs of living for corporations moving employees around the country. There are many cost-of-living databases, but most use rent. This one was aimed at manager-level employees so it included the the cost of buying a house. I then compared the cost of living by state to the median income for a family of four to estimate the standard of living.
Minnesota had, by this measure, the highest standard of living in the U.S., while Hawaii had the lowest and California the next lowest. Obviously, this standard of living measure doesn’t include the climate. People will pay a lot to live in Hawaii or California, while Minnesota had low land prices relative to its prosperity because there is so much flat, habitable land and because it’s so cold.
But it also got me thinking about a side effect of housing costs. One advantage of California’s exorbitant land prices is that they slowly drive out the more troublesome sorts of blacks. In contrast, Minneapolis was cheap enough for George Floyd to move there from even his native Houston, which is famous for its cheap housing.
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/161/old/sense11p.pdf
From what I understand there’s some sort of self-declared “autonomous zone” in Minneapolis, where residents have decided emergency services and other agents of the state cannot enter, and city officials have agreed to comply with their demands, because that’s what functioning, responsible, first world civic authorities do.
In Biden’s America, everyone can get vaccinated against COVID-19 but may have to go outside of your Freedom Zone to meet the paramedic.
Well too bad for Minneapolis. Of course, it’s not the only area that suffers from being attractive to unpleasant people; but the most deserving of it happening.
Minneapolis also screwed its own workers, and screwed them hard. No joke. The Hebrew Immigrant Aid people, the Catholic Knights of Columbus, etc, all subsidized the Hmong, Somalian, Nigerian and whatever other "refugee" that came around. When cost of living jacked up their own workers couldn't afford the hike. And being Americans they got no help.

If I were the Mayor of Minneapolis, I would do what the Mayor of Portland did recently: Decide enough is enough and do some plain speaking without worrying about the Woke.
“Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler on Friday asked residents to help “unmask” the people behind violence at protests in recent weeks, which grew in fervor after police fatally shot a white man at Lents Park.
What he’s saying: “They want to burn, they want to bash, they want to intimidate, they want to assault,” Wheeler said in a Friday video statement, referring to violent protestors. “Our community needs to resume their lives. People need to go back to work. Employers need to be able to reopen.”
“Our job is to unmask them, arrest them, and prosecute them,” he said. “I want to personally thank neighbors, family, friends, and others who have come forward with vital evidence. People know who these criminals are. They know what they’re up to.”
We will have to see what kind of results Portland gets but I assume most of the people of Portland are fed up and will help. Minneapolis doesn’t have the protesting history Portland does so it should be a lot easier for them to take their city back if they’re determined to do it.
Certainly I wish both Minneapolis and Portland luck.

The problem with your final paragraph is that exorbitant housing costs also drives out more interesting types. If everyone is upper-middle class then it becomes boring, staid and homogenous. It further breaks mobility for young people except if they come from rich families. Family formation becomes more difficult.
Instead of throwing the baby out with the bathwater, focus on fixing the issue of crime as a seperate issue. Too many Americans are willing to sacrifice their own standard of living because they are unwilling to face the root causes of crime head-on, on its own.
Cheap housing costs can and should be combined with low crime. Inability to do this is a function of a weak spine.

Well, he was right, but he said that in the early 90's and here we are in 2021 and it's now finally gentrifying. His kids will inherit a nice place, but he had to live with his stuff all locked and gated up for decades. Once, we went to his house in the summer and had drinks on the front porch. The old, wicker furniture out there had chains snaking all through their feet, linking them to the foundation of the house... the only way to keep them from being stolen.
What are these root causes of crime, and how should Americans face them head on?
Mass prosperity was yesterday's dream and we've made a national commitment to prevent it from ever coming back. Indeed. There is no sign of more spine coming.

This is down the street from George Floyd Square.
The intersection where George Floyd died has become a makeshift shrine and also an anarchist commune and crime-ridden hellhole. Remember the CHAZ in Seattle last year? Same thing. Police are afraid to enter, and are apparently being quite open about it. Minneapolis politicians were apparently saying that the problem would be resolved by the Chauvin verdict; apparently, it hasn’t. Quelle surprise.

Minnesota’s not just cold in the winter, but really hot and humid in the summer. I was there for work one August (IIRC) earlier this century when one of the Vikings’ offensive linemen dropped dead from heatstroke.
That said, the people I met there liked it. One was a US Bank exec originally from Southern California who found the weather there boring. Another was a woman born and raised in Minnesota who looked forward to snowmobiling every winter. The prospect of crime never crossed my mind there.

I’m pretty sure you’re wrong about this. The Knights of Columbus is a conservative Catholic fraternal group that does things like say the rosary in front of abortion clinics.
Did you mean Catholic Relief Services which is an international NGO with a billion-dollar budget that flaunts Catholic social teaching and is loved by the left?
Btw, I also don’t think you meant to say Catholic Charities whose charitable work is largely domestic and involves adoption services, programs to help the poor (like in Appalachia), and disaster relief (Katrina, Sandy, midwest tornadoes, etc.).
But it might have just been a one-time thing. Dad and his buds were likely helping as veterans even though they used the KofC hall to raise the funds. A local priest could have given permission.
If the Knights mostly DON'T, then good for them and I apologize for the misrepresentation.

The barricaded zone extends one block in each direction from the hallowed ground at 38th and Chicago. It’s accessible by foot and residents park cars diagonally along what used to be a busy street. The police do not enter. A month or so ago a man was shot and killed in front of Cup Foods where St George died. Bystanders took him to the hospital. Not sure if cops came. Someone turned in the shooter, a gang member. There were no protests regarding the murder. I visited on a cold January day, wore running shoes in case I needed them. It’s a forbidding and scary scene. An apartment building where I lived a student in 1973-74 stands just inside the zone. Back then it was a mixed neighborhood, I never walked in fear as I did in January. RIP Minneapolis.

Floyd was born in North Carolina. But his mother, a single parent, moved the family to Houston when he was 2, so she could search for work.
George Floyd, around age 40, got into the pipeline of blacks heading north to Minneapolis because he’d fathered five children with various women, and wasn’t the best of providers. He wanted a ‘clean start’ away from where he was known for his criminal past.
A church-run charity in the Twin Cities provided the pull factor.

I’m assuming Floyd relocated from Houston to Minneapolis because of the more generous welfare in Minnesota, not because of a better job. Houston is similar to Minneapolis in that it’s cost of living is low relative to its wages. A good measure of that is the federal government’s GS schedule. Houston is the third-highest paid “locality” in the country, only behind the expensive San Francisco Bay Area and NYC. I imagine politicking has a good deal to do with it – in Houston’s case the DoD and NASA. Huntsville AL likewise receives its own locality schedule, while a number of large cities, such as Tampa and New Orleans, are conspicuously absent.
https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/salaries-wages/2021/general-schedule/
Re your last paragraph. I wish it worked that way in Australia but despite Sydney and Melbourne having very expensive housing the middle easterners, africans and pacific islanders don’t have any trouble affording to live there and never move to cheaper cities.
As others have stated, this is another “zone of autonomy” like the CHAZ / CHOP in Seattle, or the brief attempt at the “red house” in Portland. It is run by the same anarchists who are at best Antifa-adjacent…and more likely street-level Antifas plus one or two block commanders.
However there is still electricity in the wires, water in the pipes, probably natural gas in the other pipes, and functioning sewers. So this autonomous zone is, like, totally autonomous except for water, toilet flushing, lights that come on after dark, heating in some form, cooking food, refrigeration…oh, and emergency medical care, you betcha.
Totally. Autonomous.
Like a fort some kids build in the back yard or on a vacant lot, that kind of “autonomous”.
Ted Wheeler said some strong words out in Portlandia, but it is not clear if any action has taken place to put those words into action. If we’ve learned anything from the last year, it should be “talk is cheap”.
This anecdote is barely on topic.
In the 1980s, a wellknown Minnesota mining and manufacturing company created a large corporate presence in Austin, Texas. (An old inside joke is at the time they told execs and other transfers that they were going to Austin and they assumed Austin MN.)
Austin was not the town then that it is now. I believe it was well more than 50% smaller, housing was limited and it was still basically just a college and capital town.
But … the economy had boomed, and there have always been significant energy and real estate concerns with HQs in Austin to be close to the state legislature. The first big Austin real estate boom had begun – you could barely find a house under $50k!
The MN transfers to Austin fell into 3 categories – people who bought homes immediately (say 80%) and then another 20% or so who rented, which was regarded as the worse thing you could do because rents had gone up as well.
Then – with the S&L crisis and other factors, the real estate market crashed. People were stuck with then exorbitantly prices homes, while the renters turned around and bought homes, often being sold by real estate speculators and ruined entrepreneurs at fire sale prices.
I guess it should be noted- most of these transfers were good MN liberals.
Slowly, they asked for transfers and got out from under their mortgages. Many returned to MN, either back to the home office, or they just found other jobs in MN.
I worked with many members of the “20%” in Austin around the turn of the century, and the story never varied. The people who bought high, sold low, went back to MN and then saw the real estate prices gradually increase in Austin. The 20% ended up owning large properties, often lakefront, and some of these properties are now worth millions because absent a few hiccups like 2008, the property values never really corrected or came down in Austin.
Eventually, huge chunks of the Austin operation which represented manufacturing of telecom, IT, electronics etc – inexplicably failed. The operation was pared down, the company had layoffs for the first time in its 100 year+ history, and just recently the enormous campus in Austin was sold to a developer- I am sure at great profit for the company it must be said.
Among the 20%, some of whom even still work for the company, the opinion was universal- many of the same transfers/transferred back went on within the organization and made weird decisions that caused the company to drastically pull back from a sector that has done nothing but boom, worldwide, since.
I wonder how the company – known mostly for office supplies and auto products – is really doing in these strange times. I’m sure the investors are happy.
My point is that maybe, the rot among the elite of Minnesota- who I will efficiently characterize as bleeding heart tax and spend liberals- has been on full display for decades.
The world was forced to notice the George Floyd disfunction, but I suspect the writing has been on the wall about the MN “miracle” for a long long time
It certainly was on full display in Austin TX if you knew the right people from about 1987 – 2005, where a small community of minnesotans displayed their “savvy” to all the Texans they came into contact with.
Steve’s right in theory, but it can take a long time for the welfare class to be driven out.

Have a gander at the work histories of the Minneapolis City Council. With a couple of exceptions, they were all functionaries of inconsequential NGOs. All but a couple of them are childless. This is who runs for office in Minneapolis. Competent people aren’t motivated to run against them and the general public just accepts this. Note, Betsy Hodges, voted out of office in 2017, had the same work history.
Agreed. The City Council members are live-off-the-taxpayers'-dime hacks. Of course, this is true of the "political class" everywhere.

The whole Somali-Minneapolis thing is so infuriating and I’m not even a Minnesota resident, just a tourist who has visited a few times.
Apparently, busybody Lutheran charities got involved in Somalia and decided that some of the locals needed to be evacuated to civilization.
Well, being Lutherans from Minnesota, they literally brought the Somalis home with them and in doing so imported an immigrant criminal underclass where there previous was not one. An underclass that now has grown so large and is so ingrained that these “refugees” have now begat several generations of native-born US citizens who can freely shuttle back and forth to the homeland and import even more crime and troublemakers and Stone Age clan conflicts on their own without any further help from the Lutherans.
There wasn’t anything special about Minnesota and I’m sure the Somalis would have preferred somewhere warmer and drier, but leaching off of someone else’s civilization in Minnesota was better than homegrown anarchy in Mogadishu, so off they went. The Lutherans in Somalia were more concerned about the savages than their own neighbors in Minnesota.
Again, infuriating.
Jewish and Catholic charities are ancient. The Minnesota Lutheran charities were created a few decades ago for one reason; steal the taxpayers money.Replies: @Reg Cæsar

I just can hardly wait to get my copy of his deathless ghost-written prose but there might be several print-runs given to the invading armies crossing our border to serve as ballast in their backpacks (no doubt all paid for with freshly created money from the fed).
As someone who remembers Minneapolis when it was an island of Nice in the middle of the country, their tipping point towards disaster was two-pronged:
1- though younger readers won’t remember or believe this, there was almost a competition between midwestern states around the turn of the century – that comparatively, now seem near-paradisiacal – to dramatically increase their number of blacks….it was not unusual to hear mayors and governors say things like this or that state “is in danger of falling behind”….falling behind in what, precisely? Why, relevancy, social justice, wokeness….. the future! Good luck digging up the news articles now – but they’re out there. Start with “Mollie Tibbetts”, and work backwards from there. Bring a Coleman lantern, because they’re almost certainly buried deep.
2- Midwestern states that can be shamed into believing that low numbers of blacks will cost them vital hipness points can easily be fooled into voting for Democrats and especially carpetbagging Jewish Democrats, universally understood to be the worst kind (the reason no one will dare to say it out loud is the reason why such knowledge is ‘universally understood’). Everybody is well aware of clownish Al Franken, but Minnesota’s doom was first writ – and writ large – by the late Paul Wellstone.
And now? Well, you can add great swaths of the Midwest to those states which are must-avoid destinations for people looking to start or raise families. With each passing year, the map of America has a lot more X’s through it than the year previous. (Luckily for America, our next two ‘states’ will come with X’s pre-penciled in and good to go.)

Should there be some manner of protest against this?

What are these root causes of crime, and how should Americans face them head on?

It wasn’t lutheran do gooderism It was and is money money money. . The Lutheran, like Methodists etc Church is declining every year. Hence no faithful to donate. So the Lutherans saved their finances by getting into the refugee racket. All those religious organizations are to blame. But blame for the Minneapolis Somali situation rests solely on money grubbing grant grifting Lutherans.
Jewish and Catholic charities are ancient. The Minnesota Lutheran charities were created a few decades ago for one reason; steal the taxpayers money.

38th St has a crosstown bus parallel to the Lake St route (a good way to survey the terrain) and is less of a (main) drag. Its not ghetto but near-ghetto (i.e., chain-link) in stretches between the attractive Chain of Lakes to the west and Lakes Hiawatha and Nokomis to the southeast, both of which retard ghettoization. It’s the kind of transition zone where striving minorities can move up to and ambitious young whites can afford to start their boutiques and cafés. You can still buy 78s and Victrolas on 38th St.
One of the two churches that hosted our son’s Cub Scout pack is about a mile to the east. It’s humble, but tolerable. No chain-link there, but a few Little Free Libraries, a sign of civilization.
A commenter criticized my description of Riot Central eight blocks north of that as slow gentrification, because a (clean) check-cashing place was prominent. But that had been there since the building was built. The Town Talk Diner around the corner was upgraded from a breakfast joint to a yuppie night spot long after. The new, retro Art Deco Hi-Lo Diner used to sell pricy themed desserts, glorified cupcakes, but have since toned that down a bit. (You can over-gentrify.)

It’s not just Daddy issues. I’ve noticed that some of the most worthless big city mayors were born in the late 50s and early 60s. They’re Baby Boomers who were younger siblings. All their lives, the parents and older siblings made decisions for them, and the younger siblings are worthless at taking responsibility. They keep wanting power without understanding that having power also means making tough and unpleasant decisions that will make you unpopular, and they can’t accept that. They’ve never had to make tough decisions at all, and they freak out when they have to.
They’re going to be displaced by the older Millennials who were oldest children, and who are going to be tougher-minded.

Turning 65, time to apply to social security? Don’t go to the nearest social security office. Go to Jewish family services so they can counsel and consult with you about applying for social security. Single mom with kids? Go to Jewish family services to be counseled about EBT cards and free school lunch. Looking for a job? JFS I will counsel you about applying for a job.
They’re all like that, whatever the religion or purpose of the organization. Find a cause, file your Non profit corporation, hire a commission fund raiser grant writer and you’re set for life.
Dog rescuing is such a lucrative occupation there’s so few American dogs left to rescue the NGO grifters are going abroad to rescue dogs and bring them to the USA. Behind the actual food selling farmers, the city park department that lets them use the parks and the customers that buy the food, there’s a billion dollar industry of NGOs consulting and coordinating farmer’s markets
I’ve read that the non profit sector is bigger than the entire private sector of the economy.
Yes, but mass immigration means that is all over. It’s now just a war of all against all to see what tiny fraction of civilized people manages to survive.

My dad was KofC and his group DID help when the Hmongs came over, as Hmongs were on the anticommunist side during Vietnam. The KofC was originally chartered, partly, as an immigrant aid society which is why they get geared up and decorate events on Columbus Day. Even though Columbus/immigration has only a tenuous link.
But it might have just been a one-time thing. Dad and his buds were likely helping as veterans even though they used the KofC hall to raise the funds. A local priest could have given permission.
If the Knights mostly DON’T, then good for them and I apologize for the misrepresentation.
That said, the people I met there liked it. One was a US Bank exec originally from Southern California who found the weather there boring. Another was a woman born and raised in Minnesota who looked forward to snowmobiling every winter. The prospect of crime never crossed my mind there.Replies: @Feryl
Actually, air conditioning has worsened heat related illness among, uh, “large” outdoor athletes. How so? The body spends too much time in a cooled dry environment, then freaks out from exertion in hot and humid weather. People getting fatter hasn’t helped, either, and anecdotally people seem to want lower and lower indoor temperatures during the warm season these days (meanwhile, as recently as the 80’s many Americans did not have air conditioning at all).
I apologize for that. SOME KofC, including my dad’s old bunch, helped relocate some Hmongs right after Vietnam and I thought immigration was still a major issue for them. Having heard from others since, I’m thinking dad and his pals helped as veterans pretty much on their own. Gave me the wrong idea, sorry.

The small rural meat packing plants were mostly established by small independent meat packing companies. Armour does still exist; quite likely they followed the trend. Biggest offender of importing Somalis into Minnesota is Lutheran Social Services.
I am furious at LSS for importing a Somali underclass that will always be resentful of their white betters, but the criminal underclass in Minnesota is not Somali. It’s good ole homegrown American blacks imported from Chicago and Milwaukee and now entrenched in ghetto pockets of Mpls/St. Paul and spreading ever outward to Duluth and Fargo/Moorhead.

I used to try and go to Merlin’s Rest every time I went to Minneapolis, which used to be 4-5 times a year. Because of the plague and then the riots I haven’t been there since 2019. Now I don’t see myself going back there for quite a long time if ever. No way am I parking my car on the street w/out of state plates and expect any kind of law enforcement deterrence. It used to be a nice neighborhood but is there anywhere safe for non-hipster whites in that town anymore? I’m going to keep my former white privilege in check and avoid the town like the plague.

Eagan may be a bastion of "white privilege", but the closest they come to admitting it is an Advantage Road. I assume that and Performance Circle are in one of the city's many office parks. Somewhere else is the oxymoronic Serpentine Circle.
A new pub has opened in Eagan since we left the Cities. The only thing interesting about Eagan is the street names– Pilot Knob, Lone Oak, Yankee Doodle, Cliff, Johnny Cake Ridge… Yes, American exurbs are full of such name, but usually on “Courts” and “Terraces”, which are rarely either. In Eagan,, they’re the main drags.
